@@firstlast4516I wish they truly were famous. Sure, they are royalty to us fans, but it's criminal that the widespread public doesn't know who they are. Their music is simply too good to be only known by Indie rock-adjacent folks. I think they truly are the best rock band in North America and their albums are incredibly consistent and good. This isnt subjective: I have friends that absolutely detest indie rock. They hate its pretentiousness they hate the angularness of the songs they hate the snarky lyrics.... When I slip in an always song, say, " not my baby " I just sit and wait for the inevitable point where they turn to me and go who's this? And what KIND of music is this?I really dig this. And usually your music sucks!" Sadly that question is never a satisfying one, bc Alvvays is so unique that there is no other band that sounds anything like them. Even if you melted down every Smiths, My bloody Valentine Cocteau Twins, and Lush album ever produced and melted it into one record, you'd still never have another Alvvays. In this case the sum is much greater than the parts. They're that good. By the way hearing this version of their self-titled album, without the lo fi, muffled production aesthetic reminds me of how incredible their ballads are , and how much I miss hearing the slow hypnotic pull of her voice and the repetitive licks thar Alex lays down when they write ballads. There are none on Blue Rev, and I miss them. Still an astonishing record!
Ilja Gray Well, another band that I find kind of similar to Alvvays, perhaps just because I found it at around the same time, is a band called "Tops". I would listen to their entire album "Picture You Staring" on TH-cam over and over. Also, another band that I really like is called "Twin Sister" (although they have actually since changed their name to "Mr. Twin Sister"). They only really have one LP but they have a bunch of short albums.
Ilja Gray waaves is cool and great live.....i just saw Charly Bliss and Veruca Salt...awesome show....it rocks tho Speedy Ortiz is my favortie. ringo deathstarr and NO JOY ,, and fleeting joys are similar to this.
All these people commenting on the band's perceived attitude when performing live on a radio show should take a moment to consider the courage it takes to perform knowing that at that moment, it's being recorded and broadcast to an audience of thousands you can't see or really interact with. It can be a nerve-wracking experience. I was interviewed twice on a local radio station in my home country, and although each time I was confident on the topic at hand, I found myself overanalyzing my responses, struggling to focus, and generally just feeling awkward. Now imagine a whole band possibly feeling that way.
The Primitives rose to fame when Morrisey wore a Primitives t-shirt at a Smiths gig. The Primitives posted a video of Alvvays covering Crash. Molly Rankin is wearing a Morrisey t-shirt That right there folks is the "circle of life".
KEXP, you guys are the best. I discovered so many great artist since I started following you guys. Love the live performances. Cheryl, you're so awesome, you're my favorite host.
You stole my comment ;) Totaly agree, I discovered so nice stuffs on that's chanel. Who said there is no more good artists these days? Probably people who dont search, or listen always the same shit...
holy crap! when she hit those high notes at 2:37, instant heartstrings pull. I lost a tear into my chicken soup sitting at my desk eating lunch. powerful stuff man
As with Wolf Alice and others, this radio station needs to be recognised for their engineering skills. Like this, reminded me of the Byrds. Will investigate further.
Seen Alvvays 3 times live in Toronto, met Kerri (keys) twice and Molly (singer) once, both very nice in person and they sound incredible live. See Alvvays if you get a chance.
I have to say this. These tracks are better produced, played, recorded and mixed than on the first record. You can hear EVERYTHING. The record is, by comparison, muddy and recorded with little concern for giving each instrument and voice its own aural space.
Returning to this after taking a break because I listened to them so much I got burnt out. I think I could listen to this so many times again that I could get burnt out again. So freakin pleasing. I love the lyrics so much too
This is one of the best KEXP performances, to be fair a lot of them are insane. But this is a band at it's peak... best part is that the peak never ended.
it still kills me that they were playing for free at dundas square, and i didnt bother to go cuz i only knew and liked one song of theirs. After buying the album....sigh. I...i couldve seen them for free!
Just discovered Alvvays today and I'm already hooked! Please come back to San Francisco soon! Beautiful indie jangle and what a gorgeous voice on Molly, eh?
Molly is such a talent! I've had the pleasure to seem them live. They do not disappoint, and gave a great performance. They were also super laid back and chill.
A daily play, I think these live versions of the songs on this cast are superbly produced. The subtle delay in the vocals, channeled guitars, and perfectly flat drums make this 4-song set, a party. The synths are perfectly matched. Very sudsy sound Alvvays pushes out and I love it -
I had their entire discography on repeat for the 6 days I was in Athens Greece and listening to literally any song takes me right back. They were the perfect soundtrack.
My new favorite band, no competition! They sound very 90s i think * in my world thats a very good thing* If you get goosebumps the first time you hear a band it must be a good sign. I heard Plimsoll Punks and was stuck.
So I've been listening to Alvvays for a bit now and I've seen a lot of their live shows on TH-cam and I have to say they are always consistent in their sound and vocals 👍.
maaaaan these guys are really good. I love their recordings but I think they might be even better live - her voice is so pure, the recordings don't do her justice. Plus they have some of the sexiest instruments that I have seen yet on KEXP. Love n respect
I love the first song they played. Great Canadian band. I really like how the singer bounces while she sings so cute. And that guitar she has is beautiful.

