Oh, man! KILLER video!!! This is probably the best demo of the Vintage/Modern on TH-cam. Your explanation of how the Detail and Body controls work is something that nobody ever really gets right, but you nailed it. The range of tones you got really showcases how versatile this amp is. If there is another single channel amp out there that can cover as much tonal ground as the VM, I’ve never seen it! You were clearly having fun playing and it and I was equally enjoying hearing it!! Plus….you riffed out some “Kiss of Death” AND some Loudness! WELL DONE!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Wow, thank you!!!! I plan to have a pack of captures available for Kemper and QC available in the coming weeks. This amp’s too great to not have all the sounds available! Thank you for watching!
Wow! Thank you for such a cool comment! I'm still somewhat new to all this video stuff but each one I make I learn. Regarding the tones, man, they're all right there in the amp, I just had to let 'em out. ANd what a great feeling amp as well! Such a great amp! Thank you for watching!
I love amps that nobody cares nor understand them. This is probably the best Marshall amp since JCM800. Steve Dawson made a genius amp! High profile guitar players at some point used them live: Jeff Beck, Paul Gilbert, Slash, Doug Aldrich, Robin Trower... Maybe the market wasn't prepared for this kind of product. The kind of market that uses the volume knob as the main piece of gear! Marshall consider making one in the Studio Series. Who knows? I'm biased; I have one and will never ever sell it! Just need a place to connect to a proper 4x12 and Rock!!! Is it the best amp? No, it's not. But is one of the best amps! Amazing video, well explained and very educative. Thanks!
It's definitely a different beast, even from a Plexi type amp. I felt much the same way when I bought mine but once I took some time with it, I'm now blown away!
Awwww I hate that!!!! I have a feeling these will see somewhat of a resurgence and prices on the used market might go up. Right now they’re still somewhat reasonable so ya might wanna grab one from Reverb while ya can. Thank you for watching!
Thank you! Usually when making videos, I just kinda let the camera go and play whatever comes to mind, it’s almost never intentional. For this video I ended up having over 2 1/2 hours of total footage, a lot of it playing stuff, some trying to figure out riffs that come to mind, some of it really bad too LOL. Thank you for watching!
Great Vintage Modern video, Steve! I have never played through one. I love those clean tones near the beginning. (Nice Tele, BTW!). Those overdrive tones were amazing as well. Sounds like a very versatile amp from country chicken picking(beginning approx.5:15) to bluesy rock/metal. I love that blues riff that reminds me of Great White’s “Rock Me” and Ratt’s “Way Cool Jr”. Killer tone. Of course, I love those Loudness, Lynch, Jake E. Lee, Whitesnake tones as well. I especially loved the “Kiss Of Death”and “High Wire” tones. I really enjoyed this video. I watched it twice. Killer lead tone at the 12:50 mark with the Maxon OD. That amp is oozing with tones. Of course, with a master musician like you rocking it! Keep these videos coming!
I love my matching head and cab. I went to sell it a few years ago though and no one really understood it or new what they were missing. My favourite marshall and wont consider selling again.
Well done, just goes to show if you understand how the gear works and apply the correct technique you can make just about anything useful. The fact that you can play really well really makes a difference too.
I bought the 50W cab version 2nd hand about 10 years ago for what was a bargain at that time. This is the most understated amp in the entire Marshall range. It is my sound and it's so versatile. Its cleans are dreamy, its crunch is dirty, it's overdrive just kicks you in the guts. It takes pedals on the front end and it takes effects in its preamp loop really really well. So much so, I sold all my other amps. This is the only amp I use. Great review, Steve. Nailed it.
Exactly. My expierence is - i've had this amp once, 100w head. thought it was not enough "marshally", i just couldn't hit desired "authentic" tones, so i sold it. Lately i found out that i was just incompetent to dial it in propely, and got one back, this time more practical 50w head. This is now the best jtm45 for me.
Thank you. When I make videos I usually just play then pick some stuff in editing. This amp just feels so good it inspired so much different stuff, there was over 2 1/2 hours of footage to weed through in the edit. Thank you for watching!
The VM is a cool concept. I think it was buried behind the popularity of the flagship JVM (which has endured), also the rise of smaller "giggable" amps and digital technology. The VM really seems to require / deserve a space to be cranked.
