Hi ken I really your version of this song, I have good chest voice but my head voice is not that good, the last note your belting is a transition from chest voice to head voice, I just cant do it please help,
Hey Ken, I like how you sing this, especially since you consider yourself a high baritone. When I was younger, I was able to easily Perry's range (in most cases), along with Bradley Delp. I've been singing all my life. Unfortunately, I'm nearly 60 and would love to get it back if possible. I spent years on a CPAP machine and wonder if that robbed me of my ability. I've been hanging around your forums and may opt for one of your programs if you think there's hope :D
It's an advanced way of relaxing the throat and tongue, and moves the tongue out of the back of the throat in order to create more space for greater resonance.
Journey is such a once in a lifetime band that had the greatest vocalist of all time. Hard to do a cover, but you really did Journey proud on this one. Great cover man!
I also feel steve perry is the greatest ROCK vocalist of all time, glad to know im not the only one who holds that belief, although arguments can definitely be made for freddie mercury & chris cornell, steve was simply, just Above all the rest
Ken, you're a killer vocalist. I've seen a number of your videos now. I do notice that on your vowels you have a very unique tongue placement. It's pointed, and I don't know if that happens naturally for you as a mouth shape or if it's a conscious decision. You have great vowel sounds so I wondered if it was purposeful. Thanks for the upload!
Lou Gramm was Foreigner's original vocalist. After hearing this I wish Lou and Steve Perry had replaced each other. Neal Schon is a Hard Rock guitarist so Journey was always a bit heavier than Foreigner but not as heavy as Styx got!
YOUR time is here, YOUR time is NOW, start singing better than YOU ever thought possible, today! We’re here to tell you, you CAN and WILL nail it, KTVA will get you there! kentamplinvocalacademy.com/christmas-sale/
Always enjoy listening to someone else singing these great classic and awesome tunes. Always a pleasure to hear someone who can actually show us how to sing, even if we might be a little weak.
Yes, I agree. Steve did sing pretty much exclusively with a R&B, smooth voice on the early Journey albums. Then, along comes the much harder sounding Frontiers " album in which Steve now has to grow accustomed to singing in this new style - wearing on his voice much more significantly than the previous 5 years of Journey album tours. Great points you mention in this video Ken. Maybe this contributed to his interest in 2 solo albums right after Frontiers and after Raised on Radio - to get back to the more soulful and R&B based singing.
Here we stand Worlds apart Hearts broken in two, two, two Sleepless nights Losing ground I'm reaching for you, you, you Feelin' that it's gone Can't change your mind If we can't go on To survive the tide Love divides Someday love will find you Break those chains that bind you One night will remind you How we touched And went our separate ways If he ever hurts you True love won't desert you You know I still love you Though we touched And went our separate ways Troubled times Caught between confusion and pain, pain, pain Distant eyes Promises we made were in vain, in vain, in vain If you must go I wish you love You'll never walk alone Take care, my love Miss you, love Someday love will find you Break those chains that bind you One night will remind you How we touched And went our separate ways If he ever hurts you True love won't desert you You know I still love you Though we touched And went our separate ways No Someday love will find you Break those chains that bind you One night will remind you If he ever hurts you True love won't desert you You know I still love you I still love you, girl I really love you, girl And if he ever hurts you True love won't desert you No, no
Good Morning Ken! How are you? I have a few song suggestions for you. Can you please do "Don't Stop Believin'", "Message Of Love", "Send Her My Love", "When You Love A Woman", "Who's Crying Now" & "Lights" by Journey please? Journey is my all time favorite band, they're number 1 on my list. I'm a very huge Journey fan & I love Steve Perry.
Is it live or Memorex ??? KT does David Coverdale and now Steve Perry !? Master voice - just absolutely fantastic ! So extremely clean ! Arnel Pineda needs to be replaced by KT !!!
😃 Hi Ken, we all know you're awesome, especially with the high notes you hit at the end but, did you see Omar Jose Cardona singing this song on The Voice?
Try with Michael Kiske Vocal range, "I Want Out" from Helloween, it´s a very hard song like separate ways, can you do it? i think i will a very surprised to hear it Ken Tamplin
