Can’t wait for this shoe 👟. I’ve run in Hoka since 2012. Bondi 6 and Rincon1 are the shoes I currently run in. Looking for a solid racer from Hoka and I didn’t like the feel of the Carbon X when I put the shoe on my foot 🦶. Rincon is my racer for shorter races 1/2 marathon and less. The Rocket 🚀 X hopefully will fill in a gap in my shoe rotation. I do ultra marathons also and Bondi is amazing shoe for going long. This past weekend I turned 50 and banged out a 2:53:33 marathon, first in-person race of the year. Let’s hope for a better 2021.😊🏃🏻♂️Happy Running All!
That plate suddenly just let go in the middle of that shoe. I think that it may have broken. Likely a good idea to stop bending the plated shoes more than how they'd be bent while running. We'll still trust you on your flexibility and related judgement. :)
Ya, I agree with others, I don't think the plate was supposed to bend like that! I definitely feel the difference. My rotation is Skechers Razor 3, New Balance Beacon V2, Zoom Fly Flyknits. I love the Beacons for easy days, but the HyperBurst and React leave my legs so much less beat up on faster days. I save the 4% for races 10k and up. HyperBurst Mebs for some tempos.
If you like to geek out on running shoes is there a better place to be than hanging out with Seth? I will make sure my next purchase is with one of your posted links.
QD: EVA is a solid performer, but it doesn't need the carbon plate. The Peba based foams are, on the other hand less stable, but are also real performance foams. The carbon plate, as I understand it, plays two roles, it adds stability to the Peba foams but it also give some so-called propulsion. Hoka don't yet have a Peba foam, so they are clutching at straws at the moment. Once they figure it out, the Rocket X will deliver for them. Look at Saucony, the Endorphin is next level, in that is a more durable Peba foam, compared to the ZoomX. Although most seem to think the Vaporfly's still have the edge in performance.
QOD: I have a place for Nike's ZoomX and Hoka's EVA, and they are on different ends of the spectrum. My favorite running shoe is the VFN%. Hands down. I have three pairs. It's a Porsche 911. It just hauls and is a ton of fun. It takes discipline to not try and PR every run in them. That said, stability isn't what the ZoomX is known for which can tire out a weak ankle I have and it's hard to just take it easy. My AFN% has better stability, but I just don't like the fit or ride nearly as much as the VFN% and they wear down FAST. That's where my Clifton 7s come in. They are like comfy slippers for easy days. Those are a Benz. Easy, stable, and promote enjoying the ride while grinding the training miles. I really love those and their EVA base. If I have sore feet or legs on a rest day, I'll throw on the 7s and it is pure comfort.
2:18 How is a laser even going to yelp you there? Midsoles have raised sidewalls that cup the foot, so the height measured on the outside tells us nothing. Especially with Hokas, which like to give the effect of a moon boot but in reality have reasonable stack heights.
Not sure that plate survived that bend test, probably time to retire the bend test with these plated shoes! In my head though you’d have a good sense for how stiff the shoe rides from the first impression run, not so sure how or why over-bending the shoes after the run will provide any further information 🤷🏻♂️
It sounds like a nice stable ride, which will help later in race. Hoping the midsole will be better in warmer conditions. Based on my experience, Hokas harden in sub 40ish weather and are fine 50+.
Seems to be good enough for Tuliamook to win the marathon Olympic Trials! Is it the fastest shoe I've ever ran in? No, definitely not, but it's quite light feeling and very comfortable, much more so than a Vaporfly or Alphafly.
My only chance to have a carbon plate shoe so far has been getting a pair of Adizero Pro; I was disappointed Adidas rejected my order for the Adios Pro even if I clicked the page as soon at they were publicly available for sale, so I bought these instead. I've been running more than 50 years (..), and I found out the combo Lightstrike+Boost is simply brilliant, if not the lightest on the market. I really wish I could afford myself to try out the many other options available, but I'll probably won't farthest than Nike, that fit-wise suited my needs very well in the past.
Polyther block amide foams like ZoomX are the best. They are lighter and have a better efficiency than anything else. I’ve seen some good ethylene vinyl acetate based midsoles like the ones out of Hoka or brooks, but they just aren’t as advanced as PEBA. Thermoplastic Polyurethane midsoles have been getting better too recently. By nature, TPU isn’t as light as PEBA, but some of the companies like NB have been doing a good job of making good shoes with it.
3:06 Seriously! Why is your Vaporfly Next% so light? I'm the same size as you (US 7.5 m). My Alphafly weighs around the same as yours but my black/white Vapors weigh 172.2-175g (L-R) vs your 164g! Even the Metaracer, which I measured in store since I don't own one, was 180g+ vs your 170g! All were measured in new/like-new condition using the same weighing scale.
As a 230lb runner I love my saucony speeds/pros but they tear way too easily, I know these are not as fast as a shoe but hopefully they will be more durable
ZoomX is much more forgiving and gentle for the feet. And this is what makes Vaporfly faster in marathon for me - you still can run fast after 35 km and your legs are not completely trashed.
Gonçalo Lopes I would predict pretty soon, maybe by this coming weekend. This is the last carbon shoe he had to test I think. A lot of running shoe TH-camrs are releasing “favorite carbon plate shoe” videos right now.
Little expensive for a LR shoe... QD: ZoomX leads the way. Feels great under foot and legs feel so good after the run. Recovery is faster for my legs in ZoomX midsole.
Oooh, I think I like the idea of this shoe! How does it compare to the Saucony Endorphin Speed/Pro? So far that is my favorite shoe, but I have long been a die-hard Hoka fan and like how it has more give to it than other carbon racers!
QD: I’ve only run in Saucony and ASICS so far, so I can only go by the EVA and PWRRUN foams from Saucony, and the Flytefoam of the Nimbus. I really like an EVA foam and have run 3 marathons in Saucony Rides (from 8-10). It’s a firmer ride but I like that ground feel and it seems like I’m more in control. With the ASICS nimbus Flytefoam, it feels soft and so so enjoyable for easy recovery days. It feels like I’m getting a foot massage whenever I run in Flytefoam so for the comfort and enjoyability it’s better than EVA for me, but it I just haven’t used it for performance (having only run in the Nimbus which is plush).
Hi I weigh 90+ kg will Bondi 7 will be good pick for daily runs upto 10 kms alternate can buy Rocket X as well as all purpose shoes. On Nike Pegasus 38 I could feel jerks and shin and knee hurt as well as heel sore can't handle stable pace so want to swap. Am Normal Arch and forefoot striker toes almost the high heel drop in Nike wasn't favourable it seems.
Thoughts on Sara Hall's Asics Prototype shoe? It looks like the Metaracer upper attached to a maximally stacked midsole. Should pros be able to race in shoes not yet available to amateurs?
That shouldn’t have been allowed based on the WA regulations. I personally think that there should be a middle ground between that rule and unregulated shoe use though. Maybe WA is deciding to allow a couple of athletes from each company to experiment a prototype in a big race
