Thanks for sharing this video. I went to Laos earlier this year for 10 days and it's all I can think about now. I have never experienced such a place. The food was wonder, the nature was great but it was the people that stood out most for me. I've planned a trip to Vietnam for early next year but I can't help but think that the best thing for me to do at this point of my life would be to move to South East Asia...
I went to Vietnam last month. Love it there too! It's a beautiful region. You can always rent an inexpensive place for 6 months and travel around a bit. Highly recommend that approach!
I'm also Thai who had been living abroad in the USA for half of my life. I was raised in the Mid Atlantic and New England region, commonly known as the Northeast Coast, right in the heart of the early establishment of the American Revolutionary War. The USA and Canada share the similar western value, except one shows the patriotism and the other shows the loyalism. I also moved back to my country since 2009, thus I can also relate with your list of reasons to why settling in Thailand should be the right choice. 1.) Thailand is the land of smiles and also known as the land of the compromise to be humble, merciful, and indirect. In contrary, the American culture (speaking from my own experience) is more confronting to be arrogant, stubborn, and upfront whenever the conflict becomes their business. 2.) Thailand's GDP compromises the low cost of living, although the cost-push inflation tends to escalate through time. The Thai currency also deflates its value against other western currencies, thus the expectation to the cheap cost of living in the 90's is long gone. Thailand is still affordable for a legitimate traveler and no longer so for a backpacker (In some cases, becomes a begpacker when they go bust). 3.) Thailand's weather is stable all year round. In fact, the monsoon season is the right moment for the Thai farmer to harvest crops and plow a paddy field. The Thai natural resource is also abundant all year round, the greenhouse farming is not necessary to the Thai environment. In contrary, most area becomes a dead zone throughout the North American Continent whenever the snow or hail storm hits the ground with the temperature that goes minus zero. (As you said earlier, the weather is brutal when your location is situated at the edge of the earth) 🙂 P.S. The word "Mai Pen Rai (ไม่่เป็นไร)" is actually "let bygones be bygones", if I would put this Thai phrase into the direct American idiom.
I did not expect the full-blown discussion to go viral over a simple Thai phrase "Mai Pen Rai (ไม่เป็นไร)". It was the pleasure debate for me to realize one's perspective to look at situations from all angles. @thebangkokguide : First and foremost, I must do the honors to reply to the host. You are an observant traveler to be fully aware about the visited country. Different countries have different perspective in their social etiquette. @Eoghan-hs2wz : Yes, let bygones be bygones is to forgive and forget about past offenses and conflicts. Mai Pen Rai can also be used in a broad variety of situations to dissolve the conflict in general. Thailand is best known for a non-confrontational country, so I use the English idiom "let bygones be bygones" to cover the general meaning in the way of the Thai culture. @yaiburanakul8505 : Mai Pen Rai also covers the meaning of "No big deal" or "No Problem" in everyday situation. The best compromise for the English idiom is "just let it slide". @kusonsin : Mai Pen Rai can also gives the meaning of "It's okay, no worries" in everyday situation. The best compromise for the English idiom is "I'll cut you a slack".
Enoyed your video Cal. Would be good to also hear how you are able to stay in Thailand immigration wise and also what type of work you are doing and how you support yourself.
i wish thailand would open opportunities for nurses. would love to work there and maybe transfer there for good. i went once and never stopped thinking about thailand
I agree with 90% of what you say however air pollution in BKK made me to leave this city after 3 weeks. it's simply very unhealthy environment and i decided to move south. Even super beautiful Chiang Mai during the burning grass season turns into a Mad Max city:)
Your timing was perfect I’m sure being in Thailand 🇹🇭 during the pandemic 😷 was alot better control wise compared to the wacky control rules of Canada or US. Great video cheers mate

