As a new person into Lightburn engraving/cutting, your videos are spot on for me! You don't speak like John Moschitta (Remember the FedEx guy?), you talk to us like you are right there explaining things to us. Thank You!
I just finished a batch of stitch markers for my wife, single sided coins. After this video I realized that had I placed a sheet of paper underneath I could have flipped them over dropped them back in the circles and made perfect two sided coins. Thanks, Rich!!
I was having trouble lining up my wood with the laser .This fixed that issue I was having so easily!!! Thanks again Rich for all the awesome information!
I’ve been doing it that way for months. And I’ve explained this exact method, although not using a temporary piece of cardboard, to people in the Facebook groups.
Another excellent video. I have created a foam board template which is made of 1/8 inch thick foam board. I then pinned foam down to a backing board. I burned 9- approx. 4 inch circles into the foam and removed the off cuts. Now all I have to do is drop the coasters into the circles of the foam, line up the graphics inside the tool path for the 9 circle grid and burn. Remove the coasters from the foam drop in 9 more and burn again....
I am new to laser cutting but like you I keep my scraps. I've started designing things like book nooks, miniatures and dollhouse furniture. Those scraps get used!
I do this method too, but with the Kraft paper method, I'd actually cut the rectangle out completely so the wood is resting directly on the honeycomb. Less residue on the back of the wood.
My new laser does not have a laser pointer. When I'm done with the project I hope for the best and prepare for the worst because it's never 100% right. This is a genius solution. 😃.
I’m a technologist and will be getting my XTool D1 Pro tomorrow. Subscribing to your channel as your tutorials are great for me getting started in this hobby. Cheers!
Wow another great video showing a technique that really works! Especially when it comes to saving materials! When I was a newlywed in my early twenties that was one thing my wife made sure of! I never wasted good wood! I made a bassinet for our son from reclaimed and saved wood! Did I mention him too? 🤣🛫
TERRIFIC!! I could write a long treatise to explain how helpful you're making the laser engraving experience for us, but suffice it to say, "WELL DONE!" and "HIGH FIVES" Thanks!
Perfect! I’m a diode user that uses a honeycomb bed which covers my waste board. I’ve recently started working in Absolute Coordinates on the 29” Eiffel Tower in the Engrave and Cut files. I’ve never taken advantage of the centering of the work icon in the upper tools (arrange long). I purposely got the 12”x12” Basswood for the tower to have extra strips of it for exactly the honeycomb bed pins because I wasn’t careful and my laser went over the hold-down pins… breaking them. This will take care of that and I’ll use a template and strips to make more pins. Those magnets are so strong that if they get close and connect to each other it’s a pain to separate them, but they work too. Anyway, thank you Rich for another great tutorial. Will now make good use of all the smaller scrap laying around.
Awesome Jeffrey! I cut my hold down pins from 1.5mm basswood or any other thin material for just that purpose, so they snap off if hit. It keep from ruining the job, so the laser can just keep doing its thing.
Really terrific! My first laser, an xTool D1 pro, is on a UPS truck out for delivery right now. You've given me a great head start with your videos. It's greatly appreciated.
I just toss a tape measure over my scraps, but so far most scraps get used running test cuts/engraves of different things (making sure I got the layers right to get the engrave I want), those still go in the burn pile but nothing bigger than a few mm ever ends up straight in the burn pile.
Love the. Idea, but it did bring up another question. You seem to have all your “material” in a library. Do you have a video explaining how to do that?
Awesome video. Sorry if this question is somewhere in the comments but I missed it. You mentioned a book of kraft paper. Where do you usually get yours? I'm trying to figure out the weight/thickness of the paper, etc. you are using so I can replicate this. I want the figure out the perfect kraft paper settings for the D1 Pro 10W so I don't end up with a bonfire as a template. hehehe
I'm new at using Lightburn and see when you hit start there is a dialogue box that comes up with --Laser on--Air on--focus set- work framed-- how do you do that, I have a problem remembering all those steps every time and then waste my material.