I have a new pair of Nike Zoom Fly 3 that I got super cheap at the outlet store. Is there enough differences in the Zoom Fly 3 and the Rocket X to warrant purchasing the Rocket X? Thanks
I even have a 6.5, almost impossible to find. Mostly directly at the producer directly. Watch the newsletters for special offers (e.g. nike sometimes has 30% off). And sometimes I can get the women's or even the children's versions.
Yea that plate broke, I wouldn’t be bending and twisting those plate shoes... I don’t understand how hoka can charge so much for this when Atreyu can make the same shoe for so much less. Mesh upper. Eva midsole with plate. Simple outer rubber. Hoka is riding too much on their recognition from back in 2010-2011
QD: I’ve only run in the Turbo 1 but in my opinion ZoomX is softer than a regular EVA. Also I won’t be able to make it to the livestream today because I have to run right after class meetings before an orthodontist appointment 😭😭
Hi ,bought the Beacon v3 a few weeks ago, however a loud popping /clicking sound now eminates from the left shoe every time I transition from heel to toe. Tried removing the insole but it made no difference , clearly a issue with the midsole. Would not mind but makes me sound like a Shire horse while running.Unsure whether to return as will not get full refund now. Any thoughts many thanks.
My v2’s do the same thing. Started somewhere around 100 miles. 170ish on them now. I only really notice it while walking, pretty annoying though! Sounds like it’s coming from the forefoot where the rubber outsole patches are.
This sounds a lot like my new balance fresh foam more v2. Please do a comparison. I want a hoka shoe but I want a hoka shoe like the new balance. This has a carbon fiber plate though that lends itself to a speed increase for me over the new balance but I NEED YOUR REVIEW PLEASE. Don't make me beg (im begging)
I have a question for you people in the comments so I am a cross country and track high school runner and I’ve always only had one pair of running shoes for all of high school but I want a nice pair of speed shoes something I can where more my interval or repeat days or something for a road race can anyone give me suggestions?
That isn’t necessarily true. Hyperbolically speaking, that is true. But if you are being technical, everything has some energy return. In reality though, it is more accurate to say that everything loses energy, but some things lose less than others. ZoomX just loses less energy (15-20%) than EVA (30-55%).
Dear Seth, Seek beauty! Here's an idea. I want to see and hear more stories from the DGR community. Maybe you can challenge the community to describe their running live in maximum 10 tweets, or say 300 words with pictures. The most beautiful stories you can share and maybe you can invite some runners to share their story on your channel. What do you think?
"let's say 220 lbs +"
Speaking my language. That's exactly what I needed to hear about these! Thanks Seth!
Can’t wait for this shoe 👟. I’ve run in Hoka since 2012. Bondi 6 and Rincon1 are the shoes I currently run in. I want to live in that Shoedio! Running shoe Paradise!
QotD: I think the whole point of the carbon plate is to make a super soft foam useable in a long race.
I agree!
Also provides a rocker
Yes, but then Hoka couples the plate with a firm dull foam - makes no sense
That plate suddenly just let go in the middle of that shoe. I think that it may have broken. Likely a good idea to stop bending the plated shoes more than how they'd be bent while running. We'll still trust you on your flexibility and related judgement. :)
QD: I love the feeling of ZoomX foam. ZoomX feels very responsive, and it is buy far the lightest foam out there i think.
I think you did break the plate, it sort folds down the middle, rather then bends (I might’ve even heard a distinct crunch).
Maarten Hageman thought the same thing when got to that point in the vid, right as he was mentioning how thin the plate was too 😂
Ya, I agree with others, I don't think the plate was supposed to bend like that!
Can't wait for your thoughts on the Skechers razor elite!
Wishing the DGR community well! I definitely fancy a new Hoka shoe - probably more speed focused, but that said it needs to be wide fit!
Well wishes back Dan
Hello from Denmark , and thank you for the TH-cam Channel .
Rene’ Lorenzen og det var Denmark olé olé olé!
If you like to geek out on running shoes is there a better place to be than hanging out with Seth?
I will make sure my next purchase is with one of your posted links.
Good morning DGR family
One time my friend was bending his 4%s in track practice and the carbon fiber plate snapped😂
Why does this sound like 1.2 speed ? (Or auto tune)
QD: EVA is a solid performer, but it doesn't need the carbon plate. The Peba based foams are, on the other hand less stable, but are also real performance foams. The carbon plate, as I understand it, plays two roles, it adds stability to the Peba foams but it also give some so-called propulsion. just love hoka soo much
They need that rubber coverage on the Rincon
QOD: I have a place for Nike's ZoomX and Hoka's EVA, and they are on different ends of the spectrum.
My favorite running shoe is the VFN%. Hands down. I have three pairs. It's a Porsche 911. It just hauls and is a ton of fun. It takes discipline to not try and PR every run in them. Looks like the plate got bent around 6:00
I am looking forward to hear about True Love progress, it seems that she is really progressing!
2:18 How is a laser even going to yelp you there? Midsoles have raised sidewalls that cup the foot, so the height measured on the outside tells us nothing. Especially with Hokas, which like to give the effect of a moon boot but in reality have reasonable stack heights.
35:31 Irvine Ca i was 31. Run on
When can we expect the carbon fiber plate running shoe matrix
QD: ZOOMX is definitely more responsive!
You’ve way too many shows lmao. Great content as always!
Howdy just got them for 70 euro on sale .. to my taste perfect 10K half marathon.. especially for that price love it 🤘😉
Two WR in my city!
Ok, I'm hyped, I'm going for a run.
Not sure that plate survived that bend test, probably time to retire the bend test with these plated shoes! In my head though you’d have a good sense for how stiff the shoe rides from the first impression run, not so sure how or why over-bending the shoes after the run will provide any further information 🤷🏻♂️
What do you feel is the difference between the Carbon X and Rocket X?
Looks like you cracked the plate or maybe it’s forefoot only plate.
It sounds like a nice stable ride, which will help later in race. Hoping the midsole will be better in warmer conditions. Based on my experience, Hokas harden in sub 40ish weather and are fine 50+.
QD: Pebax is softer and more comfortable imo and keeps it light. EVA has been used well like the Hoka Rincon, but I think Pebax reigns supreme
Seems to be good enough for Tuliamook to win the marathon Olympic Trials! Is it the fastest shoe I've ever ran in? No, definitely not, but it's quite light feeling and very comfortable, much more so than a Vaporfly or Alphafly.
Welcome back
Zoom X is still such a top midsole right now.
Is good slowish sprinting shoes for me lol
If the width is a little more forgiving than the Carbon X I could see this working for me. I tend to do better with a firmer shoe as it is.
You should do a Rocket x vs. Carbon x and Bondi x
Good Minnesota morning!
My only chance to have a carbon plate shoe so far has been getting a pair of Adizero Pro; I was disappointed Adidas rejected my order for the Adios Pro even if I clicked the page as soon at they were publicly available for sale, so I bought these instead.

