Shooting with the JVC GY-HM200: 4K handheld camcorder

  • I have to admit, I have been a 4K sceptic until now. HD is well and truly suitable for the client work I produce. I've wondered if 4K is worth the hassle. Having used the Gy-HM200 I now see where 4K fits in. My channels of distribution will remain HD - however, to shoot 4K and be able to zoom in on the image is something that will revolutionise the abilities of the single camera operator who also edits. The ability to reframe shots matters. What also matters is that the 4K with the GY-HM200 is effectively 4K made easy. The camera records the 4K images at 150mbps and when bringing this into Final Cut Pro X for editing, the workflow is seamless. No hiccups or difficulties, simply shoot 4K, import this is into your editing system and get to work right away. I mention Final Cut Pro X, as this is the system I use. I havent tested footage from the GY-HM200 with any other editing systems.

    Thank you for this video and your other test video from Fiji. I have used the GY-HM150u and GY-HM650u in my professional life, but I've been looking at getting something of my own for freelance jobs. After seeing your reviews, I think JVC is going to win out again. At the current price point and future-proofing with a 4K rig (plus I'm already familiar with the settings, etc.) I think the GY-HM170u (the variant of the HM200) is going to be the right choice. I really appreciate your insight and testing. It's really helped me with my decision making process.

    Hey Rick! I want to say thanks for taking your time to make these videos. They have really been a great help for me in understanding this whole camcorder thing. I just recently bought the JVC-HM200 to shoot some training videos. I'm new to working these things. I can see that you are very skilled and also passionate about them, I was wondering if you didn't mind and was up for it, to make a tutorial guide to teach others how to work this camera? Perhaps it would be a great way to add more value to your market while bringing more traffic to your channel. Again, I want to say thank you and also encourage you to keep up with the great videos. They really do make a difference and help others. Let me know if you ever need any help and also, if you do decide to do that tutorial, let me know. Thanks. :)

    From the first moment listening to you - I saw you are a professional! Why? Every statement you make keeps in mind that you are "editing" your footage. All these dilettantes out there try to focus on the buttons and never explain, they just repeat what the JVC user manual says.
    You are also the first - without such intention - who taught me how to twist the "hood" sunshade into a correct horizontal position. I was afraid to break it with too much force. THANK YOU for this excellent shooting instruction. Noting negative to say about this camera - most negative I could say about the presenters. I love your tripod! Your camera positioning, your shots and your narrative - simple and great!

    I am particularly pleased with how this camera handles colour -- fantastic results all over (even with the 'smaller' fixed-lens version I'm using). Simply match it against DSLR footage, and the JVC GY-HM200's (and -HM170's) results will stand out by a mile!

    Great review. Based on the comments, sounds like some people who have been unhappy with this camcorder might have realized it's too much camera for them. I've been using a Canon XF200 and Panasonic Ac160a and would love to add this to my collection.

    Brilliant Stuff I find you incredibly energetic and inspiring I am a break out film maker who has been dabbling in the 4k market for a while and like you it's brilliant to have
    Your review is honest I know this and vouch for it after having use of the same camera for a short film and I found it lightweight comfortable easy I mean very easy to use
    One thing I really really enjoyed was it's comfortable smooth zoom and out of tripod use
    I (don't try this at home kids) actually rigged it to a pole and used it for drone effects and I was grateful it was light and the results were if I may spectacular I was impressed (KIDS REALLY DONT TRY IT I WAS EXPERIMENTING)
    Why do some feel the need to hear reviews with critical points it's mainly due to the flooding of poor online reviews
    I judge a review firstly on the quality of the presenter knowledge etc passion and expression then in the product I like the fact you just like it
    Brilliant Stuff 😊

    Excellent review. Great images. Thank you for your time and effort to produce this. I have been a 100% Canon fanboy from the moment I laid my hands on the XHA1 and then later added the 5DM2 and upwards from there. I have had a Canon XA20 and recently rented a XF400 and while the latter is an amazing camera, the weight of it is significantly heavier than I would have liked by about 20-30%. Also, there isn't the 4K options that this JVC HM200 has and no SDI out or 4.2.2 unless I upgrade the bankroll. Have you had experience with the XF400 and if so your comparative thoughts? If you haven't, any thoughts to add on my considering the JVC HM200 coming from a Canon environment? Also, I love that music. What is the name of the song and where did you acquire? Thanks again and looking forward to your response. Dr D

    How does it cut with the bigger JVC LS300 while shooting J-Log? Have you found a receipt for making the HM170-HM200 shoot something similar to J-Log by black stretch, knee and color matrix settings? I am liking the JVC LS300 and looking for some B cameras.

    Great review, can anyone please explain the audio settings, I'm having so much trouble with it over auto condensing, on manual or standard setting, through shotgun or onboard mics, it records very bad audio by default. Is there a magic button, or maybe any old shot gun mic will not do and you have to get another type? Also with this camera on default the lcd was set darker than what it records, so you assume it's right and the recorded vision ends up overbright, so LCD needs to be made darker to force you to bring the brightness down in your recording.

    Massive thanks for this: I've been umming and ahing about a b-cam for the office DSLR that's around £2k. It's between this, Sony's X70 and Panasonic's X1000.
    With Sony's £600 4k upgrade and poor codec and Panny's very average image filled with rolling shutter this is winning.

    HELP! We have only owned this camera for a few days but I can not for life of me get both of our wireless mics to work. We have two wireless mics that go from the receiver right into the XLR connects. My meters on the LCD show I hear both mics, but once I pull the video off my chip, I can only hear one mic? Even the audio monitoring hears them both. I have spent HOURS on this and all I can find is reviews on this camera, no actual "how to setup and use" information. The manual says basically nothing helpful. I will have to return this entire setup if I cannot get it to work. Any help?

