The thing about the resolution setting compared to other graphics settings is that it only affects the sharpness of the game, the other settings can change the way the game looks. So I would rather have other settings on max with optimized resolution regardless of if it's native or not as long as I'm satisfied with the sharpness. But dlss causes artifacts, such as flickering lights at night, and blurry textures in the distance like 0 anisotropic filtering.

The lighting or SSAO is definitely better on the Ultra vs optimized. The colors look a lot more natural in the first shot in the shop on the ultra settings, which may just be the FSSAO.

Adding sharpening in nvidia control panel may improve image quality for dlss. RE8 just recently has updated with image sharpening defaulting to on rather than off. The only game in my collection to do so. The picture quality in RE8 at 4k native appears vastly clearer and more life like now compared to day one coincidentally.

  • @Zuon94

HUB settings are great, but there's something about the lighting on ultra that gives off a more subtle lighting fall-off, like the reddish tint added to the wood inside the store. Is this related to Lighting Quality or Global Illumination?

For sure i prefer 4K HUB settings over 1080p Max Settings.
The point of HUB is to have graphics settings that almost look as good as ultra settings with obviously the benefit of a boost on performance.
Well, 1080p and 4K is not really apple to apple and definitely Native has zero problems over DLSS, no artifacts whatsoever.
But ofc using DLSS starting from 1080p native is going to look much worse than using it starting from native 4K.
Anyways, i get around 45-55 fps on 4K HUB settings on my RTX 2080 and it's not the ideal 60+ fps i would like to have expecially for the shooting parts and to get the gold medals for the missions (hard to have 75-80% accuracy on enemies with 45 fps, unless i would use the boring dead eye), but it's playable.
Missed the chance to get a RTX 3090 from an italian store and now i'm sad.
Even the RTX 3090 can drop in the 40s at 4K Native Max Settings though, but 4K with DLSS Ultra should be a 60+ fps experience.
Hopefully the next AMD/Nvidia Flagships can do 60+ fps at 4K Native in this game.
And more hopefully, there is a stock and they are ready to buy at MSRP...

Another great thing about DLSS over the Native TAA, is that the trees have much more context. TAA blurs the leaves into one big green blob, while DLSS allows for much more sunlight to peek through...resulting in some really improved volumetric lighting scenes. Some of the early morning fog scenes with the sun ripping through the trees are simply mesmerizing.

so the biggest improvement I can see using DLSS is the distant foliage rendering. Trees and grass is a lot sharper. This is impossible to achieve even on maxed native, maybe 4K can go close, but at performance cost. In return, we have ugly hair, power lines and birds leaving trails. I think, overall DLSS is very promising, the idea is great and ML is developing really fast, but the implementation for this game is kinda lacking and require fixes.

Using rtx 3080 w/ i510600k I get ~60+/- fps average on ultra settings on native 4K, NO DLSS. 60fps is good enough for me as I use my PC as a console hooked up to a 70" samsung curve 4k. The picture is amazing and beautiful at native resolution @ ultra settings and the fps is buttery smooth. There some instances where it stutters but thats only about 1% of the timel.. Over all Native is the best way to go... Now On my rtx 2060 super that I previously had (before I upgraded to the 3080 about a few days ago) unfortunately I had to use DLSS. BTW this is great video.. Im going to try to use that "optimized" settings and maybe tweak it a little for the 3080.. I might be able to get rid of that 1% low stutters.

The truth is in 1080p the game looks like shit, honesly. Nothing helps it: none of the TAA sharpening messing around, not Nvidia Control Panel sharpening, not switching between native/DLSS. Oh wait, disabling DLSS actually DOES do something! In native 1080p the game looks EVEN MORE like blurry shit!
My decision on 5600X/3060? Optimized settings + some minor personal preferences favouring quality + DLDSR 1.78 (its 1440p on FullHD) + DLSS Quality. I'm guessing it's renders the game in 1080 (because the virtual resolution is 1440p and DLSS Quality for 1440p is kinda 1080p I guess), then upscales it to 1440p then downscales it back to 1080p. Voila! It doesn't look like shit anymore!
Later I'm gonna upgrade to 2560x1080 FreeSync monitor and I think my system can handle it. Based on ALL the comparisons (21:9 FHD vs 16:9 FHD / 1440p vs 1080p) and my own DLDSR 2.25 (its 1620p on FullHD) + DLSS Quality bench, I could actually run RDR2 in solid 50-60s in UWFHD + DLDSR 1.78 + DLSS Quality.
By now, on a regular 16:9 FullHD I get solid 60s and it's look gorgeous for my taste, apart from DLSS artifacts (which are awful but barely seen in motion) and utterly broken DX12 in my case. I also use Sharpen 0.2 + igonre film grain 0.17 in Nvidia CP.

Well this video aged poorly, completely fixed now, NO more hair issues on RDR2.

Nah shadow quality is a dead giveaway, anything below high in this game looks plain awful and introducing noisy and glitchy shadows on tesselated surfaces like sand for example

DLSS in RDR2 is terrible. No matter what you do. It's poorly implemented. Any other setting you can do will always be better than DLSS in this game

      how about DLSDR + DLSS

i would highly recommend playing with 100 taa sharpening

Weird, to me DLSS has finally made the game actually look good. Native with standard anti aliasing makes the game look like a smeary, Vaseline smothered mess. Whereas DLSS makes everything infinitely clearer and beautiful. Can't account for taste I guess, how people actively perceive their games is a real interesting set of phenomena.

I couldn't agree more. I don't know how people even consider it close at all. To each their own, I guess. I actually had a really hard time making the game look good enough to enjoy up until the point of DLSS. 4k was high enough to counter how bad the TAA was, but that's so expensive to run. I will say that using about 1800p allowed a good inbetween, but DLSS has come in and really turned the game into what I wished it could have been. The skeptics confuse me, and I'd put money down that they're wearing an AMD shirt to bed every night.

@@T1cksandLeeches AMD cope for sure in some cases. Some people need to fine tune their eyes, perception does not come for free you need to actively engage your senses most of the time until your senses catch up I guess.

Pretty much rule #1 of PC gaming: never run games on ultra, unless the framerate is already higher than your monitor's frequency limit and you don't wanna bother spending time tweaking sliders.

But a lot of people would rather buy a new $2000 GPU than turn any settings down lol

@@danielowentech yep, true. It's like running everything on ultra settings becomes second nature if you can afford it. For someone like me that has always chosen to go with medium/budget builds, this sounds kinda "wrong". Idk.

DLSS looks terrible on RDR2! It just looks like sharpness is maxed to hell plus graphic artifacts/banding. What a joke. TAA sharpening turned off in settings makes little difference.

DLSS looks like garbage on every game I've tried it on with my 3070ti, with like 5-10fps gains at the most.... It's garbage

  • @LuxuryLife433

Your CPU is horrible, switch to a better CPU and check. Maybe AMD didn’t pay you enough so you can’t afford it

I dont know why I'm bothering to reply but here goes: the tests are running on the same cpu. There are a few minor spots in Saint Denis where there is a cpu limit reached, but this lowers the performance of the optimized settings more than dlss since higher fps reaches a cpu bottleneck first. If anything a stronger cpu would show a further lead for optimizing the settings.

I really like dlss by the way, it just happens to make the hair look worse in this game.

Dlss fixes the bears smearing into a muddy mess in motion. Big win
