If this interview were conducted when the amp was released it might still be in production today. To hear it from the engineer is very helpful. A truly brilliant and useful design with endless tones.
Eh. I had a Vintage Modern for a few years. This was back in 2010. There was actually a Vintage Modern forum, which Steve (the engineer in this video) was a regular poster. I chatted with him several times trying to get the sound I wanted from the amp, but it never worked out.
I just picked up one of the combos, even with dead power tubes it sounds good, I can’t wait to get the new tubes and the bias done. I want them to bring them back so I could have a backup lol.
What a wonderful tribute to this amp. It was also such a great gesture by Marshall to honor the amp's designer by inviting him to appear in this video. It is really nice to see the people behind the amps, and it makes me respect the company even more for not forgetting the hardworking guys who develop all these awesome amps. Great job, Marshall!
I used this amp every day for a decade. It's probably my favorite Marshall ever, and it is, by far, one of the most versatile. Steve nailed the design!
@@AriaGuitarsFans It's good that the VM offer a little digital reverb. Most of great amps just don't have built-in reverb these days, especially heads. There are so many great reverb pedals today that gets the job done. Just put a good reverb pedal or anasounds spring reverb tank in the fx loop of the VM.
Absolutely. I’d love to add another one of these to my collection. Add in a midi outlet for switching the dynamic range via loop switcher, and it’d be perfect.

One of the best offerings from Marshall in the modern era. Very happy to see Marshall honoring it and its designer. Hope to see more Steve Dawson creations being showcased.
I must say I LOVE the Vintage Modern! I've owned the 100watt 2466 since 2009. In 2010 I blew a tube because a speaker cable I had failed me and it took out a bias resistor, I contacted Steve Dawson on the then named "Marshall Vintage Modern Forum", now called "Musicians Roadhouse Forum" and Steve was kind enough to personally help me get my amp back into service. I sent him pictures of the board and what blew and described how it happened and he told me exactly what to do and I was able to fix my amplifier FAST without waiting for a tech....no better tech than the actual designer!. About a year ago on the Musicians Roadhouse forum I posted a video of my then band playing GNR's "Nightrain" and Steve gave it a like! I felt like I had made it as a musician at that point! Thank You Steve for such a great amp! While lots of folks have had sellers remorse over selling their Vintage Modern due to lack of understanding how to dial it in, I have not because I've never wanted to sell it, I'm proud to say that I've owned my original VM all these years and still believe in it just as much as I did years ago!.
I'm a proud 2266c owner. The preamp gains are a work of genius and the MV is so well done; I can easily play at bedroom levels and still get great sounds out of. I used to want a new amp every few months, but since getting this Marshall about 5 years ago, I haven't once felt I wanted to sell it on and get something different. Kudos to Steve Dawson, the Vintage Modern line are true modern classics.

If they bring it back, however, they need to make it mid boost footswitchable (I think we can all agree on that). Man, on a final note I want to point out that in the early 2000s Steve contributions to Marshall were very substantial. Love that you got Steve back in for this, he was always such a great contributor to the Marshall Amp Forum, really sharing insight into his designs and how to get the most out of them. The VM was always a struggle for guitarists who were used to channel-switching amps and plug and play. Hugely misunderstood amps.

I had a 2466 head with a 1960TV cab with greenbacks. Was an amazing setup. I ended up having to sell it but always loved the VM sound. And steve was active on the VM forum back then too and was always happy to give advise and discuss his designs. Beautiful amplifier
Incredible amplifier. I got so lucky with my 2466 and got it for a steal at the local music shop about six years ago. Around five-six months after I made the purchase, I started seeing the internet guitar-realm light up over the Vintage Modern; this mythical, forgotten amp by Marshall that produces dead-on cranked plexi tones without killing everyone in the audience. They were already hard to come by, and prices went through the roof - higher than old Super Leads, in some cases. The craze isn’t quite what it once was. However, there’s still a strong demand for these amps, and they’d sell like hot cakes if Marshall reissued them.
This was my gigging amp for my time in a rockabilly band (amongst others). An absolutely killer tone with my Gretsch and some slapback. Testament to the Vintage Modern's versatlity. I also remember trying a Les Paul through it (I'm usually more about single coils) and noticing how the tone kept on improving more and more as the gain was DECREASED. A magical amp with a huge palette of colours. Marshall need to bring it back exactly as it was. It just doesn't need any additional gimmicks.