Hi, i'm back :D i'm doing the course and i'm learning i want out now :D of course there is many more things to work like vibrato and articulation but i nevermore had problems reaching these high notes my range is actually (G2 - G5), very heady voice yet but im working on developing a good tone first, i reccomend the course
Walter Melo Was there any chance you could sing "I want out" before? I‘m also thinking about buying the purchase, but I‘m not sure if I can manage to master those head voice/mixed voice techniques/bridging as I usually have a lower voice and even the pre-chorus of the song is too high for me to sing in full voice.
Very well done. It's not Steven Perry its Ken tamplin and you made it your own I truly appreciate that. To many times people expect it to sound just like the original.
Steve didn’t really lose his voice, it just got more raspy and it got more weighty which meant that the top notes weren’t as easy for him overtime, partially from over-touring and partially from age since the voice tends to get deeper and more mature with age. By raised on radio he was 37 and by trial by fire he was 47. But it wasn’t like Robert Plant or Elton John where he had to get surgery. Maybe if he had used a more chesty mixed voice then his voice would have sustained better, but he probably wouldn’t have gotten the sound he wanted.
Steve Perry is a lot better than Jon Bon Jovi who sadly can’t hit the same notes like before. The Eagles’ one of the very few bands or i should say vocals who sound better as they’re older.
John gatti0- without a doubt you can... the voice is a muscle (actually a group of muscles), and like any muscle in your body, with good training will grow even into your 70's. Obviously not as quick and robust as in your 20's, but grow it will if you are willing to put in the time and effort with proper training. My course and or training will definitely help you if you're willing to work at it!
It's really not weird. It's just a vocal technique that not many are familiar with. This is the most relaxed position of Open Throat Technique. First you train the tongue flat to the base of the mandible, then concave to the jaw, then in its most relaxed state itwill protrude away from the back of the throat creating maximum space in the back of the throat for perfect vocal tract shaping (as well as using it in place of hard consonants and glottal stops which become problematic and constrictive especially when singing hard rock). Maybe that's why birds sing all the time so well.
Amazing Ken.. there are a lot people that don't quite understand, like singers do, how tough Steve Perry is to cover.. not only the range but the amazing emotion in that range.. great take on it again Ken
since I had no money when I was a kid, Ive never seen Journey with Perry, but I have seen them with every post Perry singer, including Jeff Scott Soto. Ive seen Dean Castronova do this song and tear it up, and watching him play the drums to this was awesome. Amazing version from Ken as normal. I think this came out in 1983... I wore this tape out on the old Walkman also:)
I can't sing, really I can not. But love listen how you sing all those different styles/ A big Journey fan here and I really enjoyd your version of Seperate Ways. Youre Painkiller version from Judas Priest is my all time favourite!
I was so happy to come across you just now! I haven't seen you for several days and wasn't sure why. Maybe because I added a few more subscriptions for different topics?? I don't know! But, I missed you and this sounds fantastic! I loved it!
Once I subscribed to your channel, I unsubscribed to other vocal coaches' channels since they don't give the proof in the singing. You are awesome, Ken!
Man, you nailed it. You could of stepped in and helped Journey out.good job.I believed every word you sang. Very professional. I play bass and keyboard I can tell you did your homework.again good job bro.
I don't comment on youtube videos and I have the singing talent of a snoring ox but jesus christ can you sing. I love this song and your singing is unreal! Holy crap man... amazing! 👏
Wow Ken! 3:39 & beyond. Was reverb used? I was in the Army in Germany, when l met the Journey fellas Sept 1980. A Bay Area gal sees & meets Bay Area Boys for the 1st time in Europe. I was their FORCE fan club “European Prez”. Steve’s crisp voice was chest voice I believe, which will mess with one’s vocal chords in an upper register over time. I’ve been waiting to practice your KTVA 1st CD as l talk 8 hours for a living 5 days a week & l’ve had laryngitis for THREE WEEKS, taking Musinex. I love to sing with the radio & haven’t been able to. I’ll get busy when my allergies calm down & allow my voice to begin practice. Don’t wanna hurt my built in instrument. Love your cover of this tune. Thank you! ✌️🤟🎶🤓
