Culture Shock in Thailand 🇹🇭 | One Night in Bangkok Podcast Ep. 001 (feat. @jonnyasia)
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 13 พ.ค. 2024
- Welcome to the first episode of the One Night in Bangkok Podcast! In this episode I sit down with Jonny from Jonny There is Something Happening. We chat about moving to Thailand, escaping the craziness of Bangkok, and some of the (potential) downsides of dating a Thai girl. After living in Thailand for over ten years, he offers a bit of a different perspective from the (mostly) new-to-Thailand vloggers on TH-cam. There are over 400 videos on his TH-cam channel, documenting everything from the beautiful beaches, to quiet life in Hua Hin, and the craziness of the bars (and bar girls).
*I noticed a lot of comments asking why I didn't talk to the girls very much. Although it's not apparent in the video, the girls had actually expressed beforehand that they were really nervous/shy so I told them they could just hang out and didn't have to speak unless they wanted to. Just wanted to clear that up. Totally understand what you guys are saying and your points are noted 👍

Nice work mate i wish you all the best with the new channel buddy🙂
Very Good story Jonny, very good , very good.
Thanks for stopping by!
Well done Jonny
let the girls talk mate you did not ask them anything ? why give them a microphone ? one man show
They were very shy but totally understand what you're saying. Thanks for the comment
These girls know if they F up jonny dont like that and will leave them.. Just all the light on him it seems🤣
When you have 3 guests on your broadcast you can’t have two sit in silence. Involve everyone.
right on man i say the samething he has a long way to go if he can not see that
Totally understand. Beforehand they actually expressed that they were really nervous/shy so I told them they didn't have to speak if they didn't want to. But I get what you're saying 👍
Agree - should do it again to hear the other side of the story / experiences.
Trust me, if they wanted to interject, they would have. It's just a personal submissive choice.
Typical Aussie he loves the sound of his own voice
Johnny had enough of Australia... I get that! 😅
Jonny, that laughter of yours is evil and hilarious AF at the same time 😂😂😂
GReat video and interview mate, keep up the good work... audio and video quality immaculate
Thanks for watching. This was only first one and the the next few get better 👍
Very informative interview. Jonny keeping it real as always. Good interview style as well. Looking forward to more
Thanks for watching 🙏
Always fun to see Jonny and Som!
Liked and sub’d. Clearly a lot of effort gone into the studio design, lighting and sound recording. Good interview style as well. Looking forward to more.
Thanks for watching
Totally agree. Looks super professional
Congratulations on ya first podcast . Good job
Thanks for checking it out 🙏
Great Podcast me and the Mrs love ❤️ listening to your concept and Jonny love ❤️ from Australia 🇦🇺 😊
Great to see a different side to Jonny.. Really enjoyed this podcast and looking forward to seeing what’s next
Thanks for checking it out
Best advice ever from jonny ( if a thai girl is hungry feed her )😂 A hungry thai girl can definitely turn into a gremlin 😂😅
Thanks for the video.
I first went to Thailand in 1984, and I have lived in Bangkok and (mainly) Pattaya for a total of around three years over a 25 year period. I’ve been married to a Thai girl for 29 years and like Johnny I live on the Gold Coast in Australia. Over the years I have taught myself Thai and I am proud to say that I am quite proficient in the language. I just wanted to say today, that you (and nearly all Americans) pronounce Pattaya wrong (and with respect, it’s annoying) it’s not just my take on the pronunciation - my wife constantly mentioned that many ‘farangs’ mispronounce the name of the city. The correct pronunciation is (phonetically) ‘Patty-ah’.
Apart from that miss pronunciation (which I just had to send you a message about 😊) I enjoyed your video and I have subscribe to your channel.
Thank you and I’m going to watch all your videos now just to see if you pronounce Pattaya correctly 😂
I’ve never been to Hua Hin, but next trip that’s where I’m heading to Hua Hin, and you never know I might even have a beer with Johnny. 👍
Great set up for a podcast. Number 403 subscriber from Johnny…………….. very good, very good.
Welcome aboard!
Congrats on your new channel. I was hoping for the song in your intro...anyway, best of luck🙏
Thanks for watching 🙏
New sub. I loved the entire interview. I've been a Jonny fan for some time. Cheers Mate. I was married to an Aussie in Burleigh Heads near Surfers Paradise. LOVE THE GOLD COAST.
I'm debating on Thailand or the Philippines to retire. Tough one...