Not just you brother, I been living in Sydney for 29 years now im planning to moving back for to Thailand is my home and the country I love the most by 2026 I will moving back for good to Thailand , I see more opportunities in Thailand to have my own Bakery .
For me in the next 10 yrs we gonna see the biggest migration from to East side of the world in our history due to the cost of living in the west is crazy expensive like hell. Sydney is the world 2nd most expensive city on earth now.
Hi Cal, I really enjoyed watching your video. Great work and mindset imo! I just subscribed and will watch a view of your other videos. In November I will move to Thailand for at least 18 months. Looking very forward to that... 😃 Cheers from Germany, Matthias
Speaking from Belgium here, I work from home for the federal government. This means I still do have to go to the office occasionally, basically just to show that you’re still alive or something along the lines. This also means our work’s VPN is set to Belgium. If I could bypass this I could work from Thailand haha. Yet a better solution would be a remote job which allows me to work from Thailand. Yet I can’t find any opportunities yet 😢
Yeah, this seems to still be pretty standard...remote work, but with location requirements to prevent people from moving to a different country. Need to keep looking!
If you can take a "SABBATICAL Working leave".. why not? Just check with your VPN provider if they can operate from Thailand. Just check the UPlink/Downlink specs to see if that can match , prices etc: Phuket speed is " 7.58 Mbps download and 2.66 Mbps upload speeds" Means you need to get to "work" by 15:00 hrs phuket time -- 🙂
This is a very good sharing of living in Thailand as a foreigner. Bangkok always excels as the top choice for a second home for many expats compared with other cities thanks to the inclusive cluture, kind people, trully international connections, and low cost of living! While only three shortcomings: traffic, air quality in dry season and water.
I lived in usa for 6years n Canada for 1year. I have visited Thailand 3 times. Currently I live in india. I absolutely agree with your points. I love the fact that Thai follow 'leave everyone alone not intrude in other's lives' ...❤❤❤❤
I was really amazed how much better WiFi and cell service has improved there over the last 10 years. First time I went there it wasn’t very good but now it’s really impressive. Even taking a boat ride to Koh Lipe last year we had service the entire way.
@@thebangkokguide It’s impressive. Really shows the potential of the country, if only they could have some political stability. Thailand could be a powerhouse in Asia.
Totally love the mindset in many Asian countries from East-Asia and SE-Asia. It resonates much more with what I want in life than the western mindset. Cost of living, internet, quality of hospitals and crime rate reduces my choices to a few possible countries and Thailand comes out on top.
I love the snow though, as I'm not to hot weather. Mind you we had +32C the summer just now. Born in Thailand, raised in Sweden and currently living in the UK
I am German and I have visited Thailand and also Bangkok for 3 weeks at beginning of 2020 right before covid, together with my husband. It was the most wonderful holiday of our lifes and we keep thinking about it very often!! We honestly don‘t see my future in germany anylonger, I can‘t stand how people think and behave here, I don‘t like the weather during 80% of the year 🙈 as we want to have kids soon we are thinking about how and when we do the ,drastic change‘ and leave the country, I don‘t see it as a no-go to have move with little kids but of course it will make it a little bit more difficult 🫣
It sounds like a nice plan. It can be much more challenging with kids due to education and healthcare costs. I’ll be uploading a video later today that covers some of the longer term difficulties that expats have to give a more balanced perspective.
Ya I’m from Vermont just little below the border by dunem Quebec ! Want to go on vacation there within the next 2/3 years and possibly check it out to figure out a way to move life over there myself
Damm bro, i dint even know, that i have seasonal affective disorder, i had no idea, that was a thing...i also live in country, where there is winter almost half a year, i always hated, when summer was over and 6 months of hell are ahead, for the past 10 years i wanted to move to a tropical country, but there was always something. But now im finally moving to thailand in 3 weeks, could not be more happy now, and cant wait to get there...just a dream come true.
excellent video, we live in Penticton BC, and are planning to move to Hua Hin next year, we are going to set everything up this winter, then rent out our townhouse, we should clear $2,000 CAD from that, we should have a great life in Thailand on that amount, in 5 years we can get our Canada pensions. Love your honest video, after 7 trips to Thailand I agree with everything you say about Thailand and Canada, I love Canada, but it is not the same country as it was when I was growing up, luckily I have no mortgage, that is HUGE but still the winters here are horrible, I want great weather all year around!!!
Ironic to see lots of Weaterners complain about the living standards in Europe and many vying to settle in Thailand whereas it’s a reverse for Thai people, most Thais would move to US, Canada, Europe in a heartbeat.
This is true. It really depends on each situation in terms of the best possible scenario. Minimum wages in western countries are much higher, along with benefits. I don’t dislike western countries…there are lots of opportunities there as well; although I think some of the comparative advantages are shifting.
Cal, can I connect with you more as a fellow Canadian and on the brink of dropping everything in Canada and moving to Thailand with my wife and 2 kids. Please 🙏
I think the biggest problem is to get a job. I am from Switzerland and really want to move to Thailand but i have not idea how. I work in an office since 10 years but they dont offer remote work and my english is not on a business english level. Next year i go for 2 month holiday to Thailand, really looking forward to it.
Great video ................. 2024 I am planning to retire in HuHin buying small condo then buying 4x4 drive right through Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore & Vietnam
Sir, I am inviting you to visit the south just in case you need sometimes traveling. I’m here in Pattani Province having lots of English speaking friends. Plus, you might be amazed how beautiful the places in the south really are.
Thank you. This would be my biggest issue with living here…and it’s a big one. We are entering pollution season now and everytime it starts it makes me rethink things.
I realized I can travel (slowly) cheaper than I can stay in my house here in Florida. Hell, my electric bill has been over $600 a month this summer. I’m selling the house and leaving the US. Everything is too expensive.
Great insight , I am Polish originaly so I can see your point about living 6months in winter conditions, moved to south America but surprisingly things are very expensive there transport is basic and levels of crime are of another level. I am surprised to learn that Thailand is rather safe place with modern infrastructure. Arent you bother by the fact that you are always going to be a foreigner because of your looks? I am tall with blue eyes and no matter how hard I tried to blend in I was always treated different better or worse. Know people from UK where Inlive now that ate working flat out for 6 months and then going to Philippines to spend winter there. With average energy bill almost £2000 per year you are better off spensing 500 on flight and 200 on flat per month in Asia
Thanks for the comment. Personally, I have come to embrace just being an outsider in the society. It comes with some advantages. There aren’t really any societal or cultural expectations, so the expat community is kindof free to create its own little mini culture within the bigger culture. It can be freeing. It’s definitely something that people need to embrace if they plan to live in Thailand, or any ethnically defined state.
Good stuff, Cal. I actually showed this to my parents as to why I'm living here lol. As you know being an expat, sometimes you'll get a lot of WTFs from the folks back home haha.
@@donjohnson5123 That's honestly true. I've had to accept that me and thai people are not cut from the same cloth. Unless I'm going to go 100% on language/culture it's a joke to call nmyself an expat.

