    I have a 2008 avenger. I've had it for almost 6 yrs and it has over 200,000 miles. I can honestly say that aside from a couple alternator issues, mechanically this car has been extremely reliable. The high mileage is mainly due to my 1hr both ways commute. Knock on wood, but my car is still going strong today.

      What have you done to maintain the car? Frequent oil changes? Replace the air filter every so often?

    • @runnergo1398
      @runnergo1398 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MG-lz5nw Always change the oil when it should be changed. Always change the air filter when it should be changed. Change the air filter INSIDE the car, too. Make sure there isn't anything clogging up the air vents outside of the car. Lots of tree leaves and nuts can fall on them. They are right there at the bottom of the windshield. Flush radiator. If AC/Heat is not working properly, you might need a new blend door actuator. There are three of them. Look up videos for that. There are tons of videos on youtube about the Dodge Avenger for practically everything. Also, if you are looking for parts, websites like RockAuto might help?

    Right now on the used market there's a few important things to note. A top end Avenger will run you about the same cost as an early V6 Charger. Basically you can choose between the top end Baby Charger or the low end real Charger. I skipped both and went with a 300C instead, which is basically a Charger RT with comfier seats, but for $2-4K less and lower insurance cost.

Upon deciding it had more sentimental value than let it go to the shredder, I agreed to take it. As usual, a very thorough and interesting review. It's a shame they let this car go for the Dart, because this could have served as the platform for the pony car competitor to the mustang/camaro. Imagine this with beefed up suspension and turbocharged V6, or even a 5.7 hemi? Then slap a "Cuda" badge on it with some retro styling and it would have sold like crazy.

    I have not been a fan of my 2009 Avenger which I've had for about 4 years. I've had problems with the A/C, battery, electrical systems, anti-lock brakes, window regulator, and the engine housing. Not to mention the blindspots are pretty big.

    • @thurstonrider
      @thurstonrider 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ashley, you are right about the blindspots on the Avengers due to the narrow back windows. However I've driven tons of American cars with bad blind spots so it's really not anything new. Blind spots became less severe in most cars from the 80s and 90s but they were pretty bad in cars from the 60s and 70s in which Dodge just happened to continue.

      Really? I didn't even think of the converter. At one point, I was getting that lightning bolt message on the dash. I replaced the throttle body.
      I resolved that, but I was getting something else. Took it to Advance to get it scanned, and replaced a sensor. It ran fine for about eight days, and something else happened on the freeway. I barely limped home with it. Got it in the garage. It was misfiring. It was also winter, and I had another vehicle to drive, so it's been in the garage, waiting for better weather.My plugs were fouled, and one smelled of gas, so I replaced that boot, along with all of the plugs. No more misfire, but I get a blinking check engine, when I go above about 2.5k RPM. I'm thinking the sensor I replaced failed. Not sure. I'm going to buy my own scanner, and take it from there.

I had a 2000 Dakota that was an absolute nightmare and ended up being sold basically for scrap after 10 years or so. But this Avenger has been the most dependable vehicle I’ve ever owned. Im currently on my second Avenger, the first was a '11 V6 heat model and the current is a 2012 R/T. I absolutely love this car (Hence why I bought it again after the first one got totaled). Being a car enthusiast I was already aware of it's "reputation" before getting one but that bias went right out the window after I test drove it for the first time. The V6 model was soooo underrated, I wasnt expecting to like it as much as I did and I think my favorite aspect of the car itself (aside from the sound system in the R/T) is and will always be the Penastar engine! Ive never been too crazy about the transmission but that V6 is plenty powerful (torque steer is a bitch) and the engine note is savory. Long story short, the V6 model is truly a bang for the buck. My R/T model was purchased used at 50k models for only 10,500 dollars certified pre-owned and it offered all of the features I actually cared for. Definitely worth checking out if you want a cheap, fairly reliable car thats fun to drive. In 2.5 years Ive gone from 50k miles to 131k miles with only one hiccup (heat started blowing out cold air at 120k miles but was fixed)

    We have a 2009 Avenger, SXT 4 cylinder. Purchased new. The car has just about every option available on top of the line luxury cars that cost 4 times what we paid. Heated and chilled cupholders? Move over BMW. Traction control and anti-rollover system? Move over Infinity. 32 mpg? Move over Detroit. Heated seats, remote start, auto climate control, the list goes on and on.
    We did blow a head gasket (twice) at 100,000 and 150,000 miles. The second time they replaced the engine AND intake system and even covered the cost of a rental car for two weeks.
    Alas it is to the point that we no longer need to be a 3 car family. It's unfortunate because it will cost 3 times more to replace it than I will get for it.
    We have owned 4 Dodge/Chrysler vehicles and have put new transmissions in two of them (minivans). The other had front end problems and kept wearing out ball joints. We took a chance on the 2009 ONLY because of the powertrain warranty and it proved to be a wise decision.

