Thank you so much for this insight. For the past year, my 20W output laser had been working up to its potential. After getting a Lightburn update a few weeks ago, I had been struggling with VERY low power output; the laser was basically useless. I tried everything I could find on the various settings tabs. I did indeed see the "Max spindle speed (RPM), S-value min $30" in "Machine Settings" category, but I didn't think it had anything to do with laser power (spindle speed, huh?). Also, I didn't connect that to the "S-value max" setting in "Device Settings". Who knew? I actually thought my laser module was "burned out". After following your suggestions, I found that these settings were WAY out-of-whack so-to-speak; spindle speed was set to 1000 and S-value max was set to 225!!!! After making them equal (both 1000), now all is good. Again, thank you so much.

Hello! Thank you for sharing this wonderful tweak that unleashed so much power! Question is, would this have any long term effect, such as damage to the diodes or other components of the laser module? TIA.
So in short ….. no. If you put your setting at 100% power on all your projects then in theory it shortens the life. When these numbers match…. AND you set your power % to whatever that is… it’s a true number.
@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman so for example, if I know the firmware for the machine setting's max spindle speed is 6000, does this mean that I change the same settings in LB to 6000 and match that at device setting's at 6000?
So for diodes it’s the number of lenses that amplifies the laser. One laser is 5w 2 is 10w 4 is 20w etc. The settings I speak of is just making sure the % of available power is correct. When you set the s-value numbers to match…. The controlled % of 1-100 is actual. (Example: Speed and Power). Hope that helps some!!
I watched this video a while ago. After the new lightburn came out I forgot to check my settings and sure enough they did not match. If was not for this video I would still be scratching my head as to what could be wrong. Thanks for this.
Thanks, man. Gonna check this setting later when I get home after work. It is really frustrating when I need to set at 90%-100%/ 3 passes /240m for 3.2mm plywood, and yet the cut is not consistent. Sometimes it cuts sometimes it doesn't. It took almost 10-20 minutes to cut small pieces of projects.
good day. i tried to open my machine settings at it says 1000 instead of 10,000 like yours. do i need to change it to 10,000? my device setting is also 1000 as opened. Both are at 1000
@@bradgreen7947 if its never worked, then its probably the focus distance (Z-axis position) be sure in the Device Settings, you enable z axis, enable OMTech Polar, and enable Optimize Z moves. then a new "material" field will show up in the Cuts/Layers tab. once you set that it will control the focus height. The setting is valid for ALL layers and MUST be set properly If it just suddenly started to fail to cut, then it could be dirty (clean daily) or loose lens (happened to me)
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman on my CO2 Polar, I found under Device Settings->Vendor Settings->Laser Settings there's a "maximum power (%)" set to 75. But that's probably a good thing! It does explain why the test patterns all look the same above 75% though!!
If any of you would have read the setup procedure for Lightburn with a grbl device, this is clearly specified... These are actually min/max spindle speeds, and the Lightburn figures out what values the controller is expecting from these settings. Needless to say, both Lightburn and the controller need to know these values. With a solid state device that is digital, like these ssl (diode), they only run at 100%, you can't lower them. If you set it to 50%, the laser is on 100% power for 50% of the time. Running at 100% (or on) should not harm the device if it's designed well enough to take the heat away. Glass tube co2 are analog and, as analog devices, they can have their lives shortened by high current operation.
Well now I feel stupid, I got a 24W laser as my first machine and I thought it was a bit weird that even on 100% power and 300 mm/min speed it barely cut through 4mm hardwood plywood, while other people in videos easily cut through 15 mm hardwood or even more with their 20 watts :D Thank you so much for this :)
please help me, I did everything as you said in the video, but it still works weak, I have a sculpfun s30 33w laser, at 20 percent speed and 100 percent power it does not cut 4 mm plywood
I have checked and double checked my LightBurn software and that setting doesn't appear on either setting groups. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
So if both your setting match up you should be good. By adding a 0 to both… it won’t do anything “extra”. It doesn’t change the actual power of the laser. It only makes sure your machine is using its full potential which in your case is 5.5w. Hope that helped a little more and thanks for watching!!!
