    As a new Tesla owner who tried both before settling on the MYLR 2024, both are nice. The performance is faster. Never really used the brakes with REGEN. I like the better ride, raised position, and thicker sidewalls for the urban day to day grind and occasional country roads. Easier and cheaper tires, non staggered setup, longer range, and lower insurance. Now both come with the headlight upgrade too. Ill admit im over 50. To each his own. I like them both.

    Got a 22 MYP last march. Got it within a few weeks of ordering vs 12 months wait for the LR. It replaced a gas guzzler much sooner than waiting a year = gas savings. Also was able to downsize to more efficient and lighter LR wheels + cash on our end. In the end for us it was cheaper getting a performance sooner than waiting for a LR. (this was before all the incentives and price reductions happened that I never would have predicted happening)

    I just found out my 2023 Model Y long range made in Fremont plant has the Matrix lights. The Austin made 2023 Model Y has the normal headlights. The Fremont build and paint is excellent, so I’m very happy. Now finding out I have the Matrix lights I feel fortunate.

    LR with accel boost gives you 90% of the performance with better efficiency, better ride quality, cheaper insurance, less spend on tires, better in winter climates

    • @senseinick8389
      @senseinick8389 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Your points are spot on, and most people don't fully appreciate just how much more the operational costs are compared to the LR on top of the upfront cost. However, I rented a Performance for a bit to compare and it really was impressive performance.

    • @awashkowitz7156
      @awashkowitz7156 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Untrue. The difference in range is 10% which you won’t notice for charging/supercharging stops/times. The MYP acceleration (if that’s important to you) is not comparable to the MYLR even with acceleration boost. If it’s important you, you’ll notice the difference. The insurance is not higher (at least not for me). The ride quality is relative…different people like different ride qualities.
      At the end of the day (upgrading wheels and acceleration boost), the MYP cost difference is $1k (plus you’ll get it much sooner).

    • @tonyfrese287
      @tonyfrese287 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@awashkowitz7156 well in a vast majority of states it’s more expensive to insure. And the tire wear is a big deal with staggered setup for us northeasterners. Not sure why they can’t make a performance model with different tire and rim options. That would be the best of both worlds.

    • @awashkowitz7156
      @awashkowitz7156 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agreed about more wheel/tire options being favorable. I’m in MA, and chose the MYP for the reasons stated. My insurance quotes for MYLR and MYP were barely different.
      I admittedly changed the wheel/tire setup but the tire wear is more related to the driving habits than it is to the staggered (vs even) setup.

      The range differences is Performance full charge 290 ish. LR is 310. That’s 20 miles difference. And I own the performance and my friend have long range. 4000 difference. You get spoiler, matrix headlights, faster, 21 inch rims, red brakes vs 20 miles range? Bruh

    The extended dash cover into the doors is def cool, it reminds me of a '60s Chrysler top of the line coupe that had a wrap-around dash. As for range (I have the LR), I popped the wheel covers off those 19" Geminis and put a set of black lug-nut caps and a black and silver center cap on. That looks cool but I may put the OEM covers back on for the next road trip. On the exterior, I had my local detailer change out the chrome logos and "Dual Motor" badge for all black which also looks cool on the Deep Blue Metallic finish. The ride is fine on freeways and no car feels good on my local gravel back roads but I may increase slightly the tire pressure for Summer and back to standard for Winter on my Cross Climate 2 set. Thanks Chris for a good comparison of these 2 variants and drive safely.

    I'm struggling with this decision now too, but living in Michigan I would have to buy different all-season tires anyway for the MYP (I'm not interested in buying, storing, and changing multiple sets of tires for summer vs snow). I think the MYLR makes more sense for me, unfortunately

    In my experience, the superchargers are so well positioned (west coast) I don’t feel the need to have an extra 20-30 miles. Y performance is such a great value now. You could not upgrade the Y LR for the price difference. Looks handling and reasonable ride. My old X 90D maxes at 219 miles. I can go LA to Vegas or San Francisco easily (more stops)-a few times a year or less?

    Thanks for making this video! I was looking for a MYLR VS MY Perf comparison. I’m coming from an Audi RS4 (high performance sedan) so for me the performance version is an absolute must. I do want to let you know that I disagree with your last point about the “fun to drive thrill” perk being temporary. I have had my RS4 for 8 years now and it’s still just as fun to drive as the day I got it even though I have gotten used to the speed a bit but also it has become such a necessity for me now to be able to overtake cars quickly without struggle that I could never have my next car be a slower car ever for that reason. For me it’s Model Y performance or nothing.

