My sister has an ‘08 Dodge Avenger 2.4L 240k miles and it is great. She floors it EVERYTIME she accelerates. I can’t believe How well-built this thing is after seeing how hard she has driven it for the last 10 years. Obviously, it has had its share of minor issues. Thermostat housing replaced 3 times (kept cracking) And it kept throwing batteries and alternators, because the battery kept getting wet due to it being inside the Driver side front fender. The rear defrost interferes with the radio reception because of how close the antenna is. I would highly recommend anyone who wants to buy a used one because It is extremely reliable. We’ve been told the reason it has lasted this long is because of the way she drives it, so be sure not to baby it and stick that thing to the floor. It’s not fast by any means, but it will get you where you want to go.
My engine light turned off when I was beating on her she was happy to be used the way she supposed to be!! They definitely throw fits if you baby them!
My wife & I had a 2012 SXT plus with the 3.6L and we got 302,000 miles from the motor till our daughter in law totaled it. It was a Great Car. I think Dodge made a mistake removing the 3.6L Avengers
As a former two decade long flat-rate mopar dealer tech. The four cylinder with a four speed is a good set up, is the Dodge Spirit of the 2000's. I own an avenger as a spare car with 22k miles. Highly recommend them.
I have a 2012 Avenger SXT with the same engine but my transmission is a 6-speed automatic. You showed it had a 4 speed auto. It's a 6-speed and it makes all the difference. I've got over 140K miles on it and, outside of regular maintenance, I've never had a single issue with this car. I love it.
Our spare car is my wife's 2012 Avenger RT. We got it in 2016 and drove 2.5 hours to get it lol being 4 years old it only had 22k miles on it and we just broke 75k miles last Sunday on it. Its fully loaded with leather, all the red accents, heated seats, moon roof, warrior paint, touch screen radio. Love that car.
Have a 2012 Dodge Avenger se 2.4 liter with 209,000 miles on it. Bought it from my nephews wife when it had 162,000 miles on it . I’ve had no problems at all except I’ve changed the brakes and bought some tires. The Previous owner maintained it well and so do I and it’s been great !!
Cheap paint and interior, but the 2.4L SE I got is reliable. Some minor stuff, like paint/clear coat, antenna cover crumbled off, passenger side door vinyl peeling up, A/C vents don't work, and I had the headrest popped out (recall). Did have the blend door issue twice. Not a bad car. I loved the look (the paint is killing me though). Engine is a dog. But it starts up every time. I bought the car in May 2018 at 49500 miles, it has almost 79k miles now.
i love driving my 2o13 sxt, but admittedly have had electrical issues such as a crank no start, electrical problems, however once those bridges were crossed, this car is really solid
Wow,you really did a good job...I know this because I own a 2013 Avenger,82,000 miles, have had it almost 5 years and it has been a very good car.The thermostat housing is plastic and is known to leak....mine does leak but its a very small amount so I havent got around to it yet.The blend door, occasionally clicks...there is heat on both sides,I think andI get a little noise coming from the rear that is probably a drag link but I am not sure. Motor and trans seem very reliable and very little has ever been done to this car since it was new.Rocker panels still look good and It has lived in Maine its whole life but the mileage is limited to just about 1500 a year so it hasnt really been put through the ringer.I am glad to hear about your knowledge with this car and I may be back so Thanks and you got a new subscriber!
Thanks for the advice on the heater core! Mine is doing exactly as you described, other than that its been very reliable. The chrome peel on the interior door handles is a real thing lol.
I bought mine 9 years ago at 58k miles. It has 190k miles now and I don't really have any issues except two of my windows don't work. I have the 2012 base se model. I like it. Really simple to work on.
2013 SE v6...64k miles, runs beautifully, I will probably keep it until the end of days. Visually dentical to yours, down to the spoiler and '18 alloys, just in Billet Silver. I agree its a solid, teutonic car that is highly underrated.
Funny enough i found this while looking for replacing the rear suspension parts because the camber is starting to get there. Before I owned it (bought it off my dad) he took it to a shop to get an alignment but the tech said it was so rusted that he adjusted it the best he could because he didnt want to snap the bolt. Also having that blend door issue.
I have a 2012 dodge avenger se with 191k miles and it runs great. Only had to get a new battery and alternator but other than the basic maintenance breaks oil changes etc it runs great
I have a 2013 Avenger RT 3.6 with 187k miles. So far my AC went out.I changed blend doors of course which is a cheap fix.Paid 1k for air to be fixed at Firestone only to last 1 week.Other than heating/AC problems its still a solid running car.The 3.6 is a great motor and runs strong until 4th gear. The tramsmissions aren't the best.I wrapped my inside door handle with electrical tape as video says it will flake and cut your fingers.Oh also the trunk lid isnt sealed very well.Always digging leaves, sticks, and dirt out of the trim.I won't part with mine and bought it new in 2013.Most powerful V6 in its class back then and still quicker than sports cars a decade newer. But I do have mods.Diablosport Intune, cat back exhaust, cai.