Thats funny you say that! Here's a funny story, I had a friend from a rockabilly band that wanted to join forces with me in a second band and he kept trying to turn me on to all these hotroded Fender amps he owns (while always complaining about the Fenders he owned at practice) one practice I brought the Vintage Modern instead of my Jubilee and made him reluctantly jam on it, I can still see his 400lb fat ass grinning and saying to me "fuck I want to hate this amp, but the tones I've been trying to get out of these hotrodded Fenders are in that God Damn Marshall!".
Absolutely love this amp! It was always a joy participating with Steve Dawson in Vintage Modern discussions on some of the Marshall amp forums. The only thing I don't understand about the amp is it's difficult to use boost pedals with it because there seems to be some kind of limiter or governor that prevents pedals from boosting the volume. Other than that, the amp is perfect!
I was able to obtain a 2466 with the matching 425a and 425b cabs. Is it the most versatile amp I have ever had. My neighbors don’t mind when I crank it which is great! Ive debated letting it go but I never come to terms with it. I hope Marshall reissues these! A lot of people that I know have never heard of this line of amps. This amp gets better the more time and dedication you spend getting your tone and playing with pedals. I recommend people this amp! I also will tell you that if you’re gonna build a full stack with the matching cabs then good luck finding those. It took me 3 years to match everything together with cabs in good shape! Thank you Steve!!!
Played one of these probably 9/10 years ago in a music store and loved that you could use your volume knob so articulately, the other amp I played was a JTM1 unfortunately I couldn’t afford either and now I’m kinda tempted to get one but don’t know if it will be a meet your hero’s moment. Please reissue this!
I consider this to be Marshall’s last great amp. I gigged with one for a while back in the 2010’s and it was awesome. Once I learned to run it in the high dynamic mode with the gain down, things really got good. Like a dumb ass, I sold it. Edit - found another used, bought it, gigged it yesterday.
I had the chance to borrow it for a gig from one of the other bands in the gig,I used it for a metalcore band and the owner used it for his glam tribute band in the same night. no kind of boost whatsoever infront of the amp, just pure Marshall power. He used it with in the LDR mode with his gibson SG and got insanely good JCM800 kinda tones, I turned on the HDR mode with the exact same settings with my Ibanez 7 string and I got the heaviest guitar tone ever! The exact thing I try to recreate with my digital rigs. the VM has been my dream amp ever since, and I wish you'll bring it back to production (especially in a smaller Studio package) :)
Back in the day this was, and still kinda is, my dream amp! I just didn't have the money for it back in the days and now it's discontinued and very hard to find second hand (at least in the Netherlands). Would love to see this thing make a return. Such an amazing amp. Would buy it in a heartbeat!
Hallo ik heb er twee in nieuwstaat er zijn een of twee optredens mee gedaan door een mr rtrower ,voor de rest onbespeeld compleet met twee 1934 speaker cabs 2 12s non greenbacks
Steve serviced my old JMP 50 plexi at his workshop in mid 2021. Made an excellent job of it, and an old 100w Lead & Bass transistor head. Doubt I'd trust anyone else with it.
Traded away my blue 2266 50w head a few years ago as it didn't suit my band at the time. Missed it so much that I bought it back from the guy a few years later! 😊
Such a great amp! Every time I think about selling mine because I have too many amps, I play through it and suddenly can’t bring myself to let go. It has everything I love about my JTM45 and more!
Great video! Including Steve Dawson and his thoughts as designer was a treat. Love to see similar on the 6100LM and Mode Four too…& everything else 😂Thanks!
Just am trying to get one. Seems to have been an underrated masterpiece, whyever. Just discovered it some time ago and I really was positively surprised.
Just got a 2266 a few weeks ago. Gave away the 410h and couldn't be happier. When I found out that I used only one sound in the jvm, I thought I could also get the (modern) real thing. It is a bit quirky but that's part of the charme. 😍
Great series! I had a VM years ago, but always thought it sounded too ’thick’ for my playing style. Changed too JVM for a while but am a happy 4100 JCM 900 user now; the amp I grew up with.