Thanks for the sub! Hope you enjoy the next one
Really enjoyed this chat, hearing firsthand experiences of expats making a successful move provides a good knowledge base for the future
Thanks for watching. Enjoy your trip here
The culture shock took me two days to get over. I was in Pattaya for the first time and it blew my mind, never been anywhere like it. Nowadays, it's great sport to see newbies shocked by what goes on there and try to ge them engaged in the shenanigans. They always thank me for it lol
Someone liking Thailand and Moving to Pattaya is like someone Liking the USA and moving to Las Vegas...lol Doesn't make sense to me but you do you!
Great job for a first podcast! Good luck with the channel...
Thanks so much
Poor ladies never got in a word. Like, why even have them if you're not going to interview them? Listening to dude bro talk sucks.
Noted.
found your channel on instagram. keep up good work. starting at episode one and already a familiar face on the podcast!!
Welcome aboard and hope you enjoy 🙏
What kind of interview is this ?? Can you please involve your other 2 guests ?
Please see description 🙏
Really nice interview. I'll be glad to go through all your videos. I agree 100% with Jonny, don't keep your Thai woman hungry for too long she can turn into a monster if she doesn't get her food on time. Thailand has been good to me for the last 10 years giving me a good Thai wife and three very nice places I can stay, Bangkok, Huahin, and Buengkhan (Isaan).
Thanks for checking it out 🙏
Great Interview...it's a common thing in western countries especially Australia, you're family want you to marry an aussie girl, have kids, work all your life & when you decide to take the 'other road' in life....they don't want to know or help you anymore. I've experienced what Jonny was talking about having issues with his family. People want you to live a certain way just like them...unhappy! I love Thailand 😁🤩
Yep, I am 62 and been free all my life and could write a book about it.Its not ia good place to live at home in the UK, everything is so controlled and negativity all around.Just save for later years and go and travel! Best way to live.Having a family is fine, but it really isnt for everyone, but you have to be out there to meat similar souls.
Hi Eric, great podcast with Jonny , Som and Ying.
So let me start with me. I'm from the UK, I left the country 3 months ago and settled here for good with my Thai girlfriend. I came over here back in 2022, still under covid 19, and still wearing masks and 2 checks of covid within 5 days apart.
Within 1 and half weeks of being here, I said to myself that I'm retiring over here.
What made me change my mind from the UK to Thailand was everything it was just awesome, what Thailand threw I grabbed it and I loved it.The only thing is the heat but I'll get use to it.
My friends told me but you might not like it, I told them what's here in the UK? Everything is expensive the weather is bad and it's not a safe country anymore after gowning up and working all my life.
My money goes a long way here compared to the UK.
But listening to you this country is paradise and safe and the people are down to earth.
I wish you good success with your new channel and I have subscribed as well. All the best and hopefully we bump into each other in Asok or Nana.😊😊😊😊
Agree with everything you say. And don’t worry about your friends. People who haven’t been here just don’t “get it”
Very interesting i shall look forward to Ep 002 😀
Saturday!
Nice podcast mate. Subbed🎉
Welcome aboard!
Awesome - Great Chat
Glad you enjoyed it
Love this guy and his laugh. Found you on peters channel. Me and you are the same age. I’m trying to get to where your at too. Doesn’t look easy. Might need some advice. All the old guys make it sound impossible but you made it sounds like it’s possible so looking forward to more content and info.
Awesome thanks for checking it out 💪
Very informative interview. Jonny keeping it real as always. The tipping culture in US as I understand it mostly because waiting staff are poorly paid.
Good interview, enjoyed it. Johnny came on the YT scene when he started messing with the German youtuber I think from Phuket. Johnny became famous and the German guy disappeared due to all the harassments from trolls.
Great Podcast! I'm moving from California to Nakhon Ratchasima inAustralia and California.
Good first video. Lighting, editing, sound and picture quality are all first rate. Like others, I would have liked you to have involved the ladies a bit more. Good luck with your channel, I'll be watching.
Got it. Thanks for the comment
I have been to Thailand 8 times before 34.What a lovely new channel and Jonny is there. Love listening this stuff. My ex was from Maha Sarakham.I do think Puy Roti Lady is fabulous.
Thanks for watching 🙏
Ive been to thailand something like 30 times in the last 28 years and love it( infact I am going back again next week for a couple of months)Ive had a blast there, really good fun, never had any trouble, but seen some pretty wild goings on.Some of the stories blow your mind.Always be respectful and understanding but be aware of your surroundings. Now, most of the danergous people cannot enter, in the 90's there were loads of characters that you would not want to be alone with.Saying that, I think the 90s were the best time, before 2000.There were nothing like the restrictions and mass tourism you see now. Shop around for the best deals, if on a budget and always carry some extra cash with you for emergencies.