I love how you included the word 'Deserve' because it most assuredly does! When you get it up to volume some damn near magical things happen! Thank you for your kind words and for watching!
Nice video. I also watched Marshall's video with the designer of this amp explaining his thought processes when designing it. I was not familiar with this amp until I saw your post on Marshall forum, but based on what I've seen and heard in these two vids, this one is now on my radar. I tend towards Hiwatts, and this appears to be a Marshall that sits between Hiwatt and JCM...so something I am very interested in trying. Subscribed.
@@TheGuitarNerdShow In a nutshell, Hiwatt preamps do not appreciably distort at any volume setting, and when cranked, all distortion is from the power amp. So held notes/chords decay into chime instead of decaying into less preamp buzz. Vastly different feel and style.
Thank you! I’m in the middle of a bit of a health crisis at the moment so there won’t be any be videos for a little while bit I I WILL be back sooner than later! Thank you for watching.
I'll have capture packs of all my amps available in the next few months for Kemper, QC and ToneX. Keep you eye on this channel, I'll definitely be posting demos of all of them.
I think a lot of people didn’t understand how the amp works, how to dial in that great sound. That’s my guess. Or, maybe there were a lot of lemons. Thank you for watching!
Marshall user since 1972 (first one was a Plexi, still much missed!), I have owned, played , toured and recorded with almost ALL of the Marshall range (maybe even a JCM900, which I hated). I have recently sold a 1976 Super Bass head and replaced it with a 50w VM (My studio needed some upgrades!), but I don't regret it at all! Something very important is the speakers. At the moment I'm using a 4x12" Jimi Hendrix limited edition with special Greenbacks in it, but it also sound awesome with the other 1960 I own, with normal Greenbacks. I haven't tested it yet with my third 1960 loaded with V30s, I'm very curious to hear what it sounds like. Great with my TS9 or other Tube Screamer-type OVDs I own. Great head, and as it's a 50 watter, even better for any use, studio or (hopefully) live (now I'm using more transportable Fender combos)
@@TheGuitarNerdShowa lot of what these newer Marshalls are trying to do is give you "that sound" and keep it in a smaller and lower manageable volume while keeping the intensity of the larger louder gear
Anyone playing Kiss of Death with Dokken should get more views! The amp sounds ace too! Great you test it with different pedals! Somtimes I even have the SD-1 before the BB.
Thank you! Man, I have always loved those riffs in that song and they really work well on this amp. As does Bark at the Moon. I hadn't thought to stack the SD-1 and the BB Preamp. I might have to try that. Thank you for watching!
I might trade my EVH 5150 III combo to get one of those 2x12 50 watt VM combo. Your demo sounds killer. I’d love to see a 20 watt studio series version of it. The difference between EL34 and KT66 tubes is that KT66 tubes use more voltage than EL34, 6L6, or 5881 tubes. You would have to use a transformer that can handle those KT66 tubes.
Wonderful demo, world class! Is the mic clean or going through a colored preamp, transistor or compression? Also, for those clean edge of break up Hendrixy tones, is it real loud (rock drum kit loud, or neighbours hating you loud?) Let's say is it viable for raunchy cleans barely touching break up when you live in a detached house with neighbours next door? Apparently the cleans are a bit shallow on low volume, would love your opinion. PS: Great video, many thanks.
Thank you for your kind words! The mics are running directly to my Universal Audio X8P interfaces. No external preamps, nor are there any preamp color plugins. No EQ either - just raw mic signal. Delay and Reverb added in post. It's loud. I haven't experimented much with lower volume playing, for me it seems the amp opens up around 6 on the master volume. It's a 100 watt tube amp so, yeah it's loud LOL, but I too live in a house with close neighbors. Thus fan I'm not getting complaints but it's not because they can't hear it, believe me LOL!!!! Thank you for watching!
You would make any amp to sound good. Still I am with you regarding VM. My favorite amplifier. There is though another trick that it can do: super clean sound in Low Dynamic Range. It can be achieved even with Les Paul.
That is really kind of you to say - thank you! If you watch through the video, that's where I started - nice clean sound in LDR. Best clean Marshall tone I've ever heard! Thank you for watching!
Hey man, I just found your channel cause I love marshall amps and especially modded ones. You sound great btw, curious about your OD pedal...I got the same one and curious why you don't have the level cranked up like most other guys do?
