Replacing the Chinese assault rifle and assault carbine with that water cooled monstrosity was a crime

And making the BOS knights use that monstrosity of a rifle in the TV show was also a crime, one of many, they really couldn't just make a dozen laser rifle props.
And relocating Shady Sands just to nuke it, unreal.

Well, if you want to sell the game in China you have to yellow-wash the lore, like... a lot. Fallout 3 they were still okay with it, but Fallout 4 was very much "toe the line".

Then they could've just removed that rifle from the Chinese version of the game.
Similar to how the German copy of L4D2 was censored at launch, since then they've been given acces to the uncut version though.

@@Jono_McKto be fair they did sort of canonize it as just a BOS issued machine gun for Power Armor with that move. There's also plenty of weapons shown in use by the NCR as well in the last episode that are actual firearms.

IF the Fallout 4 "Assault rifle" was actually an Assault Machine Gun that had normal barrels with variants as the Infantry Configuration and both of the Water-cooled OR Air-cooled Barrels(implication is, separated cooling systems for variety) as the Infantry Confuguration that would be MUCH better. Also, an American Assault rifle(Stoner 63 platform, perhaps?) and the Chinese Assault rifle and pistol along with more awesome options would be great. Ammo variants in energy and ballistic ammunition would have been great, as well as the expansion of weapons arsenal to be used. Example, Laser pistol for the Small Energy Cells and Plasma Pistol for the Small Plasma Cartridges and stuff like proper handguns for pistol calibers, machine pistol calibers and revolvers, plus Handcannons as Power armor or High strength stat weapons, stuff like that. more shotguns, not just the double action and combat rifle, but also stuff like break actions for handgun only shotgun versions, plus various shotgun bore ammo versions of a lot of stuff. Pump action, lever action, semi auto only shogun variants would be great to have as well. the Not-Taurus Judge would have perfect as a shotgun option as well as a .45 long colt option. LMG for shotgun shells as well. Pistol Caliber carbines, more SMGs, more LMGs(laser and plasma LMG platforms could have been a thing to add in vanilla), stuff like repurposed mining equipment like a two handed drilling device used for autmated melee or a gauntlet with a drill ala Bioshock 2 Big Daddy protagonist melee would also work, laser cutter as a energy beam handgun and two handed heavy weapon beam cannon type also good idea.
more glorious additions to the arsenal would have been great!

If you look into the Fallout 4 art book you can see that the designers had a lot of "dark and gritty" ideas that were pushed aside because Bethesda was going for a destroyed 50's city of the future feel for Boston.
Fallout 76 already feels a lot more grounded than 4.

It feels like the perfect mix between the 50s retrofuturism of the newer games and the pure bleak atmosphere in the older games.
Hell, fallout 3 looks absolutely depressing for an environment despite the lighter tone. If you put the same ambience from the original games into 3 then you’d straight up have a faithful fallout 3 (in terms of atmosphere, writing is something else)

fun fact, the game used indexed images (instead of full RGB(A), pixels of every sprite are just a single byte (0...255) that maps to an array of 256 RGB colors), but the values of colors in that palette don't go above 63 in any channel for some reason. So everything is ¼ of how bright it could be and is then somehow adjusted to be brighter in the game.

seems like where Fallout 4 went wrong is that in design, "retro-futuristic" and "dark humor/morbidity" (cheerful music playing over brutal massacre etc) are the biggest and only selling points. like a product made to satisfy a need to stay relevant by just giving you better gameplay but more importantly, More Fallout... but without the spirit that gives Fallout its identity. it's less about loyalty to aesthetics and more about the message. like 16:12, there is just something captivating to me about this image. with exceptions of echos of the past like the NCR and the BoS, the progression of humanity as a whole has reset, fallout represents this in a lot of ways like the tribals' repurposing of futuristic armor giving them these primitive looking decorations, making them talk in broken English and caveman babble, depicting them as nothing but dumb savages, but it's as futuristic as it is primitive because humans have adorned their armor forever and always, languages are just as much alive as we are, and morals are just a long-lasting guide on how someone somewhere thinks life should be lived. it's both an example of the strength and ingenuity of humankind and a reminder of the permanent devastation of a total nuclear apocalypse.
modern Fallout just doesn't seem like it has anything new to say in that regard. i can only hope the total tonal overhaul of Fallout was done out of respect rather than otherwise

You're spot on with what Bethesda turned Fallout into; a goofy saturday morning cartoon themed around "radiation meets the Jetsons", but I think classic Fallout's theme wasn't "greed", but more about the inevitability of war.
It doesn't matter what you believe in, what flag you represent, where you were born, who you grew up with, what economic system you follow, what figures you idolize, what time period you lived in; humans will always find a reason to kill one another. To quote the Sniper from TF2; "As long as there's two people left on the planet, someone is gonna want someone dead." I mean, Fallout's tagline (which Bethesda bastardized) is "War. War never changes." not "Greed. Greed never changes."