I’m using Sculpfun S30 Pro Max 20W laser, I tried before and after changing the setting, unfortunately the results were exactly the same! Thank you for the information though 👍🏼
mine (Omtech k40+) was set at 1000 in both device and machine settings... so that should be ok.... ? Right ? Or do I put it to 10 000... and potetially burn the pow sup...
1,000/1,000 is fine. If both are the same you’ll be running at true 100% power. 10,000/10,000 is the same too. It’s not telling to pump more power only a % of 100% power.
I cannot access Machine Settings since my Falcon 2 won't interface with my MacBook Pro. How do I address this issue or is it a non issue since I just move files on an SD card?
Great info. I have a 20w thats cutting the same as my 10w BUT I checked and both my values are the same, 1000. Should I change them to 10,000 like yours? also my min spindle speed is 50 and yours is 0? thanks for any help
me either. mine are both same at 1.000. should we change them to 10.000? does 10.000 is lightburn default for all kind/type machine? or the default values depends on the machine type?
I would default to 10,000. It’s not going to over clock your laser like a CPU so there is no worry about damaging your laser. Once you change these settings just set your power to 100% all the time. A lot of times even when cutting throught 3mm you only need 85-90% power.
It takes 1 passes to cut through 1/8" ply with my 20W. My $30 is set to 1 as well as my S-value. Is the key to make sure they match or is my output being impacted by the low settings?
Never heard of 1 and 1 but theoretically as long as the numbers match your good. They need to be the same to be using 100% of the potential power of your laser when set to 100% in the program. Hope that helps.
Just checked my settings and both machine and device settings are set for 1000 for the max s speed. I'm taking it that since both are the same I should be getting proper output with my laser. Would I be correct on this thinking? Nice video. Thanks.
I own a 100watts co2 laser, those settings are not on my lightburn settings. Why? So, im having problems right now i try cutting a 6mm plywood. Inwas able to cut it at Parameters set at speed 12/ power 55, however i was not able to cut it at speed 10/ power 80. Why is that?
Bonjour, je découvre ta chaine, et j'ai fait les réglages. MAIS, quand je veux faire le cadrage; le laser dessine celui-ci. Je n'ai pas trouvé pourquoi. Merci si tu as une réponse.
My biggest problem is cutting small intricate designs (right now snowflakes) without scorching the daylights out of them since I use 2 passes. Tried blue tape with one pass and didn't get thru the wood. Two passes and it's toast. Tried high speed/high power, up and down, mix and match. Checked device settings and yes, it was at 1000. Dropped another 0 on the end and will try again on a single pass with a higher speed.
So these numbers represent a percentage of power. You can’t over clock your laser. If it’s a 10w Diode… you can’t make it a 20w diode. If these numbers don’t match, you’re only going to using a certain percentage of your available power. That’s about it. Hope that helped!
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman hi there. Thanks. So I have a 5W LaserStorm I checked in the device settings and the S value is 255 is the good? I don’t think I’m going to mass with it? Anyway thanks again
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman Wrong, this is for every laser with GRBL-controller. Many owner of the old K40 CO² with m2Nano switch them to MKS DLC cause it's much cheaper then a DSP-controller like Ruida 6442. Also it's important to note, that older GRBL-controller do not support a value higher then 255. That's the reason, why some lasers have 255 and not the typical 1000. If you try to set 1000 on a controller only supporting 255, you will run into problems. Higher values are possible but bring no real benefit. Exception is when you not only use a laser. A spindle benefits in their respectiv Software.
It’s mainly a Lightburn thing. Happens a lot for CNC / Laser combos. If it’s a “Laser Only” machine it’s possible the Device and Machine settings can be off. I’d double check to make sure they match.
Ive got the 4240 cnc laser, im about to throw it out because i cant find any information or settings on it so going to try your advice, im trying to cut 3mm birch plywood so here hoping your advice works
Dear blogger, hello, I would like to ask about the dust collector produced in China, the motor is 220V, how can it be used in the United States, do I need to connect another line.
