I love the low end response from mine. This is the first amp I've owned with that kind of low end on tap. Just great time overall.
Tone not time haha
Immediate reaction when I got mine was how incredible the low end was compared to other Marshalls I’ve played.
Own the Deep Purple (tolex) VM combo. From what I've read, the designer of the amp stated that the VM was based off of the JTM45/Bluesbreaker amp, but with a few tweaks. I'm guessing that the Vintage is the JTM45 based side and the Modern is the tweak. I find that the Vintage is great platform for (into the front end) pedals.
Once a sleeper amp, but is now becoming rare...I read they were only made for two years..., with a roster of users (past or present) being Trower, Gilbert, Slash, Yngwie, and Jeff Beck...which I'm sure also helped in the prices jumping since buying mine..., I'm sure the VM is going to become a collector's amp and a classic.
Not ever parting with mine as it covers a lot of sonic realestate. Took me five minutes to figure out the preamp controls, after realizing they work like jumpered/slaved amps, and being that I use my guitars' volume and tone controls, it's basically set it and forget it/dial it in and go.
An awesome amp that still gets a bit of diss, but bet that if someone like John Mayer, or whoever is popular now, was seen using one, the opinions would change.
I bought mine because I love the sound of it. That is all I'm really concerned with.
This is the best video I've found that shows what this amp can do. Once you get your head around the concept, the VM truly comes alive.
Stephen
Marshall states that the VM 2266 and VM 2466 are 50 and 100 watts respectively. Not true. They are 2266 @ 36 watts and 2466 @ 72 watts. The reason these wattages work well is due to the particular properties of the KT66 power tubes. I have two of the 2266 models (the head and combo) and I prefer the 36-watt output, as one can crank it more without as much overall volume.
I just bought this amp thanks to you sir.. Great video!! Thank you & Salam from Indonesia.. 🇮🇩
I have the purple one and love it. It's my main gigging Marshall.
You know your Marshalls, Leon. Thanks for posting.
I love mine . I just bought it two days ago used for a great price and I'm so in love.
love? fo ol
That's really an incredible tone! Sounds better than an old 800 to my ears. Plus effects loop. No brainer!
It's so underrated, great amp for the money
@@LeonTodd junk
I have the 50 watt head pushing a 1960A cab. Tone for days. A lot of people just didn't get what this amp is all about. I love the KT66 tubes.
Just ordered one of these with matching cab today, been watching your videos ever since! Thanks man!
Please keep me posted with how you like it!
I have the 2266 and it has been my favorite amp I've ever owned for a long time now. It is very pick responsive and can clean up with playing lighter or dialing back the guitar's volume.
i call bs
@@jobprojobpro3238 Haha, what?!
great video, awesome job at showing off what this amps is capable of.. I’ve parted ways with my 2466 in a deal awhile back, but will be returning to me shortly 🤘🏽
Bark @ The Moon @ 5:22 ... Awesome memories Leon Brah !!
Absolutely love that you played some quo! Big fat mumma!
Great demo. The controls do really respond well to Vintage Marshall “best practices.” This amp makes it on pretty much every recording I do. Inside is the tone of the gods. And it’s a blast to play with your volume knob doing the bulk of the work for cleanish vs dirty. Only thing I don’t like is that I use a delay frequently, and the effects loop being pre phase inverter means your delays are super distorted. Plus the effects loop does compromise the tone. If it was practical to run this in a wet/dry/wet rig I’d do so because this thing is just an amazing and way underrated amp.
Great demo of a great Marshall . The VM is on my search radar now . I'd like the purple please .
The best marshall in years!! The dsl are very great but this VM are really god, full of harmonic and power, with a boost from friedman its heaven for blues, rock and metal!! Cheers from Portugal great chanel and very great player to! Rock n roll mate
Glorious amps! Thanks for tuning in.
I have the 2266 head. I agree. Abraço!
What Friedman boost pedal?
Leon you're the goat. I think this might be my next amp.
I miss this amp!
Yeah, baby!! THAT is rock guitar!!
