Oral hygiene SHOULD be a trend!! Especially since gum disease can increase risk of heart disease, strokes, infective endocarditis… We should be flossing every day! And brushing before breakfast to protect our teeth from acid, and ideally spit out the toothpaste without rinsing away all the fluoride (can be a bit gross though lol)

I went to a dentist that has a fluoride free practice, his argument being that fluoride is toxic and the amounts it’s toxic at aren’t agreed upon, and that there’s other things you can use that, alongside good hygiene, protect your teeth against cavities, so he thinks it’s better to use those instead. Thoughts?

I went fluoride free for about 10 years, and it completely ruined the health of my teeth ☹️. Switching back to fluoride helped reverse the problems! If you actually research both sides you will find that it is nowhere near as bad for your internal health as the anti-flouride people claim - AS LONG AS YOU DON’T SWALLOW/DRINK IT! 😂. And it will save you so much money in dental work if you use it for prevention.

I was a dental assistant for a few years, and fluoride toxicity is a thing, BUT you have to ingest the fluoride. So, there's not really any risk from toothpastes or mouthwashes unless you're swallowing it. It's a good idea to supervise small children when they brush, but for most adults it's very safe.

My parents had a new home built in 1971. “Avocado Green” and “Harvest Gold” were the trend at that time. I believe shag carpet will come back in some degree. I was a teen in the ‘70’s and the clothes I wore are back in style right now. Nothing new under the sun, except Covid. That’s why I “smile” at influencers who are critical of “outdated” homes . Everything will be outdated before you know it. My own thoughts are- buy what you personally love (even though it’s not trendy) and save your money for a secure future. It’s frivolous to try and keep up with trends. I’m always confused by people criticizing outdated homes, doing big renovations and then filling it with “vintage/thrifted” things- which are basically outdated.

After recently acquiring self esteem (!) I find the amount of time and money I now spend on dental care and skin is phenomenal. I always made sure my kids had good and consistent dental care, and I think having a good home grown diet helped them. Interestingly I have not had a single cavity since adulthood (I'm now 58), but I'm having to replace all the fillings I had as a child, which I suspect were not necessary. Looking after skin and teeth is a big commitment but it's an awesome feeling to be able to smile without being self conscious :)

Dr. Dray, I learned from you the lack of necessity of added colorants to body care products, and as such I avoid them whenever possible. Listerine sells two versions of their dye-free mouth wash with different active ingredients, I buy both and alternate.
Also, I know that Colgate is ADA approved and recommended by dentists (they always give me a travel size Colgate), but to my understanding sodium saccharin is not as strongly antibacterial as xylitol. I haven’t found any Vegan brands that sell toothpaste with stannous fluoride, so I currently alternate Hello brand sensitive style toothpaste which contained potassium nitrate.
Coco floss is the best and I wish dentists would give out a roll of that instead of the plasticky nylon thread.

you can cut the skin care product tube in half (with scissors) and get all the product that’s left there out. it’s usually quite a good amount of product left and the majority of people just throw it away. just a tip for those who are on a budget, or want to be more sustainable.

Thank you for not bashing fluoride! It's so important in preventing cavities. Here's my advice, as a dentist, about mouthwashing - do it before brushing, or at a separate time altogether. Your toothpaste has much more ppm fluoride than your rinse, you want to spit out the excess toothpaste and leave the rest in there to fully allow the fluoride to penetrate the teeth. If you rinse with mouthwash straight after brushing you are just diluting this process. I think you will enjoy Teeth Talk Girl's youtube channel. Also thank you for your vape video the other day, this was really helpful for me in my work and I intend to share it with my colleagues :)

@@khyatiurfmaya In most people no, flossing not only removes any food debris stuck between the teeth but on a microscopic level it is disrupting the bacteria that lives in the mouth from "setting up camp" in those places. There is no way a regular brush or moutheash can do this as effectively. If the bacteria builds up it forms plaque which leads to gum disease, (and cavities if your diet is also sugary). Everyone is different though, some people are more genetically prone to gum disease with only a small amout of plaque whereas some people can get away with it more. Generally flossing will do you good and doesn't take long when you get the hang of it.

Can I ask what is your opinion on xylitol in toothpaste? More specifically, for preventing gum disease? I really like a toothpaste that is fluoride free (I know you won’t agree with that), but it contains xylitol, hydrated silica and calcium hydroxyapatite.

    • @kiri-gabriella
      @kiri-gabriella 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@norainnoflowers1557 The main thing when it comes to gum disease is that you are brushing regularly and thoroughly to remove all plaque - that's brushing every area of gumline using extra tools to reach areas you can't with your brush such as interdental brushes and/or floss and smaller brushes e.g. for wisdom teeth. The bacteria that cause disease is the plaque so you want to remove enough of it for your gums not to develop disease.
With regards to xylitol, albeit safe for teeth, as yet there simply isn't enough significant research and evidence to suggest it is beneficial in reducing cavity risk or gum disease (the unproven theory is once the harmful bacteria process the xylitol they can no longer process sugar which leads to decay, so essentially they starve to death). But you are at a higher risk of developing decay without fluoride in your toothpaste.

I don’t want to take tablets as they can damage your liver. I have tried numerous pharmacy products and am allergic to tea tree oil.

I can't use any of these "newer" toothpastes with all the different flavors/whitening etc... Including Sensodyne. One time I had a huge sore caused by a cinnamon flavored toothpaste!! My dentist and I discovered that I am highly sensitive to all that and I used to get lots of canker sores and my gums were very sensitized, so it's the basic Colgate for me and the plain old fashioned Scope (watered down to avoid too much alcohol), and of course daily flossing. I have been able to reverse gum issues and I couldn't be happier.

Yes I don’t know why they put so many flavors in toothpaste, mint and cinnamon are known to be irritating to skin within herbalism but companies load up things intended for our mucous membranes! Wish there were more flavorless pastes on the market.

I’m so sensitive to SLS so I’m afraid to try mouth rinses. Anything with whitening seems to be the worst for me. I can only use Sensodyne toothpaste. I’m an avid glosser. Floss after everything I eat. I get the fluoride treatment at the dentist office which really seems to help.

@@sable7114 The flouride rinse is ideally used between brushing times (your enamel is softened after eating so brushing will increase wear on your teeth). Flouride rinse with flossing stops the softening/erosion process especially at the gum line and behind the front or inter dental areas of the teeth. Using the mouthwash after brushing can help seal in the tubules in your teeth. However most people don't know to leave the toothpaste on the surface of the teeth so following up with a rinse with fluoride after you've rinsed away the stuff in your paste on accident is nessisary.

I love your Videos, especially your vlogs. You're so smart and I love to listen to your opinion to different things. "To be grateful to have an identitiy to steal " made me laugh :D I know a dentist and she recommended this routine to me years ago: 1) interdental brushes (first the big one than the smaller) 2) floss 3) brush teeth. From time to time: oral probiotics (ProlacSan Lactobacillus). She also told me to switch the tooth paste more often and that 3 min are not enough for the teeth. I know that it's different for everyone because of genetics but I never had caries so I'm sticking with my routine:) Decor? Hm, not really my style, but I love the 70s fashion :) Especially the Jeans:) I live in germany and Halloween is not really popular here- the last couple of years children are enjoying it.

It took about 2 weeks for me to fully notice for sure, but my gums hurt 24/7 by then, so I switched toothpaste and it slowly went away. Studies have come out saying that flossing isn't really a necessary step in a good oral routine. I think that dentists just recommend it because they don't think that it can hurt and they've been taught that it's a necessary step -- the data just doesn't back it up.
