The reason China needs to modernise its military is because it faces genuine potential threats from the United States and its allies (e.g., India, Japan, Korea, UK, etc.). China has not forgotten the "century of humiliation" when the Great Powers of the 19th century descended on China like vultures and carved her up like a turkey. These Powers included Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, and United States.
The USA encircles China with dozens of military bases. The USA conducts naval exercises near Chinese waters. The USA sells arms to Taiwan. The USA challenges China in its own backyard more than 7,000 miles away from the US mainland. How can you blame China for preparing militarily to counter the United States?

I wouldn't say dozens of military bases , I would say hundreds , 200 to be more accurate and growing , all situated between the first and second island chains around china , it is the reason why China has militarized the south China sea to stop the USA blockading china if it came to conflict , also building the belt and road to create trade routes bypassing us naval power...if you examine China's action in the context of security , you immediately understand China's dilemma and why it acts the way it does.

Very well put. The example of the Vietnamese underscores the sincerity of their desire to cooperate and promote mutual understanding: their country was utterly devastated and almost completely destroyed in the war with the US, which somehow decided to take the reins after the Vietnamese ousted the French. Millions died, and the Vietnamese endured our bombings for over a decade. And yet they harbor no ill will toward us and wish for peaceful relations. If anything, it is Americans who still have hostility, thanks in part to Hollywood movies and the media, and to politicians who somehow feel the need to create enemies. We should reject those politicians: they are tearing humanity apart.

I grew up thinking that whatever America did was for the betterment of mankind. They saved us in World War 2. So when they attacked Iraq, I automatically thought that Iraq was a bad country, but I had no idea why. Same with Afghanistan, Vietnam etc. Then even with Libya at first I went along with the narrative. Qaddafi wore strange clothes and funny sunglasses so he deserved what he got! Then I thought about how ridiculous that idea was. It began to dawn on me that I was brainwashed. I re-examined my previous assumptions and I couldn't honestly justify any of the American wars, but instead began to see the horrors and injustices of the postwar American policies. Most people have been brainwashed, it is possible to break the spell but I think it needs a shock so hard that it can break through that wall. After the fall of the USSR, Russia tried to build alliances with the west and become part of the system but was rejected. Why? Because the West needs an enemy, needs an emergency so that people don't ask too many questions and those at the top can make profit.

The Hawaii analogy is interesting, given the history. The descendants of US missionaries began growing pineapples but were restricted by not having enough land. Their solution was to appeal to the USA government, which very conveniently came, overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy, and the rest is history.
The 'Banana Wars' in Guatemala were also a case of the American banana growers wanting the land so the USA government helped to overthrow the government and replace it with one that would deprive the peasants of their land and sell it cheaply or even give it away. Today, those peasant's descendants work for subsistence wages on what should be their own land. The huge American companies such as Chikita now own pretty much all the productive land.

The problem isn’t politicians. It’s business interests and trade. The US fights wars to loot gold, oil and control resources of other countries. It starts and fights wars because it sells weapons. It’s a very outdated model one would expect from empires in the old days.
Unless the US finds a more lucrative business like AI and technology, it will continue to use this old and outdated model, with blinders on, while China manages to become the superpower and new global order.

This describes my feelings towards the US as a German perfectly. On the one hand I like the American people and also a lot of their culture. But politically they are dominating my country. Now if the US was thriving that would be tolerable, but with their two party system they keep shifting more and more to the right without an option for people to vote for change on foreign policy. At the same time the US bombed my countries infrastructure (not proven but very logical) so they can sell their oil and to force our hand on the Ukraine war. It’s unacceptable, and I suspect might be to change after achieving military independence.
What happens in Gaza just shows the entire world just how corrupted US politicians have become and by extension their dependent governments in Europe like Germany