I just discovered your Christian rock...why oh why didn't the radio stations in Dallas play this stuff? Back in those days it seemed like Petra was the only well known Christian rock band of quality and even their good stuff wasn't on radio. Your music was right on par with the big names on mainstream radio...I feel robbed! Glad I found it now...going on my playlist.
No disrespect Ken but it appears you carry tension in your tongue. I’ve always read and heard that the tongue should be resting flat and should only be used for enunciating consonants, but during vowels should be somewhat at rest. Obviously the E vowel you need the back of your tongue raised a little.
Man, you put a little extra on the end of that song. It still sounds awkward to hear you do covers but the work really displays your ability. Thanks, Uncle Brent
Hey, Ken! What's your all time favorite Journey song? Did you know that the song "Lights" by Journey was originally written about Los Angelas, California but since Journey was from San Francisco, California Steve Perry changed the city to the bands hometown which is San Francisco.
Hi! I was just searching Separate ways covers here on TH-cam and came across your video. Im going to cover this song and this was very helpful! Thank you!
Hey I have a question, so I’m 15 right and I can sing (in chest) to a G#4 if I’m really opening my voice and F#5 in falsetto. When I’m done going through adolescence will I ever be able to work back up? I’m a decent singer now but I’d really like to be able to sing high like all the other male singers
Culum Goetz- This is a great question for me free vocal forum. You can ask all of your singing related questions and get great feedback. forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com
Sometimes the rawness and poor technique of a singer adds to the power of the song, but of course no one wants to know they're losing their voice while they learn to sing, so I'm not actually advocating for untrained singing.
This is the hardest song i sing in my bands repertoire haha Its just so taxing vocally lol. Especially hard when im a bass/baritone and have to somehow sing this lol! But using parts of your course have definitely helped me!
Just an observation, Steve doesn't go very tight. It seems he just keeps the warmth in his voice. It's a very otherworldly kind of sound. I'm honestly not sure but I'm convinced there's not a lot of head voice happening even though it's counter-intuitive. He's probably the only guy that sings like that. Lol anyway, love your version and love this song. ❤❤❤
THIS IS SO GOOD OMG. YOU ARE SO GOOD. I WISH I COULD SING LIKE THAT...... YOU ARE MY FAVOURITE MALE SINGER!!!!!!!! NO DOUBT!!!! WISH EVERYTHING GOOD FOR YOU FOR YOU KEN
Been binge watching your videos last few days. You are incredible! His about singing Zeppelin "no quarter" or maybe a Maynard James Keenan song? You'd rock them!
Mona- Regarding my tongue: This is the most relaxed position of Open Throat Technique. First you train the tongue flat to the base of the mandible, then concave to the jaw, then in it's most relaxed state it will protrude away from the back of the throat creating maximum space in the back of the throat for perfect vocal tract shaping (as well as using it in place of hard consonants and glottal stops which become problematic and constrictive especially in hard rock singing).
Amazing Ken. I will be joining you soon. I have ups and downs.. where I can hit high registers some days and other days not. Need help..lol. Been singing and screaming rock and metal for 20 years. Your great man, keep it up. Enjoy your videos.
I was in a metal band called point blank from long island NY. Was best known for our cover of the devil went down to Georgia. Hope you can check it out and a few other tracks ty Ken. Appreciate it. :) Stay well my friend.
I'm going through the entire playlist you provided through your 'free lessons' newsletter for 'advanced vocal techniques'...and I'm loving all of these videos all over again...YOU TOTALLY ROCK...LOVE YOU!!! By the way...hehehe...there always seems to be a 'by the way' in my comments...sorry about that...but I just happen to have uploaded a Journey cover of my own that you might like...'Lights' (and also one from 'Three Dog Night')...also, when are you coming back with another Live Stream??? ❤❤❤
OMG! You're not a singer, you're a monster! How do you dare to sing those high notes??? Bravo, Bravissimo!!!! You're such a tenor!!!
He is baritone actually!
I got a lot of requests for this song. I hope you like it. I look forward to your comments and requests! Please Like and Share!
:-)
One of my favorites growing up too! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family KT (Warm greeting from your bro in Ohio!)
Thanks, jcoulter43, and Thanksgiving Holiday greetings to you and your family, too!
can you please do one on gerard way