This is my favorite amp I've ever owned. It's absolutely a blast to play through, and totally inspiring for me. Many, many tones are available within, including modern metal sounds (with a boost). Thankfully, many years ago at the Name show I was able to shake Steve's hand and tell him he did one hell of a job designing it. I have had various amps over the years that do the Fender/Marshall thing. I've recorded many Marshalls over the years, and this one, when dialed in, just does everything I've ever wanted in a Marshall. The only critiques I have are that I'm not real fond of the effects loop, so I leave it disengaged and run everything in front. It's also not the loudest 100w amp I've played by a long shot. Even with a 412, I have a little trouble keeping up with my drummer at times, but to be fair he's also the loudest drummer on earth lol. It just barely hangs with him. But all that said, I can't believe how great it sounds and I'm willing to forego all the modern amp appointments to get a sound like this. Amazing piece of gear that is way under appreciated. Glad to see it getting some love. Kudos Steve, this is a masterpiece!
My only complaint with the Vintage Modern amp was that it wouldn't stay on the high dynamic range when you turn it off. It's a nitpick of mine that I had to always switch it back to the HDR when I turned the amp back on. Otherwise this is a fantastic amp! Sounds fantastic.
I sold my vintage modern and lasted about 6 months before I had to buy another one. It's a very unique Marshall, definitely not like others in the lineup.
IMHO, this was the best modern Marshall. I don’t understand why it wasn’t marketed as a flagship model, black tolex and all. You can tell this guy put is heart into this amp, designed for tone-chasers. And he nailed it. The fact that this was discontinued remains puzzling.
Took me 3 years to find the matching cabs. The guy that had my 425a before me told me it took him 5 years to find it. In good shape, of course! I wish you luck on your journey, sir!
I have a 2466 and love the two volume controls so I can really dial in each guitar properly (single coil vs humbucker). Please reissue the 2466 as I want another one BUT, please drop the reverb for a depth control please 😉. You have to reissue the matching 425A/B cabs with the G12C’s as well so I can have 2 full stacks 😎🤘 Frickin amazing speakers!
Just a head's up, my purple head looks very, very dark in my room, almost black. Unless you're pointing a very bright light on it, like they seem to do on most these videos, you're not gonna strike out as a Prince wannabe on-stage. What I mean is, it's not as invasive, if you find a big bright purple box on stage invasive (which I do) as it appears in most videos. I also never use any gain off of it, only cleans. Yeah I'm a big daft in taste I guess, but it's a great clean platform for whatever I what. Thought about selling it to get a Lone Star, but I'd rather just save for some more months and keep both. Unless it skyrockets in value, I don't think I'm getting rid of mine too soon. It has this dark quality that I think would complement any Fender sound very well. PS: Skip the FX Loop. It sucks, and also changes your tone completely. Also, set the Master to 10 and forget it, use the pre-gain bass and treble controls instead (detail/body ). Specially on Single Coils, that saves you alot of noise, and you can squeeze more out of the amp (specially Presence for that chimey goodness) because of that.
I have a purple 50w head, the jewel light doesn't work and the reverb packed up ages ago but I wouldn't change it for the world. Definitely a tone machine as stated in the video.
Celestion G12 C 16 ohm speakers used in these amps have a 53H1777 cone same as celestion blue alnico nomex paper voice coil and same frame as a Greenback These speakers sound incredible in open back cabs, not so good in sealed cabs
I own one of the last hand wired ‘73 1987 50watt heads. Guess this Vintage Modern model somehow got by me because I thought this was a promo for something new, lol. Like what I heard. I just may look for one of these for stage use.
Brilliant video, I would like to see one on the 2001 bass amp, I remember talking to the chap at Marshall, he made them all. I wish I never sold my one I had new.
I have this amp (combo) and used it with Gibsons and was a bit bored with it. It has been gathering dust in a studio of a friend. But, I just got my first strat and now I can’t wait to try it again.
I love my 2266. I do think that it would be better if they had used the footswitch to control the boost; too much going on with the stock set-up. I'll never sell it. Great video.
@@jacob_miller To me it looks like it’s not on on the Marshall clip. When i had a 50W Vintage Modern head i had the mid boost on most of the time playing a Les Paul. I thought it sounded a bit thin and trebly with it off.
