  • 1 of 5 in Beginner Guide to Mission Editor in DCS, and it covers Triggers, Flags and Zones (aka trigger zones).
    The video is setup in such a way you dont have to watch it all, when you think you've got it, you can quit - but for those who prefer a bit more detail, with extra examples showing how to use triggers and flags together, just keep going. There's also guides on using radio menus with the flags, and how to make stuff happen in mission (we all know the F10 radio menu - this is it). And finally a guide to blowing stuff up and smoke markers, all driven from units, groups going into trigger zones, that we've setup to "do stuff" based on the mission editor triggers, in DCS.
    Episode 1 of 5, be sure to check the introduction to mission editing if not already, and subscribe for further tutorials.

      Yeah I'm a leader of AC_'s, I'm AC_Snowman, on DCS. We love SARS missions. Heli's are out thing. So I am creating them too. The one's I see keep going down for too long on servers. And I don't get it. lol So Ima make my own now :-)

    Thank you for taking the time to make this in the format that you have. Super easy to follow and pick up, you've made this one of the more painless aspects of DCS altogether. However, I do have one small complaint. Since I have learned how to use the mission editor, at least enough to be dangerous, my free time seems to have disappeared.

    Great job of explaining the linear and non-linear logic of mission editing (I'm old, just started DCS and learned BASIC language in 1974). The only thing that would help me is if you could set your action volume down when you are talking. I could use the CC but it turns the focus away from the action.

      I appreciate the feedback. my old sound setup broke (you heard the last recording or so from it) and it's since been replaced... Still appreciate the feedback though as I might not have noticed. =)

    Dooood! You're awesome!!!!
    I've been struggling through making my own missions for a while. I can basically Spawn two airplanes so I can have a dog fight, or maybe blow something up on the ground. Triggers were super confusing. Now I can actually start building legitimate missions thanks to tutorials. I appreciate your work

      Thank you very much for your kind words. It is comments and feedback like yours, that give me the motivation to make more videos. I know sometimes my tutorial videos are more lengthy, but sometimes going over the same thing 2-3 times for those new to mission editing is more helpful to get it ingrained. Do let me know if there's anything specific you'd like to see.

      You're very welcome! After learning how to put a unit down into the map, understanding what triggers, zones and flags do, is absolutely crucial to anyone wanting to use the editor. I am always happy to read a comment left by someone, who saw this video, and had the idea clicked into place. Especially when I know they'll be able to go away, and take all their future missions to the next level.

      That's a really nice comment and I think back, I was making videos with zero subs - we all start that, then I had 4-5 subs and then a couple weeks went by, i checked and it was over 100 - so you must have had your finger on the pulse early on. I will keep creating content as time allows, and hope you'll stick with me for the ride.

      Thank you for the feedback. I realised my sound setup was totally messed up, I had an old audio mixer that broke, and was trying to make do and it just wasn't working. I've since bought a new little audio mixer that allows me to change the volumes and hear the results on the fly, and so this shouldn't be a problem again. Either way I appreciate you for pointing it out, as I might not have realised. Thx

    Good tutorial. Good explanation of flags and triggers. Rather than using silly names for stuff though, I would suggest using more descriptive names. I understand that you wanted to make the point that as long as unique names are used, they could be almost anything, but more logical and more descriptive names would certainly help if you were building a bigger mission.
    With all that said, please accept this as (hopefully) constructive criticism. I've only watched the first two of the series, but I'll definitely watch them all. You clearly have a handle on this stuff, and you've got a clear way of explaining things.
    Thanks! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

    Man what a nightmare it must be keeping track of what you are using flags for. The fact that they are not able to be named is mind boggling to me. The only reason I can think of is maybe it was a performance / memory constraint.

    Great video. Question: Am I correct in stating that the main purpose of flags is to simplify things by not having to have many lines of trigger actions?
    I.e, say instead of having three trigger event lines in the dialog doing whatever, you could replace them with one flag line in the dialog and have the same desired actions.
    If not, what is the advantage to using flags vs. triggers to do the same thing?

  • @diggler64
    @diggler64 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very good. Thanks. I'm just scratching my head as to why we need to use flag... can't we just test the conditions (simple or complex) and in the action instead of setting flag you actually do the action. Flags seems superfluous. Maybe I'm missing something.

