I think abandoning the cartoony feeling was one of their worst mistakes. Chapter 2 was fine tbh, in my opinion it was the perfect compromise between the old STW style and a proper, stand-alone battle royale. Other mistakes include: - Completely disregarding the storyline, half-assing most of it over and over and OVER again even when it had some nice inspiration, because they feared putting too much effort in a coherent story;. - Giving up on normal festivities, losing A LOT of the spirit of the first seaons when Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and so on would set on their own the real spirit of the season; - Trying way too hard to feel like a "not for kids" game anymore, with the only result of making it look like another game for cringe teens who totally aren't gOiNg ThRoUgH a PhAsE MoOoOmhhh;" - Putting waaay too much focus on collaborations (especially with irl hollywood celebrities who barely abybody actually wants) at the expense of original ideas and skins; - Giving up on silly items and mechanics, because those sweaty streamers only crave for predictable, reliable metas. GOD FORBID you have a little fun with a GAME. THE HORROR! They'd need to find an actual job! 😢
Really started hating streamers and youtubers during the release of mw2019. It made me realize that games can no longer be fun because streamers and youtubers don't want to die unless it's to someone else trying as hard as they are. I remember when 200 pumps were removed because streamers got tired of trying to dive in people's boxes like brain dead monkeys and getting punished for it. I remember when I first started playing on keyboard and mouse I didn't have to sweat trying to figure out binds when I could simply react and out aim everyone. I could set here all night typing out how I remember this and that before some random nerd streaming on his computer all day ruined the fun but I think this is long enough.
I hate how they've done the story since mid Chapter 2. It was never a main focus but it was fun theorycrafting with all of the small map changes and loading screens to figure out what was going on. Now the story is a jumbled mess of a multiverse that feels like it's only there to justify all the collabs.
Ironic how Fortnite started, or accelerated, the battle royale craze and at least had a different style to stand out but now, they're chasing after trends.
@@TacticalBaguette yea i completely agree. another thing i miss is that they dont do cool little teasers for new seasons or chapters anymore. i remember in chapter 1 season 6, towards the end of the season you could see your characters breath (foreshadowing the winter themed season 7) and then of course you could see the iceberg in the distance slowly getting closer every update. nowadays its just a countdown timer to a poorly made collab with a rapper (not talking about travis that was fire) and then everything is normal until downtime and then boom new season with more ridiculous collabs.
Chapter 1 felt like a fun post apocalyptic arena. Chapter 2 felt like a new world to run around and ruin. Chapters after that felt so clean and sanitized, you could never imagine people fighting there. With this season going back to Chapter 2, I think they know that people crave the old days. Nobody'll miss chapter 3 though.
i miss chapter 3. Yall really hate everything just fucking enjoy something for once, chapter 3 season 1 was top 3 gameplay experiences for me in the whole games lifetime

I played it so much trying to get the TV backpack that I realized it just wasn't as fun as it used to be. At the beginning of Chapter 5, most of the locations felt like the same village/mansion designs copied and pasted. Fortnite was my main game up until that point, but now I don't really play it anymore.

