Thank you!! I thought I had an alignment issue. Just got an xtool d1 20w pro and thought I'd start with something simple like a business card. I created the image, set the origin, hit the frame button and every thing lined up. I would hit start and everything would engrave approximately 15-20 mm to the left. The only way I could align the card properly was to do the low power 4 pass burn on the outside shape and position the card to match. I actually burned the outside shape into my spoil board just so I could line up a business card again. While following along with the device settings I noticed the pointer offset was enabled at -16mm. Disabled the pointer offset, problem solved. I knew it had to be something simple. Thanks again.

Rich - thank you for this and all your other videos. I'm very new and just set up my xTool D1 laser running Lightburn v 1.3.01. While only just setting up my system, I have watched many of your excellent videos. Thank you for all you do for the community. I also became a member of your forum. I used the mirror image that flipped the image on the workspace and the engraving printed correctly. Interestingly, the preview of the workspace showed the image in the correct orientation while the workspace had the flipped image. Still working to figure out how to fix.
The xTool has an origin of top left, the file was created on a laser with the origin of bottom left, so it has to be mirrored to work correctly on your laser.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanks Rich. Always knew it was the Indian and not the arrow. Really appreciate the feedback. Just finished watching your video for using Lightburn's material test card and located xTool D1's extensive material parameter list. It will be great help setting up the library.

i love you viedos you are very good teacher and explain things very well i have learned so much about light burn and how to actually how to use my laser from you .... i cant thank you enought for doing what you do ... hope you have a great day
Have you run into any practical limits on library capacity where lightburn starts to choke? Number of files, number of libraries etc, or is it better to load/unload them as needed?
No, when you import a graphic or photo into the library they take up only a fraction of the space of the original artwork. Having a multiple libraries doesn't affect Lightburn at all since it's not accessing them all. It only grants access to the art files on your drive, and only when a folder is selected. So you could have 50 art libraries in the list and LB only access the one your actually using..
Thanks for the great content, newby with lightburn I have small picture currently 37.mm x 36 mm just to test quality on a mirror but when I frame it runs larger but more of a rectangular frame. Any suggestions? And nothing else is on canvas. Thanks!!
I really appreciate your channel which I just found being new to laser cutting and engraving, I’ve imported the cut library settings for my Neje 3 Max that I downloaded from your website (many thanks for that), I see that your Ortur cut library has many more material settings, do you plan on adding the others from the Ortur? If not is there any rule of thumb to ‘scale’ the Ortur settings to use on the Neje? Thanks in advanced and keep up the great work
No I don't Brendon. Creating libraries on my own is very time consuming. However, you can use any library and customize it by clicking on Edit Cut and change the settings manually. Double the speed as a starting point.
Thanks for the reply, actually come to think of it I have seen a chart from Neje with a list of materials with corresponding speeds and passes for cutting and engraving. I’ll start there and do some trials to test the settings
Hey, hi, you do make good videos. I do have a question. I'm having problems with how to set my minimum power. it looks like it's off, and I can't add any number. Is there a sin away if there's a settings, or I could turn it on. Because in all of them I have them in minimum power of 20% and I would like to lower it to 10%. I tried to look for some videos but can't find any. If you could help me out, I would appreciate it. Thank you
Hi there I'm a long way from Louisiana !! I am about to enter the world of laser engraving. I am only a hobbyist, and have exhausted the creative possibilities using my scroll saw and other tools. I have used many drawing programs, Corel, Illustrator etc, so I am conversant with most of the terminology of these. What I am struggling to understand is does the laser engraver technology need grbl or lightburn programs. I see in these the instruction "line" and "burn" instructions, and the colour coding accorded to them. This I assume is the engine that drives the process of engraving, and is only in Grbl programs. I am worried that I may purchase my machine, and then be unable to understand the software. Having mastered photoshop, illustrator etc over the years, I hope this will not be the case, but it is new territory. Having read every review I can on TH-cam for every machine I can find, in my price range, I have decided upon Twotrees TS2 10W model. Finally, I had wondered how to get graphics that were used on these machines. I have many stock items myself. may I assume that I can print these to my laser provided that they are loaded by lightburn. I thank you for your excellent videos, and the advice and knowledge they contain. I am now going to your forum website to learn more. Best regards Brian (Heysham Lancashire)
If you mastered all those other programs, Lightburn will be 2nd nature in no time. The only thing you'll need to know is how to get settings for cutting and engraving. A good start would be to buy my 10W library for cut settings from engraveandcutfiles.com. Then watch some of my videos on Libraries.