The guy who sold me my 1974x told me about these amps, because it was my first Marshall (and I still love the 1974---and nos tubes made it even better), and I eventually got the gas for kt66 tubes, because i absolutely had to have that " it's a long way to the top" Malcolm tone. Fast forward to early 2022, and I found a 2266c available. So, I started researching if what the guy said was true, that this amp was the best affordable version of a jtm/45, and I found that Segeborn had made multiple videos on this amp. Well, Johann milked every classic Marshall tone out of this amp, including the only one I thought i wanted at the time. He had me swooning as I found out this amp could do tons more classic tones, then he put in the final sword, like a matador finishes off a bull, by dialing in the "love removal machine" tone on this dirtbox, and my knees buckled. I bought it the next day, and i have discovered even more tones that fall chronologically in between the two aforementioned above. Dawson has simply created an amp that encapsulates every Marshall tone from c.1966 to the mid eighties in my estimation, and for that I think we should all be humbly indebted. Sure, it has it's shortcomings, some of which Steve had nothing to do with, but the pros vastly outweigh the cons on this amp, as I continually find new tones on this thing every time I plug in and start fiddling with it. As others have noted, it is THE MOST TOUCH SENSITIVE AND GUITAR KNOB SENSITIVE amp that i have ever come across. I think I owe Steve another debt of gratitude for this, as it has forced me to become a better player with pick dynamics and attention to guitar knob settings. And that part isn't intimidating, it's exhilarating. I don't feel like my bad playing is being exposed, rather, it opens up vast new territories for me. You put a nice set of handwound pickups through this box, and you'll find yourself uttering "oh fuck, you can do that!?!". I'm a guy who primarily loved, and still loves Fenders and Voxes, and imagine my surprise that I now have virtually every Marshall tone I have ever dreamt about in one rig. Thank you, Mr Dawson.
Why the hell don’t Marshall still make these? I’d buy one in a heartbeat. JVM- too much going on. DSL - make all your guitars sound the same with fuzzy tone. Reissues- too loud. Origins -yuk. Come on Marshall. It’s time.
People got confused with balancing the two volumes like a jumpered plexi, it probably wasn’t launched the best. In todays world you send out pre release samples to “influencers”, they do reviews and drop on release day, and everyone knows what to expect and where to go for their type of tone.
One of the main modern features of this amp is its much higher gain possibilities than a Vintage JTM 45 ., more gain than the JCM 800’s … it’s gain range goes from vintage to modern
If this interview were conducted when the amp was released it might still be in production today. To hear it from the engineer is very helpful. A truly brilliant and useful design with endless tones.

This amp is absolutely fantastic! I've got mine back in 2009 !
Marshall! You guys really really need to relaunch this amp.
More of Steve Dawson, please? 🔥🤘
Just discovered this series. Wow. Love the interview with the engineer! More please highlighting the unsung iconic amp engineers in Marshall history
Steve serviced my old JMP 50 plexi at his workshop in mid 2021. Made an excellent job of it, and an old 100w Lead & Bass transistor head. Doubt I'd trust anyone else with it.
How soon can we see a reissue of this great classic Amp, I hope soon!
Love my Vintage Moderns! Hotrodded JTM45/100 tones. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I’ve got a combo version…fabulous amp!!
Best amp ever!! Still play mine every day 🤟
Really love the interview. It's really cool to hear the story behind a particular design. Maybe something to do more often Marshall?
Just am trying to get one. Seems to have been an underrated masterpiece, whyever. Just discovered it some time ago and I really was positively surprised.
Bring 'em back!
Mr. Gilbert has at least one of them 🤘🏻
Bring this monster back in please
Just got a 2266 a few weeks ago. Gave away the 410h and couldn't be happier.
When I found out that I used only one sound in the jvm, I thought I could also get the (modern) real thing.
It is a bit quirky but that's part of the charme. 😍
I remember this amp getting shit on when it first came out. i always liked it
Great series! I had a VM years ago, but always thought it sounded too ’thick’ for my playing style. Changed too JVM for a while but am a happy 4100 JCM 900 user now; the amp I grew up with.