Everything's price in US has gone to the roof. They don't manufacture much these days and import most good from other countries. In Portland, Oregon, there are plenty of spaces outside of city, but they can't build houses due to zoning. They can't build apartment building in some neighborhood. Building houses are also too expensive. They also take a long time to build house or fix road. It takes like 2 years and they still can't finish expanding a short highway. US has severe housing shortage. Medical cost is also crazy. The countries is run by some super rich guys.
As Thai myself, I agree with most you said. However, be aware that though here is quite safe, it is not that all safe. You should still be careful in moderation. Crime and bully exist here, but not a lot in general.
You compare that with big cities in Western😂🤣. Here in the West there are hood( ghetto) in some part of the big cities and crime are crazy. Its comparable with War torn countries.
My mother was able to raise 3 sons and her extended family and live comfortably by purely living off of my father's German pension that was transferred to her upon his death. We weren't hood-rich, but it was comfortable (now that i'm an adult, it's no longer comfortable, for me at least😂). It wasn't much either 40k bahts per month, but it was more than enough for Thailand. Especially out in a random countryside. If Westerners thinks BKK and big cities of Thailand's cheap already. Try going out of it, it can be even cheaper.
I agree. From Calgary here. Everything here is super expensive now. Cost of living is insane. Housing price is crazy. Mortgage is crazy. Many people are just living paycheck to paycheck. No life... Health care system is the worst. Three hours wait time just to get admitted at a hospital.
10:05... This isn't new. There have been digital nomads for at least the last 20 years. I won't even bring up the soldiers that stayed in Vietnam and Thailand since the Vietnam war to my knowledge.
I want to live in Thailand , but so far I dont find a way how to earn enough money there to make a Living. I cant take Germany anymore and there is nothing more I want then living in Thailand 😔
Surely the influx of people on western salaries will eventually have a detrimental effect on local real estate prices leading to the problems of inequality that other large cities have? Look at London for example where the influx of property buyers from Russia, Middle East and China has caused prices to rocket pushing the locals out into the suburbs.
Actually there is probably a need for more people on higher salaries as the condo market was massively overbuilt, based heavily on speculation linked more closely to Chinese investment. Currently most buildings are half empty and the whole property market could easily crash and cause a financial crisis. It’s a different situation as there isn’t a scarcity of supply here and local laws limit foreign ownership.
The only place where I see that there is a high concentration of western foreigners is Pattaya. Bangkok is huge. We are a blip in the population. I think the biggest concern is with regard to Chinese investment. The condo market, as mentioned, is overbuilt but a certain segment of that is targeted towards wealthy investors and the Chinese are a large part of those investors.
I came here to the ‘Land of Smiles’ in 1995 and stayed... still the best thing I have ever done!
Long time! Cheers!