Thank you for your kind words! Which pedal, the Maxon/Tube Screamer? I do crank the level all the way up and usually keep the drive knob low or all the way off. The pedal pictured in the video is just a random stock photo of it, mostly as a visual cue. My pedals are velcroed on top of a rack in the corner that's both hard to get to with a camera as well as not being well lit to it's pretty hard to get a good shot. You mentioned loving Modded Marshalls - have you seen the video I put up today? It features my modified Marshall JMP-1 preamp through my Jubilee. Some great tones there for sure! Thank you for watching!
Nice video and playing!!! Questions: After seeing this video: 1. Does this amp have a direct line out? 2. If you had to pick one of your Marshalls, which would it be - the Vintage Modern? Studio Plexi? Studio JCM800? I'm trying to decide on one. I play some Jeff Beck songs so I will be rolling my volume to clean things up, but I also need notes to cut and sustain when I turn up the volume on my guitar. I will be using the amp at home, and possibly direct for recordings for videos. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your kind words. No direct out, just the effects loop and speaker out. If you're playing Jeff Beck, I'd choose the Vintage Modern, as Mr. Beck (RIP) did. He apparently loved it. For direct recordings I'd just get a load box. There are some great ones out there it is my opinion that most amps sound better when pushing 16 ohms, so look for a 16 ohms load box. Thank you for watching!
Got a little Origin 5 combo and I really like it for home use. Also got a DSL-1 also a fun little amp (both same speaker 100% identical) and does sound different. Don't let anybody tell you what does sound right or wrong. Would not mind owning a Plexi or 800 😉
I see you have what looks like a JVM in there. Would love to see a comparison between the Vintage Modern and JVM to see if the JVM can cop some of the VM tones.
That’s a great idea! I’ll be honest, I haven’t had much success on the JVM other than on the OD1 channel but I haven’t put in as much time with it as I should. I think a comparison like that could be great! Thank you for watching!
I think the Origin 50 is completely useable with the right vintage Celestion G12M65 from 1980 16 ohm pair Sounds great with a strat I have many original vintage Marshall amps to test against and this amp does well regardless of the fact that they can be had for around 300-400 used
It’s definitely a great amp. I’ve not tried it through the G12-65’s yet, I have a 4x12 loaded with those from 1982, I need to give em a listen. I’d like to try the Origin too! Thank you for watching!
I had one of these and it was great. Wish I had kept it. However I found it was really a one channel amp. You needed to set it up as either a one channel amp and use pedals or a rock amp. I do think once that is understood it is a great setup.
Did you have the master fully dimed for all tones? I use my 2466 with an Ox Box and noticed that it sounds a bit lackluster if the master isn‘t at least on 3-4 o‘ clock. Could maybe use a set of new tubes since it still has the factory ones from 2007. When Friedman came out with the 100w JEL-model in 2020 I remembered the VM since it does a similar thing uniting Plexi with hot rodded 80‘s tones.
That master isn’t fined for all of it. It’s on 6 for most of the video, the only place I domed it is for those classic crunch sounds, starting around 6:15 (ZZ Top, Kiss, Stones and the little dynamic thing starting with the thumb plunking.) Thank you for watching!
The Vintage Modern is an amazing amp. Have one of the cabs, and best Marshall cab ever owned. Looking for a head.

Wow, thank you!!!! I plan to have a pack of captures available for Kemper and QC available in the coming weeks. This amp’s too great to not have all the sounds available!
Thank you for watching!
Cant believe you just payed Jake!? I bow to you sir!!
hahahaha, thank you! Jake's the man!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome Steve!
Thank you Bro. Thanks for watching!
Excellent pro level and great playing! The tones you got this setup is through the roof! Thanks.
Wow! Thank you for such a cool comment! I'm still somewhat new to all this video stuff but each one I make I learn.
Regarding the tones, man, they're all right there in the amp, I just had to let 'em out. ANd what a great feeling amp as well! Such a great amp!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome video! Love your playing and how you clearly explained the amp. Love my 50 watt VM head! Love that Loudness riff!
Thank you - I appreciate your kind words! And thank you for watching!
I have a Monomyth modded Vintage Modern that absolutely slays! Shea is a amp wizard.
