UPDATE: Historically, you want to use the Bomber element: CLOSE formation option, and the normal combat box task, or the altitude separation formation and the javelin task. But not the OPEN formation, that places the bombers too far apart.

Excellent tutorial, thanks for sharing this! Finally I understood the Big Formation logic and also very useful optimization tips.

Wow, amazing topic. Have not planed to do this today or tomorrow, but will defenitely add this on my DCS to di list😎
    Many thanks for sharing

thanks, this was perfect for creating a small but intensive bomber-formation benchmark for assessing the effect of hardware / software changes

Thanks for the explanation! I was trying to play around with this to see DCS render that iconically ominous aerial steamroller and the interface is not exactly self-explanatory, but now it makes perfect sense and works great~
Do you know if this works for modern bombers as well? There's certainly a formation called "modern bomber element" but they just leave you hanging about what that is and what you can or should do with it, and I'm wondering if it's still meant to work with "Big Formation" or if it's just something else entirely. Obviously precision munitions and SAMs began to make it happily a thing of the past, but purportedly carpet bombing was still used extensively even up through Vietnam (I was only able to find photos of three B-52s dropping in formation but text and paintings hinted at much larger formations as well), and in an alternate world setting all doctrinal bets are off anyway in the interests of drama, but to use this with B-52s and/or Tu-95s or even beyond, do you know if there's anything different you need to take into account, or with the "modern bomber element" formation are they already smart enough not to bonk into and drop bombs on each other?

First of all, you helped me a lot *thanks* i tried to do it exactly like you but my bombers are too stupid to turn at the waypoint (they crash each other, mostely)and they drop exactly 1 bomb *lol* but it´s my first try hope i will find my bug soon ;-)

Great video thanks for your time, in my case the "roe: weapon hold" trick doesn't work they still shoot .50, all of them 😕

Ok it seems like I've found another solution, rather than using "ROE" I'm just switching all B-17s (that I want gunners to stay passive) to "civil plane" and it works great 👌👍

Great video! I dont know what is wrong but I follow this tutorial and others before to the point but the bombers "chickens out" just before the target and if Im lucky, they only drop ONE bomb even if I select to drop all of them. I dont know if it is a bug in the game...Thats the problem with DCS, you can sit for hours and even days trying to learn something that turns out to be imposible because of bugs :( Sorry for my bad english.

Thanks for this, very interesting, I am currently playing your blue nosed bastard's of bodney campaign and enjoying it very much.👍 Just one thing I noticed when large formations of B17s drop there bombs it makes the game lag quite a bit.

How would I make a single ai aircraft mission that would taxi from parking to runway, take off, fly a racetrack pattern a number of times then land. I would like to have it so that my pilots wanting extra formation flight practice could do it in this mission. Is it also possible to set trigger points that would trip small audio files announcing turns etc?

    72 B-17s with 12 bombs each, that’s 864 bombs to be dropped!!
I wonder how it would work with 72 F-4Es with 12 Mk-82s each?
    Or 72 B-52Ds with 84 Mk-82s internally and 24 M117s externally, each!? 7,776 total bombs…a logistics nightmare. Sounds like a GrimReapers mission for sure. 😂. …if we had a big-belly B-52D in DCS. Moders??

do you have to adjust their waypoints after copy and pasting?

No, that's the beauty of it. Right from the moment they start they only focus on following the lead.