I'm not supprised you've got this amp at this point in time since this thing was made. I've seen the purple version for sale right now too! For a good price as well. Guys just aren't upto your level of knowledge and they give away awesome product after a few years of owning them cause they can't make them sound like their hero. Great buy! Well done! It's vintage cause of the speakers it came with from the factory. I've been thinking about this amp in the last week. New vintage. What a great thing!
Dreyn 77 it sounds awesome, I think you'd really like it.
You're right! I would, and if I was committed to it, by now i would have a complete purple half stack version. But, like you, I was learning about other things instead of what was brand new at the time these things came out. Now I remember what I was doing at the time. I had just bought the 1959RR amp, and it bankrupted me for a while and kicked my ass as I was playing music.
But now, you know what has happened? The pedal companies have made product which makes those old amps (JMP) still relevant. So, a JMP and a brand new $1200 signature pedal set is a very good rival for the vintage modern amp and a general purpose guitar and pedals.
So it means I still don't get a chance to buy a vintage modern setup. Which is perfect for a three piece band. I was seriously tempted by those Hendrix speakers with the vintage modern. Those things alone should have made this amp get built for the next ten years, but that didn't happen. It's a real shame! They only lasted in production for a short time.
Playing the vintage modern must be a very unique experience. You've got a whole new world to explore now! You're a lucky guy!
Dreyn 77 luckily they're quite cheap at the moment. Vintage Modern, future classic.
Yes the last 10 seconds sealed the deal
I love my vm2466 so versatile.i have 1970 super lead 100 and a jcm 800 87 model .and now there both for sale.i love them all.but the VM is my new horsey .I put them all together.its epic.with six cabs.thunder of the gods.
Definition of epic right there
Excellent playing! You're up there with Andy from PGS and Johan Segeborn on my list of demo dudes.
Underground Man thanks so much, that's esteemed company! I especially love Johan's vids
Yeah he's awesome. All three of you have your own focuses. I'd say Andy is more like a jack-of-all-trades but focuses on indie stuff and effects more, Johan is classic rock purity and you're more modern but play with nuance at every level of gain.
I'm considering getting one of these, but I'm kinda between this and a DSL50. Help? lol
That's a tough one. The DSL is more of an all around workhorse and the channel switching is handy if needed; you can get some convincing heavier tones from the DSL which is a little out of the range of the VM. However, if you want a "set and forget" modded Plexi style amp that lets you plug straight in and use your volume control for dynamics, the VM is hard to beat. They're both amazing. Get whichever one you can find cheaper :p
Ok thanks, that helps. This would be my first Marshall, so I want to do it right! And, thanks to Johan, I'm also considering the 1960AX cab. ;)
I'm rocking this and a dsl, two forgotten amps that people didn't fall in love with-that I was able to find some amazing tones on
Preston Babey they're two of my go to amps, absolutely stunning
Best Marshall amp EVER! Just a dream to play GNR in one like this
Perfect cab to use for it. Sounds great mate.
I have this amp. It is the best Marshall ever made... Nuff Sed!!!
If you like Plexi style tones it's a no brainer.
It's not my favorite but definitely in my top 5 for sure.
The VM is Marshall's masterpiece. Pity few people know how to use it.
NO,IT ISNT.ITS O.K BUT BEST EVER MADE?
The most loved amps are the Plexis, JCMs and Vox ACs. The VM is part Plexi and part JCM.
Man, this absolutely great stuff !
I got the 100 watt head with the matching 4x12 slant both in purple color. I got it in storage still with tags and Marshall covers..
Are you gonna sell?
Al Stasko nah. I’ve had it for so long it is now a family heirloom to pass down to my kids.
The best marshall sound, the bass!! 😋
Great AC/DC tone.
great demo man,i own a pair of them running in stereo,i do have a friedman be-od in front, best tone ever
Yum!
wow!!!! it sounds amazing!!!!
Christopher Davis under rated amp for sure.
You snuck in a little bit of sin city . J just bought this amp...glad to have some vids on it.
So bad ass, what else can you say.
