The GY-HM170 comes with the same handle and XLR inputs now. With the Black Friday Sale, it's under $1000. I'd also like to point out that the GY-HM200 comes with a larger battery than the GY-HM170. These cameras aren't perfect, but they're excellent 4K run and gun cameras on a budget.
Well, the 200 is simple: there's a dedicated button to turn OIS (user button 6, labeled 'OIS/6') In the menu there's an option to turn the stabilisation to 'normal' and 'high'. Don't know about the 170.
Hard to guess without seeing it and more information. Were the level meters flickering when you recorded? Did you hear the sound in your headphones as you were recording? Etc
hey can anyone help me with a problem I have with this camera. is there a reason why I can't hear any audio while i'm recording? Literally my headphone are plugged in and I can't hear anything unless I rematch the video. I want to be able to hear everything while the audio is being recorded, not just replaying it after I finish shooting?
Nice job and very helpful. That second LCD peaking is the reason I have some sub par footage because I was trying to re-focus based on the LCD during shoots and the results were not good. I was fooled. Looking at your boat footage full screen on my iMac 27'' gives me reason to hope. It looks fantastic and so far I've yet to achieve footage like that. I wouldn't buy this camera again based on low light perf and hoping I can trade in but in the mean time I'll live with it. I mostly shoot speakers who are standing in fluorescent lighting and any tips on camera settings for that would be great.
Yes, it can do nice pix, within certain parameters. I don't have any good tips for fluorescents, sorry, they are hideous lights to film under. Can you add extra lights?
This camera vs Sony PXW-X70 vs sony hxr nx80 vs sony pxw z90? What should I get? Im on a budget and want to start making short film + advert and a few documentaries
Outstanding review, thank you! I am currently considering this camera because I like the idea of having 4k but after watching the review, I'm a little worried about how it will be in low light. 4k isn't that big of a priority for me right now, but B&H is having that great deal...The other camera I'm considering is the new Canon Xa30 which seems like it will be great for low light. The majority of my experience has been with Canon products as well so part of me is thinking I should stick with that. Any thoughts on what direction you would reccommend?
Tricky one, that. I wouldn't rate the JVC for low light just because you need to keep that lens above f2. That said, I've not put it up against an XA20 (or 30 since it's not out yet I think) so it may be great in comparison. The obvious advantage of the JVC would be physically more controls for quicker access, compared to the Canon's handful of buttons and single control ring. Then again, I had an XA20 for a couple of years and really liked it - but that was as a fixed camera indoors. When I took it out for roving shooting, I ended up putting it on auto a lot just because trying to fiddle about with the focus and exposure manually was awkward due to its size. So, it really depends what your priorities are.
So, JVC still could not get image stabilization right. Starting from the GZ-HD7, then GY-HM100, then GY-HM150, and now this one - the OIS is still subpar. I wanted to ask whether the handle/XLR can be purchased separately and whether it can be used with the HM170, but what's the point, the camera is just not good enough. The X70 is clearly a better camera, albeit it cannot do 4K.
TubeShooterMag Well, even better. Although Sony cannot part with its practice of charging for things that should be free. They used to offer "world cam" upgrade for region-locked cameras for a fee, now they charge for 4K upgrade - one may think they intentionally held this feature back only to be able to charge for it later. "Here is the car with one wheel missing, the fourth wheel costs extra".
Neither of them are more or less suited to interviews than the other. What will matter is the physical context eg the AX53 is smaller and more automatic in operation.
Other than open the iris as far as possible - but not beyond f2.0 else the image on this camcorder does go soft - no. This is simply an inevitability of a budget camcorder in a dim environment - camcorders need lots of light to function. Even expensive broadcast ones like light (which is why TV studios are absolutely littered with floodlights overhead)
Hmm, interesting comparison. I couldn't tell you, really, having never put the two against each other. The JVC has a bigger sensor but many more pixels. And "significantly" will mean different things to different people. I think your best bet is just to cast around on TH-cam for samples of each and decide of it looks good enough for your specific needs. With apologies, I can't remember about the zoom - I *think* it does (but don't quote me on that). Best thing would be to check the manual which is online at JVC's website as I recall.
Hi is there a clear winner between this and the Sony FDR AX100 ? The biggest dfference seems to be the sensor size (Sony having the bigger @ 1inch). Also did you test the slow mo function on this ? - Mant thanks.
They're very different beasts. The main difference is ergonomics; the AX100 is an awkward little sod that I didn't like at all (see my CX900 review which is exactly the same but HD). I think your decision will depend more on how you're going to use the camera. I did not test the slowmo.
no. i'm watching any video i found on the internet of the hm170/200 and at some iris/focus/nd settings there must be a problem... first i was thinking it's the lens all in all. but not all videos hav this soft edges- even in this video here there are scenes fully sharp and scenes like 5:54 ..... furthermore ther is a video up on youtube showing very hard problems with the camera in filming blue LED light. Till that video i am not sure to buy it. especcialy because im doing eventfilming ;-) there is nearly no event without blue LED light...
Because each time you press record, it starts a new clip. Otherwise you could end up with a single file the size of your memory card, maybe 32, 64 GB!! There are some camcorders where you can specifically select an option to concatenate all the files into one but it's a fairly rare feature.
TubeShooterMag We have a 128GB card and want to film a wedding, therefore we have the space and need only one video file. Does that mean that this camera does not have this feature? Or is there the opportunity to change this setting?
On this specific camera, I can't recall if it has the feature, you would need to read the manual. If it does not then you can simply assemble the clips in chronological order on your edit timeline and work from there.
+christopher dwyer Whilst I am not sure about the power supply (certainly the mains cable would be different), I believe the camcorder is switchable to either 24/25/30/50/60 framerates in the menus (except, oddly, according to the manual if you are shooting in standard def!!). I'm not 100% certain of this so check with the dealer.
+TubeShooterMag Thanks so much for the reply, you're very nice! I bought a PAL version in the end for UK warranty reasons, but have just one more question, if you don't mind! The shop suggested these cards for 4k shooting, which are insufficient according to your review: www.proav.co.uk/sandisk-64gb-extreme-uhsi-speed-class-3-sdhc-memory-card and I have also seen these on ebay, which are 150 MB/s, as you suggest in the review, but aren't UHS-III: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lexar-128GB-Lexar-Professional-1000x-SD-SDXC-Memory-Card-UHS-II-U3-150MB-s/221971387974?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D34996%26meid%3D2964fec4d64f489ab8db1ace4a92d04b%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D262016830978 They seem too cheap, given their size. What are your thoughts? Thank you for being so helpful. I'd be really stuck if I bought the wrong ones! Chris
The Sandisk cards will be fine (and you can get them cheaper than at Proav). They're UHS-3, superfast. I think you're confusing MegaBytes per second (MB as written on the cards) with Megabits per second (Mb as used in camcorder encoding data rates. The latter is one eighth of the former (or for easy calculation, round it to a tenth)
Oh, and my thoughts on any cheap cards off eBay is beware of fakes. I haven't clicked your link so I'm not implying anything about those specific ones or that seller but just generally, be wary.