I bought a 50W head today and will pick it up next Sunday 🤩😎🎸🎶🎵
Great as always Steve
I sold my vintage modern and lasted about 6 months before I had to buy another one. It's a very unique Marshall, definitely not like others in the lineup.
This has always been an outstanding amp👍👍👍👍👍
IMHO, this was the best modern Marshall. I don’t understand why it wasn’t marketed as a flagship model, black tolex and all. You can tell this guy put is heart into this amp, designed for tone-chasers. And he nailed it. The fact that this was discontinued remains puzzling.
Please tell me they're going to reissue these been looking for one for ages!
I have the 2466 (purple), but I once sold it… I later bought it back, because I really do like the amp but I don’t use the reverb on it though
Have a mint 50w 2 12 combo and by far the best marshal tone/identity I have ever had and I've had them from plexi onwards!
Ablsolutely love my 2466. Just need to get a matching cab or 2 now.
Took me 3 years to find the matching cabs. The guy that had my 425a before me told me it took him 5 years to find it. In good shape, of course! I wish you luck on your journey, sir!
Make a 20W version to replace to Origin
Great to hear such a classic with its creator's ideas behind it! Is it a prequel for something?
My 2266 is the one amp I will never sell. It has so much character and versatility. Mine has seen many gigs and will see many more!
I miss my 2266. The one that got away… damn, that combo sounded amazing.
I have one i love it!!!! I use with my mesa triple recto they sound amazing together
Really great video. Im looking for one of these atm funny enough right when you made this. I really love this amp. I need another Marshall 😎
Love this amp. Bought mine for $500. So many different tonal possibilities in it, but you really have to work at it to be rewarded.
Fucking "Studio" version of this PLEASE 😩 My birthday is in August btw 😉
I have a purple 50w head, the jewel light doesn't work and the reverb packed up ages ago but I wouldn't change it for the world. Definitely a tone machine as stated in the video.
Celestion G12 C 16 ohm speakers used in these amps have a 53H1777 cone same as celestion blue alnico nomex paper voice coil and same frame as a Greenback
These speakers sound incredible in open back cabs, not so good in sealed cabs
I own one of the last hand wired ‘73 1987 50watt heads. Guess this Vintage Modern model somehow got by me because I thought this was a promo for something new, lol. Like what I heard. I just may look for one of these for stage use.
Another great interview. Keep these coming.
But, I just got my first strat and now I can’t wait to try it again.
perhaps a 20 watt verson release and a full on reissue?
A combo reissue with a blues breaker style grill please & you got my money without thinking! 🎸👍🎶
Took me a while to find one of these and it is every bit as good as I hoped. Mine is not for sale!
I love my 2266. I do think that it would be better if they had used the footswitch to control the boost; too much going on with the stock set-up. I'll never sell it. Great video.
I own and love this amp !
No mentioning of the mid boost on it. I had a 50W head and it was a great amp.
That’s because it just stays on all the time. Play Marshall, receive mids 😂
@@jacob_miller To me it looks like it’s not on on the Marshall clip. When i had a 50W Vintage Modern head i had the mid boost on most of the time playing a Les Paul. I thought it sounded a bit thin and trebly with it off.
Hey Marshall, make this amp again!!
“Robin Trower uses this amp”…Tells you everything you need to know. Put me down for one!🎸
The only what i did not like about this am was digital reverb. But other then that looks so cool!!!
One of the best Marshall amps ever I own three
Just bough one. Great bang for buck!
Best of Marshall
Why the hell don’t Marshall still make these? I’d buy one in a heartbeat. JVM- too much going on. DSL - make all your guitars sound the same with fuzzy tone. Reissues- too loud. Origins -yuk.
Come on Marshall. It’s time.
People got confused with balancing the two volumes like a jumpered plexi, it probably wasn’t launched the best.
In todays world you send out pre release samples to “influencers”, they do reviews and drop on release day, and everyone knows what to expect and where to go for their type of tone.
The best new era Marshall, by far
I was considering to sell mine 2466...but I' m not sure to be honest!...really great amp!
One of the main modern features of this amp is its much higher gain possibilities than a Vintage JTM 45 ., more gain than the JCM 800’s … it’s gain range goes from vintage to modern