@@Fusion05 I mean it doesn't really matter if old fortnite had nanite or not. Nanite is really good technology and people could have seen huge performance boosts and the art style would of c2 would remain if they integrated it correctly.
Losing it's artstyle is one of those unfortunate fates that all live-service games will have to face eventually. Like overwatch losing all its militarism with the release of 2, or how tf2 kept releasing more and more insane hats for people to buy. The artsyle will always be some of the first on the chopping block in the pursuit of profit, most consumers don't care enought about it and would rather gawk at the recognizable soldier man. I'm gonna be honest i heavily dislike fortnite as a brand and game but seeing how its artstyle has degraded still hit home. It becomes very hard for me to care about any cool art direction in a live-service game because i know it won't last. Great video, you should make more.
Another point you left out was that Fortnite has become a tech demo for Unreal engine. Fortnite makes epic alot of money but their long term goal is to build the most widely used game engine in the world and dominate the market (which they have almost done already). That makes wayy more money and not many people know that Epic is much more of a game engine business than it is a videogame business. They used fortnite to debut the new graphics (Chapter 5), physics (Goo guns, gravity guns ect) and other features that the engine has in order to promote it, which worked very well as fortnite is one of the biggest games in the world. Not even to mention the new creative maps (which are all created in a version of unreal engine). With the studios that make halo and many more switching to unreal epic sees fortnite as more and more of a way to promote their engine rather than a game. They sacrificed the soul and what made the game special to do this
Lots of good points in the comments, I’d also like to mention the sound design. A lot of the og sounds have been replaced in favor of more minimal or realistic ones which just makes the game feel more dull and less fun.
i remember the crack of the tack and the pump. genuinely just a great style for a game and it even went down to the style, such a shame at what we lost
Fortnite is the only game where i Truly had more fun with the older versions and isn't just nostalgia I loved both Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 Both is where 99% of my playtime came from Chapter 3 was Fun but i left after that when the OG Season arrived i played nearly everyday not for nostalgia but because the game felt like Fortnite Again and im glad im not the only one that realizes this isn't fortnite anymore it's a shitty attempt at a "Metaverse" P.S Great video and hope to see ya grow
For this being your first video, this is really good! Especially in the beginning where you didn't waste any time getting into the video & didn't talk about what Fortnite is as if we don't already know. ALOT of people do that & it tends to get annoying
First actual video and it’s 100% on point, thank you so much for actually explaining this because I’ve been saying that the artstyle has just been getting more realistic, and all my friends were saying I was tripping 🙏🙏
As much as I've enjoyed the really early days of Fortnite: BR. What I really hate about Epic is on how easy it is for them to abandon Save the World, it has huge potential to grow big, and also on how the Shop became a Clown fest with ugly skins. No more original OG skins. Anyway, here I am still playin Save the World.
they had the opportunity to make stw free to play at the launch of the metaverse but chose not to. ironically it pulls more players than the other modes do now despite not having any meaningful updates in 4 years
@@rogeliocano9536 if they made it free and gave added story parts to the 4th zone it would 100% be bigger than the lego mode was at it’s peak. The problem with stw is it has too much content to really be able to compare to whatever new modes they throw out there so they try to get players to forget about it
fortnite just announced they're permanently bringing back the "og" map, weapons and everything but it wont be the same unless they make that specific mode have the old movement, graphics, models, basically everything it used to. yeah ill have fun playing on the old map again but somethings gonna be missing and im gonna end up not playing it again, every since chapter 2 started i rarely play
I liked the balance of realistic and cartoony from chapter 2. A big reason Fortnite was successful like Minecraft because you used to be able to play it on ANYTHING now the system requirements keep getting higher and higher due to them constantly upping the graphics. Now it makes lower end PC's struggle a bit.
UE5 games are way over hyped.. They cram all this "realistic detail" in the game then blur over it with forced Anti aliasing. Older games are crisp and clear in comparison.
At this point they should make chapter 1 its own game. Knowing them your items wouldn’t carry over, they should make the battle pass go from level 1-1000 going through each seasons battle pass. They should have a map rotation between each chapter 1 map. It would be a lot more fun and simple just playing the Fortnite we know and love even if they made it an expensive ass standalone game.
First, that facts I stoped playing because of its lost of his artstyle like when they switched to chapter 4 the artstyle was not the same so realistic and not fun, also underrated asf
I actually liked chapter 4´s graphics and art style. For me it was the perfect mix between fortnite´s cartoonism and realism. It is high quality, modern and more realistic textures, but with bright and colorful tones, beatiful skybox and sunsets, made even better by the island being surrounded by space instead of infinite sea with ugly islands in the distance. If they just stayed with that art style, it would be great. But chapter 5 went down the wrong way sadly, being extremely realistic with dull colors and not so pretty biomes. Chapter 6 gives me hope tho, we can pray they listened to feedback, with the leaked new skybox and lighting looking better than ever.
i completely agree, chapter 4's weapons were super fun and it was a lovely balance between old fortnite but also all the new stuff, actually my favorite chapter for the first half, wasnt feeling the jungle that much
Yeah I can’t lie chapter 4 did have some charm to it, at least more than chapter 3 and 5. I really liked how the map looked like different dimensions being smashed into each other which you can see in locations like Faulty Splits.
@@caleb2569 compare it to the OG remix season, they remixed the skins to still match the season that it's inspired by with other aspects of Fortnite to pay homage and respect to the chapter. Shoving Snoop Dogg onto one of the most popular POI's doesn't do any of that. I'm just grateful that at least the BP doesn't include any of this trash.
super well put together video. i feel like i could show someone whos never heard of fortnite before this video and they would still find interest in it.
I think this applies to pretty much every aspect of the game. Imo the game fell off ever since Fortnite stopped trying to be Fortnite and is just a multiverse mish-mash of different properties, aesthetics, visuals, etc. The game was a lot better when it wasn’t trying to be anything but itself. All you have to do to for a visual example is look at the shop. Look at an image of the old skins and then go load up the shop on whatever day you’re reading this. It’s just collabs and generic looking UE models that could be ported into almost any game with some texture tweaks. The whole game is like that.
i heard that one of the reasons as to why fortnite changed their artstyle was so it could be easier to build in general, Like when the map builders wanted to stack boxes they couldn't because they were too crooked. So there could be more examples of how fortnites unique artstyle made it a burden to properly build a map.
8:37 I agree on all of the things you said, except bullet drop. It is way more fun playing without fcking bloom(I‘m dogshit at using weapons with bloom)
Nah it looks great during the day but at night pretty ugly imo I just don’t think it stays that true to the previous cartoony look. Imo the original look just gives off the best vibe and has the most character to it Chapter 2 feels very dull at times
chapter 2 was the perfect middle ground between the cartoony chapter 1 and refined chapter 3 (chapter 2 still utilised many chapter 1 assets, unlike chapter 3)

i feel like nobody talks about this but THIS is why og hit so hard, plus i got way more frames and simple games are so much more fun bc there isn't an overwhelming amount of mechanics and content flooding your brain. it was just to the point. -- great commentary man the whole analysis on the shape techniques was so well thought out, you going places man.
if it just stayed the way it was people would have gotten tired os the same old game and move on. So the game would have died

