by far one of the best marshalls and you don't have every kid on the block trying to get one like the jcm's or the silver jub's that's the best part imo :)
I played one of these suckers today as well as an SLP and a 1959RR and it's brother the 2466. The Vintage Modern blew the Plexis out of the water. I'm in love with these amps
@Mikeoo21 The Vintage Modern is not a two channel amp, it is a single channel amp with two dynamic ranges. It is meant to be played using your guitar volume control (old School) to dial in the tones. In the right hands the best sounding Marshall today.
It could be the tubes, but also his settings and mic and mic placement have a huge effect on the tone.... I've played this amp, and even at the low volumes at Guitar Center, i still loved it! Its not too harsh if you keep the presence and High Preamp Volume at reasonable levels... Excellent amp if you can tweak it just right
It's so cool that tube manufacturers have caught up with the demand for vacuum tubes in the guitar amp market. Just the fact that this amp is based around the KT-66, not to mention the fact that you can get a handful of different variations on this classic tube, is awesome for us!!!
Great demo. Showed a lot of different tones and settings most other vids don't. I'm buying one this week, and this vid helped make my decision. Thanks!!!!!
the clean demo for me at 2 mins sold it for me, that is one of the nicest sounds for me personally you can get, then further on in the vid my mind was just destroyed at the perfect crunch oh my yes pay day please
@MrLordshanks Marshall have always been rock machines. Andy is mainly playing classic 70's tunes to show this as well. You are right, Zep and Marshall go hand in hand. Thanks for watching! -PGS
@MrLordshanks I've gotten a vintage modern head to do a pretty good late 80's, early 90's type death metal tone, so it doesn't really stop at early hard rock such at Led Zeppelin. :) (And no, I'm not talking a scooped mids, no-balls crappy death metal tone, I'm talking boosted mids, classical roar, tear your face off Marshall death metal tone.)
It's suppose to work more like a classic single channel Marshall amp. Basically means you crank it up, then back down the volume on the guitar to get a clean sound...
A really nice AC/DC rhythm tone at around 3:10. Sounds like that amp can pretty much handle anything except full-on thrash or death metal. I guess you could boost the signal with a good distortion box if you want those kind of tones.
He never played a plexi...maybe in the early days of Guns N' Roses. He recorded Appetite for Destruction with a modded JCM800 (rented from S.I.R. Studios). From the late '80s he's been playing Marshall Silver Jubilee heads along with his signature Marshall amp (which is the reissue of the Silver Jubilee). Nowadays he's also using a Vintage Modern for tonal differences. I saw Doug Aldrich with Whitesnake. He is using Vintage Modern heads. He has a HUGE sound!
I own one of these and love it except one thing...it desperately needs a dedicated volume control for the second channel. The difference in volume from overdriven to clean will make you jump and then scramble for the volume control on your guitar. That said the tone is awesome and very modifiable. It was between this and the plexi 1987x and this just had more to offer IMHO.
Didn't you watch the video?? There are 3 ways to affect the gain: using the dynamic range switch to go between low range (vintage) and high range (more gain), and using the Detail and Body knobs to change the level of gain on your highs and lows respectively.
Actually, flash image was started in movie theaters. The difference here is that the Marshall image is clearly visible when it is flashed on the screen. Flash subliminal messages are only subconsciously noticed. A movie theater may flash a Coca Cola image on the screen. We would not consciously say "hey, did you see that Coke logo," but your mind would make you thirsty.
great to hear sultans at the begining. It kinda spooked me out since i was thinking how this would sound with Mark Knopfler stuff and he started playing abit of sultans
Nice demo, I like that Snakecharmer bit at the end. Evil Empire- my fav album from Rage. People that say you are playing anything "wrong" just dont get it.
Great demo! I had no interest in the Vintage Modern until I saw this vid, I play a JCM900 SL-X and this amp seems similar with the Detail and Body controls the SL-X has Gain and Gain Sensitivity but the different tubes gives a different tone. Would love to see you do a demo of an SL-X, just see how good you could make it sound :)
***HELP*** Is there anyway to get a more even volume between the low and the high? It's either too quiet on the low if I set the high volume 1st, or too loud (on the high) if I set the low volume 1st. any suggestions would be GREATLY appriciated!! Thanks!!!