Oh wow! I'd love to get a hold of that for a few hours - I bet it's a BEAST!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your kind words and thanks for watching!
I hated it when i tried one at guitar center. Tried again and took more time with it and was very impressed.
It's definitely a different beast, even from a Plexi type amp. I felt much the same way when I bought mine but once I took some time with it, I'm now blown away!
You just gained my subscription playing Akira!
Haaa that’s cool! Wish more people knew about him.
Thank you for watching!
Cool amp! And you are a hell of a player! Thanks for the video.
Thank you for your kind words!!! And thanks, again, for watching!
Great playing and tone! I loved it with the gain maxxed and the stereo delay.
Thank you for these kind words! I’m really digging what the VM is giving me!
The VintageModern is a great Amp. A bit tricky to dial in but when it is right it sound superb
It’s definitely a different kind of animal but what a beast it can be!
Thank you for watching!
I miss mine. Lost in oversee. I wished they built new ones. Instantly I would buy one today. MARSHALL do it please!!
Awwww I hate that!!!! I have a feeling these will see somewhat of a resurgence and prices on the used market might go up. Right now they’re still somewhat reasonable so ya might wanna grab one from Reverb while ya can.
Thank you for watching!
Awesome tones!
Thank you so much and thanks for watching!
Great video. And! I love that you played stuff folks are familiar with instead of random solo noodling.
Great demo! Loved it!
Thank you! What a great amp.
Thanks Milt! This amp is definitely something special!
Thanks again for watching my friend!
Sounds amazing. So smooth and articulate. I really miss my 2466.
A studio version would be amazing too.
Thank you! It's an amazing amp! I'd love to try a 20w Studio version if it's possible.
Thank you for watching!
I love my matching head and cab. I went to sell it a few years ago though and no one really understood it or new what they were missing. My favourite marshall and wont consider selling again.
Oooooh, had it sold that would sting! Glad you kept it. I’d love to have the matching cab!
Thank you for watching!
@TheGuitarNerdShow it's a purple tolex one too
Great sounding amp and great ripping brother!
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Very Nice!!! Great Playing. Thank You. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Bloody Hell, that sounds KILLER. Also, DOKKEN!
Thank you! Ahhhhh yes, Dokken!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Well done, just goes to show if you understand how the gear works and apply the correct technique you can make just about anything useful.
The fact that you can play really well really makes a difference too.
Thank you for your kind words! And thanks for watching!
Yeah I love mine. I’d never trade it. A studio version is a great idea.
I hope I never have to part with mine!
Thank you for watching!
You got some pretty good soul, brotha!!
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Cool video! I have the 2266 and a 425a. Always amazing to me. Thanks for the snippet of High Wire!
Thanks for your kind words and thank you for watching!
I have the 425 B (straight)
I bought the 50W cab version 2nd hand about 10 years ago for what was a bargain at that time.
This is the most understated amp in the entire Marshall range. It is my sound and it's so versatile. Its cleans are dreamy, its crunch is dirty, it's overdrive just kicks you in the guts. It takes pedals on the front end and it takes effects in its preamp loop really really well.
So much so, I sold all my other amps. This is the only amp I use.
Great review, Steve. Nailed it.
Thank you! The VM is very much a 'it puts out what you put into it' kind of amp. I love it!
Thank you for watching!
Goodness...........that sounded awesome. That Dokken was bad ass.........hell it all sounded great.
Nice demo too - great tones & playing.
Subscribed.
That’s a great comparison! I need an old school Hiwatt, I’ve never had one. I bet I’d love it!
Thanks for watching!
@@TheGuitarNerdShow In a nutshell, Hiwatt preamps do not appreciably distort at any volume setting, and when cranked, all distortion is from the power amp. So held notes/chords decay into chime instead of decaying into less preamp buzz. Vastly different feel and style.
Top Vid !! Thanks for the Examples !
Thanks for your kind words and thank you for watching!
Dang! Fantastic! Just subbed
Thank you! I’m in the middle of a bit of a health crisis at the moment so there won’t be any be videos for a little while bit I I
WILL be back sooner than later!
Thank you for watching.
Thanks for doing this. Great video. I have the 2266. I love it.
