    Good intro video on the JVC 170. This camera shoots high mbps in HD and 4k. With all these controls it can shoot movies with substantial movie set lighting. The operator (D.P.) can have a ball with the lighting set ups and the massive JVC camera controls. I scoped my JVC 170 out in the standard and cine mode and it leaves lots of room for post production color grading.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TRONICVISION Yes I agree. It shoots at 50mb in 4:2:2 color in HD. People sleep on this camera. It seems like JVC is used a lot in news but freelancers that do a variety of work aren't hip to it. I just purchased the JVC Ls300 which is very similar in terms of layout and functions but the 35mm sensor makes it a power house compared to the 170u. Much better for film making. I have a few videos that I will be posting about it. Thank you for your comment!

      This camera isn't good in low light situations. Not much you can do but keep the iris wide as possible. You can increase the gain, but the more you increase it, the grainier the image. It's up to you to determine what is acceptable. Test it out before the performance. Have the lights turned on the same way they will be for the performance, and practice a little. I don't like going over 15db personally but maybe a higher number looks good to your eye. It's subjective.

      I never used one of those switchers, but maybe check that you are sending out the correct resolution A/V Set >Resolution. Other than that, I'm not sure. If you have an external monitor see if it works with that. it could be something with the way you have switcher configured.

      NEMO MONTEFLORES keep in mind that files larger than 4GB are not compatible with drives formatted in FAT 32 (older Windows format-but also one of the only formats that works reliably on both Windows and MacOS.) So if you change this setting and try to transfer to a drive formatted this way, it won’t work.

    good reviews of this and JVC LS-300. I have the JVC LS300 and a slew of Nikon MF and Rokinon lenses. I am going to be doing a bunch of quick hand held/tripod semi interview, run and gun promotional web videos and was thinking of either getting a $500-$1,000 Lumix M43 lens to use on the LS-300 as a "camcorder" rocker zoom type of camera, or for about the same higher end money at new or used JVC 170 like this. Since you have used both which would you kind of recommend in real world experience? On my JVC LS-300 I shoot J-Log only, but I can mimic decently the final 709 with LUT applied by shooting Cinema Gama with Color Matrix 709, comes close but not quite as good.. So I imagine the JVC 170 not having J-Log could get as close as well? IF the JVC 170 Cinema Gama with Color Matrix 709 is similar to the JVC LS300 that I have then it's probably good enough... though getting a $500-$1,000 M43 Panasonic Lumix zoom lens shooting J-Log would rock as well. flip a coin? or would the physical package of the 170 win over the the slightly better image quality of the LS-300 with M43 zoom?

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting question. I can say that colors coming out of the 170u are very similar to what comes out of the ls-300, so matching shots won't be too much of an issue. My problem with the power zoom on m4/3 lenses is that none of them are very fast, so if any of your run and gun happens indoors, i think you'll be at a disadvantage. Especially because the LS300 really suffers at any ISO pushed above 3200. Honestly at 3200 the picture is acceptable, but not good. Do you feel the same or is it just me? I had the panasonic 45-175 power zoom and sold it because it was too close of a focal range, and just not practical for all around shooting. I know there are some wider options, but the widest they open is f3.5. Maybe there are some newer ones that I am not familiar with though. I personally use a sigma 17-50 f2.8 with prime zoom and find that to be a good all around option.It's only about 200-300 used and with prime zoom you can still do some slow pushes if you need and more than double the zoom range. Plus it is image stabilized. I use it with a mft - canon kipon AF adapter($240 new). I've used the sigma 18-35 f1.8 which has outstanding picture quality, but it is a bit wide and has no stabilization, and is pretty heavy. I don't have much nikon glass, but I'm betting you could buy an AF adapter and a really good nikon or sigma lens and maybe lean on the prime zoom instead.
      Onto the 170u some more. If your run and gun is outdoors or well lit indoor areas, then it is a good option. If not, you will hate the image you get out of the camera. It won't come close to the LS300 , and you will be frustrated. Let me know what you wind up doing, I'm very interested.