    Mind me if I ask you, what lens filters do you use or recommend with this camera (if any)?

    Please tell me what I might be doing wrong here. I have the HM170 and I can't seem to get rid of the grain (and it's not artful grain). I'm having real buyer's remorse (even though it wasn't my money). I'm really wishing I would have opted for a DSLR. Even my near entry level DSLR gets sharper moving images. Please advise. Thanks.

    • @atozvisual
      @atozvisual 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might need to set AWB/9 (pressing the button will reset the white balance, be sure to have something white in the screen), The ND Filter can also make it grainy. When I began filming with this camera by default it filmed bright, setting ND Filter to 1/4 works great for shaded stuff. For dark scenes go ND Filter off, you'd need to set the camera to 30p or 25p/24p depending if you need NTSC or PAL or cinema. I've had issues with the XLR, the camera seems to be governing the input audio, condensing, I've set the XLR buttons to Manual and both dials to 10. Sorry not a pro, just trying to offer something I have not been able to get help with.

    settings or anything to remedy this? (lamps is not an option).

    • @CinesimMedia
      @CinesimMedia 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it would depend on the location. If there are any natural light sources like the moon or maybe even a nearby street lamp (I know you said no lamps). The only setting you can do is turn up the ISO and bring your F-Stop to it's lowest setting. The more you zoom in - the higher the F-Stops, so you might want to limit or not zoom at all. Then you can go into an editor and do some post processing to bring out the scene - but if there are very dark areas with no information - you wont be able to do too much with out making to footage grainy and full of artifacts. Where is this being filmed? Why no lamps?

    (Now the HM250) I've had this for five days and did a test shoot at a dark but wild colour lit stage. I sat the JVC side-by-side with my long-time £400 LumixG7, with both cameras on 6k white balance.
    The LCD is a absolute disaster. With a mic plugged in, I talked myself through what settings I was changing and described how it looked on LCD. Playing it back on PC; by the time I thought I'd got it right on-scene, it was a super-saturated stain on a black screen. YOU CAN NOT set your colour/brightness on the scene, IT IS NOT TRUE TO THE FOOTAGE.
    It doesn't even have a balance spirit-level or touch-screen to pick your focus target, you can just choose Left/Centre/Right. If you sacrifice all your manual tweaking and just go for the full-auto method, you get auto facial detection. Whoopie doo.
    Oh, and if you want to turn the mic volume dials, you need tweezers. Returning tomorrow and going for a GH5

      in that case, try to look for a Panasonic one, which is not very professional, but may suit with the 4K to HD conversion while doing image stabilization and can also track by pre-definied position over the 4K image, means it creates video movements which you didnt do, but can program to be done with the 4K to HD downsizing

    Horrid camera, all around. I returned mine 5 minutes after unboxing it. Joystick was defective (would stick in the up-position and scroll uncontrollably. It would also stick if you used it to point to the right). Software was wrong too, it would allow 60i, 60p, 50i, 50p, 30p and 25p... no 24p!!!!! ALL the buttons are flimsy, cheaply made, giving the impression they would fall-off if you are not careful, specially the little rocker under the lens (meant for iris control). No way this camera can be used at night or in low light situations, regardless of format 4K/HD. NO WAY. Setting a custom white balance is still a mystery for me with this cam, you can select easily from the presets, but try to set the custom one... what the hell JVC? As I said, very disappointed.
    Thank God I ordered from a very good supplier who allowed me to return it.
    And thank you MM for posting your opinion and sharing your experience with camera. I hope my comments help inform others as well. This cam may work for some, but not for me.

      Angel Janer It's shame you didn't give the camera more than 5 minutes. You can set the color temperature values between 2300K to 15000K (in 100K increments) Page 62 of the manual (free download) clearly shows Setting Values: 7500K, 6500K, 5600K, 5200K, 4800K, 4200K, 3200K. 3000K, 2800K. Furthermore, the camera records 30P, 25P, 24P (in 4K) - and also 60P and 50P in HD. Then there are the interlaced frame rates. This camera certainly isn't lacking in terms of frame rates. I'm impressed with the build quality of the camera. It doesn't feel cheap to me. The rocker under the lens you referred to - the iris wheel - this is a solid ring that certainly does not feel cheap. This can be customised. I've set the small wheel to shutter control and iris is controlled manually via a large ring at the back of the lens - just like on high-end cameras. On the lens I have separate rings for iris and focus, the wheel below, as mentioned, is for shutter. I find this to be a very convenient way to access the controls. I don't really think you gave the camera a thorough run-through - certainly no in the 5 minutes you spent with it!

    • @cinergiacreativa
      @cinergiacreativa 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The camera you received is very different from the one I got. Time will tell how consistent the production of this camera is. I know what the camera frame rates are supposed to be from the cams literature and reviews like yours (very complete and good by the way). But for some reason the one I got wasn't what it was supposed to be. I had the highest regard for JVC and for that reason was very disappointed. I really wanted this to be my next camcorder.

    You forgot to mention the Terrible PC software you have to use to get files off this camera.. It only saves in its .MTS and only very slowly converts to the obsolete WMV format. What a waste of a nice camera. This software is really bad, with no options to do anything. No Mpeg.. No AVI.. nothing

      green323turbo I have found the integration with Mac to absolutely seamless! One of the easiest workflows I have encountered. The camera has different recording options: MPEG-4, AVC/H.264. I don't see why there would any issue working with these formats on a PC. Obviously you need decent editing software. With this camera I have found the workflow from camera to computer to be very straight-forward and trouble-free and very easy.

      the camera will be recongized as an hard-disk when connecting to a computer, no extra software needed to get your data

      green323turbo Even in MTS your editing softwate would recognize it. You need to update your software and computer
