I immigrated in the USA 44 years ago.
The process was long and not really friendly but once inside the people were welcoming and the overall atmosphere was positive. In the US I finish my education, worked and raised a family.
Things have changed drastically since 1980. Workplaces are no longer friendly and are full of "boy's clubs". Businesses are mostly owned by corporations in which the only valuable product is Profit. I see a Nation deeply divided, a population proud to be exceptional but lacking exceptional virtue, an economy not competitive on an international level and largely supported by the US $ hegemony. This is utterly unsustainable.
China has the potential to overpass the US due to the reasons Dr. Mahbubany described so well, yet I do not believe China is interested in overpassing, just to be on top. China is interested in cooperation and mutual benefits.
All China has to do is to foster peace, continue developing quality at the grassroot level, avoid speculations and in general, avoid following the US lead.

I dont think China is trying to compete with US.. I think China is trying to survive and do their best. Even if US did not exist they will still be trying to do their best. They built the major cities not because of America... They didn't build the great wall of China because of America. They built it before America existed. They built their cities because they want to change within the country. They will work for self reliance to protect themselves from sanctions and not rely on countries who sanction them not because they want to beat US. They are just protecting themselves so they are not stuck by sanctions which would make their people suffer again like during the opinion war.

It took the USA some 248 years to get to where they are today, while China came out of their self-isolation some 43 years ago to get to where they are today.
As it is, a lot of the people in China are already living in futuristic cities & the way of life that Westerners are still imagining & dreaming about, and based on the current trajectory, it's very obvious that China will become even more technologically advanced in the next 50-100 years.
The USA has a major handicap in their ever deepening political, social, racial, and economic divides which makes it very difficult for them to adapt and to adopt the very necessary changes required in our accelerating technological world.
There is absolutely no doubt that China will far outpace not only the USA but the rest of the world in technological advances in the decades ahead.

I reckon China after such a long time of turmoil, is happy quietly building up her economy + infrastructure and wherever possible, assists those who are interested.
If US thinks China is a threat, US is very wrong as so far nothing has shown that China is interested in replacing US.
China doesn’t even allow her currency to be freely open as presently less than 5% of RMB is trading outside of China.
Be that as it may, China’s outer space program or 5G or accuracy of Baidu or EV or high speed rail etc. have had gone beyond that of US’s who invariably and imaginatively has deemed that China is a threat.

The problem with the US, after almost 70 years and spent $35 trillions to dominate the world,
it can't survive if it is not the unipolar power. Because those money will come back home to roost hyperinflation.

Prof Mahbubani left out a crucial difference: In the US, most, if not all, of the "innovations" are geared towards short term rewards and profits. You will not get funding in Silicon Valley if your project cannot make money in a few years. China, on the other hand, have the long views based on strategic planning rather than tactical manuver and they have smart people to carry it out.
One example, a decade ago you could not get anybody in the US to seriously invest in solar and battery research while China invested heavily. Fast forward today, China dominates in solar energy, battery, and EV. This is happening in most of the tech areas.
BTW, China is not behind in AI. While US hyped apps like ChatGPT and exaggerated the power of GPU, China is quitely working on the far more important AI in industrial applications.

    • @choykong7190
      @choykong7190 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yes America WAS a great country of innovations ... mainly due to the influx of foreign brilliant brains .. which the Chinese are a great contribution to ..
But today it's on reverse... mostly due to racial discrimination and segregations. Thus the brain drain train is on. Of course China is the receiving end...going home . !! A brain drain society would not last long .!