I use this amp with 2 mxr gt od's and a zephyr fuzz and it sounds just amazing. Also of course without the pedals but those pedals just make it an amazing sounding setup
Really good demo of that amp, and solid playing to demo it properly. Thanks dude!
Hey Leon, thanks for the demo. Do you think I can achieve Slash sound with the VM?
It'll definitely get you in the ballpark with the right guitar and chops. Slash used one for a while from memory.
@@LeonTodd Thanks Leon! 🙏
Damn that tone is ridiculous. What cab are you using here? Is it the 2466 or the 2266?
Quality demo
Thanks so much! That's my Marshall 4x12 TV cab with greenbacks and a cascade fat head mic. 50 watt version, 2266.
Awesome man. Roughly how loud was this? (volume or master volume wise)?
...Only asking cause ive just set foot in the tube amp world with a DSL 100H & 4x12 cab myself, and curious about other amps with a master vol.
I had the master around 6 but the cab is in an iso room. It's pretty loud!
I know Mike from Opeth was using one of these for a bit and when I saw Paul Gilbert with Yellow Matter Custard he was playing the combo.
Jonathan Edwards it suits his style so well.
I have the 2266 with the 425A cabinet. Fantastic amp. The factory foot switch is a little odd , in my opinion. It toggles between HDR/HDR reverb/LDR /LDR reverb. I think it would have been more practical to toggle the boost on/off. Great video.
07blackdog that's strange. Luckily it works great as a set and forget single channel amp.
For me I found the Vintage Modern's output transformer sounded fuzzyer and not as rich as an early 80's Drake ot. Still enjoying the old 800 with a couple mods.
Paul Gilbert played these for a while; not 100% but I think he still might be running one or two in his backline w/ a Fractal AxeFX.
I got the oportunity to snag one NIB when a music store I frequented was going under...I've kinda been kicking myself on passing it up ever since.
IIRC he used the VM combo for a while? Didn't realise he was an Axe-Fx guy!
Leon Todd
I think so, these days anyways; its been a while since I looked at what Gilbert is using anymore.
Sorry, Paul never used a Axe FX in a studio or live situation. He has a Kemper for fiddeling around in his home Studio.
Her Used Vintage Modern Combos and Tops on Fuzz Universe and live with Mr Big and Solo. Allways boosted with different Pedals.
Today he uses the Marshall´s he can get from the Rentals Services. But he becomes a blues guy, the Shredding Time is over.. Love his GOOMY Record @@johnnykeller7648
Great playing, to be sure. Interestingly, I did not see him adjust the guitar vol/tone (except near the end) for tone, which "they" will tell you is what this amp was designed for. As he proved, it can give a plethora of tones simply using body, detail, Low and High Dynamic Range, pick and fingers. While it sounds great with many good guitars, I just bought a 2019 Les Paul Jr DC (buy one, folks), with a single P90, using tone and volume on that thing , with this amp's features- the tone options combining everything, are infinite and crushingly great...
Ive been thinking of unloading this amp for almost a year to get a Bogner Goldfinger but every time is see this video I keep of putting it off. This is a vey versatile single channel amp. But I guess for this amp to really shine you have to get the 425 cab that was designed specifically for this amp.
It's pretty great. I'm not sold on the whole "you need the cab designed for it" thing though, as pairing it with different speakers is a large part of the fun in creating fresh tones.
Ray Cuizon Get the Goldfinger SL. It is an incredible sounding and extremely versatile amp. The Vintage Modern sounded pretty good when I played one. But the Bogner is just in another class of greatness. Play one and you will see .
Sounds exactly as I remember from 10 years ago, somewhere between a JMP 2203, Silver Jubilee and JCM900...actually impressed by the amount of gain you get with that LP...hot ceramic Classic pickups?
By the sound I would say rather alnico V medium-high output humbuckers
Work best with the cab that's paired with it housing the Greenbacks special designed ones between celestion and marshall
Not a Marshall guy at all, but I love how this amp sounds.
It's one of the good ones. KT66's help there.