Click on the wrench and screwdriver icon, the device settings. In the bottom right corner you'll see Enable job checklist. Turn it on, and then click Edit and put whatever you want in there.
Nice video as always. I have an offline laser that I use without a near by computer so what I do is the same you did but without the card board. So the same circle you created for the coaster I make it do 4 to 5 passes at a slow speed about 600 to 800mm per MIN so I'll have plenty of time to perfectly align it before it starts the actual engraving. I have my power output on the lowest setting that my machine allows to show the laser as a guide which on my machine is a (.4). So it runs as 1 job the first layer does the aligning then it'll start the engraving job
Love your videos! I had an Idea: you could stick straight pins along one or two sides of the path burned on the cardboard and just push the material up to the pins, pull out the pins and burn. Easy peasy! 😉
I have been looking at buying a 20W diode laser and have watched about all the videos of all the different ones. I think you have me sold on the ATEZR P20 Plus. Amazon has it right now for $999 with the air assist and a 15x15 honeycomb bed! Best deal out of all the 20w lasers I have found so far. Is there a way we can get your library for cutting and engraving the different materials that you have already made and setup in lightburn? That would really be a great start. Thanks for all you info and videos, they are very helpful.
How do you set the heigth of the laserhead. Do you measure the thickness of the material you engrave and then add the neccesary heigth you normally need to engrave>
Another great video! Thanks Rich! A question .. at 4:10 of the video, after you click on START, I see a pop-up reminder, I wonder how did you create it. Thanks in advance
Edit --> Device Settings, tic off the icon at the bottom of the screen that says Enable job checklist, click Edit and add whatever reminders you want Gianni.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy DONE !! Works ! It is clearly written in the Lightburn documentation ..... this means we don't read the manuals enough. Thanks Rich ! When you come to Italy you have a paid coffee :-)
Love your videos sir. I've noticed that my X-Tool doesn't always go back to the exact location after it goes to the Home position. In other words, I can make a template like this and run a job but once it completes and returns Home, there's no guarantee that template is going to work perfectly for the next run. I always frame and check it very closely. Maybe it's just an X-Tool flaw.
How do you get the "confirm start - Laser on? - Air Assist on?, etc dialog box when you push the start button? I'd really like this reminder every time I run a project because I tend to forget about the focus, air assist, etc from time to time.
Hey brother how were you able to install your camera without making adjustments? The offset settings under camera control. I had to adjust all my settings x and y axis. Also height and width. I see all of yours are at 0
Total newbie here and I can’t thank you enough for all your instructional videos (to include this one). You gave me the confidence to finally buy a laser. One question about this technique. Instead of engraving the cardboard to help with alignment, could I cut the cardboard out to make more of a jig to drop the workpiece into? Is there a down side to this? Thanks again!

The engraving of the cats is naturally going to be right where you want it because the wood is in the same place as the initial setup that used the camera. I know it sounds like I am splitting hairs here, and I appreciate your videos. Just trying to get that alignment thing mastered without a camera.
No, no camera is necessary, that was the entire point of the video! cover the bed in cardboard or paper, run a square, rectangle or circle anywhere on the bed the size of your work piece so it makes an outline, and drop the real work piece into the template. I only used the camera so you could see the process.

So Rich...how do I get a continuous picture on my camera. I just get a screenshot and then when I update camera I see the next shot but it doesn't show continuous video. What do I need to do to get this?
On a Lightburn camera? Just pull down the drop down menu and select the camera. If you want a screenshot as an overlay only for the workspace click update overlay,
when marking the paper, I guess it is trial & error to get the correct power setting, as I have a X20 pro, and I have found that your power settings for other things seem to be a little higher than what I need, this thing really burns & cuts, most of the cutting I have done has been to much on the power, I have started tuning it down, and found that I can cut 3mm ply at 70 % , and 1 pass, I do need 80-90 to do 5mm solid wood like the coin chip you do, but thinking about cutting that back to about 60% and 2 passes.