    • @alexshdvideo
      @alexshdvideo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your info. Seems like my idea probably won't work as well as I had hoped... I have never used the M43 lenses and thought it would be a slam dunk, but doesn't sound like it. Also B&H sent me this pdf of tested lenses with the LS300 www3.jvckenwood.com/english/download/catalog/pdf/gy-ls300_lens.pdf Hmmm have to rethink about this. Maybe a B4 mount and a 2/3 ENG lens, or just shoot 1080p and do the prime zoom, or the JVC 170 or really go off into the woods with the Blackmagic Pocket with the RedRock-Retroflex and a Nikon MF zoom and just not do motorized zooms. (go for the super 8 hand held feel and shoot raw or at least ProRes HQ) Totally lost now...
      As far as ISO I am nearly always doing J-Log and forcing the ISO/Gain to 400/0 instead of the stock 800 ISO. I generally don't like the ISO above 1,600 due to noise and I see it even at ISO 800... ON THE OTHER HAND.. I recently started using an incident light meter (Lumu meter plugged into my iPod Touch with the Cine Meter II app) my consistency has improved radically. Having tried the expose to the right of the in the Histogram that everyone recommends (only worked 25% of the time for me) I like finding the incident or reflected middle grey and or open up slightly to put 18% grey card at 35-40% (recommended by JVC for J-LOG) instead of 50% that is usually read off the meter... but I find the 18% grey card at 35-40% in the spot meter is only make a half a stop more open than the incident meter which is more consistent than holding the grey card... So I'll have to retry the recommended ISO of 800 and higher ISO's. To be honest I'm usually using Rokinon T1.5 lenses with 1/64 ND and still getting T4 or T5 so I rarely need faster ISO.
      Also I'm not doing weddings anymore so I don't need to work with dim lighting. Oh and yes Sony seems to have been king for twenty years or more of the low light sensors and low light amplification and built in noise reduction and the best LCD's onboard cameras. But then I left Sony a long time ago for JVC since I could get more film like image to my taste than similar Sonys. IF I was doing weddings, I would probably have to look at the huge Sony line.

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At least you have some options. The way the camera is designed allows for lots of them. I do a lot of weddings, but my budget was limited at the time of my purchase. I felt the JVC- LS300 would get me the best bang for buck. I almost purchased and old Sony FS100, but hated not having the option to shoot 4k, among other things. I don't have a ton of clients asking for it, but I know it is only a matter of time. I knew I could get a Sony A7s but I really hate not having the multitude of buttons and switches to toggle things quickly, and I really like having ND filters built in. I'm going to hang onto this camera for some time and hope that JVC puts out a firmware update to deal with the noisy picture because other than that, I really like the camera.

    found a solution. I don't use a handle or an external microphone, nothing, only

      The colors are not the greatest straight out the box, you have to play with the settings a bit. Don't be afraid to go into camera process and mess around with saturation, black levels, and detail or try a different color matrix. If you mess it up, simply reset at the bottom of the menu. I made a video about tweaking the colors th-cam.com/video/GA2eVljsV3s/w-d-xo.html fast forward to about the 7:20 mark or so. If you still don't like it, maybe take a look at the canon xa50 or perhaps the panasonic x1500 or x2000. Much more spendy though.

    I let someone use my camera. The person told me he switched it off 4K and downgraded it.
    Now I can't find where to put it back to 4K.
    Do you know how?

    • @MichaelWTurner
      @MichaelWTurner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. Menu>system>record set>record format. Change system from HD to 4k and then go from there

      If your talking about viewing clips on the camera. Hold down the mode button by the power switch. From there just select your clip with the joystick and press it to play the one you want

      Michael Turner thank you really much for the fast answer! I would have another question: I have a 128GB card, would it be able to record for 8 hours? Or do I have to shrink the quality settings and if I have to, which one would be the right one?

      @@DerSaM If you put the card in your camera, it will show you how many minutes you will get on your card. Format it first to ensure it is completely empty(backup your footage if needed) and hit the display button if you don't see the minutes.

    Sorry,
    if I'm not in the right place. I write out of desperation, I really need help.
    This is a translation from French to English on google because I speak French
    and not English. You control the JVC well. I would just like to increase the
    built-in audio volume of my new JVC GY-HM170 camera. the sound is very very
    low. If a high-pitched sound is emitted at 1cm from the camera in an isolated
    room without noise, the recorded sound is still weak. I downloaded the user
    manual (notice) in French because I am French-speaking, but I still have not
    found a solution. I don't use a handle or an external microphone, nothing, only
    the Camera. I film automatically. there is an external volume button on the
    camera near SHUTTER, but when I increase it does not influence the sound.
    please help me or direct me to the right address or someone could help me.
    thank you so much