Nice, thanks for the review, I was just looking for a review of this camcorder. I hope to grab one for a review as well and somehow get to compare it to the PXW-X70, it's main competitor! Low light doesn't seem as good (as the X70) from your test shots and the softness wide open is really bad and noticeable! Thanks again.
The X70 kills the JVC in low light (you've seen our review of the X70 I hope?). JVC wins on ergonomics. And for 4K, the Sony costs extra and only does 60Mbps.
Budget? Indoor or outdoor? Fast paced action or chess games? Your expertise level with a camcorder? Intended audience? You need to be more specific, there's never one single "best" for anything, it depends on your requirements.
I decided to skip out on 4k for now and went with the Sony NX100 instead f this one. Hopefully I made the right choice. The NX100 comes this week as my first pro level cam.
Hey Tubeshooter... which consumer camcorders have better image stabilization? I'd definitely make a tradeoff because I'm kind of a jumpy guy anyway, I drink a lot of coffee, and I shoot in a lot of jostle-y environments so IS to me is a godsend...
Without a shadow of a doubt, the best are the Sony ones featuring "Balanced Optical Image Stabilisation" aka BOSS. It's fantastic - the whole lens and sensor hang in a gimbal type arrangement.
Yep. I second that. This year, my brother helped me shoot some footage with a Sony X70, working on HD-setting. I was there all the time, but the shots where he walked backwards alongside a car I should enter, involved a 12 centimeter high step. When I saw the footage, I could almost swear it was steadycam-footage. It was SOOO stable.Could be that it's different on 4K (I can understand that part of the sensor is used in HD-setting to eliminate movement, something you can't do when using the full amount of pixels from the sensor) This was a helpful review. I now know this camera would probably annoy me to great heights ;)
Interestingly, the X70 doesn't have the BOSS system so that shot would have been even smoother on something like an AX53 but it's a consumer-grade cam without all the manual controls of the X70. BOSS is only found on the consumer cams because it's quite a bulky system to put into camcorders with larger sensors and lens arrangements, I believe.
Wow! Can you imagine how much smoother it will look like with the BOSS system ;) I really thought the X70 had that system as my sister uses it a lot at the local broadcast facility and knows those things almost inside out.
We're having major issues with the audio. It's a new camera but it doesn't pick up audio anywhere near good. The bars keep giving decent readings, but playback proves it's bearly hear-able
Maybe worth checking with your dealer? Possibly a duff unit. On the other hand, if the meters are good but it's still quiet, maybe a playback issue rather than a camera issue.
+Andrew Lomenzo I mean, the XA10 costs a bit more than the HM170 but doesn't shoot 4k, has a lesser zoom, and has poor manual controls. The one thing you get with the XA10 is XLRs. However, the HM200 is more fairly compared to the XA25 which goes for $2500.
That’s a bit unfair to claim. It is 4K sensor, and recording. Many people would use such a camcorder “as is” without an external recorder because that’s usually the point of this type of camcorder.
Wow, at that price and with the add-ons, it's got to be worth a look despite its shortcomings.
Can you attach a fisheye lens to it
I want one. It looks ideal for event videography and even ENG / documentary-style work.
It's really not. It's a very old model now and wasn't great, other than ergonomically, even back then.
please haw to open stapilizer on JVC GY-HM170 / GY-HM200 4K camcorder????????