i have a question about the use of lightburn...please help. i bought an Omtech co2 that includes lightburn...can that version of lightburn also be used with a zTool D1 diode laser or would i have to purchase another license of lightburn to use with the diode laser..?
I have a question. I bought some stand files and the slot for the connection is for 3 mm wood. My 3 mm wood is almost 5 mm. How can I increase the size of the slot without distorting the shape of the stand?.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy I did that but the stand was too big after that. I want to retain the actual size. Just increase the slot size. Is there any way to erase things on light burn?
Great video! I wrote down a lot of stuff to change on my setting and library creation. Membership to website and forum happens today. Wish and recommendation for another video. I have the AtomStack X7 Pro and an MAC computer in my office. My Laser Engraver is in the woodshed so I'll be using the SD Micro Card Chip to move a design from Lightburn to the Laser Handheld Controller. Would you do a step by step video on that process? Thanks, MarineCWO4 Retired!
Nice. Now I have a different question. I made an ART LIBRARY and was trying to but in a wreath into it but instead labeled it as wreath. How do I change the name. I tried everything I could think of except to make a new one. I am afraid that I will loose the grafics I have of santa, tree and the wreath.
*Easy Karl!* Double click the wreath to get it on your bed. Now, with the wreath on your work bed, go to the Art Library, click once on the wreath in there, and hit the Delete button on the bottom right with the trash can on it. Next, select the wreath on your work bed, and click, Import Graphic from Project. Give it a new name, and viola, you're good to go!
Thanks for the video. Question: between 6 minutes and 7 minutes in you explain Object Snap Distance and refer the number as in millimeters but LightBurn's window says, "Object Snap Distance (pixels)". Does LightBurn consider the pixel size to be 1mm?
Grid spacing and grid snap distance are mm. Object tolerance and snap distance are pixels. As with most of us, I don't always use the correct terminology. 🤪
What an informative video, thank you. I'm just beginning my Laser journey and your vids are a great help. One thing however I have copied your settings to follow along but cannot get my things on screen to 'snap' like i said my settings are exactly the same as yours...Any ideas? Thank you
Still feeling the burn? 😁 I hope you've healed now. Great video as usual I learned more about Lightburn. Have you updated your N40640 library yet? I've got mine now and all I can say is WOW what a difference even from the 30W. I assume you only use Lightburn with your CNC for cutting 2D files, I can't see how it could do 2.5D or 3D files? Thanks for the video!
*Yes I am!* 😎 But getting better every day, thank you! Yeah, Lightburn is purely 2D, and only supported by machines that have a laser (GRBL or Marlin) standard, like the 3018 for instance. I use it on my 3018 for simple engraving and cutting. Much easier to cut acrylic and thick wood on the CNC.
Thank you for your comprehensive videos. Is there an updated version of the settings you demonstrate in this video? I'm using LightBurn V1.3.01 trying to follow your configuration settings and find that the latest version contains new features. In addition, the snap to grid doesn't seem to work for me.
No updated version, since all of the features are in the updates of the software. They just add new features and I cover them in newer videos. The snap works fine, you just have to get the numbers right.
Every time I right click the devices button in light burn, the laser disconnects and will not respond to a second right click.( I hit this accidentally from time to time) Once disconnected I have to unplug the machine and plug it back up to get reconnected. Mac user. Any help as to why this is happening is much appreciated. Thanks.
Why do diode laser users use mm per minute? I have always run mm per second on my xtool d1. Is there a reson to switch it? Other than a desire to do math?
