  • Red Dead Redemption 2 has finally launched its DLSS update! I've been very excited to explore DLSS image quality and framerate comparisons in RDR2. This video is my first look at RDR2 DLSS settings, image quality comparisons, and performance benchmarks. I'm actually a bit curious whether DLSS quality might look better than native in some ways due to the blurriness of the native TAA antialiasing solution.
This test was performed on my RTX 2070, i5 9600k, 16GB RAM system, but please note that framerates would be higher without the overhead from recording on OBS.

Honestly, if TAA fails you, might aswell opt for msaa or classic fxaa if you don't want a performance hit. Sure, fxaa is a little soft, but at least it's temporally stable.

Much better man. I'm always a 1440p gamer, coming from a 4k 55 inch oled, I had enough of the damn blur on big tvs. Switched to a 27 inch 144hz 1440p aoc. Turning DLSS Quality not only improves the frames majorly, it's looks the same since you're at 1440p. 4k on a 27 inch or maximum 32 inch would have the same effect. Mind you, I'm picky as hell with resolutions and taa etc. DLSS is amazing, it's what made me get a gaming pc for the first time in more than a decade
Also, you're on 1080p. QUALITY and Performance would do you. But Performance does render the game lower. I think quality is good enough for the extra fps.
Currently running a 3070M with Ryzen 7 5800 and ssd. The only few things I did tweak lower in this game was the Reflections on the surface and water. Now, I don't see a damn difference between high and ultra, except that ultra tanks the damn frame. No joke, high is perfect. Hell, the entire lighting system on with high graphics is already a joy man, but at ultra, sometimes you feel like you're playing an e3 game. Oh boys

Tree Tessellation, Near Volumetric and Water Physics are the options to turn off or down a notch. Water Physics really only thing you can notice a difference but it's easily tolerable at mid or 3/4. Full on is kind of next gen in my opinion water physics. And yes, the camp is like the most demanding part of the game with all systems and characters. Next to the city at night at least.

This seems like a good start to DLSS implementation, and good news for people that can't stand low frame rates. Maybe they'll be able to tweak it a bit in a future patch as it does some funky things, for sure. Thanks!

60Fps on quality in your case, would be like a 50% performamce increase from your 40Fps. There is no game where you can gain so much performance on the quality setting. Even on Performance preset this would be really unusual. You got like 5Fps more on qulaity, thats already about a 10% performance uplift and an even better looking image.

Good stuff! That's pretty similar to the visual stuff I was noticing. There are a few drawbacks, but getting rid of the default TAA had some upsides as well. I think it is enough of a wash on pros/cons to image quality (based on my first impressions- I'm hoping to have more time for a more detailed analysis) that it would be crazy not to grab the extra frames from running at Quality setting especially for people like me who are definitely not able to max the game out at 60fps native.

Turn off ANY sharpening in Nvidia control panel if you use DLSS. Even the slightest bit creates a disgustingly over sharpened picture. I’ve opted for the balanced setting on 1440p the clarity difference is extremely small next to Quality mode but the extra frames on Balanced are more than worth it. Now get around 80fps instead of 60 pre patch 👌🏻 Sadly the DLSS is the only decent part of this update.

The fps went from 36 avg native 4k to the said 55 fps in quality mode.

I ran a bunch of benchmarks tonight, and what I found so far is that DLSS didn't help during the times where the frame rates drop. It seems to be more of a cpu bound problem during those moments(I'm guessing). So basically the times where my frame rates drop to 55-ish in native, it's the same with DLSS turned on. The only time DLSS improves frame rates is when I am above 60fps. So it helps but it doesn't prevent the choppy moments. Very disappointing, and I have a Ryzen 9 3900X and a 2060 super. I'm running at 1440P but not on ultra. I have my settings tuned custom so I can usually hit about 60 FPS. If it's not helping at the worst times, then it's no help to me. OH! and it crashed every time I tried to run 1440P 75 fps resolution with DLSS on and vsync off, on the scene with the town at night and there's a lamp and the moon. Very disappointing. I was expecting so much more. Seems more like a gimmick than an actual feature, on this game.

The reason your framerate isn't much better is two fold, a.) You have Full-screen Borderless enabled, which will basically always lower performance on its own, and b.) Recording in OBS lowers performance as you mention, but it's worse if you're using NVIDIA Broadcast, which will use the tensor cores on your GPU, which are also what handle DLSS/RTX features on 20/30 series cards.

Reading that article says "Disable all available “Vertical Sync,” “V-SYNC,” “Double Buffer,” and “Triple Buffer” options." on the in-game settings. Later he says to enable it in the global drivers but explains it like this: "While NVCP V-SYNC has no input lag reduction over in-game V-SYNC, and when used with G-SYNC + FPS limit, it will never engage" he literally says it will never engage when using his recommended FPS limiter settings. So I'm not sure I'm convinced.

    • @AndreaCimitan
      @AndreaCimitan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@danielowentech it’s explained in the FAQ linked in that article. Vsync makes sure you are guaranteed a smooth experience with no tearing, framerate limiter helps achieving that. There is no input lag human can perceive by adding vsync or a framerate limiter, but you will be able to notice a smoother frame time and no tearing. Try and see, in some games the difference is immediately noticeable.

You're probably CPU limited in that camp scene, certain settings really tax the CPU in this game.. About DLSS in this game, I also tested it and it creates to many artifacts in stuff like the horse's (white) manes which bothers me, so I decided not to use it.. I get plenty good fps (60+) anyway with a i7 10700K and RTX 3080 system at the 3840x1600 native resolution I play that.. That is with the 'Hardware Unboxed' optimized settings..

That's my guess here because I get the same thing on a my i7 10700K when I turn everything to Ultra and max and see if I can run it with DLSS on.. I use a 3070 and will never again play without it. This game had some blinking issues no matter what I tried. This fixed it

Funniest part about the videos when you blame the fog for the bad frame rate lmfao..... RTX 3070 my guy

Rdr 2 is the worst pc ported game ever, you can have a high end system wich runs games like gta 5 on ultra 60fps but barely get 50fps on high-medium in rdr 2 with framedrops.

@@FriendwithNoName7 i play planetside2....trust me I know frame drops... Sucks these high cash cards can't do they jobs better...... 120fps at spawn gate but as soon you get in a 1000 player fire fight... 77fps...with a low of 58.... And that's with a dam old card on a laptop.... I can only imagine how you guys feel.... I'ma wait till the 5070ti lol

Its all clear to me now and as I expected, minimal fps gain on RTX 2000 series and maximum gain on RTX 3000, i see people gaining like 20fps on RTX 3090, i gained +9fps on RTX 2080 ti, Quality DLSS looks trash, blurry and during movement everything gets even worse, worst implementation ive seen yet. Expected from R*.

The game looks much, much better with DLSS on quality.

It has a few drawbacks as well but I feel like it is overall sharper due to the native TAA implementation not being very good and DLSS replacing it.

Dlss (quality) made the game worst for me. Light, some bushes and hair strand all look jaggy and blurry. Looks terrible and kind of distracting for me. Can't see pass it.

Worst implementation of DLSS since 2.0 launched anything but Quality changes the entire lighting of the game somehow people a bit away like I'm camp are blobs tins of weird glitchy stuff I hope it's just cuz the driver isn't out yet like someone posted

The blobby lights happened with all point lights with TAA on. DLSS uses TAA high as a reference so nothing will fix that except a higher resolution.

I've never seen DLSS look 'better' it always looks smeared and glitchy to me.

I did another video that shows the actual benchmarks. 15% uplift from dlss quality.