It must have been an amazing time back then!
It was particuarily good becuase there were no camers on phones being used all the time by bloggers who sit there with a coke filing everyone. Yes, was MUCH better. The music was LOUD and the bars were mad houses. Now it's pretty sane and expensive and a bit of a rip off, too many tourists.@@OneNightinBangkok_
Som and Ying need to hold it together next time and not be so loud and obnoxious.
jk haha
Good talk 😎👍
Great listen
Thanks for checking it out
Hey Eric watched your Ma hon song trip ages ago great road did it in my partners car after we took a trip up to Chang Rai from her place in Sa Kaeo province last April hope to do it on a bike one day (mad motorcycle lover) when I can convince her to move back to Thailand from Australia. 🙄
It's an awesome experience. I'm sure you would love it on a bike!
Would love to see: World of Oni, Roberto Vs the World, Geofrey Peterson would be cool to see on a podcast!
Thanks for the suggestions 👍
Definitely GP. He is really great. @@OneNightinBangkok_
Great interview guys you all talked a lot about everything really specialty Jonny living in the different areas , good stuff
Thanks for checking it out!
There is a channel similar to your idea that already exists, it's called 30 and A Wake Up. But he hasn't posted consistently in the last year. At one point he was based out of Thailand and has a Thai Elite Visa. He's now doing cruise ships.
Interesting, I'll check it out
Yep like all the other comments it was more a "boys chat" needed to include the girls a lot more and would definitely get more views, and spot on Jonny "if a Thai woman is hungry you better feed here asap" the other one I have learned being married to a Thai woman for 10 years is don't let a Hungry Thai woman order food because you will get way to many dishes lol. but was a good chat but maybe a bit long cheers hope you have success and many more video's
Yup thanks for the comment
Jonny is the best.
His story on asok reminds me when i ordered a motobike grab and it took me and loke 35/40 minutes on the bike and i could've walked to where inwas going in ten minutes. I was pissed. I wasnt aware of the one ways and didnt think traffic was that bad. Didnt want to walk in the heat
I think we all have this kind of experience here 😂
The tipping culture in the U.S. differs from much of the world because the hourly wage for service staff is quite low here. In Rhode island for example the minimum wage for tipped staff is $3.89 per hr., $2.13 in Texas and 13 other U.S. states. In other countries the servers wages are higher and are worked into the plate cost of the meal. So yeah leave a %20 tip.
Great interview good luck on growing the channel.
BTW there is no link to Ying's channel.
I'm actually also from Rhode Island (Cranston) 🤣 The hourly wage for tipped staff is so abysmal exactly because of the expected tipping culture. Imagine if staff got a real hourly wage and then "earned" tips on top of it. Anyway thanks for watcing!
@@OneNightinBangkok_here in Australia minimum wage for wait staff is $26.95 an hour. Hence why the tipping culture is not a prerequisite.
Granted the cost of living is higher than the US, and the exchange rate is poor relative to the US. From things like Netflix to alcohol the wages need to account for the higher costs. Still when you factor everything in you can get by with a higher standard of living on a lower income as public transport and quality of food is much better. Plus government assistance like free health, rent assistance, pensions for unemployed etc. More socialist than America.
I have a couple nieces that work as waitresses in “fine cuisine” restaurants in the USA and they prefer the tipping because they receive way more than the average minimum wage in the USA which is $7.25 per hour. I personally hate being told what to tip (20%+) at restaurants or even at places such as a hair salon. I want to give 10% if I want to- not being told the amount.
The best questions start with, Who, What, When, Where and How and then go deeper by probing with the same starter words as they respond. Use Why sparingly. “Why” can cause people to become defensive. Consider a mock interview with all your guests using a few questions each to see how they respond. Provide coaching to improve their performance but If they sit silently or are too timid, don’t let them participate. You did very good by not asking double and triple barreled questions (e.g. How do you like Thailand? Where did you go first? What was your favorite experience? All questions asked at once before allowing your quest to answer). You also had a good ratio of you taking vs your guests. A good target is 70% them and 30% you.
Thank you for the comment 🙏
The most legitimate ive seen you in your video's Jonny Boi. Hahhaha
Am I stupid?
