    Okay, I'm a left leaning Independent. I don't always agree with everything from those in this community...but this situation in particular always baffled me in regards to those who are against those labeling themselves as, "they/them". Growing up, I've learned that you can indeed call someone "they" in certain situations. Like, if I do not know the 'gender' of someone, like someone who made my custom cake, I will say something like, "they did a great job making this". The word isn't always used to talk of multiple ppl...

      They walked up to the door.
      Are you now stricken with confusion because you don’t know if they have a dick or not?
      They can be used as a singular person. It’s been that way for as long as I’ve been speaking English.

    • @umbralflow6883
      @umbralflow6883 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@trappedinamerica7740 They is used when the person is unknown to you. Once that person is known you then use he or she. To use They/ Them in all cases would make conversation odd. Mind you your doing this when talking about someone who isnt there. So its controlled speech on behave of that person. So you have to hope whoever your talking to understand what you mean. Yes They/Them can be singular. But a lot of people have moved away from how the trans want them to be used which is to be used in all cases. No one is going to get use to going back to old english like that. The issue with They/Them is the confusion that comes with it that could have been avoided. In some cases it will work and others you have the person assuming more than one person. Trans only looked at They/Them skin deep and ran with it. They didnt think of the many uses of it. Now there will be times people think your talking about more than one person. Because thats whats wildly used. I could go around asking people if their gay and I mean gay as in another word for happy but most people wont see it that way. Grammar is always evolving to be more efficient. This only back tracks on that.

      What about this

      Am I talking about the wife or her friend. Proof that she:her makes no sense am I right????

    • @umbralflow6883
      @umbralflow6883 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because you said "my wife said her friend" which mean the following sentence is referring to said friend and because you use the pronoun she it is implied to be a female friend. When you said she is nice, it is referring to the friend. It's alot harder to do it with he, him, she, and her because to use it you have to establish a person to tie it to which will be 1 person. They and them is different because it can be used in the plural and singular form. Singular being widely use in old english and faded out. I could call people gay and mean happy. Because gay ment happy back then. But if I asked today in modern times if you are gay. What do you think the response would be. Words change over time and they/them could very well go back to its old english usage. I doubt it because of the confusion it brings. Not worth the effort when she/him can be use with little to no confusion. It would have been better to use a different word other than they/them. Make up one singular pronoun but only 1 and stick to it.

    They/Them as singular is used when gender is unknown to speaker, not because a person does not like or want to acknowledge their true gender. This makes more sense and is more logical than people randomly choosing their pronouns. It IS confusing in many circumstances because we still use they/them in plural as well. Even if it wasnt confusing or stupid, people dont want to change language unless there is a really good reason. Being "binary" is not a good reason to most people. Its not even a thing to most people. Why? Bc you cannot escape being either male or female, you just can't. Nobody wants you to not be able to, you just can't!

    I had a “they/them” friend throughout high school. Even though it’s technically grammatical correct for singular use, it only works in certain social situations otherwise it’s unclear. You have to constantly clarify and it gets even more confusing when you are talking about multiple people along with the person. This is why this pronoun doesn’t actually work, because in English you shouldn’t have to constantly clarify what you mean.
    The actual correct gender neutral pronoun is “it.”

      It's only grammatically correct when referring to a single person when the person's gender is unknown or ambiguous. It's analogous to the way that we use plural nouns for the number 0:
      I have 2 cups
      I have 1 cup

    For the importance of clarity, I would like to provide my outside opinion. I have a cousin who uses they/them pronouns and it has always been difficult for me to maintain utilizing them, though I do try. The reason I have always had challenges with this is because: my brain is screaming at me that I am being disrespectful even though I know it's their preference. I was raised to respect and treat people as individuals, so using a mutli-person pronoun feels like I am discounting them as an individual worthy of their own merit. Conversely using it would be reducing them to something less than sentient. Truely what I wish to see happen is for one uniform gender-neutral set of pronouns to be agreed upon that is unique from the already existing language. Trying to introduce hundreds of different pronouns or reutilize existing pronouns to have new meanings or rules is just going to cause confusion and backlash. I believe that a compromise to just 1 set of gender neutral pronouns could be achieved and accepted by people on both sides.

    Here we are in 2024, questioning how many genders there are. (Technically there are 2 y'all)

    • @tomd96
      @tomd96 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Gender is not the same as sex.
      Sex is what you are assigned as, biologically from birth, depending on the pair of chromosomes you happened to be born with.
      Gender typically refers to masculine/feminine in terms of language, the greek and latin languages that english took root from also have specific terms for people that were neither of these.
      These two are not to be confused with sexual orientation.
      If you wanna take the high road and go "there's only 2 genders," that is incorrect, grammatically and factually.
      Gender identity is a relatively new concept in the history of humanity though. The first trans person to legally change their sex was in the 1930s.
      In this case, they used the term "transexual", not "transgender", because their sex was changed to reflect their gender identity.
      I think part of the problem stems from how people have appropriated certain terms despite their original intent.
      Like the term "cis" has popped up to denote "sex same as birth", the creator of the word didn't want it being used to create a divide between transgender people and others.
      And now it used almost exclusively to point out the difference between them.
      Plus, it just sounds nasty. Like a cat hissing. Not a huge fan.
      I believe that respect should be earned too, but it's not all that hard to treat others with basic decency.