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy awesome
He's the Lizard King, he can sing anything.
Wolf Jay Robert California?
That's his super power.

"How we TOUCHED and went our separate ways..."
Rebel Heart ❤️
If a person can sing like that, he must do it. Very strong, very beautiful.
Thank you, Rihsat!

He can sing, no doubt, but you can hear that his tongue gets in the way of his pronunciations.
This cover is everything, you’re vocals remind of Steve Perry, which nobody can recreate. Amazing 👍
KILLER ENDING!!!! Gave me goosebumps
Thanks Joshua!
Wow. Never heard of Sam Cooke. I can hear the similarity in Perry style of voice. Amazing. Your vocal is powerful. Thanks for sharing all the insight.
Thanks for listening, memyselfandeye2 MARTIN!
Sir I want you to cover Faithfully (journey) and The Messenger-Chester Bennington
yes please
Love your cover a lot of this Journey's song I enjoyed it and I'm Shooked when you start belting those high falsetto. Urrghh You ROCK!!!!!
Thank you. Rock on!
Ken Tamplin sounds like the original lead vocalist for Foreigner. I always hear Foreigner even when he sings Journey.
@Jonathan Rose Wow I didnt know that.
Funny enough I always thought the same thing. He's got a few Foreigner songs on here
Agree
Lou Gramm was Foreigner's original vocalist. After hearing this I wish Lou and Steve Perry had replaced each other.
Neal Schon is a Hard Rock guitarist so Journey was always a bit heavier than Foreigner but not as heavy as Styx got!

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy what mic and shock mount do you use in the video?
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy best cover I’ve ever heard!

Here we stand
Worlds apart
Hearts broken in two, two, two
Sleepless nights
Losing ground
I'm reaching for you, you, you
Feelin' that it's gone
Can't change your mind
If we can't go on
To survive the tide
Love divides
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you
How we touched
And went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched
And went our separate ways
Troubled times
Caught between confusion and pain, pain, pain
Distant eyes
Promises we made were in vain, in vain, in vain
If you must go
I wish you love
You'll never walk alone
Take care, my love
Miss you, love
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you
How we touched
And went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched
And went our separate ways
No
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you
If he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
You know I still love you
I still love you, girl
I really love you, girl
And if he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
No, no
Ken, I am a believer. Yours is the best training on the net. THIS WAS INCREDIBLE!!!!
Oooohhh JOURNEY a long time favorite OMG
Great job Ken! As you know, following Steve Perry is no easy feat, but you did awesome.
How the hell can I sing like this
Good Morning Ken!
Wow! Thanks for all of the great requests, McKinzie! It's plain to see that you just LOVE Journey! They have such great songs!
damn you nailed that one Ken, did they ever consider you for the gig to replace Steve ?
You would be surprised to know the actual answer to that question.
AWESOME!!! You're really cool, and your voice can do so many things!!!!! Thanks for this cover!!!!
I saw him. He sang with his own style despite losing to emotional vibe.
Try with Michael Kiske Vocal range, "I Want Out" from Helloween, it´s a very hard song like separate ways, can you do it? i think i will a very surprised to hear it Ken Tamplin
I would love to see Ken Tamplin do a "How to sing like michael kiske" :)
Years this and stratovarius would be good
Hi, i'm back :D i'm doing the course and i'm learning i want out now :D of course there is many more things to work like vibrato and articulation but i nevermore had problems reaching these high notes my range is actually (G2 - G5), very heady voice yet but im working on developing a good tone first, i reccomend the course

I‘m also thinking about buying the purchase, but I‘m not sure if I can manage to master those head voice/mixed voice techniques/bridging as I usually have a lower voice and even the pre-chorus of the song is too high for me to sing in full voice.
"How to sins as Geoff Tate" would be much more interesting.
awesome! I was waiting for some Steve Perry material...
Thanks, Victor! Glad you like it!
Very well done. It's not Steven Perry its Ken tamplin and you made it your own I truly appreciate that. To many times people expect it to sound just like the original.
Thank you!
Another great cover,ken.god bless u.for next 6 month i try anylize steve perry vocals.and u r always my source information.thank u ken
Rubbish!!! He's still the voice
Steve Perry is a lot better than Jon Bon Jovi who sadly can’t hit the same notes like before. The Eagles’ one of the very few bands or i should say vocals who sound better as they’re older.
Unlike those others, Steve actually took care of his voice. That kind of grueling schedule and challenging repertoire would age anyone's voicem
ヘビメタギタリスト登場!🍒Good video!💯💯
Wow , impressive and , The high notes at the end I wasnt expecting but you delivered flawlessly! Great job Ken
Thanks Culley!
You r great sir but you also can't replace Steve