It's not my first time listening to this KEXP video. I love how you, ALVVAYS PERFORM and sound better in this performance than in the actual music album when it was released in 2014. I don't know if it's influencing or inspirational, but I really like your first album when it comes down to all the three albums you've released.
I remember seeing them at the Ryman in Nashville opening for the decemberists and thinking “this band is absolutely incredible!” Being a huge fan of the decemberists I admittedly enjoyed Alvvays’s set more.
"Archie" is one of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard, the way she sings it. Gives me the chills every time.
My favourite as well.
I remember the first time I saw the video, I told Kerri they were gonna be famous immediately, it just hit so perfectly.

Alvvays are timeless. Their name makes more sense as the years go on.
I am watching in the year 2023 and I love this video more than anything Elsa on TH-cam
"It's alvvays live on KEXP" and I'm like: of course it's always live!
every time.

Alvvays.
Everytime I think that I have found all of the bands that I'm ever going to love I find a band like this. I cannot get this band out of my mind.
Michael the Magician can you name a few other bands that you love I need some new music to listen to

Bro did you not hear the "streaming world wide on KEXP dot o r g" part?
No thanks, please don't move here! It's already getting more and more crowded enough! Thanks!
her sound is so nostalgic, its kind of emotional in a way.
The Primitives rose to fame when Morrisey wore a Primitives t-shirt at a Smiths gig.

Molly Rankin is wearing a Morrisey t-shirt

holy shit
I didn't know I would read this today 😮
And almost anytime you see Jeff Rosenstock he is wearing an Alvvays shirt and jorts
The head bob at 18:29 melts my heart, every time.
It does indeed!
Perfect pop - immediately nostalgic and personally emotional.

Seconded. Rumrunners in London, ON 2017. Great show!
Most chill band I've seen in a while
I like it that this continuous litany of actual bands just continues to exist somewhere no matter who's paying attention to what or why.
i come back to this session every couple months
When they started I had a hard time believing it was live- it sounds exactly like the recording!
Honestly? It sounds vastly better than the studio recordings to my ears.
A beautiful version of "Party Police". The rest of the set is great as well.
I'm here strictly for that magnificent synth work
I have to say this. These tracks are better produced, played, recorded and mixed than on the first record. You can hear EVERYTHING. The record is, by comparison, muddy and recorded with little concern for giving each instrument and voice its own aural space.
This band will always be remembered to me as the ones whose beautiful music got me through a particularly rough mushroom high.
Only if they knew how much pleasure they bring to my ears
The singer has the most adorable awkward smile. She seems a little nervous. Amazing voice and band! I love them and I've only just discovered them.
They’re quirkiness and occasional nervousness makes them so sweet and sincere!
Finally!! I can't describe how much I love their music!!!!! her voice ♥
Returning to this after taking a break because I listened to them so much I got burnt out. I think I could listen to this so many times again that I could get burnt out again. So freakin pleasing. I love the lyrics so much too
Alvvays channeled the indie rock gods on their latest album with these songs. They keep subtly growing to become one of my favorite bands.
This is one of the best KEXP performances, to be fair a lot of them are insane. But this is a band at it's peak... best part is that the peak never ended.
Also this video gave me such a huge crush on Molly, she's killing it so hard and so effortlessly.
Every time I want to feel great happy I come to this video.
You guys are so cool, you deserve your own cartoon

PLEASE COME TO SF!
The girl on the keys is a grown up version of that nerdy tall girl in the show Recess.
GRETCHEN
inspired by the Marine Girls, or Tracey Thorn?
Damn bro that's so cool
14:59 ... yeeeeeh

Awesome band, the vocals, and that almost surf rock guitar just brings everything home. Too legit.
listening in 2024 and I need to see them live, I need it! most beautiful melodies, takes me to places I've never been
broke in 2015 with this video. lovely music guys.
Molly is such a talent! I've had the pleasure to seem them live. They do not disappoint, and gave a great performance. They were also super laid back and chill.

I had their entire discography on repeat for the 6 days I was in Athens Greece and listening to literally any song takes me right back. They were the perfect soundtrack.

Wow they're wonderful live. This Archie song is my new guilty pleasure :)
There is nothing to be guilty for unless you harm someone.
I think I've found my new fav band!!! Hoping to see them in Leeds, cannot wait for the next album!!!
Wow such a great sound. Never stop KEXP. Never stop guiding me through my journey of music discovery.
i cant die without meeting them all at least once.
So I've been listening to Alvvays for a bit now and I've seen a lot of their live shows on TH-cam and I have to say they are always consistent in their sound and vocals 👍.

I appreciate their song crafting more and more as time goes by... so seemingly simple but so effective and deep on a level.
what a beautiful chords and stuff, really excciting everything, so precoious wow
I'm in love with the lead singer.

They did not perform with a drummer.

KEXP never fails to promote great bands like Alvvays! Keep it up!
This band blows my mind. They're amazing