What? New Vegas wasn't more of the same visual design as 3- It boldly broke new aesthetic ground by swapping everything being grey for everything being yellowish-brownish with occasional orange. Super original and distinctive. But seriously though, I'd say that change alone meant that while New Vegas may be the better game of the two, it does look different, and different for the worse. I'll take all greyish over all brownish any day.
As for 4's visual style, say what you will, but I think it was better for adding more color. I'll agree it went overboard with all the different highrise colors in Boston proper, but overall, I think the added color was collectively more steps forward than backward. Other than that though, yeah, I agree it took the retro 50's thing too far overall, and its take on ghouls was just bland. It took away the distinct skinless look and replaced it with... just a more generic kind of burn victim look? So still ugly, but now in a much blander way too. Definitely a design downgrade there.

It was the same guy? damn I thought Fallout 4 had a different art team as it looks nothing like Fallout 3. Fallout 3 still fits in well with the original games some things are missing but the weapons mostly look rather modern the G3, AK looking gun & all look similar enough to what existed in the original games. Fallout 4 just looks wierd. Some parts like the new looks for most creatures look amazing like the death claw & the Bloodbugs. But the guns range from alright to what is this meant to be. The armour generally looks ok a few are a bit cartoony but otherwise fine. But damn does the look of buildings range some look alright others look bizzare, But I feel like if we only assume boston looks like this we should be fine. I wouldn't expect all the cities to look the same Hell New Reno looks very different to the places in California but I think the looks need to feel reasonable. Hoping the next game takes from the good aspects of 76 & brings back older looks for ghouls & Supermutants.

He quit halfway through Fallout 4 from what I remember & the last thing he designed was the Deathclaw as he didn't want to risk someone else doing it & making it something he didn't like. As a gamer who played d&d in the seventies and then joined the adult world, I watched my kids play what we now consider the old school games in the nineties. I entered fallout through three when it came out and found it was playable without having to invest huge amounts of time. We can complain about progress (and I do sometimes) but it won’t change anything. I enjoyed three, New Vegas, and four. When the show came out I was a fan and felt like it was a decent continuation of the whole idea. Above all have fun, observe the continuity errors, mine what resonates, and keep in mind that if art is taken seriously it will almost always disappoint.

Many people did not connect to the STATED CONCEPT that this was an alternate Earth where it diverged from OUR world's timeline in the 1940s. It is a FICTIONAL WORLD and a fun game in and of itself. Climb the skill tree, blast your enemies, and have fun. IT'S A VIDEO GAME. There are lots of MODs so you can play YOUR WAY. Happy gaming. And yes, I own all the FO games.

Weirdly enough, feel like interplay would have tanked the series if they would have retained the rights nowadays too. With the layoffs and scandals we can see that the people who originally made fallout what it is would not have been there anymore. I’m sure Chris Avellone would have absolutely been tanked just as quickly, and who knows with Tim Cain except NO company has kept its passionate developers since the 2020’s.
What kind of game would interplay create in this corporate shareholder market? They wouldn’t have had enough muscle as Bethesda does to keep their skin in the game, how would they have bent to consumerism? Todd chose his methods, and actually had a choice in how to flanderize the series to make clout. He still did it, but of his OWN designs. I just don’t think interplay could have retained enough funds to keep the choices in their court anymore. We all know where our favorites go at that point, EA and black rock way of sold out and taken apart.

Think about modern cities across just the US & you see clear differences in the look of cities like New York & LA so it'd make sense for them not to look the same. However, the gaming style of 4, the absolute degradation of the rpg element into a watered down first person shooter with rpg-esque veneer added on, just disappointed me so much that I stopped playing FO4 after only a little bit, and haven’t looked back since. And that was 7 years ago.
But I’ve replayed FO3 as well as the first two several times since then, on top of the enormous amount of times I’ve replayed those already before FO4 came out.

The BOS has returned to being more culty and the color was taken out of cities and locations (to great effect) I honestly resonate with the show much more than 4 as it feels like the art style of new Vegas and 1 with the goofyness present in 2. @ Models and the art styles atmosphere are two different things. The buildings included are much closer to F3’s style of architecture and level of decay. Philly in the show was more reminiscent of the megaton than most of the designs seen in 4. While yeah it still adopts aspects of 4’s colorful design, I was pleasantly surprised how much more the show modeled the earlier fallouts trend of browns and grays being the primary color pallet.

4:25 core memory unlocked; had that exact toy robot as a kid but nobody could recall where it was from. Had a button that would eject the arms. Thanks for including that.

I think Fallout's art style is the most misunderstood design in history. Everyone refers to it as retrofuturism, but that is incorrect.
Retrofuturism is how an earlier era viewed the future. But in Fallout, it is how a future era views the past.
    Fallout's art design is futureretroism

Interesting video but the comments are insufferable. If they kept the same style, people would just accuse Bethesda of not being able to do anything original.

      That's a paradox.
You won't be an outcast if you make a LoTR games in the same fantasy style.
But you will definitely be one when you make it sci-fi.
      Same here.
Continuing an already established series with it's atmosphere isn't 'being unoriginal'.