Thanks for the kind words. I find the community orientation makes life much more enjoyable... it's something that is just missing in most colder climate cultures!
I’m Thai and currently living in Arizona . I was born and raised in Bangkok then immigrated to the U.S. I miss Bangkok every day. And I will definitely retired in Bangkok ♥️♥️♥️♥️ please upload your video more often. Love watching your video
Thanks for the kind words! I hope life is treating you well over in Arizona too!
why dont you just go back now, whats holding you back ?
@@madXtremo now I’m working at the Bank needs to build up experience then can move back to Thailand heavenly 🤣
Bangkok is doped.
(As you said earlier, the weather is brutal when your location is situated at the edge of the earth) 🙂
P.S. The word "Mai Pen Rai (ไม่่เป็นไร)" is actually "let bygones be bygones", if I would put this Thai phrase into the direct American idiom.
Mai pen rai also means "no big deal" or "no problem".
@@Eoghan-hs2wz oh I understand this but the spirit of the phrase is also like saying no big deal or no problem.
Thanks for the input and good analysis of each country! It's interesting to spend time in different countries as it gives us a whole new perspective!
To add to 'MaiPenRai' also means 'Its Ok, Don't Worry!"
Thanks! I'm working on a video about my life currently as well, so that should be coming soon! Cheers
So what visa are you currently on?
@@AnimalJusticeEmergency I’m currently on a work visa. I working on a video explaining visas currently.
i wish thailand would open opportunities for nurses. would love to work there and maybe transfer there for good. i went once and never stopped thinking about thailand
Yes, nursing is a protected profession…actually salaries can be relatively low and a lot of nurses move to western countries!
For nurses, maybe you can try to search jobs in Singapore :)
Love your research in supporting text in the video. I can tell that you're a good teacher. Hope you're lucky and happy every day in Thailand :D
Thank you for your kind words 🙏😊
I agree with 90% of what you say however air pollution in BKK made me to leave this city after 3 weeks. it's simply very unhealthy environment and i decided to move south. Even super beautiful Chiang Mai during the burning grass season turns into a Mad Max city:)
I agree. The air pollution is one of the biggest downsides to living here. Chiangmai in burning season is next level!
Your timing was perfect I’m sure being in Thailand 🇹🇭 during the pandemic 😷 was alot better control wise compared to the wacky control rules of Canada or US. Great video cheers mate
Thanks! Yeah, I agree. That was a really interesting time here... I think it definitely compared favorably against Canada or the US!

