I just pulled my housing off today got stuck on the top sensor removal which you mentioned here ran out of daylight so back at it tomorrow morning.. mechanic told me $650 to do this I’m a signal mom of two i can’t afford that shit so I said no I’ll do it myself. He also said my leak was due to a crack in the housing after I pulled it off today I see no cracks, I already have my new part I paid 135$ for and the old part off so I basically have no choice but to replace it and hope maybe it was leaking from the gasket and not an actual crack on the housing 🤞
Had my avenger since 2017 I’ve replaced countless things including thermostat housing. Very good reliable car if you take care of it and the oil changes bought from mom/dad they had it since 2012 when they 1st got it , it 89,000miles when I got it in 2017 it had 199k now it has 230k runs like a champ
On mine the part where the radiator cap is broke and i replaced that. Since then, my car slightly overheats when i park for a minute. When i turn it back on and drive it goes back down
I don’t have a leak I can see but it’s runnn hot I changed one of my thermostat what can be the problem one of my lower radiator house is cold the other one is hot?
I have a 2012 Avg. My temp gauge runs a few digits below the halfway mark and my heater blows luke warm air. I assume its the thermostat but which one?! Why in the hell is there 2?
I ordered my part online and saved a bundle. Those labor estimate the other comments said are about right and they wanted to charge for the cooling flush too. So we saved a lot. We ended up not flushing it ourselves. And still need to go do that lol. But my car isn't overheating anymore so I'm happy lol.
Hey there thanks for the video. I'm experiencing a small coolant leak from the Tstat housing right up under where the smaller thermostat goes into the engine block. It only leaks once the vehicle is completely cooled down. Funny thing is, and I must mention that I replaced the housing 7 months ago due to seeing coolant pooled up in that area. After a few months later and I notice my coolant level still diminishing at about the same rate (1/3rd of reservoir per 3-4 months). Here recently, while idling at sonic my temp gauge rose to a hair past the 3/4ths mark. After I shut engine off I noticed no coolant in the reservoir. So I vented the release on the radiatior cap and coolant seemed to boil up inside the reservoir. It seemed to boil a min then stopped. So I filled up and drove home. That was after needing a jump.. which is weird.. Maybe battery got too hot..? Anyhow, now I notice this leak.. I'm thinking of replacing the housing again, but it just baffles my mind at why this thing is still leaking.. It's almost as if it's been leaking since before I replaced the housing 7 months ago, with no luck at anything I've tried since.. I believe my next move is going to be to add some sealant around the smaller Tstat on the side that bolts onto the engine block. Let's see if that works.. Though it's very frustrating, I am in need of good advice as this is my families only vehicle, so any suggestions would be of great help. Thanks a bunch!
Have you ever figured it out? My brother has had the same issue. We replaced the the housing... still leaked in the area you described. Added sealant... still leaked. I'm thinking maybe yhe block warps in the area or something.
@@geeess958 Yes sir! It turned out to be a bad thermostat gasket. The one that bolts onto the engine block. I never assumed the gasket was bad because I replaced the housing that came with new gaskets. But upon taking the old housing off I noticed the gasket to the block was crushed inward. So I guess that's where my leak had been all along. And once I replaced the new housing and gasket, I'm guessing the gasket was just faulty and needed to be replaced. Lol such a minor repair for such a headache! But it's taken care of now, once I put a new gasket on it, it hasn't leaked since. Hope that helps.
@@geeess958 Also you should make sure your leak is coming from right up under the thermostat housing and not the inlet tube coming from the block. you should be able to reach your finger right up under where the thermostat mounts to block. You should feel wetness and see the trail running from right under it. Mine only leaked when it completely cooled down.
The thermostat the big one wont fit in place there is like a big bolt inside the housing where you put the big thermostat any suggestion or ideas ?It fit backwards though jajajaja
See It, Say It no! And I actually just junked my 08 Avenger today because I was having overheating issues. Replaced everything to do with cooling etc. paid hundreds to get tested etc and no one could figure out the problem. I REFUSE purchase another avenger, let alone a dodge! The worst engineering I’ve ever seen!
@@DoloraMoore If you had taken your vehicle to a reputable trustworthy shop they would have found the issue. If it was badly overheated the issue was most likely head gasket. Also if you hate Dodge Avengers much why are watching videos of a Dodge Avenger?
Charger383Mopar I never said I hated them. I took my vehicle to 4 different mechanics and after all that I took it to 2 different dodge dealerships. Still they couldn’t figure it out. Everything was functioning properly but it was still overheating.
@@DoloraMoore one thing I do know is that the coolant used in these cars can cause issues if its mixed with the wrong type. The original coolant in some cars looks like the Dexcool used in GM vehicles and if its mixed will actually cause the coolant to gel up inside the engine and that would cause persistent overheating issues. Even if the radiator and heater core are replaced if the gelled up coolant is in the motor it will just be moved around and clog up the radiator again.
I’m telling you now, get rid of that money sucker (Avenger)! It won’t last. You will put all the money into just for it to clunk out like mine did. Horrible engineering
Just because you had a bad experience with your Avenger doesn't mean all of them are junk. Anything will last if you take care if it. If you hate Dodge Avengers so much why are you watching videos on Dodge avengers
Charger383Mopar I did take care of my car. Oil changes, tune ups, flushes, the whole nine. And actually most of them are bad. Everyone is having pretty much the same problems. Even one guys sub frame was rotting and almost caused his wife to die while driving. They call it a zombie car and stopped making the avengers for a reason. I loved my car but after everything I put into it and no one could figure out why my car was still overheating, including dodge themselves...you would feel the same.
@@DoloraMoore I did see some pictures or video of someone's Avenger with a rusted out subframe. I live in the south and the undercarriage of my car is rust free. I've had this car for 3 years no with no major issues and I'm sure anything that does come up I can fix it.

I just fixed my avenger exactly the same problem. I got 19”art rims on mine. The avenger is a great looking car to bad dodge stop making them

How did you decide that the thermostat was bad?
If you would listen to the first 50 seconds of the video again that should answer your question.
I'm about to do this same job.
I have a 2012 Avg. My temp gauge runs a few digits below the halfway mark and my heater blows luke warm air. I assume its the thermostat but which one?! Why in the hell is there 2?
I was very surprised to find 2 thermostats in this car because I have never heard of more than 1 on the same vehicle.
Michael Hontz Is your car have 2 thermostat?
Don't replace that 30 year old fence unless it's rotted. Todays treated lumber is lucky to last 5 years before it starts rotting.
The whole fence was rotten and falling apart so it was in desperate need for replacement.
I wonder how much you save money wise by doing it yourself. Isn't labor nowadays way more expensive then the parts are?
Mark Verstappen it's always cheaper to do your own work if you can.
Labor is generally at least $100/hr, and I've heard of rates up around $140/hr. It's WAY cheaper to do stuff yourself.

120$ for the part...two Miller Lite's and an hour of my time

How do I get the thermostat housing gasket the square part to completely seal
I would make sure all mounting surfaces are clean and tighten everything down

Is it possible to accidentally install the thermostat in the wrong (opposite) direction on an avenger? Or it just fits one way ? Thanks
Good question! I just did a 2012, stat would not fit backwards