  • @dansw58

    I had bought a brand new 2000 Dodge Avenger. Mine always served me well accept I did notice it did feel weak for a V6. It felt more like a 4 cylinder with the time it took to accelerate. I finally got rid of it in 2008 or so because I needed to replace the exhaust system and it was going to cost a lot because at the time the car was discontinued so the parts were expensive. But I got 8 good years out of it where I didn't have to do much besides oil changes, occasional break jobs, and new tires. The only other annoying thing I remember about it was that the windows went right up into the car. It was not the kind of car that had a frame around the window, it was done like the windows on a convertible. If you put the window all the way up while the door was open and then tried to shut it the window wouldn't close to the rubber seal, it left a space. You had to make sure to always close the windows while the door was closed to make sure it set right in the rubber seal and didn't come up too much.

    I've got a 2013 sxt. As far as the looks go, its pretty sweet looking. I've had quite a few comments about how it looks like a charger, only smaller. My biggest issues seem to be that even though the video stated the handling was awesome, mine handles like crap, specially in winter months. I had an issue with the rear suspension bouncing, and the back end swaying back and forth when hitting even the smallest bumps in the road. naturally, i changed the rear struts thinking that would fix the problem, but still have the same issues where i can feel every single bump in the road, and it seems to toss the rear end around, almost causing a "fishtail" like effect. if i had to rate the car (being ive owned it for almost 4 years now), Id give the looks and style an 8.5 out of 10....its a really sharp looking car, but as for the handling and control, i'd only give it about a 4 out of 10. Being i live in ohio and the winters can get pretty sloppy, i was told by the salesman that it would be perfect for winter driving, which it is not. It handles horrible in winter driving.

    The Dodge Avenger might've been a great car if they put function over form. One of my roomates has one, and I constantly have to mess with the wiring due to things constantly being rattled loose from their pizza delivery job. it's also one of the 2008 stock with a ton of problems that we can't afford to fix, which is why they got stuck with this car to begin with. The problems are thus.
    HUGE blind spots, causing a number of close calls on the road with pedestrians and smaller vehicles.
    Brake light sometimes comes on during acceleration and stays lit until the car is turned off.
    Cruise control only sometimes works and may disengage without warning.
    Radio pops and buzzes randomly, if sound is heard at all. I've been too lazy to remove the 5 plastic panels needed to access the wiring so I can make sure they're properly connected. Basically would have to pull out the entire center console to get in there.
    Passenger door window does not work, stuck in such a position that it whistles loudly on the highway.
    In fact, the only thing that works on the passenger door is the handle.
    Driver door must be slammed shut to latch, otherwise it might fly open during driving.
    Check engine light will turn on for a few minutes before turning off again at random intervals.
    And finally, the worst thing about this car:
    The engine has stalled with full electric power loss at least 3 times while on the road, before coming back on and resuming as if nothing happened. Should be noted that the driver put it in neutral and was frantically turning the key until power was restored, since each time was in the middle of traffic, once with someone kissing their bumper and pushing them down the road during the entire incident, making pulling over impossible.
    How this thing passed inspection, I will never know.

      @@missourislave7963 wait for the electrical issues to start popping up. 😂 better start studying how to find the weirdest issues that make your car literally not run, including the red dot of death(the security system can spaz and shut your car down). The Avenger is garbage. Mechanics will tell you not to buy American made because they are garbage engineering.

    You should do a video on the Dodge “Attitude” and “Vision” as well as the Ram 700. I was recently on vacation in Mexico and when I saw those cars I got super freaked out cause they’re dodge but I had never heard of them. Would be cool to get a more in-depth look at them from your perspective!

    The first Avenger was based on stretched 2nd generation eclipse platform, there was also a 2nd generation Avenger based on stretched 3rd generation Eclipse. The second generation base model had a 2.4 4g64 i4 engine which has allot of potential.