Seth we wanna see it too. We just dont wanna hear the race, we wanna see the race aslo
I can't find that color wave anywhere!!
Hi Seth -- that's 30mm x 25mm stack heights
5:46 I think you broke the plate 😅
seth, are the carbon fibre plated shoes in the description of your videos ranked according to preferance?
Any word on the marathon racing shoe matrix? Cant wait!!
Polyther block amide foams like ZoomX are the best. They are lighter and have a better efficiency than anything else. I can confirm I paid $180 when it came out in May, it they change the price I’d be shocked.
Are you going to break these down? I'm very curious to see what the Carbon fiber plate in these looks like??
3:06 Seriously! Why is your Vaporfly Next% so light? I'm the same size as you (US 7.5 m).

I like the thumb pressing of the toe box, but I don’t know what your pressing? Your toes or the gap from your toes?
Instead of Tuesdays with True Love it should be Training with True love. Maybe start a weekly vlog for her
Any chance a big guy shoe matrix a possibility? Im a 230 pound runner and feel like, guys my size are missing out..lol
Excellent
@seth when will the CF marathon shoe matrix be ready?
Why didn’t you save the Atreyus for the marathon shoe matrix?
How does it compare to the Carbon X? 8.7 ounces
Haven't jumped into the peba family yet.
Seth, did you go true to size in the carbon rocket 🚀...thanks mate
When does the carbon plate shoe matrix comes out Seth? Many thanks!
Gonçalo Lopes I would predict pretty soon, maybe by this coming weekend. This is the last carbon shoe he had to test I think. A lot of running shoe TH-camrs are releasing “favorite carbon plate shoe” videos right now.

