6:25 The reason for that is simple, if dumb: Rumble was never _released_ in the North American version of Mario 64. It was added afterwards in a Japanese only rerelease that also did things like removing backwards long jump and replacing, "so long-ay Bowser," with, "Bye-Bye." This is why the Super Mario 3D All Stars version has these changes; they used the NA script on the Japanese ROM. Likely with this version they wanted to have the localisations that actually existed at the time, so they used an NA ROM that had no rumble support.
Completely innovative, revolutionary and avant-garde in its time. Ergonomic and functionally superior to all consoles of its generation, and I dare say that to this day I have not tried a more comfortable controller. I've tried modern redesigns and the original model is still the best choice for N64 gaming. I remember what I felt the first time I had it in my hands, at that precise moment N64 became my favorite console of all time, partly because of the gems in its catalog, of course, but also because of its incredible controller.
That joystick is going to have the same exact issue the original had. There's a little nub that rests in a plastic bowl inside the joystick so that the spring can give it tension. That nub gets ground down into a powder especially if you play something like Smash or Mario Party. Also the black plastic levers (if you want to call them that) have slots that the joystick rests in and those will wear quickly as well causing a huge deadzone. They really should be making the internals out of delrin at this point if they want to mitigate most of these problems.
I bought a pack of replacement sticks for $10 on ebay about 15 years ago. Not hard to do and very much worth the purchase back then. Still have 2 left.
@@boltinabottle6307 Replacement sticks are garbage. There are very few proper parts where you keep the original joystick controller board that will actually be good. The issue with all replacement sticks is that they are way too sensitive for good accuracy.

You have answered SO many of my questions and addressed all of my concerns in this video. Thank you very much for your thorough look at the Switch-N64 environment!
I want this for emulation on PC. Of course what N64 games are running well on the Switch, I’ll play there, but if I just got this and paired it to the 8bitdo bluetooth receiver…
The original used to be the main controller of my childhood and thus to this day is what I'm most comfortable with for the mere fact that I played with it for an insane amount of hours. Very happy they apparently went ahead and used the exact same molds/patent designs. Absolutely no-brainer purchase as soon as I can get my hands on it.
I grew up with the N64 but I've always had a soft spot for the Gamecube controllers over them - I'd be absolutely ecstatic if they brought back those games and controllers too. Though there was the new gen ones for smash ultimate it was only a limited run more as a gimmick than anything, so I don't know if it counts. That said, I'll almost definitely pick up one of these N64 ones, too.
It might be worth lubing up the gears inside the controller to limit wear over time. It doesn't look like it comes with any kind of lubrication from the factory.
I just got my NSO N64 controller last month (finally). And it's very nice, but I kept wondering "Is this smaller then the original controller? It feels cramped to hold." Watching this video assures me the NSO controller is the same size, so maybe my hands are just chunkier then back in the day (early 20's for me).
The rumble in the original n64 pak was suspended much lower, that created leverage and a greater rumble effect was achieved. If you mod a pak to run off the n64 power instead of batteries, it will shake nearly out of your hands, the heavy feedback moments are intense. It's bc the leverage. They dropped the ball w the design keeping the motor right there, they'd need a massive motor w offset weight to recreate the feeling well. Probably will last longer though so, maybe the better choice.
I still can't believe they managed to downgrade the thumbstick. I never thought it was possible. Edit: It's the same exact thumbstick mechanics as found on the original N64. It will lose stick strength and will flop around because they didn't change the spring-like mechanism. What they did change, however, was how it detects the stick's position. The original uses a light sensor and automatically calibrates to zero every time the console starts up. The new controller utilizes potentiometers, which is the hardware in controllers infamous for stick drift, like the Nintendo Switch. So not only will your thumbstick flop around if you play Mario Party for a while, but it also won't read zero either. They should have went with hall effect.
Nintendo has stated on the product page that there won’t be anymore restocks until the beginning of 2022 so anyone looking to get it (myself included) are SoL unless people want to pay scalper prices (and even then there’s no guarantee it will be the actual controller depending on who you buy from). I will say though, that the PowerA GC style controllers are a nice alternative and work flawlessly. Reaching down for the C-Stick can be a stretch but it functions like the C-Buttons would.
With that amount of input lag you could essentially use your old n64 controller to play. Press the button you want on it, set it down, proceed to press the corresponding button on your joycon. Voila! Same as what you’d get here.
@@ivan.guitaraaa1903 The PowerA GC style controllers, for wired versions are $25 or 30 US, and the wireless versions are $50. Neither controller has rumble, and only the wireless version has motion controls.
The Nintendo Switch Online controller for N64 is more of a novelty item but it is still pretty cool if you want to have an authentic experience without using old technology. I never grew up in that era but it is cool to play the classics with the og controllers
The version of Super Mario 64 that the Japanese got is their later version that added the voices from the English version, as well as rumble. English speakers got the only version we got back then. So no rumble, but yet "So long-a, Bowser!".