So I become a member went to Website to download your free graphics I mean your website joined I can’t figure out how to get these into my computer or open them up I know I know I’m a rookie thank you for your help
Thank you for taking the time to do this video (and all the others as well...they are super informative!!) I have a diode but my OMTech 60W will be coming sometime this week. I have a question...I'm trying to follow your tutorial but lightburn doesn't seem to want to cooperate and for some reason my whitespace scanning won't let me go past 1500 mm/sec and I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. Is there somewhere else I have to go to set another setting before it will allow me to go that high?
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thank you for the information...so I'm guessing that once I get my OMTech I'll be able to set it to 7000 for the CO2 laser then?
@@kymzim2863 No, 999 mm/sec is the highest setting for a C02, however, you won't ever be using that speed. Watch some of OMTech's videos and you'll get a good idea of speeds & power.
Question for you. Do you have a video on how you are connected to your laser? I have a Longer Ray 5 and I would be much more productive setting at my desktop than using my laptop connected to my laser via printer cable. Thanks for all of your videos.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanks. I understand that. I currently use a usb cable to connect the laptop. I do not want to move my desktop and 43in monitor down to my garage. So for now I have set up lightburn on my desktop and saving gcode to sdcard and carrying that to the laser. Im hoping to find a solution that cuts out the transferring to sd card step.
Hi M.E.T., I’m just starting out on my laser cutting journey and will have a similar setup to what you described, my plan will be to work from my desktop and use TeamViewer (free) to ‘remote’ into my laptop that’ll be visible through glass sliding doors, I’ll have Lightburn installed on the laptop but ‘drive’ it from close by. I’ll use Dropbox to keep artwork I download or create on my desktop synched between the two computers as my CAD and Illustration programs are installed on my desktop and I prefer to do most of my work using it.
Hi Rich, at the moment we are abroad for a few weeks, I want to download Lightburn while we are away, my question is if I practise Lightburn without connecting to a laser, save what I am doing/learning and when we get back to the U.K. will any work/files that I have saved in Lightburn be accessible the next time I sign onto the software.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanks Rich, I appreciate the time you take to answer my sometimes silly questions. I am just trying to learn mate, thanks again buddy, stay well and stay safe.
I appreciate all your content my question is because I am new to this can I use an iPad Pro to put light burn on it to be able to use for by ortur laser printer or do I have to go out and buy a PC and it’s so can I purchase an apple thank you for your feedback
No, there is no app at this time. I would highly recommend a Windows 10 or 11 system for Lightburn. It just works flawlessly, which can't be said for a Mac. I have several in my shop, most came from eBay as off-lease machines. You can get a nice Win 10 or 11 off-lease for under $100 with a Core i3 or i5 processor on eBay. I bought mostly Dell 7000 series refurbs Dan.
I’ve subscribed and clicked the bell. I’m wondering how everyone on TH-cam is able to connect their XTool laser engraver to Lightburn and my lightburn is unable to find my engraver. In order to run lightburn I need to have a laser enabled. My XTool Creative Space is able to connect with my laser via USB. Anything I create in XCS is around 3mm wide and about 100mm long. My maple leaf was a somewhat crooked line. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Create the xTool in Lightburn manually. If you're unable to connect, you may have the newer version of the D1 which does not use the CH340 driver, it uses the CH341SER driver. You can find more information here, along with the link for the CH341 driver: support.xtool.com/hc/en-us/articles/7934477424407-Target-device-not-found-when-connecting
I created an engraver manually just to get the software to run. I’m not sure if I downloaded the DPS version or something else. I just clicked on the link and prayed for the best. Do you have any ideas as to why I can’t get anything to print using XCS? I made three boxes going outward from each other. When they were printed, they were about 1/2” wide by 4” long. On my screen they appeared to be about 40mm square. I’ve used a Universal 60 watt laser engraving system running Corel Draw and had no problems with it. Thanks again for your help
The xTool uses the Gcode version of Lightburn. The DSP is for a Co2. They are both the same software and the only difference is the license price. Sorry, but I don't know what XCS is.