Not just you brother, I been living in Sydney for 29 years now im planning to moving back for to Thailand is my home and the country I love the most by 2026 I will moving back for good to Thailand , I see more opportunities in Thailand to have my own Bakery .
I can definitely see a demand for bakeries in Thailand. Welcome back! It’s definitely a great place!
@@thebangkokguide last year I went back to Thailand still hardly any western style of bread in Thailand.
Definitely correct, and there is a very high demand.
For me in the next 10 yrs we gonna see the biggest migration from to East side of the world in our history due to the cost of living in the west is crazy expensive like hell. Sydney is the world 2nd most expensive city on earth now.
LOL a bakery? Comonnnn
Hi Cal, I really enjoyed watching your video. Great work and mindset imo! I just subscribed and will watch a view of your other videos. In November I will move to Thailand for at least 18 months. Looking very forward to that... 😃

Just check the UPlink/Downlink specs to see if that can match , prices etc: Phuket speed is " 7.58 Mbps download and 2.66 Mbps upload speeds"
Means you need to get to "work" by 15:00 hrs phuket time -- 🙂
we will always love Thailand 🥰
Definitely! Great place
Welcome to Thailand. 🙏🏻
Thank you!
ยินดีต้อนรับสู่ประเทศไทยครับ😊
Thank you!
You definitely sum it up well. Great place to live!
I lived in usa for 6years n Canada for 1year.
I have visited Thailand 3 times.
Currently I live in india.
I absolutely agree with your points.
I love the fact that Thai follow 'leave everyone alone not intrude in other's lives' ...❤❤❤❤
Yeah me too.. it really differs from the current culture in western countries. Cheers!
I’m a Canadian and left 2 years ago. Dubai resident now for tax reasons. But travel pretty much full time. In BKK now.
Yeah I’ve heard Dubai is very good for that! Very easy travel from there as well.
❤ Nice to hear you are happy in Thailand ,wellcome you and hope u have a good everyday in my country❤

Great insight mate, would love to see that country soon.
Definitely highly recommended!
I was really amazed how much better WiFi and cell service has improved there over the last 10 years. First time I went there it wasn’t very good but now it’s really impressive. Even taking a boat ride to Koh Lipe last year we had service the entire way.
The infrastructure here has improved extremely rapidly. When I was back in Canada it felt very dated.
@@thebangkokguide It’s impressive. Really shows the potential of the country, if only they could have some political stability. Thailand could be a powerhouse in Asia.
I agree...although they will face a demographic crash here in the coming decade, along with much of Asia.
ขอบคุณที่เลือกประเทศไทยครับ 🥰
Thank you so much!
Great video, i going to Thailand in Nov, will see i plan to retiring, from Canada.
Good plan. Lots of people come here for retirement, so it's very easy to find a good community of friends.
Totally love the mindset in many Asian countries from East-Asia and SE-Asia. It resonates much more with what I want in life than the western mindset. Cost of living, internet, quality of hospitals and crime rate reduces my choices to a few possible countries and Thailand comes out on top.
I agree. Cheers!
I love the snow though, as I'm not to hot weather. Mind you we had +32C the summer just now. Born in Thailand, raised in Sweden and currently living in the UK
I love skiing too. I miss that, and need to go for a trip again soon! I have family in the UK too.

Very good and differentiated explanation, thank you!
Cheers! Thanks for the kind words!
Ya I’m from Vermont just little below the border by dunem Quebec ! Want to go on vacation there within the next 2/3 years and possibly check it out to figure out a way to move life over there myself
Very close to Canada. I’d recommend just getting a 6 month multiple entry visa and getting a 6 month condo lease and bouncing around a bit.
Yeah was always similar for me… good luck with the move!
You definitely nailed it! It is an amazing, true, and informative video🙏🙏🙏
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words!
excellent video, we live in Penticton BC, and are planning to move to Hua Hin next year, we are going to set everything up this winter, then rent out our townhouse, we should clear $2,000 CAD from that, we should have a great life in Thailand on that amount, in 5 years we can get our Canada pensions. Love your honest video, after 7 trips to Thailand I agree with everything you say about Thailand and Canada, I love Canada, but it is not the same country as it was when I was growing up, luckily I have no mortgage, that is HUGE but still the winters here are horrible, I want great weather all year around!!!
It makes a huge difference. That sounds like a good plan! Wish you good luck preparing the move 😊
🙏🙏🙏 Thank you so much for love and come to travel of my Thailand country 🤟🤟🙏🙏

Hello! Definitely a big decision! I try to answer questions but sometimes get a bit busy as my schedule is kindof crazy lol

Phuket has better air quality…basically anywhere in the south is better
I miss Thailand so much and told my husband that we will retire in Thailand!