Looking forward (hopefully) to all the various colors. As a kid in a lower-middle-class family, we were basically stuck with the plain black console and grey controller. I always wanted one of the yellow controllers. Adult me can splurge lol
As someone who doesn't play online and just wants to play ocarina of time, majora's mask, and maybe Star Fox...I wish they just bundled this controller with a one time purchase of the N64 expansion pack instead of the subscription model they're currently using.
People think the controller is weird with its shape. I love it, it feels so good to hold it. The way the weight is distributed, the midle being slightly thicker where the Z--button resides Its a very long time since i held one...
This controller is almost absolutely necessary in order to play the N64 games on Switch. The joycons and pro controller just doesn't quite work like they should.
i always very appreciate when a company brings back/recreates something from the past and brings it back to life. I bought one simply for the sake of it, not planning on using it.
One of my biggest complaints in gaming is when input lag is present. It makes it so uncomfortable to play imo. I haven't purchased the expansion pack because of this
I hear you! However, the input lag on N64 games doesn't bother me as much, even today. And yes, OoT has that, but surprisingly, it doesn't bring the experience down, for me. Maybe I have some form of subconscious "nostalgia" for lag on N64 games, since I grew up with them...!
The fact that they took the time to remaster and upscale Super Mario Sunshine in 3d All Stars and not give the same treatment to Super Mario 64 just boggles my mind
It's honestly awesome. It feels so great holding a fresh, Nintendo branded controller for N64. I am so happy with this product, although the expansion pack has a way to go with the game selection.

I'm impressed they didn't just take their sticks to full digital. Those analog gears spinning make me happy. Hopefully they've made good changes w the bowl design and stick material to improve longevity.
I’ve had my Nintendo 64 over 20 years. Works just as good as the day we got it. The problems with these new ports and crappy lag inputs make me laugh. Nothin beats the classics; always replicated, but never duplicated.
It's probably already in here somewhere but the joystick is completely different mechanical technology from the OG N64 controller and is pretty standard by today's metrics. I wouldn't expect any mechanical failures from it over what any other controller is going to suffer from. The OG tech was a pin in a groove that slid in an arch. Lots of friction and any debree got turned in to grinding powder that made the slot bigger and bigger. I would not be surprised at all if the new controller could be used for a direct replacement in an OG controller, just with a plug swap. They're all potentiometers anyway.
Great review. I was lucky to get the n64 new controller on the 2nd release. I got the expansion pack the first day as I was looking forward to Mario Tennis on N64 with the new controller which works really well with the games. I put a switch skull & co. thumb stick cover on the analog stick and it made all the different. Now the analog stick is easy to use. I saw Bob’s review and his analog stick repair, I think he had to use his sauter gun, lol. He is a techi and I’m not. I wouldn’t dare open a controller as I’m sure something would go wrong when I’m putting back together.
I love the n64 controller. There’s ways to convert the analog stick to a game cube analog. The n64 analog stick always wore out. You could also open it up and put tape on the analog stick once it was worn to bring some life back
i converted 3 og n64 controllers to the gamecube style stick. Such a huge improvement and very easy to do. The original sticks are the worst, they are impossible to keep from being floppy.
@@tominator23 I assume there's some extra circuitry required to do that? I bought some 3rd part sticks from Amazon, hoping to repair my original controllers, but the new sticks use potentiometers, and I have no reason to assume that they would be compatible with the signal inputs from the original optical encoders.
Ok, I’m glad he did the test with an actual 64 while talking about input lag, because I definitely remember some games on that being slightly less responsive than you might ideally like them to be.
🤷♂️ This is the only electronic product that limits the sales of users to help mitigate scalping. Even more so than the PS5/Switch raffle systems. Omg, Nintendo and Sony put aside a couple thousand consoles in specific regions, that will certainly stop the scalping of a product they produce in the millions.
Know how I felt back in the day when I got my N64 with its controller as a teenager? Got used to it and had fun playing games. It really wasn’t that bad of a controller.
It was my very first controller, so I didn't know any better at the time. I can play all of the other systems' classic games with any other controller, but N64 games just feel wrong without its controller.
Not Retroarch, but I use mine daily on the pc. P64, VBA, etc. As long as you connect it through Bluetooth there're no problems out of the box, but if you connect through USB it won't register.