  • @SlippingFlipping
    @SlippingFlipping หลายเดือนก่อน +19

he is correct but there's a reason how the US took that position, and that position is the reason why every single corner of earth struggled from India to Singapore. US growth comes from China itself. Chinese people endured enslavement, racism, prejudice, violence, injustice while laying down and connecting rail roads all across America. Rail ways was the driving force for every sector of US economy and that's how Chinese people was able to start immigrating to the US. You could say it was the start of Asian immigration to the US and it started with Chinese rail road workers. Without China US might have been in completely different position. So when it comes to any talks in relation to US growth you can't leave out Chinese people. Today you can't find history of America anymore. American people have no idea what is silk road, what was the first inventions by Chinese people the world can't live without especially America which one good example was the gunpowder. America rewrite history without any shame. Now American history teaches it was France that invented gunpowder. America also teaches that it was Christopher Columbus that first founded empty land without people of America. Empty land it says. It goes even deeper. American history teaches they brought the enlightment and created this wonderful nation in the history of mankind and says they even had to spill blood and sacrifice while defending freedom from "savages' that roamed America the land without people. Who was the savages? it was obviously the owners of America, natives which in their minds land has been infiltrated by strangers they have never seen before. Also, was it really Columbus that was the first who discovered America? Well, there's clear evidence that it was actually the Chinese that came through America way before Columbus and there has been many newly found relics that supports the claim but that topic itself has now been almost banned in US. You are a conspiracy theorist if you even bring it up when it was the US itself that brought up this revelation decades ago. I can go on and on and on and yes, we can say US is definitely ahead in many areas, but without being honest on how they got to where they was does not hold any weight. It's very superficial growth, and I look at it as a women that looks really good but you know underneath all of that change is nothing but plastic, metal and silicone. I'm not saying my point is the only valid point and is not, but no matter how you slice it and dice it that very attractive looking lady is not really someone I would marry, but you might. If the success story comes with real reflection and truth, respecting mistakes and stand for new straight future than the US can be the US it could really be, but by design it will never be, and it can't be when you still have hostages all across the country with blood on hand that is still only dripping thicker. That is the honest truth for me. America in the inside is rotten to the core.

He mentioned the debate between Trump and Kamala as some kind of strength. This is ridiculous, they did not debate on policies, instead they were bad mouthing each other. Trump lied so many times and expected not to be fact checked. The highlight of the debate was Trump's claim illegal Haitians (actually they have legal status) were eating the dogs and cats of residents. The divisiveness, the political polarization, the out of control debt and unwise allocation of financial resources will lead to America's inexorable decline.

Now, with the fast global dedolarisation, going forward spells the beginning of a decline in US dominancy/hegemony. True, that nobody wins in this contest if the Thucydides Trap reigns. We pray that the contest is friendly, otherwise the whole world loses in a nuclear holocaust.

Let's keep in mind that the USA was relatively unaffected by WWI & WWIII and their companies grew filthy rich from supplying manufactured goods to all the countries that were affected by the two world wars. At the same time, their militaries became the most powerful in the world too and the USA found themselves in a position to do basically whatever they want around the world.

China is producing more STEM graduates than the US. Also, giving the example of debate between Kamala & Trump as an example of bringing out the ‘best’ is just bogus, since there is a rigged system for two party system. What a joke.
The Chinese universities are in the top schools globally in Engineering. No doubt the US has one of the best engineering and science schools, but you can check the global rankings and will shock you how many Chinese universities are there. Having said this, the US is a sought after destination for bright students from overseas, but a large number of those students were coming from China and they elect to go back since they get better and high paying jobs in China.

The notion of a China-USA rivalry, where one nation's success must come at the other's expense, is dangerously over simplistic. This binary thinking echoes the flawed assumptions of the Cold War era. The Fermi Paradox - which questions why civilizations self-destruct - serves as a cautionary tale. In today's nuclear, interconnected world, cooperative governance, not adversarial competition, ensures global security, sustainable development and the advancement of human civilization.