    Nice tutti. So I can pick them up, but I cannot drop them & see them too. But I can empty the chopper of the weight when I get them properly configured to do so without seeing them on the ground. Like at a faiclity.

    How do I set up a trigger to control multiple things. What I would like is, when my buddy blows up a certain object on thr map. I would like that explosion to launch scuds at his base and activate the AAA and launch some migs to fight him...is this possible or is it gonna be a pain to set up?

    Hi, fantastic tutorial series, just one question where do I find a safe suitable sound effects download which I could use similar to what you use, I’ve been looking online but there is soooo many. Any help appreciated, thanks again from all us “beginners” for all the time you put into these tutorials. 👍

    • @DCSDigitalCombatSimulator
      @DCSDigitalCombatSimulator  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for your comments. Hearing myself back on these earlier videos I did kinda makes me cringe!
      To your question, unfortunately I can only think of 1 "safe" suggestion, and that involves some sort of payment for such a product, but I do have a longer, safer, free-er answer for you too...
      I use a service to licence all my royalty free music (on many of the newer videos on the channel), and the service also has tens of thousands of sound FX. I'll paste you my referrals link, because you can get a month's free trial on me by using it.
      Download and use all the effects (and/or music) you like, and so long as you cancel your membership before the end of the month, it won't cost a penny.
      share.epidemicsound.com/hymwil
      I'm not for a moment suggesting you should keep the service longer term, but during a free month, you can easily get all the sound effects can can ever think of, by searching or browsing through categories, including a whole bunch of bleeps and dings, radio effects, explosions, bullets etc.
      I might do a video on it one day, but I'll make it clear now, and will need to make it clear then - I do not think people wanting to download some sound effects will benefit by paying a recurring fee. IMHO, to use music on a TH-cam channel is worth the recurring fee, but not for downloading a bunch of sound effects.
      I Don't want people thinking I'm trying to push their service, and risk upsetting thousands of subscribers, just on the off chance someone pays up, so I can get a 10% discount. (You know how some people get!)
      I really hope this helps.

    Thanks for the video! However, I've been having trouble with group activation lately. I've had multiple missions where I've tried part of blue coalition in zone, I've tried adding each individual blue unit in zone as separate conditions for the group activate, and I still can't get the group to activate in all 3 missions I've tried it in. I basically want an enemy air unit to spawn in when one of the allied jets flies into the zone, and no matter what I try, the enemy air unit doesn't spawn

    • @DCSDigitalCombatSimulator
      @DCSDigitalCombatSimulator  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for slow reply...
      Have you tried something like this...
      Enemy aircraft (AI group) set to fly (or takeoff) in area you want, and set to "late activation".
      Put a big circular (or rectangular) zone down, over area you want to cause it to activate the enemies.
      Then set a trigger to something like this (leave all options default, apart from what's written - use common sense to replace the various NAMES)...
      trigger settings:
      PART OF COALITION in zone (ZONENAME).
      over in the right, it's a case of activate group (ENEMY-AI-GROUP).
      It's important when setting to do something, it doesn't already start the mission activated - for example the above trigger would NOT work, if we started the mission, and there was a friendly truck within the entire trigger zone, as this basically prevents the trigger from being switched on, and therefore activated.
      If you're still having difficulties, please feel free to email me your mission file (my email details are easy to find) and I'll gladly take a look for you, and help if at all possible.

    Thansk for this! Question, does that mean I can setup triggers and flags in the radial menu to control the mission in real time? o7

  • @bjondersson
    @bjondersson 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It’s strange and quite annoying that they require flags to be numbers and not (descriptive) strings. With numbers only it’s impossible to remember what they mean, without keeping notes outside the game. Is there any reason for them being numbers? For example, would you ever store a flag number and increment it?
    Edit: I just checked, and you can give the flags string names. They don’t have to be numbers.

    • @DCSDigitalCombatSimulator
      @DCSDigitalCombatSimulator  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They added the ability to use names as well since I did the video.
      Probably worth me doing a new tutorial at some point, as there's been a few changes.
      Cheers

    Seems over complicated. I think most people just want to spawn certain enemy when they do certain things in a mission. Not sure what all the flag business is about. Didn’t make it past 20 min.