Who knows the solution to get a good n64 controller working on switch with rumble feature? The official ones are sold out unless you want to pay a scalper.
I don't think Nintendo was worried about durability of the analog stick on the new N64 online controllers as it shouldn't see as much use as it isn't meant to be the primary controller of the system. They were more concerned about recreating the original experience. It really shows how far they have come since then.
Does the analog stick look more durable than those in the original N64 controllers? That's my only concern. Well, the video addressed my question anyway, we'll probably need to have replacement parts available.
Look more durable, no. Feels more durable, yes. The stick isn't entirely loose like the original, but watch Wulff Dens video as he goes into the stick module.
I never had durability problems with my old N64 analog sticks. The question for me with these new ones is if they're doomed to drift down the line? I'm going to wait and see. If they are, then they're a complete waste of money. I don't care if Nintendo is willing to fix them for free.

6:25 The reason for that is simple, if dumb:
Rumble was never _released_ in the North American version of Mario 64.
"So long, King Bowser."
The Rom that's in the 3d all stars is The Shindou version.
While the one is on the online version isn't.
Like that's... neat. But also dumb.
@@joeltyler3427 I couldn't remember the name, but yes, exactly
I wonder if they made it like this on purpose so these controllers will fail in the same way the old ones did with the joystick getting loose.
From yours truly,
Nintendo
@@boltinabottle6307 Replacement sticks are garbage. There are very few proper parts where you keep the original joystick controller board that will actually be good. The issue with all replacement sticks is that they are way too sensitive for good accuracy.
@@AndonutsJeff If this was done back when the n64 was new I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, but given how they handled the switch failures . . . I'd bet money they kept the same faulty design to make it another physical subscription.
You have answered SO many of my questions and addressed all of my concerns in this video. Thank you very much for your thorough look at the Switch-N64 environment!
Are you ordering one ?
If they made a translucent one I'd buy it in a heartbeat
Finally got mine last week after being sold out for the last four years in Australia
Had some tears in my eyes l.
I think the new N64 Pad feels really great. like a high quality gamepad. time will tell if it holds up better than the original.
Well all 4 of my originals still work over 20 years later..
@@DeCaYsF I guess you don't play mario party that often😅😂
I want this for emulation on PC. Of course what N64 games are running well on the Switch, I’ll play there, but if I just got this and paired it to the 8bitdo bluetooth receiver…
thats what im getting it for . screw using it for switch exclusively lmao
I'll probably try and use it for the 007 xbox live version lol