@murfdog19 lol , but a 100 watt doesn't sound double louder than a 50 watt as many of you believe. a 100 watt amp is only 3 db louder than a 50. greets!:D
could I have all the settings for that fat high gain tone with the tele at the end please. preamp was all the way the mids backed off, what about the presence and the rest. Thanks
Slash recored appetite with a modded 1959 Super Tremelo rented from SIR. #39 amp. George Lynch also used it in Dokken. On stage live he runs stereo VM and his Silver Jubilee (slash sig)..
Finally marshall makes an amp that actually sounds like a marshall!!! I dig a lot of those tones!!
by far one of the best marshalls
and you don't have every kid on the block trying to get one like the jcm's or the silver jub's
that's the best part imo :)
I absolutely love the vintage moderns and class 5's!they are just as great as any old plexi
I played one of these suckers today as well as an SLP and a 1959RR and it's brother the 2466. The Vintage Modern blew the Plexis out of the water. I'm in love with these amps
Man, I wanna get a Fender Bassman for cleans, the VM for crunch, and a Soldano SLO for high gain and leads. That would be a killer set-up!!!
my favorite marshall head. and i am usually in heavy rock and metal, but this amp just has something else that i really like. someday i will take one.
I'm a humbucker guy, but I absolutely love that tele tone!!
@Mikeoo21 The Vintage Modern is not a two channel amp, it is a single channel amp with two dynamic ranges. It is meant to be played using your guitar volume control (old School) to dial in the tones. In the right hands the best sounding Marshall today.
Great head! KT66s are the best tubes I've ever tried! A great step ahead from Marshall.
so is this essentially like having a Plexi and JCM 800 in the same amp?
Absolutely works for metal. If you put it through a THD hotplate or boost with a screamer you will have a seriously hairy monster.
I've been wearing ear plugs on the high wattage amps! It helps that I'm on the side of the amp, not sitting in front too.
It could be the tubes, but also his settings and mic and mic placement have a huge effect on the tone.... I've played this amp, and even at the low volumes at Guitar Center, i still loved it! Its not too harsh if you keep the presence and High Preamp Volume at reasonable levels... Excellent amp if you can tweak it just right
Finally a video that shows how versatile this amp really is! Thanks for posting!
One of the best clean tone i ever heard
this beats every marshall ive tried so far...i think i know what my next amp is...this things sings AND screams...
Wow, sounds great! A lot better than what I had expected.
It's so cool that tube manufacturers have caught up with the demand for vacuum tubes in the guitar amp market. Just the fact that this amp is based around the KT-66, not to mention the fact that you can get a handful of different variations on this classic tube, is awesome for us!!!

the clean demo for me at 2 mins sold it for me, that is one of the nicest sounds for me personally you can get, then further on in the vid my mind was just destroyed at the perfect crunch oh my yes pay day please
this amp gives you pure valve tone of any marshall amp ever made
@MrLordshanks Marshall have always been rock machines. Andy is mainly playing classic 70's tunes to show this as well. You are right, Zep and Marshall go hand in hand. Thanks for watching!
-PGS
It's not discontinued. It just comes in black tolex now and some stores won't have it in stock.
I have this amp... it's freakin awesome.... and purple !
i reckon the body knob is brilliant, you can use it to get millions of tones, it doesnt just add flub it completely changes the tone.
I bought one of these a few months back and it has a nice fizzy almost fuzz tone ot it which isn't very noticable on most videos. Very cool amp.
what a great amp!!!.. I've had my 2466 for around a month... best amp I've ever owned.. ..btw..who wants to buy a kerry king JCM? :D
It seems a little shrill like a JCM 900 until he hits that mid boost. After that it sounds perfect.
My fave Marshall amp since the 800 series!
yes, if you use moderate preamp volume, switch to the low DR ang roll back your guitars volume
this guy has the best job in the world
Holy shit that's a HUGE sound, unchained at the beginning was sick!
Currently Slash is using that head for his VR work. It should also give good enough distortion and tone for the older GnR songs too. :)
KT66 tubes are just amazing
Good observation. I don't think I would have noticed it. Maybe I saw something like this back in 1984, when I bought my JCM 800 half stack!!
It's suppose to work more like a classic single channel Marshall amp. Basically means you crank it up, then back down the volume on the guitar to get a clean sound...
DEFINETLY right cabinet for the opening song.
love how sultans is being played, your the man!
whats he playing at 3:47 ?
A really nice AC/DC rhythm tone at around 3:10. Sounds like that amp can pretty much handle anything except full-on thrash or death metal. I guess you could boost the signal with a good distortion box if you want those kind of tones.
wow playing snakecharmer brought back some memories! awesome!!