Living in Calif with a Thai wife and brought her daughter too. Married over 5 years. Never had an argument. Best soulmate for me
Nope. You’re a lucky guy
Thumbs up 👍
Jonny, 2 girls sitting there saying SFA - come on your better than that !!
Agree on the merry go round shit, done it and cashed out ready to live life in peace and solitude travelling the world but need a base that is affordable and central- Hua Hin is on the cards!
Only small tips- the yanks are stupid on tipping in their country and carry on globally - no way!
I’ve been thinking of doing something similar to this for a year now! Congrats on beating me too it lol. #subbed
I've been planning this all for a long time. Finally got off my ass and made it happen. We already have 8 episodes filmed so I'm excited to see where it goes.
Yay I kinda agree i
would have liked to hear from Sam and Ying. Jonny and you were the only ones talking which made the podcast rather boring. i’m wondering if jonny was drunk? I think if you would have asked the ladies questions they’d probably engage. Keep doing great podcasts.
Ladies were shy so I didn't want to pressure them. Jonny wasn't drunk - he's just... jonny 😂
New Sub From Jonny
Awesome, thanks for checking it out
oskars i went to that party as well , OMG the best bar in soi 11, and thats a fact ,great food , good australian red wine , and the dirtiest beats late at nite
Personally, it's one of my favorite places in Bangkok, especially because their kitchen is open late.
Interesting 👍
Thanks for the visit
I have had a thai partner for 5 years she is an Australian citizen been here 16 years but I cant get her to move back to Thailand where id like to retire and live like a king instead of a pauper in Australia. 🙁
Haha. I sent a email to thai talk with dan. Ive had 30 trips to thailand. His viewers didnt believe me because i never got taken. People are absolutely stupid.
Im 61, my wife is 39 and already owned a home in Chiangmai when i met her. I’ll be in thailand feb 1 through the 26th. See you guys then.
also.... Love the Food Channel!
Good podcast 👏 huge fan of @jonnyasia 🙏
Thanks for checking it out!
Look how respectful and pleasant the Women are here compared to a podcast like fresh & fit or Soscast.
Night and day difference. Renew your passport brothers!
Agree 1,000% 🔥
Gee guys, give him a break it was his first podcast, I thought he did well, at around 18.45 he asks Som a question and to pull the microphone closer to her, she had a bit of a giggle (I saw the joke) but then seemed a bit shy and didn't want to speak, so he didn't push it, he was being nice and at about 36, the other girl was asked questions, I think the girls were both shy and left most of it to the guys. Well done mate and as usual, Jonny is always easy to listen to
Thank you
Agree totally Thomas if they dont want to talk dont push them. Som never saids much on Jonnys channel either .
Comeon, everyone knows whats the main reason to go to Thailand. 😇
The temples, obviously. "Temples"
@@OneNightinBangkok_ Many have converted to the 'Thighland' religion... :-)
First😂
welcome :)
jonny your best part of thailand is sitting right next to you.
The girls are props!
It's only USAians that think Asia is synonymous with China, just like they think America is synonymous with USA.
Everybody else know that Asia is the largest and most populated continent containing everything from Türkiye and Россия to Singapore and Brunei.
Also the tipping in USA is silly, just get a proper wage instead! A tip in the rest of the world is an bonus if you feel they provided good service.
Yea I agree. I think it’s partly because the US is so physically disconnected from the rest of the world.
You should not let Ying go such a class act..even when you are talking about their country and the negative side they sat politly ! which i think i would have expected them to say positive things and rebuff the stupid things that foreigners have in their preconcieved notions of Thailand...
Yes, she is a class act. I think we are all aware of our own country's short-comings and often discuss it with each other, so it's really no secret between us.
Great video but let’s the girls relax and talk.
Noted. thanks
You're in ASIA ! Why would you feel uncomfortable in Ekkamai ?
How are u staying in Thailand for 4-8 at 40 or 30? What Visa?
Not a simple answer unfortunately

My advice after 30+ years is to avoid most Farangs, they're generally speaking full of BS, Jonny being an exception, he's a sound guy. Some of my most reliable and best friends are Thai.
Sum is super pretty and Jonny is soooo hot! Love you guys!

gteat interview
thanks for watching
Came off as rude that you just chatted to the white guy.
Yea, I can see why you (and some others) are making that point. As I mentioned to another commenter, the girls actually expressed to me beforehand that they were very nervous and so I told them they could just hang out and didn't have to speak if they didn't want to. I didn't want to pressure them but I understand that's not clear if you just watch the video
first
enjoy!