I like the Hoka Rocket X better than the Saucony Endorphin Speed. I think it's a more comfortable and faster shoe. I've never tried the Pro.
Think they will make a wide version of a carbon fiber plate shoe? I get blisters in snug distance shoes.
QD: EVA feels denser and not quite as bouncy to me.
me too, i cant compress it, too firm
What are these shoes like on gravel etc?
QD: I’ve only run in Saucony and ASICS so far, so I can only go by the EVA and PWRRUN foams from Saucony, and the Flytefoam of the Nimbus.

Pls, compare between evo carbon rocket VS rocket X that i will use for half MARATHON. Thank you
Can you gently bend the other shoe in the pair and compare it to the one you bent in the vid to show if it broke or not?
Thoughts on Sara Hall's Asics Prototype shoe? It looks like the Metaracer upper attached to a maximally stacked midsole.

Good morning fam!
Seth what is your favourite running shoe of all time (even long discontinued models)?
can we get a hoka one one trail and road shoe matrix? would love to compare the midsole rides.
Rocket X or adidas Boston 9 ??
I have a new pair of Nike Zoom Fly 3 that I got super cheap at the outlet store. Is there enough differences in the Zoom Fly 3 and the Rocket X to warrant purchasing the Rocket X?
Thanks
What is sizing like vs Nike zoom fly fk or the Pegasus 35?
I have the Clifton 6 and the Arahi 4, both size 9. Would you say the Rocket X would me also size 9?
I'm a US men's 7.5, where do you find shoes?? I have the hardest time
Running Warehouse! I'm a 7.5 as well.
I even have a 6.5, almost impossible to find. Mostly directly at the producer directly. Watch the newsletters for special offers (e.g. nike sometimes has 30% off). And sometimes I can get the women's or even the children's versions.

#1, good morning Seth
Butter my bread
I have a question for you people in the comments so I am a cross country and track high school runner and I’ve always only had one pair of running shoes for all of high school but I want a nice pair of speed shoes something I can where more my interval or repeat days or something for a road race can anyone give me suggestions?

I think you broke the plate man