Thank you! These are such great amp! I love mine!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome video! You should make some Tonex captures of your favourite settings. I would love to use them in my recordings.
I'll have capture packs of all my amps available in the next few months for Kemper, QC and ToneX. Keep you eye on this channel, I'll definitely be posting demos of all of them.
I've been using the 50 watt since 2010/2011 and I love it ❤
What a great amp!
Thank you for watching!
@TheGuitarNerdShow totally underrated! Great video ✌️
Damn , guitar nerd -amazing tone- you have discovered the tone to die for!
Thank you so much! And thank you for watching!
Thank you 🙏 ❤enjoyed
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
I have a 50w vintage modern I can only imagine the volume level in that room right now
It’s a glorious thing 😁
Thank you for watching!
I just buy one 100w model 2 months ago sound just freaking awesome, don t rly undst why they discontinued the model
I think a lot of people didn’t understand how the amp works, how to dial in that great sound. That’s my guess. Or, maybe there were a lot of lemons.
Thank you for watching!
A boosted VM is heaven!
It sure is!
Wow! What a history you have! I’d love to get my hands on some of those old Marshalls - I’d never wanna leave the house!
Thank you for watching!
That does sound really great
Thank you! It’s one heck of an amp!
Thanks for watching!
Ahhhh, I didn't realize that about the voltage. That's good to know - thanks for the info!
Thank you for watching!
@ KT66 is in the same tube family as 6L6GC and 5881 but the voltage use is different.
@@TheGuitarNerdShowSo I pulled the trigger on Vintage Modern 2x12 combo and took it home yesterday. It’s got a great sound.
It’s probably best Marshall that’s still attainable to mortals.
Haha I love the way you put that and yes!!!
Thank you for watching!
Damn that is one killer amp. Is that 100 w or 50 watt version?
This is the 100 watt version. I love this amp!!!!
Thank you for watching!
I dig them stereo delays you often use 👍🏻
I love some stereo delay, just makes everything sound bigger!
This amp was misunderstood when it first came out. I’m glad I kept mine. These amps sing when the master volume is past 3 o’clock.
I agree - fantastic sounding and feeling amp!
Thank you for watching!
This is THE Marshall amp THEY Don’t WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT!
I wish they'd bring it back! Such a great amp!
Thank you for watching.
Dang man. How have I never heard of this amp? I really want to retire my 78 100w JMP. This has all the tools
It sure does! I can’t say you’ll get what you get out of the JMP but I bet you wouldn’t be disappointed!
Thank you for watching!
Side by side you might be surprised
@TheGuitarNerdShow yes that is awesome. I have a jcm800 I just got modded by groundzero ampworks, it's amazing
I’ve watched a few of his videos - he does amazing work!
@TheGuitarNerdShow Wow, thanks for your thorough response.
Got a little Origin 5 combo and I really like it for home use. Also got a DSL-1 also a fun little amp (both same speaker 100% identical) and does sound different. Don't let anybody tell you what does sound right or wrong.
Would not mind owning a Plexi or 800 😉
It's all about what sounds and feels good to you as a player. One person's junk is another's tone heaven!
Thank you for watching!
I think the Origin 50 is completely useable with the right vintage Celestion G12M65 from 1980 16 ohm pair
Sounds great with a strat I have many original vintage Marshall amps to test against and this amp does well regardless of the fact that they can be had for around 300-400 used
It’s definitely a great amp. I’ve not tried it through the G12-65’s yet, I have a 4x12 loaded with those from 1982, I need to give em a listen.
I’d like to try the Origin too!
Thank you for watching!
You're a great guitar player Sir!
Thank you! That is very kind of you!
Thanks for watching!
If they released a Studio Series 20w version of the VM i’d be very interested
I really think they gotta do it!!!!!
Thank you for watching!
I had one of these and it was great. Wish I had kept it. However I found it was really a one channel amp. You needed to set it up as either a one channel amp and use pedals or a rock amp. I do think once that is understood it is a great setup.
Yeah, I do wish 2-channel functionality was feasible, but for what it is, it's an amazing sounding amp!
Thank you for watching!
It’s on 6 for most of the video, the only place I domed it is for those classic crunch sounds, starting around 6:15 (ZZ Top, Kiss, Stones and the little dynamic thing starting with the thumb plunking.)
Thank you for watching!