Not a Marshall guy....likes the sound of a Marshall that sounds like a Marshall.
I'm so proud to have one of these.
Bought it without trying it. Never regret.
Mine is purple. I only have to buy a very good and matchable cabinet.
Any opinions?
I love it with V30's for modern tones and with greenbacks for vintage tones.
Then my Friedman 4x12 cab with greenies and v30's will sound great!!
Agree, this amp never really got on my radar, but keeps sounding better the more I hear it. Great deals on these. Kt66 in the power section right??
you were right in the first instance
Effects loop prone to failure on early models- it's due to a faulty relay. Mine went mid gig rendering the amp silent .
Same with mine :( very frustrating.
Thank you for playing Bark at The Moon correctly.
Life is too short to play Bark at the Moon any other way.
If you love a Vintage Modern, the YJM100 will blow your mind!
Ooooh yes!
No doubt, the the Vintage Modern is maybe $1500 while the YJM is only 15 grand... rofl
Mark P 🤣 yea they're expensive. Too bad they didn't carry forward any of its amazing features
Killer tone and playing! I guess the key is getting the master past 12:00! My 2266 doesn't sound as good at lower volumes.
In my experience that's the trick. It's pretty loud at that volume though!
Got mine at a steal too....less than $600. I wouldn't let it go for anything right now. Guaranteed if I sold it, it would be one of those regrets that stick.
Bob Yarbray I'm in the same boat, it's a keeper.
so its basically a JCM + JMP? SOLD!
Exactly and for half the price
@@cliffords2315 lol not if you guys keep talking about em. right now all the VMs listed cost more than i paid for my 2203.
I was going to buy a jcm 900 or a jcm 2000 but now I dunno? This thing is badass! I found one for sale with a 4x12 loaded with marshall/celestion greenbacks for an insane deal! may have to cave!
Check out my DSL/VM comparison
Such piercing treble! I watched your "8 Marshall Amps Compared" video and to me this amp seems to combine the jankiness of a JTM with the compression and gain of a DSL100. Vintage Modern indeed.
was that a JCM2000 you used as a table 🤣? damn this head sounded good especially towards the end when you dialed in some more classic tone
Hi one for sale my area 500 euro...is it a bargain as most people are now buying small heads like vox
How much did you pay for it ,I just scored the same vintage modern 2266 50w with a JCM 900 1960a cab 300w 4×12" 75w for an absolute steel price of $300 for the lot
I agree with you on the sound ,it CRANKS
And you can play to budd
That's a crazy deal, good score! I just picked up the same rig myself, £425 for the head and £225 for the cab. Not quite the steal you got, but still a good deal. Hope you have fun with your amp mate. 🤘
@@Killadey
Yeah it cranks but most of all it plays my acoustic the best
Is makes is a whole new ball game when the acoustic guitar is plugged in especially with a delay pedal running threw the loop.
But the Gibson studio screams threw it so mean to
This amp has such a wide range that you can do with is from heavy metal to grunge pealjam ,/soundgarden rage against the machine, to rock n roll like AC DC and all the way to a smooth mellow acoustic. It's the best $300 I've ever spent . Even if it was $1000 I would of paid that now knowing how good it is
Try all types threw it budd
OK ... after listening to the part where u play Ozzy - Bark ate the moon .... now i want one VM :D
The huge difference between this and the 2466 is the plate voltage. They have a staggering 100 volts differen
Woah!
Great tone...i wish i buy that amp when it cameout... its hard to looking a decent and good bargain marshall vint mod nowdays
Hi Leon! How is this compared to dsl or jcm 900? Thanks a lot
I did a comparison with the DSL on here :)
@@LeonTodd thanks , but For you what is the best amp? I have 2203 #34 #36 and 1959 Jose’. Thanks best regards
Hey Leon,
My favourite demo channel on YT!🙂 I love my 2466 but steel fight with eq😆 what eq settings you use on HDR? Middle boost on?
Cheers😁
Def mid boost with the strat!
Thanx🙂 What obout eq settings?