Loving the balls to the wall rock sound you're getting around 8:25. More impressive coming from a Telecaster!
Nice amp, and great taste of music, love the dire straits
He never played a plexi...maybe in the early days of Guns N' Roses. He recorded Appetite for Destruction with a modded JCM800 (rented from S.I.R. Studios). Yes, it's a digital emulation of a plate reverb.
what a great sounding and versatile amp.
thanks for an awesome review
Awesome brown sound on that intro riff!
Again a nice amp demo!!! My friend has this one with the original cab
(425A or something ;-)) But I preher this cab, lovely those' greenies!!
It's even more amazing that he can get it on a Les Paul and not a Stratocaster.
1:39 sick clean tone thats awesome
my DREAM amp
I like the way you aproach "sultans of swing" !!!!!!!!
Unchained! Nothing Stays The Same!!!
Thanks for the review..I`m thinking of getting one..I play teles..Your review made easier to decide towards buying one.

Mine doesn't take pedals too well. But, you really don't need pedals. You can dial in all sorts of tones with this amp.
I have the 2266C.
Just awesome!
If these puppies would cost less than $500 then all those dirt pedal makers would run out of business. :)
great to hear sultans at the begining. It kinda spooked me out since i was thinking how this would sound with Mark Knopfler stuff and he started playing abit of sultans
can't believe this amp(my DREAM amp) is being discontinued :(
funny, I listened to the video without watching the visuals and still I felt I wanted to buy a Marshall when the video ended...
hey wats the difference with the 2266 and the 2466?
that amp sounds so cool man
i got the compo..it's amazing! truly inspiring
yes, the 140 what is just means u can play anything up to 100 what on it.
A very versatile amp.......... great playing!
That sounds so god damn ORGASMIC;; i just LOVE the way Les Paul go with Marshall
Yes, it is!
@Macsk8ing Good idea. You have finally saw the light!
Nice demo, I like that Snakecharmer bit at the end. Evil Empire- my fav album from Rage. People that say you are playing anything "wrong" just dont get it.
Now if they did this in a lower watt format.....
the irnoic thing is that song was played on a fender through a fender, and yet andy got a perfect tone with a gibson through a marshall :P
it depends because this amp is not as high in gain like a JVM cause when i play this amp in my room its totally different
Wow this sounds Amazing!
Unchaineddd...
Awesome!
@zeppelinlive1960 Robin Trower uses a Vintage Modern. He's been around awhile. :-)
What is the difference between v30's and greenbacks? and blackshadows? assuming they are all in a closed back cab?
UNCHAINED!!!!!
get a few pedals and you should have any tone you want, perferably a dime distort and a grunge metal pedal thats what i have and it kicks ass.
Great demo Andy i just ordered one with a 1960a 4x12.
The last riff at 7:50 is Hyper Music by Muse.
you need a cabinet if it is just the amp head or if it is the combo you dont because a speaker is built in with it
***HELP*** Is there anyway to get a more even volume between the low and the high? It's either too quiet on the low if I set the high volume 1st, or too loud (on the high) if I set the low volume 1st. any suggestions would be GREATLY appriciated!! Thanks!!!
Better off saying he played everything. He used a lot of amps and guitars in studio. He recorded like the entire 4th album with a Telecaster.
@murfdog19 lol , but a 100 watt doesn't sound double louder than a 50 watt as many of you believe. a 100 watt amp is only 3 db louder than a 50. greets!:D
If I'm not mistaken, it actually has Celestion Greenbacks...
Great review.
Sultans of Swing
could I have all the settings for that fat high gain tone with the tele at the end please.
preamp was all the way the mids backed off, what about the presence and the rest.
Thanks
VM #FTW
Slash recored appetite with a modded 1959 Super Tremelo rented from SIR. #39 amp. George Lynch also used it in Dokken. On stage live he runs stereo VM and his Silver Jubilee (slash sig)..
@ProGuitarShopDemos that corny "ratt" hook sounds so much better played on one of these rather than the solid state amp it was recorded on.
awesome review
i find this tone a bit harsh. maybe its because its pre-amp gain, as 50 watts of power amp distortion would be difficult to capture on a youtube demo
6:54 Are You Experienced by Jimi. Excellent.
what are the speakers on that cab?
would that head be better with de vntage modern cab or the 1960A?
This seems like the type of amp that you start noodling with at 6pm and the next thing you know it's 3am...
