  • Unboxing and taking a first look around JVC's compact 4K professional camcorder, the GY HM170. It's almost identical to the more expensive GY HM200 but the HM200 adds an XLR audio handle, SDI output and live streaming capabilities.

    how would this camera's in built stabilization compare to sony's x70 or canons xa 25? Im guessing theres no dynamic stabilization since you did not show any footage of if (only optical). I need dynamic stabilization for run and gun situations, thx :)

      Very hard to give a descriptive comparison but also as I have not directly tested them against each other I can't really say. The JVC system was certainly reasonably effective though, I thought.

    It looks like a wonderful machine, but it is slightly outside my price bracket. Thanks for introducing me to it though. All the best.

    Hi, I believe the 3.5 mic input you were looking for is the one labeled "AUX" on the back of the cam.

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did consider that as I said it but normally I'd expect an Aux terminal to be line level. However you are indeed correct, it is a mic-level input. Phew!

    What is the length when there is no lens hood on?

    Very entertaining unboxing. Thanks for posting. I just sold my old and trusted Canon XF-100. I need something as good but with a longer zoom. I see you also have a Canon XF-200... How do the two of them compare? Do you prefer one over the other?

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never had an XF100 so can't directly compare with the XF200. Lots of this are obviously different - longer lens, better ergonomics, different recording formats. I'd certainly prefer the 200 over the 100. Be aware that the XF200 does have a somewhat noisy image though even in decent light. Canon have just released a firmware update which is supposed to address this issue at the cost of some image crispness but in my (very hasty) test I couldn't see a difference.

    You should also point out that it, like the 200 doesn't come with a battery charger.

    it's been a few days now. any updates on this camera yet? what are your pros and cons so far? I'm glad the 3.5mm 'Aux' is the mic input. i was worried a prosumer camera like this wouldn't have a mic input. why did they call it 'Aux' instead of 'mic'. weird....

      No updates yet, I've been both preparing my reviews of the Panasonic VX870 and Sony AXP33, but more distractingly, preparing to put my house up for sale so I'm a bit behind. Will be filming with the cam next week, so videos to come after that.

      UKAirscape I look forward to your review of the GY-HM170. I am trying to decide if I should get this camera or the Sony AX100. Can you please test out shooting this in low-light? Also please test the Optical Image Stabilization. I read the Image Stabilization on the Sony AX100 is no good. Thanks!

      @UKAirscape  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not "no good" but it's not brilliant.

    I have one of these now and am using an Audio Technica pro24 mic plugged into the aux input. Switched it to manual and all the way up to 10/10 and it's very, very quiet. Lots of static-sounding background noise because of the high input level on channel. Do you have any idea what might be causing it by any chance please? Perhaps I'm doing something amateurish, but the audio level just isn't going up much past -30 db on level 10/10. The onboard mic goes up to between -20 and -10 easily with the channel set to 6/10.

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +christopher dwyer Have you got a fresh battery in the mic?

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +christopher dwyer Got the battery the right way round? I know these sound like silly questions but it's exactly these odd little things that trip people up sometimes.
      Also, I can't recall if there's a menu setting in the camcorder to toggle the Aux input between mic and line levels. If there is, and if it's set to Line, that would cause the problem. So have a look and see if there's a way to toggle it to "mic" sensitivity.

    • @christopherdwyer4483
      @christopherdwyer4483 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +UKAirscape yes, just opened a new pack of batteries today

    • @christopherdwyer4483
      @christopherdwyer4483 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      UKAirscape It's definitely the right way around. The instructions say positive toward the head of the mic. I've got both channels set to aux mic, at level 10, on full manual mode, but it's much quieter than the internal mic. If I blow on it on put it down on something noisy, the levels shoot right up, but when speaking it's very quiet. It's a used pro24, but supposed to function as intended. It must be faulty / damaged.

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, how far away from it are you / the subject when speaking. Any mic like that, as an on-camera mic, is really only useful for picking up ambient sound. It should work with someone speaking in close proximity (say 1m max) but above that and it will be very quiet and nasty.

    Sorry,
    if I'm not in the right place. I write out of desperation, I really need help.
    This is a translation from French to English on google because I speak French
    and not English. You control the JVC well. I would just like to increase the
    built-in audio volume of my new JVC GY-HM170 camera. the sound is very very
    low. If a high-pitched sound is emitted at 1cm from the camera in an isolated
    room without noise, the recorded sound is still weak. I downloaded the user
    manual (notice) in French because I am French-speaking, but I still have not
    found a solution. I don't use a handle or an external microphone, nothing, only
    the Camera. I film automatically. there is an external volume button on the
    camera near SHUTTER, but when I increase it does not influence the sound.
    please help me or direct me to the right address or someone could help me.
    thank you so much

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I cannot help as I do not have this camcorder any more, it was only on loan for review. The volume control near the shutter button will probably be for the headphones rather than the recording volume.

    If I drop it will it break easily?

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends from how high, onto what, and with what force you drop it. It doesn't feel as though it would take much abuse.

      UKAirscape Could you also compare how this looks next to the HDR-CX900/PXW-X70?

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Finchspielberg I no longer have either of those cameras (one was sold, one was only on loan) so I won't be able to do a direct comparison but hopefully you'll get the gist from what I post.

    la JVC GY HM 200 no tiene salida por sdi en 4K solo exporta señal 1080, muy mala elección al comprarla.. realmente no es 4K

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a bit unfair to claim. It is 4K sensor, and recording. Many people would use such a camcorder “as is” without an external recorder because that’s usually the point of this type of camcorder.

    Problem JVC GY-HM200U. Purple Mud.

    Good afternoon!
    I have found some problems with the JVC GY-HM200U.
    I upload file fragments here:
    www.ex.ua/136355162906
    The essence of the problem - the LED light (certain part of the spectrum) can kill the picture quality.
    In view of this as purple mud.
    Real Light (which I see eye) at this moment is not purple. Rather, it is white.
    But GY-HM200U turns him into the dirt. I have a lot of files of this defect.
    I shoot dance (disco). Again, the LED light (some part of the spectrum) gives rise to the purple mud.
    Only in this case - to run the purple mud point.
    Camera settings - the factory.
    WDR - off
    Firmware V0106-0096 (June 2015)
    I think that the problem is not my camcoder. This is a problem model JVC GY-HM200U.
    Help me find the truth!
    I do not know well enough English to explain the details.

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Игорь Савостьяненко That's a strange effect! Have you told JVC about it? I can't think of any good solution, sorry.

    • @user-ol7ow3nn7k
      @user-ol7ow3nn7k 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +UKAirscape I write support (JVC in USA)
      While they are silent. I wrote a comment to someone else tried to remove the video dance (LED lights).
      I think that my camera is faulty. But in the daylight it works well.
      If this problem is the model GY-HM200U? Why did no one notice this?

    • @UKAirscape
      @UKAirscape  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They probably didn't notice because the issue may only occur in a specific set of circumstances with particular lights. Or it could be that you have a faulty camera. Let us know what JVC say when they reply.

      OK. If they answer.

      The problem isn’t the camera, it’s rather you because u need to tweak the settings to be able to film in low light. Can’t expect to use default settings to film in low light.. Get to know your cam inside and outside