Rich, I have a quick question. Background, I just received a OLM3 so I don't know if my process is the same as yours. I've assembled it but not installed LB yet. I thought you had to focus the laser to the project using the measuring pin on the laser. I didn't see you do that when you put the basswood on the bed for the cut. When you specifically selected the basswood, 2 or 3mm on the dropdown menu does that automatically set the focus?
Just curious, what sort of camera do you have setup and how do you have it rigged to your system? I have been thinking about getting one for my Diode Laser and the cabinet I am making for it.
I have an 8mp board camera that I printed a housing for. I hot glued it to the top of my Co2 cover. When the Co2 is on, the lights are on and it looks much better.
Hi Rich, what laser machine are you using in the video and where do you get these magnets? There are so many laser machines that it boggles the users' minds. A year ago, I bought the Sculpfun S6 Pro and am looking to upgrade to the Sculpfun S10 Pro 10W or Sculpfun S30 Pro 10W but, I am starting to get doubt, so could you enlighten me? I want to use the machine for a small business (semi-professional?). Thank you if you can help me.
hello, sir can you help with a svg file it saids its for 3mm can i use 5mm or do i need a hammer to put it together i miss your videos i have been try to move to north fort myers . im warming up my hammer lol thank you
sir hello how are you me im still breathing and im 4 days away from moveinf to north fort myers but any way can you help im trying to make somthing with my ortur laser but the question is the svg file is for a 3mm wood can i use 5 mm wood or is there a rocket sciences to it .
You set and save a position on the move tab at 0/0. That saved position is your "home". Before you use the D1 and power it on, manually move the module to the 0/0 position. Turn on the machine and it knows it's at 0/0. Now you can use absolute coordinates to run your jobs as long as you *never move the laser by hand!* Any time you need to rehome the laser, just go the Move tab and choose the 0/0 position you set and clickl Go. A laser module is not meant to be moved by hand and I wish xTool would stop demonstrating that way!
I would probably cut the cardbord and not engrave it and then cut my peaces of wood etc. above the cardbord. Have done it the other way and my cardbord catched fire. :) Also this way the air can flow through the honeycomb under the cardbord and you get no burnmarks. #winwin

In Lightburn, click Help --> Camera Selection Help. It'll help you choose by bed size and mounting height.
Goodness.... I swear my focus distance changes depending on the position of the laser. Does that mean it's time for mirror realignment?
Nope, time for bed leveling Derek.
As always rich great video.
I appreciate that!
can someone help me with why my laser wont move anymore?. it keeps saying homing cycle is not enabled. and cant seem to find a video with that problem when i type it in on here
You can enable the homing in the device settings.
Settings always have to be tweaked for each machine.
No Larry, I focused it off camera.
You rock
Thanks!
Look at the link in the description below. The machine I used in this video and the magnets are both in the description.
hello, sir can you help with a svg file it saids its for 3mm can i use 5mm or do i need a hammer to put it together i miss your videos i have been try to move to north fort myers . im warming up my hammer lol thank you
I answered your last question Paul.
sir hello how are you me im still breathing and im 4 days away from moveinf to north fort myers but any way can you help im trying to make somthing with my ortur laser but the question is the svg file is for a 3mm wood can i use 5 mm wood or is there a rocket sciences to it .
The thickness of the wood only matters if you're joining it, like making a box for example.
Absolute coordinance??
Coordinates
How does this work if you do not have limit switches on your unit? Such as in the Xtool D1
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanks Rich!
I would probably cut the cardbord and not engrave it and then cut my peaces of wood etc. above the cardbord. Have done it the other way and my cardbord catched fire. :) Also this way the air can flow through the honeycomb under the cardbord and you get no burnmarks. #winwin
That's the way I usually do it Michael. I have about 50 cardboard templates: th-cam.com/video/iM5t37xCv5g/w-d-xo.html