Is this the 50 watter or hundred watter
Great playing!! You think they are a reliable amp? I have the oportunity to get a purple one of 100w
Thanks, been great so far!
🌞
you make me got one! thx!
Hi Leon, the VM souns very good in your hands indeed, definitely dig it. Great channel, excellent playing, you got a new subscriber ;-)
Thanks for the kind words mate, and thanks for subscribing! Hopefully you'll enjoy what i've got planned for future vids ;)
I think so, considering your channel's focus, content and quality. Btw I'm another fan of Johan Segeborn here :-)
Johan is one dude on YT I'd love to hang out with, he really nails vintage tones.
If its good enough for Robin Trower, then it’s good enough for me lol
AMEN!
Great playing and finally another good amp walkthrough! How do you make the guitar recording so whisper quiet noisewise? Do you use a noisegate of sorts?
Kjetil Myhre Berge I've got the cab isolated in another room and mic'd up, then I edited out any parts where the amp is idling.
Old video, but... Do you remember how many speakers were in that cab?
How it will go in comparison to JCM 800 2203?
Post scriptum: I do not like that much other JCM 800s except 2203.
nice paul
Great vid. I have the same, but i dont know what peddal to use as lead guitar player for solo boost and delay? Gr from Holland .
An eventide H9 would do the trick nicely, although it's pricier. A DD-20 and an EQ pedal together would be sweet!
Is the dynamic range footswitchable? Sweet sounds, especially on the high dynamic range.
It is but there's a fair volume difference.
Leon Todd tried it with a tubescreamer or SD1 or something like that? I don't own a Marshall anymore as I've got an Orange. Would love to see you demo an Orange. I have a TH30. It gets a bit of a bashing, mostly by people who've never played it or get turned off by the made in China tag, but it's a well built amp
Love it with both those pedals. orange rules, I love my Dark terror.
Leon Todd I actually saw the Dark Terror review. I also have a Jim Root terror, lovely little amp. Would like to stick a video review up at some point. Don't think anyone has really done it justice on here. The tone is very thick.
Great demo! I own one like this and I think is quite difficult to find out the right eq. Can you put your eq. settings in LDR? Have you been using any booster?
xisco nexus I usually go with; Bass 3, middle 6, Treble 8, presence 4, master 5 and with body at half of what I have detail at. The master needs to be up for this amp to come alive.
Great clip. What model is the amp (2466 or 2266) and what was the Master Volume set at for this take? Was actually thinking about finding one but can't decide on which one to hunt down. Thanks.
Brendan Murphy should have mentioned, this is the 50 watt model. Master was just past noon.
I might be wrong but i go impression Marshall Vintage Modern sound vise is similar to Friedman BE100. Am i correct or wrong?! :)
What is tube mean? Is this tubed? Or do they make a tube and non tube version? Please explain to my stupid ass
Sounds tight Like my reissue 100 Plexi
You have quite a unique way of dialing in these tones I feel. Of course big part is the playing itself. Any chance of profiling this amp? Like dialed in from 6:10 or so. That's totally bitching.
I'll definitely profile this when i next get my hands on my friend's Kemper, it has a really unique lower mid grind that is well worth capturing. The Cascade Fat Head plays a big role in the tone too.
Hey Leon, have you tried the vintage modern 2266 50w combo? How does it compare? Cheers
I haven't unfortunately
todd amazing playing and you are the only i guess who knows how to tweak this
whats a good price for this amp in your opinion? there s one here for sale and am wondering how much should i pay to be considered a steal:D:D
silver anything under $750USD for this amp would be an amazing deal
thanks todd...keep 'em coming
silver hey silver, I bought a 2466 of a guy up here in Canada and I basically stole it from him , 650.00 CND and that was with 4 brand new output tubes , I couldn't resist ..
silver and I forgot to mention , mine is the purple version , they were the first ones to come out , later they switched to black tolex , if you see a purple one grab it , these are the most desirable ones , cheers
yes the one i saw here is purple with a purple cabinet
i think its more like blue right?
Leon, were any pedals in front ???
