    QD: I did my first race ever in August. I skipped 5ks, 10ks, and went straight to a road ultra. I did a 12-hour race on a 3.75 mile paved loop around a local park. I did 12 laps (45 miles) in my first race and I plan on doing this race again next year but I am really hoping to do some 50 milers on trails in 2021.

    Hey Seth, you can put the chapters timestamps in the video, in the timeline. Kofuzi does this, it's pretty handy

    Mach 4
    Carbon X 2
    Rocket X
    Killer running shoe trio. You have a light and fast daily trainer, plated long run shoe, and racing shoe.

    I think it looks pretty decent. Your video shots running in the shoes are pretty awesome. I don't know how you can manage to do such smooth shots but whoever is filming it did a great job.

    Hi Seth... loving the videos, by far my favourite running vlog! I run ultra distances, anything from 50 - 100 miles and I’m really considering this shoe for 2021. In the ultra game for us not elites it’s all about stability and comfort of the shoe, because unless you a machine like Jim Walmsley then my form starts to break down at the 70 ish mile mark and I need a shoe to get me to the line. Also a comfortable upper means less risk of blisters. Weight is important, but not top of my list. Keep up the amazing work.

    • @johnrose4590
      @johnrose4590 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Kai Smithley thanks.. As Seth always says, he rates shoes on his running style and preference. I love his reviews but look at the shoes from what is most important to me. I’m a 3:00 marathon runner at best so having a shoe be 2 ounces lighter but loosing the structure, comfort and stability is not what I’m after. Me like most other average runners, I have a slightly weaker left leg and although I don’t need stability shoes, I can’t get on with the likes of an next % etc as my left knee would be shot after a 3 hour runs.

    • @johnrose4590
      @johnrose4590 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well just like you have a dominant hand for writing etc you will find you also have a more dominant leg. Gym work, home workouts and resistance band work can help, but if your like most then you may be limited on time to fit in as much of the support work as you should. I had a treadmill test and noticed my left foot caves in (slightly) when I land. So I opt for shoes with a more stable base, but not all the way for a full stability shoe.

    QD: ran my 1st 24 hour race September 19th/20th placed 2nd overall with 190 km on a 2.25km paved loop with a hill. I have qualified to run for the canadian national team for the 24 hour world championships in romania in 2021 as long as covid doesn't effect them. I wore the new balance beacon v2

    QD: I have done a 100k on the road and 55 miles on a track. I honestly prefer ultras on smooth surfaces. An undulating trail with ruts and roots beats up my knees and ankles. On roads you can just zone out and go. If you zone out on a trail after a few hours you are likely to catch a toe and fall on your face.

    I’ve been running ultra since 2005. I prefer racing long on road loops and especially the track. Timed events such as 6,12, 24, 48, 72, and 144 hour runs are races I’ve done and excelled at. Most common shoe I’ve seen at these races are in the Hoka line-up. Especially Bondi, and Clifton. Going that long you need shoes with cushion over pop unless you are Camille Heron. I co- direct a track ultra in Pennsylvania in May called Dawn 2 Dusk 2 Dawn Track Ultras. Distances are 50k, 12 hour and 24 hour. We get people from all over the US and Canada. Great event. If you want “Big Miles” a fun atmosphere and lots of support track Ultras are the best. Road Ultras with a 1 mile loop are great too. I got into using Hokas when I noticed at the US 24 hour National Championships in 2010 in Cleveland, Ohio that 16 of the top 20 finishers where all wearing Hokas. I switch over soon after that. Planning on running a track ultra next year and I have a 10 hour road /trail ultra this weekend.