How we touched and went our separate ways
this guy is a freaking vocal genius!!
Kin tamplen is the best and excellent mentor thank professor share your teacnih
You are very welcome!
Ken...there's something about Steve's voice quality that is magical...just curious, can an older singer recover their range?
John gatti0- without a doubt you can... the voice is a muscle (actually a group of muscles), and like any muscle in your body, with good training will grow even into your 70's. Obviously not as quick and robust as in your 20's, but grow it will if you are willing to put in the time and effort with proper training. My course and or training will definitely help you if you're willing to work at it!
He's using his tongue like a bird. So weird and fun to watch. :D
Well, I'm amazed now. I love the answer you gave to that silly commet as much as I love the cover. Thank you!
Amazing Ken.. there are a lot people that don't quite understand, like singers do, how tough Steve Perry is to cover.. not only the range but the amazing emotion in that range.. great take on it again Ken
Steve Perry raised that bar so high! Such a voice, txtamaman!

I Enjoy your emotions with your singing!! Love it . One of my favorites of Journey .
Amazing!! Could you analyze Still They ride? That song is one of my favorites.
I’d love to hear you perform Steve Perry’s Foolish Heart, please?
PegiNestor That's a good one.
damn i can really hear the David Coverdale influence that's uniquely "Ken Tamplin"

Ken, nice but challenging song. Technically. The vibe is very emotional...
Can you teach me how to sing a rock song??
Holy shit this might actually sound better than the original. Thats not by any means a simple feat
One of the most difficult voices to try to cover'...this guy did a great job
I don't comment on youtube videos and I have the singing talent of a snoring ox but jesus christ can you sing. I love this song and your singing is unreal! Holy crap man... amazing! 👏

Ken Tamplin EXCELLENT cover ! Steve Perry would be proud or jealous , either way you nailed it .
Thanks Mike!
u make me singing for 24hours! awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoa I didn't expect him to not just nail this but kill this in amazing way😮
No disrespect Ken but it appears you carry tension in your tongue. I’ve always read and heard that the tongue should be resting flat and should only be used for enunciating consonants, but during vowels should be somewhat at rest. Obviously the E vowel you need the back of your tongue raised a little.

Hey, Ken! What's your all time favorite Journey song? Did you know that the song "Lights" by Journey was originally written about Los Angelas, California but since Journey was from San Francisco, California Steve Perry changed the city to the bands hometown which is San Francisco.
Well, Lights is a really good song. Obviously, I like Separate Ways. You can't name a Journey song that I don't like, McKenzie!.
I know, right? All Journey songs are really good! All of Journey songs are my favorite Ken.
A little crack in a lyrics love you girl, but still you sing it great sir..
Great job Ken! I'm always impressed with anyone who can cover Journey! Those that can are few and far between
Magnificent ttttttttttttttttt....music is life... Ken toppppp,💙👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍
Thanks for the visit, Antonello!
This dude can sing his ass off.
This was no Steve and definitely not Arnel. Arnel's only problem is his accent. Without the accent no comes close to matching Steve than Arnel.
Order in Chaos- Not trying to "Sound" like either. Only demonstrating their stylings.

This is the hardest song i sing in my bands repertoire haha Its just so taxing vocally lol. Especially hard when im a bass/baritone and have to somehow sing this lol! But using parts of your course have definitely helped me!
You have a fantastic voice. I would love to be able to sing like this but know my limits. Can’t stop listening to this!! 🔥
You can do it! kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
All i can say is WOW!!!!
How It is Very nice.wonderstand Voice ❤
THIS IS SO GOOD OMG. YOU ARE SO GOOD. I WISH I COULD SING LIKE THAT...... YOU ARE MY FAVOURITE MALE SINGER!!!!!!!! NO DOUBT!!!! WISH EVERYTHING GOOD FOR YOU FOR YOU KEN

Thanks for your kind comment, Dancingkay! I'm glad you found me! Stick around. I have lots of videos like these.
Amazing singing but good grief... the tongue has a life of its own going on in there.... I had to close my eyes and just enjoy the song. Ewwww
Mona Martin- This will explain the tongue, th-cam.com/video/9N-y-wC1sxQ/w-d-xo.html
Mona-
Regarding my tongue: This is the most relaxed position of Open Throat Technique.
Thans, Alan!
I was in a metal band called point blank from long island NY. Was best known for our cover of the devil went down to Georgia. Hope you can check it out and a few other tracks ty Ken. Appreciate it. :) Stay well my friend.