The plexi eq? .. I always thought that was everything on 10 except the treble which is on 0 ..
Mind you, having said that, Malcom Young has everything on about 3 so what do I know?!! .. :-)
Hey Leon, do you have mid boost on? Sounds killer!
Got this through a Harley Benton with chinese Greenbacks.
Am I good to go, or am I missing something tonewise with this cab?
"If it sounds good it is good" is my mantra; are you enjoying it?
I miss some of the pretty cleans from my Mesa Express.. No matter how I dial the treble, presence and detail, it sounds too piercing, or muffled. Dunno if its the lower and higher mids eq on it, or the cab, therefore my question, and i'm still trying to get that sweet spot.
I do have an MXR eq pedal, but it adds some noise, and I would rather like my base tone, then mess it up if I have to with EQ.
leon is right , but im assuming a harkey benton cab is made of mdf,if youre looking to upgrade maybe get a cab made of plywood or birch
The cab is your problem. Ditch the Harley Benton and find the matching Marshall 425 cab. You won't look back.
I am obviously missing something. Can anyone please explain to me why the vintage sounding Greenback speakers are best for the VM when the VM already has a huge amount of mid and vintage plexi sound. Wouldn't 75W Celestion speakers be better?
It's now a case that plexi style amp + greenbacks = classic (60s/70s) Marshall tone
Shoegaze forever ,
This amp was the first Marshall I had. It’s a bad ass amp but it’s a different animal in the sense that it’s very sensitive to what you run through it and your playing.
Speakers it’s a matter of personal taste. What tone you’re going for. This amp sounds good with 75’s. To my ears , you can’t get the sweeter Plexi type tones as well with them though. For instance, if you’re going for early Van Halen or typical classic rock tones , it always sounded like something was missing with 75’s. Close but not quite hitting the mark. If you’re trying to get a more modern hard rock tone 75’s or 75’s x v30 would give it that edge you don’t quite get out of a greenback voiced speaker. Especially considering with the Kt66 tubes it doesn’t have that grind of an EL34. It has a more refined tone and less “in your face”. The amp is basically a hot rodded 100 watt JTM 45 with two preamp gain structures and an effects Loop. It will drive you nuts if you’re trying to get that Jmp and later type EL34 grind going on. It’ll get close but it’s not what it was meant to sound like.
The things that people don’t like about this amp are :
A- they think it’s a channel switching amp.
B- they don’t know how to play an amp using the volume on their guitar. Which requires having a guitar setup with decent audio taper pots and reasonable low-mid output pickups.
C- this amp absolutely will not hide bad playing or technique by over use of preamp gain. Which is what makes this a really great amp. It forces you to be a an accurate player and learn how to get good tones or you’re gonna sound like shit.
L Grim442
Many thanks for your long and detailed answer. I guess I'll have to start saving up for some Greenbacks to get that pure Plexi sound.
For recording, I use the amazing Blackstar HT Dual overdrive/distortion pedal (which has a speaker emulated output) to get a Plexi-like sound as I cannot yet be bothered to lose part of my life mic-ing amps (although, of course, that will soon change now that I own a VM).
Shoegaze forever ,
No problem. I was just sharing what I found and liked personally.
Don’t just take my word for it. If you think you would like 75’s better , go for it. Find what you like and what works for you.
It’s up to personal taste.
I played in a band with a guy that had a Mesa rectifier. Popular speaker choice is V30. He tried 75’s and V30’s. Found he preferred 75’s. But then he also thought my VM2466 sounded better then my 79 JMP 2204.😳
Can you give me some tips on how to dial in my Marshall vm
What sort of tone are you chasing? What speakers and guitar are you using?