I have downloaded Lightburn but i do not have a laser yet as i am researching them. I assuming that why i can do much in the software other than design
You can "create a placeholder device" until you get your laser. Just search for that term in the Lightburn user manual. Have not done this myself, just stumbled upon this reading some other stuff.
Hi, I am very new to all of this but after viewing some of your videos, I decided to give you an example of what is happening with my new laser with the hope you can help me solve this issue. First of all, I have aligned the mirrors, adjusted the autofocus, and performed a ramp test. My machine will cut and engrave very nicely but here is my issue. When I send a file from Lightburn from my computer via USB to my laser with an updated Ruida panel the laser seems to often not follow the file. For example, if I cut a circle it will cut as it should without errors on the first attempt usually but when I try to run the same file again, the laser frequently will start cutting “inside” the circle and cut a straight line to the outside of the circle. At this point, the laser begins to cut the circle but then stops before the circle is completed or “closed”. This happens with most of my files and is costing me too much in time and material for the laser to be of practical use so I hope you or someone can help me figure out how to resolve this issue I am having with my new machine. Thanks in advance!
I don’t know what to do?…This has been an extremely frustrating experience thus far. My problem with Ethernet is that my wireless router is located upstairs in my home while my laser is in my shop which is a good distance from the wireless router. Should I just opt to buy another wireless router and use it only for the laser? The folks I purchased the laser from are telling me two different things(Reset to Factory Parameters and in another message they suggested to Reset to Default Parameters). Both of these options concern me because I can’t seem to get any advice that is working. As I said before, I’ve adjusted mirrors etc. and the laser will cut and etch very nicely but I can’t ruin 8-10 pieces of material to get one that actually worked as shown in the file. Thanks for your help and helpful videos…

*Glad it was helpful Nick!* Thanks so much for watching! 👍
Thanks! Another useful video
Glad it was helpful Evan! Thanks for the support!
Rich, can you review the sample supplies sent with the orturlm2, there are some items I don’t know what they are and how to engrave each item.
Thanks
I'm sure they're long gone by now Jim, sorry!
Good evening Rich. I ordered some of the LED Light Bases from your affiliate link. Is that acrylic safe to engrave or does it produce chlorine gas?
Nothing is really safe to engrave David, but it is cast acrylic, so it's the safest form of acrylic to use.

Those Lightburn cut libraries are available on my forum Brandon.
I can’t wait until I get my laser and load light burn.🎉
You can use the trial version now Chuck for 30 days.
Thanks. Lots of good info.
*Glad it was helpful!*
You are awesome man
Wow! Thank you so much! I appreciate the comment!
Thank you
Min power is a feature in Co2 machines. The only time you can set the min power otherwise is on an image or grayscale file.
Hi there
I'm a long way from Louisiana !!
Best regards
Brian (Heysham Lancashire)
If you mastered all those other programs, Lightburn will be 2nd nature in no time. The only thing you'll need to know is how to get settings for cutting and engraving. A good start would be to buy my 10W library for cut settings from engraveandcutfiles.com. Then watch some of my videos on Libraries.
i have a question about the use of lightburn...please help.
i bought an Omtech co2 that includes lightburn...can that version of lightburn also be used with a zTool D1 diode laser or would i have to purchase another license of lightburn to use with the diode laser..?
You get the DSP version with OMTech, so yes, diode or Co2.
My libraries just vanish off my computer all the time.
Not if your file organization is structured properly.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuyI have the same issue...guessing my file structure is also incorrect....
I have a question. I bought some stand files and the slot for the connection is for 3 mm wood. My 3 mm wood is almost 5 mm. How can I increase the size of the slot without distorting the shape of the stand?.
Select all and increase the size proportionately. Use the ruler tab to measure the size.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy I did that but the stand was too big after that. I want to retain the actual size. Just increase the slot size. Is there any way to erase things on light burn?
Thanks!
Thank you for the support JR!
Yes Sir, as soon as I get one! I just got the M40 so I'll see if it uses an SD card! Oorah!