I think the biggest problem is to get a job. I am from Switzerland and really want to move to Thailand but i have not idea how. I work in an office since 10 years but they dont offer remote work and my english is not on a business english level. Next year i go for 2 month holiday to Thailand, really looking forward to it.
I agree. This can be difficult. Even if you don’t work, the visa becomes the problem 😅
very good presentation, especially the contrast to western life.

I realized I can travel (slowly) cheaper than I can stay in my house here in Florida. Hell, my electric bill has been over $600 a month this summer. I’m selling the house and leaving the US. Everything is too expensive.
With Florida property markets, you could probably set it up as a rental and easily living off the rental income as well!
The people in Thailand are awesome but the extreme climate is difficult in my humble opinion.
Personally I find my home climate to be more extreme…not a big fan of cold lol!
I've been in Chiang Mai for 6+ years. Love it here. But absolutely HATE driving here!
Haha yeah, I definitely agree with that! Miss the relaxed driving in Canada.

Yeah we have similar problems in Canada…don’t build housing
Great video and pleasant on the eye.

As Thai myself, I agree with most you said. However, be aware that though here is quite safe, it is not that all safe. You should still be careful in moderation. Crime and bully exist here, but not a lot in general.
True. It's important to always be careful!
You compare that with big cities in Western😂🤣. Here in the West there are hood( ghetto) in some part of the big cities and crime are crazy. Its comparable with War torn countries.
Yeah you really need to watch where you go in big western cities. I never feel like that in Bangkok.
hey Cal, im gonna move now and be a professor like you!

Welcome to Thailand is so beautiful and foods is so good.
Thank you! It definitely is!
Love to see people share the vdo to living in Thailand 🇹🇭 . I jealousy people can stay long time in Thailand 😅.
Maybe you can move too!
I could rent you out my downtown Montreal condo and probably live out of that alone in Thailand lol... can't wait to go back.
You definitely could!
Yeah, I bet. I've heard the costs are much lower. It sounds quite nice!
@@thebangkokguide like 30 baht compare to 50-80 baht in the city, it basically a steal at that price.

I agree. From Calgary here. Everything here is super expensive now. Cost of living is insane. Housing price is crazy. Mortgage is crazy. Many people are just living paycheck to paycheck. No life... Health care system is the worst. Three hours wait time just to get admitted at a hospital.
That was my experience when I was back there a few years ago…prices up, quality down… it wasn’t very appealing to stay!
I can’t wait to move to Thailand
Great place!
10:05... This isn't new. There have been digital nomads for at least the last 20 years. I won't even bring up the soldiers that stayed in Vietnam and Thailand since the Vietnam war to my knowledge.
Good point. I agree that there has always been a version of this type of person that chooses to move or travel. It evolves with the times!
I want to live in Thailand , but so far I dont find a way how to earn enough money there to make a Living. I cant take Germany anymore and there is nothing more I want then living in Thailand 😔
You should look at online options. I’ll be covering how to make money in Thailand in a video soon…it’s definitely an important topic. Cheers
Surely the influx of people on western salaries will eventually have a detrimental effect on local
real estate prices leading to the problems of inequality that other large cities have?
I agree with that assessment.
Welcome to Thailand, land of smile.
Thank you!
The West is peak and the East have more room to grow. The cost is very cheap compare to the West. Im moving to either Thailand or Malaysia in future.
I agree, although the east is actually facing sharp demographic declines as well. Could make for a strange time across the board!
