    The reason why the N64 had such a weird controller and a trigger on the middle handle was because they wanted you to be able to choose between using a D-pad, (By holding it normally), or using the Analog Stick, (By holding the middle and right handle). Hope this helps you understand the weird N64 controller design.

    • @shaun8062
      @shaun8062 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You know what's cool? You can actually play all of N64's best first person shooter games using the D-pad for strafing and movement while using your right hand in the middle for aiming and shooting, more similarly to how hand assignments are used in modern first person shooters like call of duty. Some early literature from nintendo even suggested using the d-pad for first person shooters. No one back then seemed to do it though, as they assumed the yellow c-buttons were the way, which was fine, but those buttons make it hard for anyone to go back to play goldeneye today. When I show them you can use the D-pad, kids pick it right up like any other dual controls on first person shooters (phone games, playstation, xbox etc.)

    I’m not a Nintendo console owner currently, but our GameCube broke when I was younger and my dad called Nintendo support when it was several years out of warranty. They replaced it free of charge, they basically ensured I’d continue being a gamer growing up, and it’s just amazing to think that a company was that willing to help its customers out. I’ll honestly never forget that. Thought I’d share a cool little story from my childhood.

    The GameCube was also designed with CRTs in mind. Not necessarily a 4:3 CRT, and a lot of games had 16:9 modes (Sunshine did not), but primarily so. An LCD TV was not what the vast majority of people were playing 6th gen games on. They just didn't have them yet (and 480p games would have looked worse on them anyway).

I remember we all took turns calling out, “I’m first Mario, First Luigi, 2nd Mario, 3rd Mario and so forth. The middle prong of the N64 controller was meant to be held with a left hand. The Z trigger naturally can get pressed. Then your right hand can form around the right side of the controller.

  • @earthboiproductions2407
    @earthboiproductions2407 ปีที่แล้ว +492

    I would like to mention that you weren’t entirely holding the N64 controller right for Mario 64: it’s a lot more comfortable if you put your left hand on the middle prong. That gives you direct access to the Z trigger and the joystick without stretching your hand, and the D Pad isn’t used at all in Mario 64 anyway.

    Correction: The Wii U wasn’t Nintendo’s first biggest failure. It was the 2nd biggest failure since the Virtual Boy was the world’s biggest failure because the VB sold around 700,000 units. And the Wii U ended up selling 13 million units. And it seems you forgot about the VB which isn’t on Nintendo’s history page. Because it was a huge failure. And Nintendo didn’t want to say anything about it on their history page. edit: Just like all VRs, the games on the VB weren’t played that much and many people got dizziness and headaches from this VR console. And many people gave Nintendo many complaints about the VB because they experienced Dizziness and headaches. And they had red monochrome display because it was cheaper and full color games in 8-bit or 16-bit would result in Jumpy images sometimes. Edit: The virtual boy was world’s biggest console failure

      Also it was weaker in raw power than the competition... but not thaaaaat weak, not like Wii vs PS3 and Xbox 360 level, but somewhat weaker than the Game cube and Xbox. This allowed the PS2 to be way cheaper (mainly in developing countries) while still sharing games with the competitors.
      The Xbox was the most powerfull, thus the most expensive, people would not choose it over the cheaper ones, the game cube and the PS2. The game cube was the one in the middle term in terms of power and price, but the mini DVDs made it harder to pirate gamnes... the PS2 was the cheaper one AND used regular DVDs, so pirating was very very easy... the console itself was cheaper and the games were almost for free in developing countries (piracy) making it the really only possible option for the average joe in huge developing countries like Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and etc.

    Lol the flex is impressive, unboxing each of these consoles nowadays is hard to do, let alone all in one room. I have each of them from their release dates minus the original NES.
    Also the d-pad was rarely used on the N64, it usually controlled camera functions. The Z-button and joystick were meant to be used more often with your left hand by grabbing the middle part of the controller. A little bizarre but something that became seamless after awhile.
    Fun tip: On the gamecube, next time you're booting up the console, hold down the indigo z button and the console will make a different start up sound.

    I can't believe there are people of his age that have never held an N64 controller. It's insane to me that someone needs to tell him to hold the handle with the active controls. It's like grandma trying to find "the internet" on her computer

      Most NES and SNES OGs didn’t continue to N64. A good portion of them didn’t come back to Nintendo consoles until Wii.

      @@therealjamesmccrary Honestly, it's absolutely baffling to me that someone would hold it that way even if the only controller they've ever held was their TV remote. How many people on staff saw it before uploading and didn't think anything was weird?
      I don't mean to sound like I have a pitchfork or torch in hand. It's just one of the most bizarre sights my brain has ever tried to make sense of.

    did nobody tell him you can hold the middle prong along with either of the other ones? excellent video BTW! I learned what the PAL version of the SNES looks like! You should also do Nintendo's handheld consoles and compare them to the home consoles.

      as someone who has owned every nintendo handheld since the game boy advance, i agree! i think nintendo was somewhat inconsistent with their home consoles starting with the n64, so more serious gamers like myself grew up with the ps2 & ps3 as opposed to the gamecube & wii (though i did have a wii growing up as well lol) - but nintendo never really had a competitor in the handheld market outside of the psp, so their handhelds carried them when their consoles flopped and hardcore gamers would get them no matter what because they always had a wide variety of quality games available (again, due to a lack of competition)

      @@kaphizmey6229 Only a few concerns there. How would he count the game and watch when each one is its own game? Also their handheld line up has a lot of half steps and revisions than home consoles do. Things like the Gameboy Color, DSi, and new 3DS seem worth including since they have games that can't be played on the previous iterations without exactly being new generations. But what about things like the Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Advanced SP, and all the various lites and XL's. Obviously things like different colors and special editions shouldn't count, but there are a lot of different form factors that diverge from the originals of each generation.

    Actually the first ever Mario game was the Super Mario Bros. Arcade game. Some people think Donkey Kong was the first Mario but it doesn’t classify as a Mario game.

    On most N64 games(Like Super Mario 64) you're supposed to hold the middle grip of the controller. It makes it easier to use the analog stick and you have access to the Z button which many games used.

    This was a great video and a real trip down memory lane. Where on earth did you find all those pristine consoles to make the video with. Would love that collection. I have all the PlayStations all set up ready to play at any time. Would be great to go for Nintendo next like this. The NES was my first major gaming console after the Binatone TV Master lol.