Yeah I get what you're saying and totally agree

@@ieath2o dude honestly this is a great video, and even though i never played in the chapter 1 or 2, i really feel that with the OG Season and now Chapter 2 Remix, the game feels so much more fun. Maybe it's cause im older but i think that the new artstyle is just depressing and feeling devoid of life, you know, it just feels kinda sterile.
What's worse, is fortnite is supposed to be even more "realistic" in chapter 6
Cus they want to get rid of the cartoon styles
Your editing style is straight out of 2016 I love it man you earned a sub
I think abandoning the cartoony feeling was one of their worst mistakes. Chapter 2 was fine tbh, in my opinion it was the perfect compromise between the old STW style and a proper, stand-alone battle royale. Other mistakes include:
- Completely disregarding the storyline, half-assing most of it over and over and OVER again even when it had some nice inspiration, because they feared putting too much effort in a coherent story;.
- Giving up on normal festivities, losing A LOT of the spirit of the first seaons when Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and so on would set on their own the real spirit of the season;
- Trying way too hard to feel like a "not for kids" game anymore, with the only result of making it look like another game for cringe teens who totally aren't gOiNg ThRoUgH a PhAsE MoOoOmhhh;"
- Putting waaay too much focus on collaborations (especially with irl hollywood celebrities who barely abybody actually wants) at the expense of original ideas and skins;
- Giving up on silly items and mechanics, because those sweaty streamers only crave for predictable, reliable metas.
Completely agree!
THAT WAS YOUR FIRST VIDEO HOLY SHIT BRO. THIS IS SOO WELL MADE
Chapter 1 felt like a fun post apocalyptic arena.
Chapter 2 felt like a new world to run around and ruin.

I was a little skeptical of this video being a bit more, as you said it, only focused on bright and cartoony graphics. But I was pleasantly surprised when I saw you mention the actual specific (I don't know what you would call them, motifs?) in the old props. I appreciate this video a lot, and this video should be the new standard when discussing Fortnite's old art style.
Bro no wonder i felt so depressed playing chapter 5 the style was completely dead and thrown out the window super soulless only thing we had going still was our character skins from the good era
It's still been goofy and fun
I played it so much trying to get the TV backpack that I realized it just wasn't as fun as it used to be. At the beginning of Chapter 5, most of the locations felt like the same village/mansion designs copied and pasted.
Well said. I feel the same
Great video!! That inclusion of the guides for the original art style really drove the point home!!
They sacrificed the soul and what made the game special to do this
after years of not uploading, you made a banger man, you earned a sub.

Fortnite is the only game where i Truly had more fun with the older versions and isn't just nostalgia I loved both Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 Both is where 99% of my playtime came from Chapter 3 was Fun but i left after that when the OG Season arrived i played nearly everyday not for nostalgia but because the game felt like Fortnite Again and im glad im not the only one that realizes this isn't fortnite anymore it's a shitty attempt at a "Metaverse"
P.S Great video and hope to see ya grow
Yeah Fortnite OG really proved how good simple Fortnite was and that it wasn't just nostalgia

@eddyteddy5138 around mid chapter 2 it got iffy but It was for sure my most played Chapter or at least VERY close second First place being Chapter 1
For this being your first video, this is really good! Especially in the beginning where you didn't waste any time getting into the video & didn't talk about what Fortnite is as if we don't already know. ALOT of people do that & it tends to get annoying
It’s always the TH-camrs with 500-8000 subs that make the best videos. You earned a sub🎉
Wish i could play save the world but its expensive as hell here
they had the opportunity to make stw free to play at the launch of the metaverse but chose not to. ironically it pulls more players than the other modes do now despite not having any meaningful updates in 4 years
@@GeekmunksI remember epic promising to make it free in chapter one and they never did
@@rogeliocano9536 if they made it free and gave added story parts to the 4th zone it would 100% be bigger than the lego mode was at it’s peak.
@@user-ne9sd4ow1odo you know what anti aliasing is?? And it’s never forced
@@PotateosHe means TAA specifically, which does blur the image more than other methods, and is forced in alot of modern games.
I think the detail from Chapter 2 mixed with the tapered/exaggerated proportions of Chapter 1 would be the perfect artstyle for the game.
4:14 she sneeze we all dead is WILD
At this point they should make chapter 1 its own game. Knowing them your items wouldn’t carry over, they should make the battle pass go from level 1-1000 going through each seasons battle pass. They should have a map rotation between each chapter 1 map. It would be a lot more fun and simple just playing the Fortnite we know and love even if they made it an expensive ass standalone game.
I do kinda like realistic fortnite but what I don't like is how everything is collabs now. Especially this ice spice season

Banger video for the first one you've made bro. Good stuff!
6:45 this made me realize how badly they neutered the art style
Chapter 1 looked one dimensional and bland as hell, it’s all the same color scheme of some washed out white and a mix of browns.
Never actually thought about it but now that I am thinking about it... The artstyle was so nice compared to what its now
I actually liked chapter 4´s graphics and art style.