Wrote this a while back but applies to this subject:
At age 64 (2015) my Canadian friend who at that point had lived in China for 17 years convinced me to come see for myself how advanced China was in infrastructure, technology and morality compared to our country of Canada and any of the 5 eyes countries.
So I spent 6 months in SE Asia exploring with a Canadian friend who had lived there for 17 years.
The lies and propaganda just can't compete when you go see for yourself.
As a Westerner who believes all the propaganda do you ever wonder how come such an evil empire as China has not dropped bombs, not invaded, not sanctioned, does not Assassinate other countries officials and yet your country (so morally superior) why do you do all these things or at minimum support the US as they do all these things?
Do you ever ask yourself that? Do you ever wonder why America (land of the free) has more prisoners than any other country in the world?
Do you ever wonder how China pulled 850 million people out of poverty while America gave all it's wealth to the 1%.
Do you ever wonder why walking in downtown America at night is seriously risking your Life while walking in any major cities in China day or night is perfectly safe?
Do you ever wonder how China can give 1.4 billion people free education and reasonable regulated healthcare with the right to choose between traditional Chinese medicine or Western medicine, while in America most people can't afford health care?
Do you ever wonder why a single party country with 1.4 billion people have a government approval by survey of 90+% yet not a single 5 eyes countries or NATO countries can even achieve 50%.
Do you every wonder why elected politicians don't represent the people who elected them?
Do you ever wonder why a country that "we say" oppresses their population has 155 million citizens travel abroad and they all come home.
Lastly do you ever wonder how a country that has achieved so much has not had a single positive news article in the new York Times or the Wall Street journal or any of the major networks?
If you don't wonder about any of these things, then you probably think your not bombing Syria to steal their oil, your not sanctioning Venezuela to control their oil, your not sanctioning Huawei because they are more advanced.
You probably also believe Edward Snowden is a traitor rather than a hero, you probably think the war crimes Chelsea Manning revealed were justified and you probably think Americans are still the good guys.
Perhaps get a passport, go see the truth, redemption is still a possibility.
    - Vic Toews CC

However, the strengths of the US that he rightly points out remain significantly more substantial than the energy of 1.4 billion Chinese and deep-seated grievances stemming from China's century of humiliation. While it is important to acknowledge the challenges the US faces, as reflected by the ongoing presidential election, the American system has consistently demonstrated a remarkable ability to recover and adapt. If it could manage to do so again in the next four to eight years, it would likely maintain its leading position for the next couple of decades.

I managed to grow a nest egg of around 120k to over a Million. I'm especially grateful to Adviser Ruth Ann Tsakonas, for her expertise and exposure to different areas of the market.

I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of
information can be a big hurdle. I've been
making more than $100k passively by just
investing through an advisor, and I don't have
to do much work. Inflation or no inflation, my
finances remain secure. So I really don't blame
      people who panic.

The question is not whether the US will lose, but when. And more importantly, will the US go down quietly or take the entire world with it.

This is a war between perseverance + tolerance versus impassivity. When Obama visited CHINA during his first term, he was so shocked n just couldn’t believe his eyes. Every major cities he visited was so vibrant with sky high buildings brightening the night sky with LEDs.So unimaginable, he must be mumbling, how could they make it in just 30 or 40 years, whereas it may take the US , maybe 100 years or + .Subjectively, one was so much obsessed with wars n the other obsessed with development + infrastructure + technology etc etc. Thus we have the strong tussle now between these 2 great powers. But eventually, what goes round comes around. Just look at the BRICs n the Chinese Belts n Roads Initiatives. So effective.

But prof Mahbubani about all those Indian in the US. It's beneficial for US, but all capable Indians are not helping India to rise as China. Or atleast very very slow.
If most capable Indians did that also like China, then there were 3 powerfull countries, mabe even only China and India, because US is most dependend on China and Indian expats.

Individuals are drawn to the most conducive environment, this can be replicated. If one place deteriorates, another one will rise up to take its place. It is just a place anyway, it is the people who make the place. The US absorbed a lot of Jewish and European migrants post WW1 & WW2, China can do the same in attracting talents from all over the world in this century, it is just a matter of government policy. Just my thought.

US has some advantages. But their political structure is becoming weak.
They keep on printing dollar. Their public and defense expenditure is out of control. Though the dollar is the world reserve currency their dept is out of control.