Does lightburn automatically set up suggested settings when you import a photo
Nope
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy thanks for clarifying...i'm just learning and got lost a few times.
Is there a way to invert the x and y axis so I can engrave cups without having to rotate the image?
Turn the rotary.
Which of your video's did you show how to remove/smooth pixels from photos

Thanks 👌👍❤
Appreciate it! 👍
What an informative video, thank you. I'm just beginning my Laser journey and your vids are a great help. One thing however I have copied your settings to follow along but cannot get my things on screen to 'snap' like i said my settings are exactly the same as yours...Any ideas? Thank you
Check your settings, the Gear icon. Make sure snap to grid and snap to objects are both selected.
Yeah they sure are!
@@bigbadstig Then you need to adjust the snap distance and object snap distance.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy You Sir are an absolute star! That fixed it for me. Thank you
hey there! I was wondering how that if my computer crashes or stolen, how do we backup our files in lightburn?
th-cam.com/video/StyX0Nt4-kI/w-d-xo.html
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
Excellent!!
*Thank you!* 👍
Every time I right click the devices button in light burn, the laser disconnects and will not respond to a second right click.( I hit this accidentally from time to time) Once disconnected I have to unplug the machine and plug it back up to get reconnected. Mac user. Any help as to why this is happening is much appreciated. Thanks.
No idea, it doesn't happen to me. You can ask on the Lightburn forum David.
Why do diode laser users use mm per minute? I have always run mm per second on my xtool d1. Is there a reson to switch it? Other than a desire to do math?
It's the standard for diode lasers and Gcode. Co2 are mm/sec. If you look in the Devices Settings you'll see the recommendations.
So I become a member went to Website to download your free graphics I mean your website joined I can’t figure out how to get these into my computer or open them up I know I know I’m a rookie thank you for your help
You have to read the directions and watch the video on the download page David. You don't open the files.
Can you show us how to design Mandela art on lightburn?
I'll be doing some layered art soon Jeff.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, diode lasers are set to mm/min. C02 lasers are mm/sec.
Watch some of OMTech's videos and you'll get a good idea of speeds & power.
molto istruttivo ! grazie
Sei il benvenuto amico mio!
If "S-value max" is set to 255 instead of a 1,000 in device settings. Does that mean when I use the Diode laser I'm only getting 25% power?
Yes.
Question for you. Do you have a video on how you are connected to your laser? I have a Longer Ray 5 and I would be much more productive setting at my desktop than using my laptop connected to my laser via printer cable. Thanks for all of your videos.
It connects to the desktop the same way as the laptop.
You could run an amplified USB 2.0 cable. That's what I use in the shop.
The work and the files need to be saved to your hard drive, or you can use a cloud software like Google Drive Russell.

Shrink the window size Randy.
I bought mostly Dell 7000 series refurbs Dan.
when my laser is on and go to send it tell's me that my laser is busy or at a paused
Probably a USB issue. Try another port on your computer, or maybe unplug and re-plug the cable Richard.
XCS is short for XTool Creative Space. It’s their engraving software.
Ah, I don't use xTool's proprietary software.
I have downloaded Lightburn but i do not have a laser yet as i am researching them. I assuming that why i can do much in the software other than design
Nope, all you can do is design for now Robert.
You can "create a placeholder device" until you get your laser. Just search for that term in the Lightburn user manual. Have not done this myself, just stumbled upon this reading some other stuff.
Wait, you said that you use lightburn for your CNC. Can you explain that process please.
You create the 2D graphics (one path) and save the Gcode.
In the settings why do you have to choose millimeter if you using a diode laser why can it not be inches?
I use both. I sometimes like mm because a lot of my products are measured in mm and it's a bit easier.
Hi,
I am very new to all of this but after viewing some of your videos, I decided to give you an example of what is happening with my new laser with the hope you can help me solve this issue.
Watch my most recent video Buddy. You _should be_ connecting via Ethernet.
You plug the Ethernet cable from the laser to the computer, not the router.