I just subscribed, not sure why i waited so long, your reviews rock....ROCK!!!!
GY-HM200 doesnt play sound on the video files after i take them home.. i had micorphone on both my camcorders ny suggestions ?
Hard to guess without seeing it and more information. Were the level meters flickering when you recorded? Did you hear the sound in your headphones as you were recording? Etc
can this camera go on the dji ronin/ronin m?
How's the rack focus? Can you play with depth of field at all?
Only on a long zoom but even then tricky because of the lens closing down as you zoom. So, in a nutshell, not much.

EluraUser Of course modern car manufacturers already often charge for a spare wheel!
AX53 or JVC 170 for Interview ?
Neither of them are more or less suited to interviews than the other. What will matter is the physical context eg the AX53 is smaller and more automatic in operation.
When I shoot inside with 1080p it is extremely dark and the picture quality is extremely soft. Any idea how to fix this?
Other than open the iris as far as possible - but not beyond f2.0 else the image on this camcorder does go soft - no. This is simply an inevitability of a budget camcorder in a dim environment - camcorders need lots of light to function. Will this be significantly better in low light compared to the Canon HF G30? Also can will the 24x dynamic zoom work in 4k?
Hmm, interesting comparison. I couldn't tell you, really, having never put the two against each other. The JVC has a bigger sensor but many more pixels. And "significantly" will mean different things to different people. I think your best bet is just to cast around on TH-cam for samples of each and decide of it looks good enough for your specific needs.
With apologies, I can't remember about the zoom - I *think* it does (but don't quote me on that). Best thing would be to check the manual which is online at JVC's website as I recall.
Good video. Kindly what's the difference between JVC GY HM200 & JVCGY HM250 ?
Some extra stuff to play with for live-streaming (built-in graphic overlays and titling functions) that's about it as far as I know...