I bought the '08 2.0 VVT w/manual transmission last october for 3000€ (CA$ 4,400). It's my first car with approximately 330,000 kilometres right now and I have to say, I really do enjoy it. No issues with engine nor any other mechanical parts, just the automatic window controller keeps getting stuck. Any ideas on what mileage could the car last?
Good Video. Very helpful. I am in need of a new vehicle. I currently have a Dodge Caliber with 279K miles on it. It has been reliable. But nickle and diming me now. There is an Avenger near me. 2013 SE with the 3.6 in it. I looked at the carfax. All oil changes and recommended maintenance has been done regularly. I am thinking it is a good deal??????? Reading comments here it seems like everyone has had good experiences with this car.
I Bought my 2013 Dodge Avenger in March of 2019 with 89,000 mi for 7 grand ! havent had any major problems at all ! i currently have 114,000 mi. she is a Gem🙂

Only issue were replaced the original battery in 2020 and and front bearing and speed sensor in 2023.Was getting an ABS warning. Now I am getting a wining noise from the back when driving found out is the rear bearing. I want to keep this car. Should I replace both bearings?
I have a 2008 Caliber with the base 1.8L and a 5 speed manual transmission and crank windows, the only downside is the hydraulic clutch and the rocker panels are rusted out but otherwise it has been solid. I was considering a dart for my next car but I am leaning towards the avenger instead.
Great video for people who are looking to buy one. I have a 2009 avenger and was hoping I could get your help. It was raining one day and I pressed the brake. It seemed like the anti lock kicked in right away but then all of a sudden the pedal went all the way to the floor. I replaced the brake reservoir and added fluid but the pedal still goes all the way down any idea what else I need to replace.
Thanks for the valuable information. I am now considering a 2008 SXT with 143,000 No rust, super clean interior, but I'm just worried about that mileage. Does this engine have a timing chain or belt, and is it a concern at this mileage?
Great! Thanks! Timing BELT on my 2008 VW Bora GLI (I'm in Mexico) broke and caused me a total engine rebuild. After shop rebuilt the head, the car developed oil consumption from a damaged Piston, so we rebuilt the bottom half of the engine. Car still didn't run right. Sold it cheap to get away from it. 3 years of endless problems, mostly electrical.
I love Dodge Avengers I want one for my first car, my mom purchased a crystal blue Pearl 2013 Dodge Avenger SXT V6 flex fuel in 2014 and man I loved that car.
I have a 2014 avenger Engine always used to shut off on me but there was a lot rust on my wiring ect. Cleaned it all off and works fine now..should I be worried??
The 4 cylinder engine had a wire harness about an inch thick that ran across the engine and would chafe on the back corner of the head and cause some electrical problems!
I love how they look but I heard a lot people say they were cheaply made like the PT Cruiser cause I had my eye on one that had the setup like a bumble bee yellow with the stripes it was so cool but someone talked me out of it and I got a Honda.
I've actually been eyeing the Avenger as what might be my next knock-around when my '03 PTC finally decides it's done (though that is starting to seem quite some time away.)
Have you made the video about changing the heater core on the avenger? And does the technique work for the a/c evaporator? Thought the video was real good.
I got a 2008 with the 2.7 and they said the engine was bad. Compression tested and 2-6 were all @150 but cylinder 1 was only 70. I took it apart and it had just one exhaust valve that was a tiny bit bent. Replaced and reassembled. It’s quick and should run a lot more miles. These are all simple cars. Only thing I don’t like is where the battery is. The rest is fine.
water pump is in the oil pan and when the seal goes bad antifreeze gets into the oil That is why the 2.7 is known as the sludge engine. Keep a close watch on your oil and if you see the oil starting to look like a milkshake get it to a service person right away. If you continue to drive it you will ruin the bearings and the engine will be toast.
Hi - I've someone selling 2016 model with 267k km on it -- selling for 3500 -- needs ebrake and rr knuckles to pass safty test -- how much will repair cost? Should i consider it buying ?
Usually you don’t replace the knuckles, just the bushings in the knuckles. There’s three of them in a kit from rockauto for less than $30 per side plus 2-3 hours labor at most shops. $3500 seems fair!
Looking to buy a 2008 Red Avenger with 80k miles on it as my first car! Owner says it has no issues and drives perfectly, going to test drive it soon! Good choice to go ahead and make the purchase? it'll be around £2k.