    Another great video Chris! In my opinion, for $4k more, you get so much more out of the performance. Sure, nobody is gonna be doing 155mph and 0-60 in 3.5 sec. all the time but having an upgraded Uberturbine vs Induction wheels ($2k option), then "Performance" brakes, Lowered Suspension, Aluminum Pedal, Carbon Spoiler ($800 Tesla option) and the biggest one Matrix Headlights with faster delivery is a no brainer. Just think about other brands' performance models like a basic BMW 3 series to a BMW M3 that's like a $20k+ option. Now speaking of range, if that really matters to people, just downsize your wheels to 19" and you will get the same range as the Long Range. Literally, everything that changes the Model Y's Range is heavily dependent on the wheels. MYLR with 19" Gemini goes 330, then MYLR with 20" Induction goes to 318, so of course, the 21" Uberturbine will drop the range to 303. MYLR and MYP have the same battery capacity, and if you drive the Performance model conservatively with 19" or 18" wheels, you will easily reach 330+ mile range. Other TH-camrs has done this test and showed a significant range increase. From average 320wh/mi to 270wh/mi with smaller wheels. That's in the same efficiency as the MYLR. I say of you have the extra $4k, you want to have a faster delivery time, bragging rights, all the bells and whistles, just go for the Performance. Like you said Go BIG or Go Home.

      I put on the spoiler for $650 from Tesla. The bigger tires and lower suspension (by 1/2"??) aren't that big a deal - they look a bit nicer, but... I added Aluminum pedals for $10. And used a referral to get Acceleration Booster, so I'm at 0-60 in 4.2. I also added caliper covers. Car looks fantastic - oh, and chromed the 19" Gemini's.
      Having said that, I would have been tempted by the P if I hadn't read so many negative reviews about the ride with the 21" versus the 19".

    Bottom line, both MYLR and MYP are essentially the same car. The only true difference is the mechanical rear drive motor and firmware allowing 'performance' level power (There are MYLR's with the same 980/4D1/740 rear drive motors minus the firmware update, you can always go aftermarket Ingenext Ghost mod to achieve power parity or official Tesla Acceleration Boost (off the line MYP is faster, once rolling you're about the same until you reach 135mph haha). Aftermarket route is definitely YMMV in terms of support.
    Suspension, Brakes, CF Spoiler, wheels are really not justification points. As mentioned in the video there really isn't any HUGE differentiation between the two, unlike other performance cars with wider fenders, larger brake calipers with supporting rotors and stainless steellines (not talking about painting them red). For the sake of trivia, all MY brakes are the same calipers, rotors (355mm Front / 335mm R), and brake pads. Performance variant has a cover (Mid 2022+).

    Tesla is improving the cars including suspension in real time. Newer cars may ride even better. I thought performance Y ride is very good and handling is great, braking better (brakes, tires, suspension)

      @@likearock2428 it's not really a word. Trunk refers to the rear storage area of a car in US English. Because the Tesla also has storage in the front of the vehicle, it's called the Front Trunk, which is shortened to Frunk.
      In the UK we call the rear storage area the 'Boot'. So the Front Boot gets shortened to 'Froot'. I'm not sure anyone calls it that though!

    Do you think cops will give warnings to Tesla Model Y Performance? I have been pulled over a few times but every single time it was just a warning. Even my friend who was stupid enough to speed past a slow driving cop on an empty night freeway also got a warning, he only got up to 80mph (in my car). I drive a white Tesla Model 3.

    Neither. Tesla delivering Tesla 3/Y since October 2022 with *NO* ultrasonic sensors and no replacement for the functionality they provided - what a rip off! Replacing inexpensive, available sensors that just work and require relatively little programming logic with no ultrasonic sensors and tons of additional software complexity to use vision -that’s absolutely the wrong move. Not to mention the blind spots not covered by the cameras. Cheaper cars and even Tesla cars sold more than 5 years ago have USS! If that's not enough, as of January 2023, Tesla would be adding radar back. ?!? Taking delivery of a new Tesla model 3/Y in December 2022 with no sensors would be a very bad move. I am almost certain I will have to cancel my order. Very very disappointing. Paying through the nose for a Tesla, I just cannot overlook this. And I do not believe them that a similar or better solution will come any time soon, there will be no parity to USS. What a horrible move by Tesla.