@@ChiruKobra I was wondering if it worked with PC. That's awesome to hear!
Why do I feel like I am one of the few who likes the Nintendo 64 controller design.
It has its shortcomings but i also like it
It's a unique one for sure. I think it looks cool.
It's all nostalgia
I find it very comfortable, I love it.
Once you know how it's supposed to *work,* it's a pretty solid design for a mono stick controller.
Still have my n64 with original controllers. Parents gave me the system for Christmas 1999
I actually lubed the inner parts that make contact with the plastic ring so it goes smoother, feels better than stock.
🔥
What did you use as lubricant?
@@ryancurtis1996 [[Lube]]
@@ryancurtis1996 Krytox GPL-205 keyboard switch lubricant
Thank you for the info.
I was considering buying one just to replace one of my og controllers stick.
I’m glad I didn’t waste money on it.
This is sold out every time I check, I want it so much.
How much is it?
@@ivan.guitaraaa1903 The PowerA GC style controllers, for wired versions are $25 or 30 US, and the wireless versions are $50. Neither controller has rumble, and only the wireless version has motion controls.
@@zgoaty9235 I'd say the Tribute is a better alternative because y'know, it's actually based on the N64 Control scheme?
The Nintendo Switch Online controller for N64 is more of a novelty item but it is still pretty cool if you want to have an authentic experience without using old technology. I never grew up in that era but it is cool to play the classics with the og controllers
I loved this controller when it first came out. I enjoyed the system as a whole.

The version of Super Mario 64 that the Japanese got is their later version that added the voices from the English version, as well as rumble. English speakers got the only version we got back then. So no rumble, but yet "So long-a, Bowser!".

The N64 looks way more complicated than it was. It’s basically a SEGA Saturn style 6 button controller. Instead of ABC and XYZ they did some stupid shit with C.
I can't believe this, it's over 20 years since I played StarFox (in my country called Lylatwars), but as soon as the bomb spawned in one of the stone arcs on the water, I wanted to press the left c-button and the stick down. I played this game so much that even after 20 years the muscle memory is still there and I was 7 when I was playing this :D
Thanks for the nostalgia, as soon as I get the news that the lag with OoT and SM64 is corrected, I also will get this.

That controller puts one thing in my head.... fun. You're about to have fun. It was made to have fun and no matter what bad is going on in the world, that controller is guaranteed to help you escape it.
The real question is if the analog will wear down easily and get clogged with plastic dust.
It looks pretty much identical to the original design. Probably will scuff up like the original ones.
We have the advantage of hindsight. Put graphite in it.
The N64 pad was the absolute best in the world at the time, it was perfect
I almost threw up when I saw the input lag for OoT. To see that amount of input lag for my favorite game game of all time and that I have put many hours into makes me sick. It's almost unplayable! I'm only upset because this is one of Nintendo's flagship games on their best console with an official controller that they made. Taking that into consideration, you would expect the quality to be so much higher.
Latency feels a lot better for me when connected to the dock via USB and then turning on USB communication under Controller Settings in the main Settings app
Is there any surprise that Nintendo knows how to make an exact replica of its own controller??🤨🤨
(considering they don't hold it right, yes)
About as surprising as the McRib tasting the exact same way every year...
The rumble motor in this controller is sexy. When it connects to the system it practically purrs with how the motor sounds
Great video as always 📹
Tip: The black bar and button text can be removed at the bottom of the screen simply by going to settings and unchecking "show controls in game", works for N64,Snes,Nes,Genesis.
👍 🎮 😀
I loved this controller back in the day. I never held it by the "middle handle". I held it on both sides and reached my thumb over to the stick.
The way the weight is distributed, the midle being slightly thicker where the Z--button resides
Its a very long time since i held one...
This controller is almost absolutely necessary in order to play the N64 games on Switch. The joycons and pro controller just doesn't quite work like they should.
i always very appreciate when a company brings back/recreates something from the past and brings it back to life. I bought one simply for the sake of it, not planning on using it.
I dont know where i can buy one ive looked everywhere
Love your videos. I definitely over paid in almost 2024, but I think it’s totally worth it.
I'm good with my Brawler 64 and Everdrive.
Don't forget an UltraHDMI.
(Or that new HDMI mod)
When I swapped out my OG sticks for GameCube ones a couple of years ago, I also got a USB adaptor for two controllers so I use them on my PC.
I didn’t even notice the input lag to be honest
Why would there be rumble in Mario 64 anyway? The Rumble Pack came out after Mario 64.
The fact that they took the time to remaster and upscale Super Mario Sunshine in 3d All Stars and not give the same treatment to Super Mario 64 just boggles my mind
@tgamer Nintendo gotta Nintendo.
I just realised that the new controllers joy-stick dosent have the little dot in the middle
I have to say Mario 64 feels great with this controller. For me nothing but this controller feels natural with that game
It's a sin to use any other controller
Rumble didn't come out until Starfox. That's why Mario didn't have rumble. Pretty nostalgically and applicatoraly accurate.
Literally no one except Spawn Wave was “blown away” by the N64 controller…
It's honestly awesome. It feels so great holding a fresh, Nintendo branded controller for N64. I am so happy with this product, although the expansion pack has a way to go with the game selection.
@@reiddutchess9955 Seems like you're more in love with the brand and somewhat enslaved to your childhood nostalgia than anything. It's just some molded plastic. Each their own, I guess.
@@jynxce it’s just a product that they made well 😂 that was a very condescending interpretation.

