Hi Ken! I'm not questioning the originality of the vocals but I thought some of these were prerecorded, then filmed later? I had seen that one from Sarah and it seemed enhanced and I thought it couldn't have been a live take (?) Another channel I watch said you were friends with Steve. True? I see you inching to a million subscribers 👍
The videos are made as we record the live vocals in one continuous take. You are watching them sing live, as the camera rolls. We bring the original video shot in closer for these How To Sing Like videos, but that is the only difference. It's the same live video footage of the original live recording we made, taking up half of the screen, cropped a little bit to center on the vocalist. I haven't met Steve. I was, however, asked to audition for Journey after he left. It turned out that I did not audition, because I would have had to go on the road for a 5-year contract if they chose me. I just couldn't leave my family or take them on the road for that long. I would have missed out on 5 years of important time with my family. Several other bands you would recognize made similar offers to me at that time.

Sara Loera is awesome. She needs to find her own signature songs ASAP. Love hearing her sing Journey. She should work with the band. That version of Open Arms is awesome also, though it could use some toning down of the style, since the song is so brilliantly written, it needs nothing extra, but her tone is phenomenal.
Kens singing program is worth every penny. You will not be disappointed if you truly study what he is teaching. There was one huge key in one of his videos that was truly priceless. I sang professionally for 6 six years and developed nodules on vocal cords from singing four hour sets 4 to 5 nights a week. Now twenty years later I picked up singing again but learned what I had done wrong years before. Now I no longer fear the high notes learned how to relax instead of tensing up and hope I hit the note. Ken is truly the best. The craziest thing my vocal coach back then looked unbelievably like him. That guy was trained under Clint blacks vocal coach. But while I was giging Every night was impossible to practice.
Every video you put out, I learn more and more. Journey is my all-time favorite band, and being able to sing "like" Steve Perry is a high bar indeed. Great job with your students Ken!
I'm fortunate I got to see Steve with Journey in 1986. He was at the top of he game then. I was a young teen and really liked Journey but didn't appreciate Steve like I do now. But I can tell you. The videos on TH-cam doesn't really give him alot of justice. Maybe a couple. But the guys voice is a instrument all its own. Randy Jackson was the only exception the the famous lineup then. Each guy a very accomplished musician. But you could have cut the instruments and just listened to Steve the whole soul. Like Coverdale. No one does his songs quite the way he does. Props Ken!!

I had tickets to Steves Solo tour that he had to cancel i think in 92 : / . never got to see one of my biggest inspirations ...i can tell you though Jimi Jamison was incredible live though and imo those two are a couple of the greatest vocalist of that time .Sad to see Jim go .....God bless you guys .
That was an awesome tour! It was one of the first live shows I saw as a teen. His voice was still SO strong, but there were a couple tiny cracks showing at times... probably due to 80s excesses. My first show in '86 was Stevie Nicks... a textbook example of 80s excess! Fun show, but her vocals were terrible, and she was a hot mess. Glad she recovered!

So, I'm about to listen to this video (as I prepare to try and warble my way through Open Arms at a karaoke event tonight). I wanted to thank you for a particular observation you made, which I kind of instinctively knew, but didn't really focus on: you can move, seamlessly, between chest voice, i.e., "belting it out," and head voice, which I take to mean falsetto, and back again, without feeling like you're cheating or it's a sign of weakness. Seeing how, for instance, Joe Elliot, the lead singer of Def Leppard, moves from a growling chest voice to a kind-of growling head voice was an eye-opener, and it would make attempting a song like Photograph a lot easier than if you tried belting it all out from your chest. So, thank you for that! And now, I'm gonna try and pick up some tips for Open Arms, lol.

@RunninDownDream he never got nodules. He creates vocal characters for his songs. You can clearly hear it on his solo albums. Some velvety, silky others more gritty with rasp. That’s why I can listen to him all day.

Hi Ken,
Loved this episode--Steve Perry is one of my all-time favorites.
Really like what you say about open-throat singing and that all the vowels up top are versions of "ah".
I was classically trained and have been trying to fuse my classical training with other styles of singing. We always were told that up top, everything is a shade of the "uh" vowel as in "on the up-and-up"... with all vowels 'uh' [" *un* thuh 'up-'nd-'up'"]
This that you added that Steve is singing with a "French" nasality really brought home a new conception for me. I lived in France and speak French fluently, so now i can take both concepts... the ah/uh openness and the French nasality... and access a new timbre in my high range.
A cool exercise is singing French words with that ah/un nasal vowel like: un, lundi, mange, ange... up in the high register after singing them two octaves down in the fry register.
You have a great voice and seem to be a good teacher.

and wow, these girls can sing, amazing!
Thank you!
@RunninDownDream he never got nodules. He creates vocal characters for his songs. You can clearly hear it on his solo albums. Some velvety, silky others more gritty with rasp. That’s why I can listen to him all day.
One of my all-time favorites! I would love to see you do one on Darius Rucker (Hootie and the Blowfish and solo country singer). He has also dabbled in other genres amazingly! His versatility is incredible!
great video mate, u r carrying some good vibes believe me. Keep it going.
Ken Tamplin ❤️❤️❤️ this guy is awesome!
Didn’t think u could pull this one off. But that was damn good. And Damn the “Sinika” girl “spelling” I’d buy that version today. Damn she’s good. AWESOM INTERPRETATION of that tune.
Love Journey Thanks Happy Monday !!!
Have a great week, Christine!

Very good work both Ken and Kati... Got to listen to the rest later.
Thanks, Modafinil!
Thanks Ken. One of the few vocalists my voice is just not suited for. Been listening to some Benny Mardones. Please consider this incredible singer.
I will, thanks.
Great vid showing the different styles 😀 I don't know why but Sara always turns my brain to jelly and melts my heart ? 🤔 She's got such a powerful voice and sings with such meaning and sincerity 😊🤗🤗😎
Glad you like them!