@@OneNightinBangkok_nice one 😊
Som doesn't look very comfortable is she unwell?
She's fine, just nervous since this kind of thing was new for her.
There are a lot of keyboard warriors around (aholes is another word) don't let them get to you just carry on doing what your doing as its just jealousy
Thanks for the comment 🙏
I only had a $ 100 , so I booked a flight. Oh and by the way I own and fiberglass company that works on superyachts. Come on Jonny .
I think you misunderstood…
He said the airline told him it would only be $100 to change his flight.
Airbnb is currently illegal to operate in Thailand.
False information. “Short term rentals” are illegal (and it’s rarely enforced).
@@OneNightinBangkok_ Technically speaking, renting out properties on Airbnb in Thailand is illegal. The Thai government has not yet formulated specific laws or regulations pertaining to the sharing economy or short-term rentals. Here are some key points:

62old guy lost money? I think the older you get you just become lonely . When thirties and won't happen to him
Those girls were completely ignored...
The US is the worse place for tipping they don't pay their staff minimum wage so expect the customers to top them up
Yea but the question is - WHY don’t they pay their staff at least minimum wage 🤔
Enjoyed the conversation but the body language between the girls was uncomfortable to watch 🤷♂️
🤷♂️
If you're in 20 to 30s u go to Pattaya or Bangkok , if you're in 40s or above u go to Hua Hin 😅 😊
So many vloggers but always the same old subjects round and round. Never seen one cover the best of Thailand- the music. Street food, bar girl stories and ex pat life have been done to death. Religion is another ignored topic yet music and religion make up most of Thai culture.
Link me to your channel and I’d love to watch these topics 👍
I'm not American and even I know that the twenty percent tip makes up most of the poor waitresses wage. America is the WORST, They don;t look after their poor or educate them for free, You need to have money to be someone who makes money. Skint with nothing but ambition? You are screwed
You don't know much about America tbh. Waitresses who get paid with tips usually do quite well compared to people working min wage jobs. As far as education, frequently places with the worst results spend the most on public schools, so the poor are looked after, coddled actually, but still fail to succeed despite massive handouts.
Agree. The situation in America is more complicated than many outsiders can see. Like you said, it's often the areas/groups that get the most that end up performing the worst.
Please stop saying Hooa Hin. It's Hwa Hin. Hua means Head, Hin means Stone. There's probably a big rock somewhere that looks like a head. It drives me crazy. If you live in Thailand, learn to pronounce the name of where you live. I live i Loei Province, in Isaan. My nearest neighbor is 2 kilos away.
You must be really fun at parties.
You talk too much old boy!
Ask questions - Johnny's input was interesting & entertaining! Unfortunately, your input was boring! Hope you learn & thing's get better in future video's?
Aussies have a bad reputation for being cheap charlies
Haven’t heard that one yet
Your interview/questions are really wierd and dry. And you're interviewing yourself 1/2 the time.....
Meanwhile, Som and Ying are just twittling their thumbs... sitting there and not part of the interview...
Oh...
NYC has 8M..... 2021
Bangkok 10M...2021
Note: Som is so forgiving of Jonnys misbehaving. My Thai GF here would have a BIG problem with a lot of things he does. They can get REALLY jealous....
Btw... Pattaya, Phuket or Bangkok is NO comparison to Hua Hin.
If Pollution, traffic, and high prices are not your thing.... then come to Hua Hin...
Hua Hin is especially green and relaxing. Slower is a negative connotation. My friend was going to bangkok and Pattaya for years but now visits me here, and prefers Hua Hin for its uniqueness.
Don't be fooled, Hua Hin is where Thai Royalty vacation.
Retirement is excellent here... 👌

Plenty of pollution in Hua Hin. I was just there and the air quality was disgusting
Why did you have 3 guests and only talk to to one of them. Some of those questions like how can you keep a Thai woman happy should absolutely have been asked to the 2 woman. The interview was OK talking with Johnny but you failed not involving actual Thai woman with some of the questions........
Totally understand your point. As I mentioned to another commenter, the girls actually expressed to me beforehand that they were very nervous and so I told them they could just hang out and didn't have to speak if they didn't want to. I understand that's not obvious from the video but just wanted to clear that up
I love how a woman who works really hard like Puy Roti lady can have 500,000 YT subscribers as well as a great food network. She amazes' me. The lady also gives back to Monks and the poor.