@@TubeShooterMag The 200 does have the 'Clip Continous' function as JVC calls the way you used to shoot as with tape.
very helpful and honest! Decided to buy on ebay the 200 model

This was very helpful, thank you!
For everyone: there's now a histogram on the 200 with the latest firmware (no idea about the 170).

Hi. Would the US version of this camera work in the UK? In terms of power supply and PAL?
+christopher dwyer Whilst I am not sure about the power supply (certainly the mains cable would be different), I believe the camcorder is switchable to either 24/25/30/50/60 framerates in the menus (except, oddly, according to the manual if you are shooting in standard def!!).

Dollars.. And I will have times where I will use a tripod and times where I hold it in hand
Con una blackmagic cual sería la mejor?
A Blackmagic what?
How much? Now
Good review and as informative and concise as always.
Thank you!
I decided to skip out on 4k for now and went with the Sony NX100 instead f this one. Hopefully I made the right choice. The NX100 comes this week as my first pro level cam.
+John Lockwood The NX100 is an excellent introductory pro level cam. I think it's a better option for you than the JVC. Have fun!
+TubeShooterMag Thanks mate.
It was SOOO stable.Could be that it's different on 4K (I can understand that part of the sensor is used in HD-setting to eliminate movement, something you can't do when using the full amount of pixels from the sensor)
This was a helpful review.
On the other hand, if the meters are good but it's still quiet, maybe a playback issue rather than a camera issue.
ay por que no hay subtitulos en español :(
Claro que hay. TH-cam lo ofrece automáticamente. Solo activa subtitulos y luego en propiedades seleccciona traduccion automática.
SD card slot machine with me tonight 😁
I’m cooling off .. too many issues ... ‘it’s a no for me ‘. I was hoping to get much much better.. this is over 2 grand in Australia
It's quite an old camcorder too, there must be better, more modern ones by now.
Is this just a glorified Canon XA-10? Sincerely asking.
Hmm, not sure how to answer that. In what sense? I mean, it has extra buttons and controls but so do all the pro handhelds.
Very Good Job, and good video You Rock Man
Thanks
how i set up the safety zone on the lcd tv safety zone
+Harry Rivera Best if you read the manual, it's not something I'm going to write instructions for when it's already documented.
Very niice, i loved it a lot, 10 stars out of 6
la JVC GY HM 200 no tiene salida por sdi en 4K solo exporta señal 1080, muy mala elección al comprarla.. realmente no es 4K
That’s a bit unfair to claim. It is 4K sensor, and recording. Many people would use such a camcorder “as is” without an external recorder because that’s usually the point of this type of camcorder.
Bien expliquer un abonne de plus💯
Thank you
FW update to enable pairing with FB profile is here: support.jvc.com/pro/firmwareupgrade/versionentry.jsp?modelId=87
La pero cámara que me he comprado, estoy súper rrepentido
Yes, it's not great ☹️
@@TubeShooterMag never buy a jvc again

Just Buy a Panasonic G7
The G7 is an entirely different beast with a different user in mind. This is very much a run-n-gun news/events/doco cam with ergonomics to suit.
Is video quality better for Indoor shoot or better than G7, G7 had major downside the 4GB limit for video per file
I've never tested a G7 so I can't tell you. The JVC is not a great camcorder though, I was merely pointing out the two are not really comparable.
So Should I Buy this JVC Cam or Sony FDR-AX100
It depends what you want to do, what your budget is, what your experience is, and what you like!
EN ESPAÑOL GRACIAS.