Nah, Ukraine took out the pipeline. Stop falsely accusing the USA, wingnut.
Nonetheless, it really doesn't matter in the long run, as Germany's is going down anyway no matter what. In fact, everyone with any brains already knew that the decade of the 20s would be the decade when Germany met its demise. As Germany has more people in their 60s today, than people in their 50s, their 40s, their 30, and their 20s. Whose fault is that? America's fault too, wingnut.
Meanwhile, what happened in Israel and what is happening in Gaza is par for the course for the Islamic totalitarian world. As Gaza, who has been independent, autocratic, and self governing for the past 18 years, has invaded the sovereign state of Israel for the purpose of waging jihad against Jewish non-Muslim unbelievers. Not because of real or perceived grievances it has with Israel, but instead to wage a jihad in the cause of Allah per the Koran.
Moreover, Hamas jihadists have proclaimed that the violent jihad attacks against Israel will be repeated again and again and again by Hamas.
Thus, Israel has no other choice but to totally and completely eradicate Hamas. Otherwise, they can look forward to many more violent jihad attacks.
Moreover, because Germany like loons permitted mass Muslim migration with all of its excess baggage premised on the fantasy-based UN narrative that Islam is somehow a so-called Religion of Peace and in which is laughable, like Israel today, Germany has a pretty bad jihad problem of its own manifesting inside Germany today as well.
And you know what, wingnut? That jihad problem will only get worse and worse as time goes on. Because the Muslims with their four wives will easily out breed the Germans who can't even breed enough to maintain their own society.
Meanwhile, other than send two carrier strike groups to the Mediterranean Sea in the event they are needed, exactly what has the USA done with respect to Israel that illustrates that US politicians are so corrupt, wingnut? Are you delusional?
In fact, even though US troops in Syria and Iraq have been attacked over 70 times by Iran, the USA's only response has been four little pin pricks.
If I was Joe Biden, Iran's nuclear weapons installations would have already been obliterated after the first such attack on American troops. Biden, unlike Donald Trump, is a wimp, just like the German people.

Another point is that China understands the West more than the West understands China based on the number of students learning each other's languages.

The problem is in Europe is the fragmentation, the US, Russia and China takes advantage of that fragmentation for their own ends, there are solutions to solve that in Europe through the EU, but a lot more of the countries are going to have to be more bold in integrating in key areas of forign policy and military matters so it becomes harder for outsiders to play them off each other.
Basically, the divisions are making European countries seem a lot weaker than the economics suggest, but if they pool their resources together and speak with one voice through the EU, European countries would have a lot more clout and do their own thing.
As for the US, they want the EU countries to spend more on the military as independent countries, it's easier to control them and play them off each other, but I highly doubt the US would want the EU countries to pool resources together and speak with one voice on forign policy and military matters, that would make things most costly for the US, whiles turning interest away from the US, it would also likely turn many countries that don't like the US to look towards the EU, once that option is open, a lot can change, for now, a lot of countries fall behind the US because they don't see an alternative, Russia and China are not alternatives that are appealing, the EU could be if the countries get their act together.

We can’t even agree on basic things, it’s all denying problems existing or scapegoating people. Our political system is fucked and it’s gonna drag a lot of countries down with us. It feels like our foreign policy is to keep threatening to do a “school shooting” on the world stage until countries call us their suzerain. I feel like America used to be about the mixing pot, the american dream, rights+freedoms, and the equality of all people here, but we really stopped even pretending that’s our goal a long time ago. Would you really want to live under the rule of China, that ranks something like 187/190 for freedom of press, criticism of the government gets you disappeared, absolute destruction of the environment, pollution levels that in one day are a thousand times the recommended yearly limit, and absolutely no recourse to do anything about it? America isn’t perfect and I get why a lot of countries don’t like it but it’s the best option we have. China has built up a political system from scratch. I mean even if you go back to Mao, he was an academic and a great thinker. They have built on it and corrected their mistakes. The US' mistakes are baked into their system and immutable. China is becoming so smart that its technology will accelerate ahead of the US where any military attempt would be successfully defused. There is also the Us debt to consider. It's going to run out of money so like the soviets the people will start uprising.