I am going for a grunge sludge type sound I have a bad cat speaker cab with vintage 30s
I am using a Gibson Les Paul
there is an old interview with Geordie from Killing Joke who went down to Marshall to check these amps out and was VERY impressed...at time he had endorsement with Framus using Dragon heads but in 80's Geordie had large stack of BURMAN hand wired and if anyone has ever plugged into a BURMAN ( I have a 2 x 12 combo) then you know how powerful and attacking the output is...Geordie noted the KT66 and valve array on these VM's and said 'these are basically BURMANS' ...I dont know if he went on to play VM's but his comments are very interesting ... and from the video here , the VM's sound great & are cheap used.... worth looking for the Geordie interview... hes wearing a skull cap on the thumbnail.... its here ! th-cam.com/video/fuEuvIaQnL4/w-d-xo.html
Burman hey. Will hand to check those out
Burman are the other British cousin of Orange & Matamp...point to point miltary grade wiring and very heavy duty transformers... they dont look sexy but mine has no standby and when you turn it on its totally silent, no hum... if you crank it to 1 expect the neighbours to bang on your wall..it has 3 gain stages and a sterile reverb,,,but crank it past 12 o clock and you will make the floorboards and window frames vibrate...if house is not concrete...ive not looked on youtube for any Burman reviews...they went out of business a long time go but Greg Burman may still be around...im not sure...they were built in North East England... someone must have done a youtube on them....if not I may do one in future and i will let you know...not a brown sounding amp...very crystal clear .... if you can find old Killing Joke live on The Tube music program you can see I think....'Eighties' era about 1982.... here 2 stacks plus his ADT FX and gold Gibson semi 1983 - th-cam.com/video/zETNFX-s6Q4/w-d-xo.html 1985 - th-cam.com/video/TwIiGBpR9uQ/w-d-xo.html and what could be Geordie using VM's in 2010 th-cam.com/video/pNRm1CtrMRM/w-d-xo.html
I must be the only one that doesn't get it? every VM demo i've heard on youtube they sound very bright/harsh and a bit sterile, lacking warmth and body! Just comparing with the JCM 2000 DSL50 demo you did, and I notice how warmer the DSL sounds, especially on the clean channel. Maybe it's the speakers or the mic placement, not picking up all the frequencies? or maybe it's just me! :-) Excellent review by the way.
lo5man cheers! I've got a demo coming out with the side by side to better compare the two heads. The DSL is a bit more forgiving IMO whereas the VM is pickier about eq, speaker and mic placement.
Leon That's great, I look forward to hearing it. Keep up the sterling work.
Interesting what TH-cam does by default...one person shakes the neck of his or her guitar and suddenly everyone does it....the theater of the mind.
Been doing it before TH-cam exsited lol
Lol it is true. It’s become a sickness
That and moving their pick hand in an exaggerated swoop lol!! Like it pumps up the viewer who is watching the guitarist doing it 🙄😂
Is there a difference between the black and purple edition?
Aside from the colour, i think the guts are the same.
What tubes are in your VM @Leon Todd? Ive installed a set of Tung-Sol KT66 (removing the bear trap and replacing them with spring retainers!) and 4 plain ole JJ Ecc83s. The tones that you get in the video makes me think about goin back to the stock tubes lol.
Daniel N pretty sure it's all stock, I have no idea what's in there at the moment.
Daniel N I removed the bear trap claws from mine as well. The tubes I pu t in it was a tight fit and didn't need anything like that anyways. If mine would have sounded this good I would still have it!!!
I have a 50 Vintage Modern. Paired with a Marshall JCM-900 cab. With Greenback Celestion speakers. Too bad it doesn't have EL34 tubes. Its got KT77s. But if I had EL34s, I would have AC/DC's sound without having a plexi. But I ultimately want the Marshall Master Volume from the 1970s. I've seen AC/DC use them with Bon Scott, and I absolutely need that amp.
Hi Leon, I'm undecided between the Ax8 and the Headrush .... what do you say? Have you tried the Eleven?
I haven't tried the Headrush, but it is basically the exact same amp models from the Eleven Rack with a way better user interface. The amp models in the 11R are fine but nowhere near the Fractal stuff IMO; plus you have regular firmware updates and added features with Fractal, awesome tech support and really great sounding effects and cab models in the box. While I don't think you'll be disappointed with either, the AX8 wins out on tone alone.
I just got one in dark purple with matching cab for $1,500