I am inclined to agree to a point. You see, most mid to low middle class families aren’t in a position to pay the higher retail prices of the Japanese cars. I’m just trying to show decent alternatives. Oven if it is for a short term! Thanks for sharing
No mention about battery replacement. You should have told people of it's location, and inform them to replace it while the weather is warm if they live in an area that has cold winters because it is no fun siting on the ground for an extended time in the snow in January. Show its location and inform them that Advance and Auto Zone will not change one.
Sure it sucks when you have to change it, but it’s not like it’s a persistent problem with the car like the rear suspension! The battery is easier than having to change an alternator or starter!
2011 2.4l avenger owner going on 190k miles and can attest to most of this in my experience! aside from basic stuff like brakes and the battery, i replaced the alternator this past spring, the thermostat housing maybe 3 years ago, and wheel bearings over a year ago as well. fairly certain i have the heater core issue currently, would be helpful to see how you said you replaced yours from the dash. also have some suspension bushings worn out and should be replaced. other than that the motor and transmission have been strong still for 14+ yrs old
@@OldeCarrGuy Thanks for weighing in -- I appreciate it - maybe you could do a comparison video lol - well thanks for your input it is good to know about other cars other than Toyota and Honda - those are so expensive now
It depends on the year. The 06-09 Fusion is preferable to the 08-10 Avenger as the early years suffered from some cost cutting from Cerberus. The Fusion in its original form was very reliable especially with the 3.0 duratec and Aisin 6 transmission and hydraulic steering. Remember that the early Fusion was very heavily based on the Mazda 6 which had been on the market starting around 02-03 so by the time the Fusion started most of the bugs were fixed. Starting around 10-12, the Fusion started having problems as Ford dropped the bulletproof Aisin 6 speed for the 3.0 duratec and used their joint venture 6F35. The early years of this had shift flare issues. They switched to electric steering (look up the EPAS problems). Also the rare Sport model has the 3.5 cyclone V6 which has a timing chain driven water pump which can go without warning (note the Chrysler 2.7 had the same design flaw). Around 11, the Avenger was updated showing FCA having added an increase in investment in the build quality and using better materials. The Avenger by this point has most of the bugs worked out of it in the 4 cylinder application. The Pentastar was new for '11. My understanding is it wasn't a common problem, but they were known to at times have head issues. There's also the plastic oil filter housing that you have to be very careful not to overtighten as it is very brittle. 4-cylinder would probably be the safer bet. They came in either the four speed or the six-speed transmission. To summarize, The earlier years a fusion would probably be more reliable, the later years The Avenger would probably be more reliable.
Let me ask in your opinion are there any Hyundai are Kias that would make good used cars? Some people luck out with them some people don’t it would be good to get your take on it - thx
We sell a lot of Elantra and Forte. Great cars. Some had engine issues, but Kia and Hyundai both have replaced the engine for us due to this known issue at no cost and out of regular warranty. Lets see GM, Ford or Dodge do that!
@@OldeCarrGuy Um i know several people personally who have been f ed by hyundai / kia. All Are made cheap end of story for me. Their recall history is horrendous
I have a 2014 avenger 2.4l and it keep misfiring run like a brand new car one day then the next few days hard idol or crank any pointers on the problem I literally changed everything there is to think of under the hood it’s not the motor for sure
Check the main wire harness that crosses the front corner of the head on the transmission side of the engine. It’s known to chafe through the harness and create a short.
Likely a failing door lock actuator. It keeps thinking the door is opening when it’s not and triggers the alarm. If it has a remote starter that’s not factory installed, it too could be messing with security!
I had a 2012 Dodge Avenger, and it was the biggest piece of junk and money pit. Keep in mind it was only bought with 13,000 miles on it there we're constant mechanical issues with these, not just mine... I will say to replace the heater core and blend actuators is very costly and timely.. as well the engines nor transmissions are very good on these, it was not even originally designed as a sedan it was a sports car like a poor man's viper so too say
Sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with you. Not because I sell a pile of these things, but we do service them as well and not once have we ever had a engine or transmission failure in the 15 years we've been in business. Are they perfect? Of coarse not, they have their issues, sure, but so does every other manufacturer out there.
@@OldeCarrGuy I wanted to jack it up from the center (subframe) until I came across videos pointing out the faulty subframe on the Avenger. There’s quite a few videos online. Thanks for your videos and fast response! I just subbed to your channel.
18 inch alloys are a deal breaker. I just do not understand why people think the bigger the tires the better. Damn it people stop and think. The bigger the tire the more expensive they are. Replacing those tires will cost a fortune.Hell I don't even like the price on the standard 17 inch tires. So no thank you bye. On to the next lot.
