  • Thomas and Meaghan review the HOKA ONE ONE Carbon X 2, and it's ready to fly. The carbon plate is set lower, the heel is out farther, and the upper fits better. Hell, we even like this better than the Rocket X. Drops January 1, 2021 for $180.

    This is the shoe that has converted me over to Hokka. Gave up on zero-drop after continued foot issues. Carbon X2 was a revelation. Started a buying spree to get Bondi7, SpeedGoat 4 and Evo.

    I loved the original Carbon X and actually liked the firm feel. I think the stack height protected you pretty well, never felt knee pain after 20 mile runs. I actually liked the structurless upper I hope the upper on the new one isn't too snug like the Rincon which felt like I was running on the upper if that makes sense.

    Just some feedback for reviewing. I have very wide feet and I am a US 13. This pretty much eliminates 90% of all trendy shoes. Hoka, Nike, Adidas, etc are all write offs for me. When you talk about fit, it would be great if you explicitly mention whether the shoe is suitable for people with wide feet because it sucks so hard to watch a bunch of reviews, get excited about a product, and then realise it’s not for you.

    Hey, I have an issue with my Hoka One One CarbonX2 (25 miles).
    It feels like there is a groove across the shoe, just below the ball of the foot. This is with both shoes! When I run, it feels like the carbon plate consists of two unconnected parts or was broken through, which I don't think is likely. The slower I run, the more "intense" this sensation is.
    If I bent the shoe, it "kinks" exactly at this point. From the outside, however, no damage or anything can be seen and otherwise the shoe rolls perfectly. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    I am somewhat desperate because I cannot / do not want to do long runs like this and that is actually an awesome shoe. It just sucks with every step. With my old Carbon X, I have no problems at all.
    I am grateful for every idea.

    Could you guys possibly do a test showing how the contact foam deals with stuff like nails or glass?
    Not really the kind of video you do but it would help a lot of people understand that foam isn't going to suck up water or be slippery and slimey on roads.

    I actually really liked the original carbon X even though the carbon plate was a little harsh. I want this shoe but I think for $180, it's a plated training shoe and there are lots of great training shoes, like Endorphin Speed, for less. At $150-$160, I'd be in.

    What does Hoka say the lineup is for Rocket, Carbon and Mach? What's daily trainer, what are the race shoes? I'm quite confused

    • @MrPhibib
      @MrPhibib 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      so your Mach is your daily traner, carbon is your fast training shoe e.g. tempos/threshold/intervals and then your rocket is your race shoe. However I would say all shoes cross over slightly into each category like your mach could be daily trainer and tempo shoe or your carbon x could be tempo and race day shoe

    Bit confused here and did not see any mention of it but what is the fundamental difference between this and the Rocket X ?

    • @Believeintherun
      @Believeintherun  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This has a softer midsole, more structured upper, not as snappy (i.e. less "pop" from the carbon fiber plate). Also weighs about an ounce more. Rolls through the stride but falls more into a tempo/longer race shoe.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Believeintherun Thanks! Still bit puzzled with HOKA's strategy here as, in the UK, HOKA have priced the Rocket X at £140 which is somewhat cheaper than the Carbon X which is still at £160. That's a competitive price although pretty clear you aren't getting NEXT% level performance on the cheap. So will HOKA make the Carbon X 2 even cheaper given it is heavier and presume slower or will they charge more as it is a shoe designed for more runners. After all HOKA say the Rocket X is "geared for elite athletes" which is hardly inviting for the vast majority of us even though I bought a pair but, these days, as somebody who is just sub 3 standard I am a long long way short of "elite". Ah I see $180 so that sort of implies they are also going to price it around £140 here. That's going to be confusing as to what to get then.

    • @Believeintherun
      @Believeintherun  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rocket is lighter with a lower stack. Less foam all around. It feels similar to the New Balance RC. The Carbon X2 is easier on the legs with more cushion. I ended up liking the Carbon X2 over the Rocket x. Just personal preference. The Carbon X is more versatile.

    Why is it important to “lock down” one’s foot? Is the objective to not allow the toes and forefoot to actually work the way the foot was created to? The binding of the feet that most running shoe companies seem to build is reminiscent of the bound feet of Japanese geishas - not exactly ergonomic. What happens if you have a wide (“D” or “E”) foot?

    • @Believeintherun
      @Believeintherun  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think you get what we mean by “lock down.” You don’t want your foot to be sliding all over the midsole, you want the shoe to feel like an extension of your foot.