    @htmonaro1969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    QD: I ran the IAU 6hr Virtual Global Solidarity Run in August 2020 and did the first 50km on the road. Also, many of the timed ultras (24hr etc) are on the track. I believe the wr for 24hr of 303.5km by Yiannis Kouros in 1997 was on a track. I suspect most early ultras were on the road, not trails. The Comrades us an excellent example.
    As for your review of the CarbonX 2, CMEVA is not new, it stands for Compression Moulded EVA which is what virtually all modern running shoes have and has been around since at least the 1980s (my first running shoes with CMEVA was the Nike Terra TC.from around 1982 or 83). It might be a slightly different blend to what is in the first version, but altimately it's just spin. Eventually Hoka will come up with a PEDA based foam or similar, perhaps in the Rocket, but the reason the CarbonX 2 is not light enough is the foam. EVA, whatever label you give it is heavy, compared to the modern carbon plated racing shoe foams. It's also a very Hoka thing to build a narrow shoes. Not all of their shoes are narrow, but that seems to be how they roll generally. That's why I can't wear them.

    QD: I ran a 3:21 50k on the roads....my buddy had eggs and sausage that morning...so we ran conservatively for the first 24 miles...avg 6:30 per mile....at 24 miles I saw 5th place in front of me so ran 6:15, 6:10, 6:05, 6:00, 5:55, 5:50 in and took 3rd.....Trained for it like a marathon and loved it because you didn’t have to run marathon pace....much more relaxed.....but still the competitive juices kicked in when I could smell the barn....ranked me 11th in the US that year!

    QD: I ran the NYC 60K in 2018. It is 9 laps around Central Park with around 250 participants. It was fun, I don’t believe I would go that long on the road again though, just a little too much pavement in one day.

    The first iteration of the Hoka Carbon X was unveiled in a 100k road time trial with Walmsley, Wardian and other Hoka athletes in Folsom, Ca. The result was Walmsley smashing the 50 mile record. Though this shoe isn't for me for that distance - it still attests to its attempt to be an ultra road racing shoe.

    Hoka seems to be feeling their way through pricing on carbon plated shoes. The Carbon Rocket came in at 160, the original Carbon X was 180, then the SPE jumped to 200, then the Rocket X AND the Carbon X 2 are both 180. Very interesting. I wonder if they plan on releasing another version of the Carbon Rocket and, if so, what that price will be. Thanks for the review SJD. Hope you're finding some time to rest with everything you have going on.

    I ran a 50K on road in Switzerland on the Carbon X but I did have to change the original laces for elastic ones because of its tight and non-elastic upper. Hoka shoes this year have better uppers and I particularly enjoy the C. Edge. The normal Clifton doesn't work for me in things over half marathon but I think it's the best daily trainer for new runners. The Rincon (and the Speedgoat if on trail) can do it all :P

For the consumer if the shoe has poor durability it should always be cheaper IMO. Like the first vaporflys were basically swindling customers out of money!

    I don’t think the Carbon x2 is looking to compete with the other marathon racing shoes, right? That’s what the rocket X is. It seems like something that’s built for people who aren’t looking to blaze the streets but stay comfortable during their first or second marathon.

    I’ve done a 50 mile race in the Carbon X. But all my Ultras in 2021 will be on the trail.

    Hey Seth, a while ago you received a few different pairs of track spikes. I was wondering if you are planning on testing them out soon during your turnover work? Thanks!

    I bought these yesterday in the luminary green diff color it'll stand out but I got these for interval sprints on the treadmill as well as sprinting on the track and I'll be doin a 5k. Would these be good for all that I mentioned? I'm also buying the Clifton 8s for long distance jogging/running? Will that be good for that as well? Clifton r a lil more heavier so I wanted tobuse those for my everyday running in the street and save the carbon for races and sprinting like I said

    Maybe thinking about a counterweight? Something to balance out the weight of the heel through the foot strike.

    QD: I did a 12 hour ultramarathon on a track back in 2017 in Paraguay and made 87,65km. Kilian Jornet will do a 24 hour track run this or next year in the new Salomon S/Lab Phantasm. GREETINGS FROM SALZBURG/AUSTRIA!!!

    Did you test the exact same size at the Mach 4? (Sorry if you said this, didn't hear it if you did). Intrigued why the fit would be so different otherwise.