Wrong. At least where I live. There is a major jump in price when you go to an 18 inch rim. You buy then then because I just walk away. Besides around here big hoops are known as N Wheels. You decipher that.
A moving expressive hand is a technique people are incorporating these days. IMHO a distraction. Others may not agree with me just wanted to give you another perspective.. @@OldeCarrGuy

I love how they look but I heard a lot people say they were cheaply made like the PT Cruiser cause I had my eye on one that had the setup like a bumble bee yellow with the stripes it was so cool but someone talked me out of it and I got a Honda.
Just like most domestics, they are cheaply made in comparison to the Japanese brands!
Thanks Mike. I haven’t done a video on the heater core but there are lots out there! The evaporator is not the same!
Love it. Could be the best of a bad lot.
If by bad lot you mean anything domestic, you might be right! lol
Go for it!
@@OldeCarrGuy Appreciate the reply! I shall.
I just bought a 2014 Dodge Avenger with 76k miles two days ago
How’s it been treating yah?
I would buy it.
I did! Several times!
I have a 2014 dodge avenger replaced alternator, window motors and master switch
Minor stuff!
Hey do you know where the starter relay is located on an 08 Avenger?
Unfortunately, do not have a specific relay for the starter as it’s built in the computer.
I wish I was getting a tax return to buy that beauty. First time in 26 yrs we get to pay... 😤
I am inclined to agree to a point. You see, most mid to low middle class families aren’t in a position to pay the higher retail prices of the Japanese cars. I’m just trying to show decent alternatives. Oven if it is for a short term!
Thanks for sharing
@@OldeCarrGuy well said. I've been trying to respond coherently but could figure out The right wording
Is the 2014 Dodge Avenger reliable??
In my opinion, yes. As I mentioned in the video, they have common issues, but they aren't detrimental.
2011 2.4l avenger owner going on 190k miles and can attest to most of this in my experience! aside from basic stuff like brakes and the battery, i replaced the alternator this past spring, the thermostat housing maybe 3 years ago, and wheel bearings over a year ago as well. fairly certain i have the heater core issue currently, would be helpful to see how you said you replaced yours from the dash. also have some suspension bushings worn out and should be replaced. other than that the motor and transmission have been strong still for 14+ yrs old
Here's a summery of what we do: th-cam.com/video/iWucnEBROOk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2YnTrQQoZgCDaiDB
How does the avenger compare to Ford Fusion? Which would say is more reliable? Thx
Which of the two cars ride and handle better?
I've always been partial to the Fusion overall.
@@OldeCarrGuy Thanks for weighing in -- I appreciate it - maybe you could do a comparison video lol - well thanks for your input it is good to know about other cars other than Toyota and Honda - those are so expensive now
I think the Fusion might be more comparable to the Chrysler 200 than to the Avenger.
94k miles 2009 avenger SE w the v6 2.7l engine for $5500? Good?
Seems high for an 09. I’m a dealer and I currently have a 12 on my lot for less than that with 150k miles. But my market may be different than yours!

I don't recall singling you out, but if the shoe fits! lol
@@OldeCarrGuy do you have any thoughts on the Sante Fe and the Sonota? which are the better years and engine choices?
How about the Hyudai Azera and the Vera Cruz with the 3.8? and the KIA Sorentos are they OK as a used car? thx

@@OldeCarrGuy will do I’ll report back when I checked it .
2011lux V6 dodge avenger how to stop alarm from going off?
Likely a failing door lock actuator. It keeps thinking the door is opening when it’s not and triggers the alarm.
If it has a remote starter that’s not factory installed, it too could be messing with security!
@@OldeCarrGuy How do i stop it?
@@zmamii69 You'll need to have it diagnosed properly. I can't make any suggestions without seeing the car. Sorry!

The rcr avenger review offers a different opinion on this car
made me laugh so I subbed
Much appreciated!
No!
Nobody mentions the faulty subframe?
I’m not sure we’ve ever replaced one and we live in the salt belt!
@@OldeCarrGuy I wanted to jack it up from the center (subframe) until I came across videos pointing out the faulty subframe on the Avenger. There’s quite a few videos online.
Thanks for your videos and fast response! I just subbed to your channel.
Much appreciated sir!
Oh Hell NO!
Prices aren't THAT much higher. 17-18" are the new norm when it comes to tire sizes.
Wrong. At least where I live. There is a major jump in price when you go to an 18 inch rim. You buy then then because I just walk away. Besides around here big hoops are known as N Wheels. You decipher that.
Your hand is blocking the view of the car.
My apologies!
A moving expressive hand is a technique people are incorporating these days. IMHO a distraction. Others may not agree with me just wanted to give you another perspective.. @@OldeCarrGuy