I cringe at the thought of using a solder gun for delicate work like that. That's what soldering irons are for.
I was born in 98 have never even played a N64 before their controllers are definitely out of this world as far as looks
Nintendo is bringing back old School game's ❤

Check out steel sticks for the n64 controller
if i't take a sip of a drink each time he says "obviously" i'd be pissed drunk before the end of the video
I'll always love the N64 and its controller, it was my first console
Ok, I’m glad he did the test with an actual 64 while talking about input lag, because I definitely remember some games on that being slightly less responsive than you might ideally like them to be.
Nintendos business model should be "Nintendo supporting the scalping market one piece at a time."
Have you tried it on PC? Specifically Retroarch?
I managed to get it working well in Retroarch
Not Retroarch, but I use mine daily on the pc. P64, VBA, etc.
As long as you connect it through Bluetooth there're no problems out of the box, but if you connect through USB it won't register.
I was waiting for this video. Thank you!
Nintendo showed up with this weird thing called the CONTROL STICK (matching their other creation: the Control Pad.).
"Analog Stick" is Sony's name for it.
"Analog Thumb Pad" is Sega's name for it.
"Thumbstick" is Microsoft's name for it.

Same. And there's just no excuse for how bad the D pad is on the X1 controller
Having never owned an N64 personally (My Mom got me a PlayStation), I really wanted to get this controller just to experience having my own of this.
Does the analog stick look more durable than those in the original N64 controllers? That's my only concern.
Well, the video addressed my question anyway, we'll probably need to have replacement parts available.
Look more durable, no. Feels more durable, yes. The stick isn't entirely loose like the original, but watch Wulff Dens video as he goes into the stick module.
someone opened the controller and found out the analog stick is actually worse than the original one. Look it up
I never had durability problems with my old N64 analog sticks. The question for me with these new ones is if they're doomed to drift down the line? I'm going to wait and see. If they are, then they're a complete waste of money. I don't care if Nintendo is willing to fix them for free.
@@jaylucien669 Every analog stick is prone to drift. It's not a problem invented by the JoyCons. There are PS5 and XBox Series controllers that have experienced drift months after release.

Honestly in my opinion the N64 controller sucks. When you can’t even get to all the buttons at once, that’s a problem in my book. The best N64 controller is that GameCube style controller people sells. I don’t remember what brand it is though.
Exactly, and you got another dpad instead of the c stick

The Wii nunchuk is sort of a throwback to the middle prong
I think the weirdest part of these new Expansion Pack controllers is that they did the 3-Button Genesis controllers instead of the 6-Button. The 3-Button Genesis pad is... not so good. 6-Button's pretty good, though.
Think the 6 button was released for Switch Online in Japan. I also got the Switch Online Mega Drive controller, think it's better than the original.
I can't not play Zelda the ocarina of time without that controller 😂