      @@vinito19 Yes, neo-pronouns do exist, they are rare in instances outside social media (they are tricky for people new to them, or non english speakers.) but yeah, people can feel identified by those too!
      Really, respecting other people's pronouns is how we as a empathic society works, we made up words to put people in boxes so we could categorize them better in our brains. This like the concepts "women" "men" are just boxes we as a social species made up in language to represent group of ideas. Why is so impossible for us as a society to evolve and categorize people in a different box for those that don't feel represented in the boxes mentioned before? It's not like the ideas of "blue is for boys and pink is for girl" is biological to our species, it's just how our society has evolved.
      I'm gonna tell you this very respectfully, I don't know what goes on in every trans person's brain, I'm not every trans person after all. But most of us aren't trying to feel special or unique or for a trend. If there's an increase in our generation of people identifying as queer, it is because of our society's growing acceptance, and more people are willing to identify themselves freely, thing that years ago wouldnt have been that easy at all. But I assure you, anyone that is trans for a trend, wouldn't keep the act for more than a year, gender dysphoria is very likely to get up to them. Believe me, no one would want to be trans, we just are.

    i personally wouldn’t change my pronouns bc that is not smth i believe in or completely agree with, but i will 100% respect the ppl who do. we can have different beliefs and that is completely ok, and we both deserve each others respect. with that being said, if someone who doesn’t have the same beliefs as u is trying to understand ur beliefs or for example calling u by the wrong pronoun, but genuinely trying to be respectful, u shouldn’t get mad at them bc they are not obligated to feel exactly as u do on everything.

No wonder no one takes them seriously. Let’s face it we all use they/them unknowingly in a singular way even before people started identifying as such, so when conservatives say that, they look like they don’t know how to read 😂

Regardless of whether you think grammar has anything to do with it, that point is still correct. They is plural and singular. Saying otherwise is stupid. However I will give you some credit for the liberals and conservatives part because I consider myself liberal but also have a lot of unpopular opinions about the gender discussion. Let’s be real though, it is primarily liberal people that subscribe to gender ideology and conservative people who do not, hence the word “conservative”. Their outlook on life is far more traditional when it comes to gender roles. I also never said it was anyone vs anyone. You’re lying to yourself if you don’t see that it’s primarily liberals that subscribe to gender ideology and conservatives who do not. Of course there are outliers just like everything else in life.

      The problem is that while "they/them" can be used singularly, it isnt used singularly in the same context as these non-binary (attention seeking kids) use it in.
      For example, if I refer to someone as "they" Im still refering to that "they" with the knowledge that they are a he or a she, not that "they" is entirely seperate to the he or she it is in reference to.
      Its not hard to understand, and the answer should always be No when kids feel entitled to dictate what adults can say just because some new identity or fad dropped.

      Ok, I'm not a native English speaker but I think I kinda found a solution. The solution is... Basically using They/them pronouns following almost the same principles you use already for singular You and plural You.
      imagine this: you have a group of friends and one of these friends is also using singular they/them.
      Now when you are addressing one of your friends using singular you, what you do? I think you would probably say something like "hey you, [insert friend's name]"... By specifically naming your friend, you are already making clear who is the subject of your attention. Almost same thing happens with they/them.
      Example: "[insert friend's name who uses They/them pronouns] here, is really good at math, they are like a human calculator". If you are using their name it becomes instantly clear who you are talking about.
      Almost same stuff with plural You and plural They. With plural You, you probably use something like "hey you, all of you". with "All of you" being used you are making it clear that you are using it in a plural way. Now apply this to plural They (although in this case you are probably going to introduce your group of friends to another person). So you probably should say "this is my group of friends, they are awesome" or "all of them are my friends". By using "all of them" you are making it clear that they are already more than one person. And, if you choose the first option, you are already establishing a subject by calling them "my group of friends", so after that you can use they as a plural pronoun.
      I probably made this more long and more complicated than it actually was, but I thought that explaining the thought process behind it and also making some examples would help.
      In any case, the solution in short is: use a subject before using the pronouns. "Group" or "my friends" could be a subject and describes plurality. [Your friend's name] could also be a subject and addresses their singularility.

      @@puffbairImagine thinking your pronouns make you interesting. Nobody past the age of 20 thinks youre interesting because you use "different" pronouns, we all recognize you as the people that havent done anything to be interesting so try to find labels to make you interesting, which never works.

      @@uh-ohspaghettio7826 never said pronouns make you interesting. I’m saying that people get confused with their “identity” so they think that changing their gender, pronouns, sexuality, etc. Will fulfill them. It won’t. Pronouns are simply 2 words you identify as. You are either a She/her or a he/him. There is no in between. You physically cannot be a they/them. You and yourself are one person.