From what I’ve learned from others…. This setting is irrelevant to CO2 laser users. I believe you use the setting on the controller from the CO2 and not the actual software.
Working on a "100W" glass tube laser we don't run above 80%. Measured input power V*A and compared with optical power W, past 80% all the extra power just turns to heat, and was cutting tube life from 500 days to below 200 days. If you use glass a lot, beg borrow or rent a power meter imho.
Hello, I love your videos! I have a question. I just purchased a Vevor A7 10w laser machine and I don't seem to be getting the power I need. The max spindle speed it is showing is 1,000. Is that correct?
Hello there, need advice, which better, that is speed 150 1time cutting, or make it 800speed, 5 time repeat?? (100% power) i just think, make it more speed but repeat, to safe the dioda laser machine (not sure that is right or not LOL)
Nope! More power faster. Don’t be fooled by people saying 100% power is bad. They don’t know what they’re talking about. Lasers were meant to be used. Higher power and less passes. You’ll have less charring too! If you’re not sure …. Make a circle or box and on a section of the wood that’s waste…. Set to 8-9 passes and count how many it takes it to drop. This is how many passes you’ll need for the project and add 1 for good measure. All wood is different so hopefully this helps some!
I looked at my settings and they were already at 10k but my lasers 40w and it's not cutting nearly as strong as your 20w I've been playing around with it all day and can't figure it out 😤
on a atomstack a24, both my values picked up 1,000 (was manually added, it did not automatically find the laser). Since the a24 has 600mm/36000rpm speed, can this go higher? I feel like it's not unlocking its full potential of a 24w laser as i see in review videos for material tests
Great video. Air assist makes a big difference. What air assist are you using in this video? Model, pressure (psi, MPa or kPa) and airflow (l/min or gal/min)? Are you using the Fox Alien one (0.030 MPa & 30 l/min). Many thanks.
thansk a lot for the video, it helps a lot. may i ask a out of topic question here ? i have a DIY setup laser engraver ( MKS DLC32 controller + laserTreee 40W AA ) , till now i cant get a perfect circles when i draw them. i dont find any misalign when i draw a square/rectangle. ive done manu calibration settings, but it still the same. any thoughts ? thanks
Thanks so much! @roadcrayon1525 is 100% correct. If you hold shift…. Then drag your cursor…. It will stay a perfect circle. If you don’t it will be oblong. Worst case make sure you unlock the dimensions and hand type the exact same measurements you need in both Width and Height then Lock it again! Thanks for Watching!!!
Hello! You are perfect. I use my 24/48 watt Atomstack S40 Pro laser without a laptop. I'm using a flash card. Now I looked at the settings, I have a value of 1000 in both places. I did a sample with a value of 10,000 and found the effect to be much better. Is it a problem with the laser that only the value in Device Settings is changed? However, I use it without a laptop. Is this 10,000 value even a problem for laser life? I have never used it at more than 85% power. Thanks!
It’s absolutely not a problem with the life of the laser. Don’t be afraid to go to 100% power either. This is direct info from the manufacturer. I’m not sure how or when the myth of “never use 100% power” started but it’s just that…. A myth
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman actually this is not myth. Here is some articles about that. diode-laser-wiki.com/documentation/frequently-asked-questions/#:~:text=This%20is%20also%20a%20frequently%20asked%20question. MY SETTINGS WAS CORRECT FROM THE BEGINNING, BUT THAN...ONE DAY out of nowhere. my Falcon stopped cutting. I found your video and changed Machine settings to 10 000, because somehow it became 1000. I go back there and the value is 1000 again. Please, HELP🙏
It won’t. It only is a Percentage. So if one is set at 1000 and the other is 10000…. Then that means you’re only using 10% when your settings are at 100% power.

After making them equal (both 1000), now all is good. Again, thank you so much.
Fantastic!!! It’s such a weird setting that happens a lot to people! So glad it helped you out! Happy Burning!
Bom dia.
Grato
@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman so for example, if I know the firmware for the machine setting's max spindle speed is 6000, does this mean that I change the same settings in LB to 6000 and match that at device setting's at 6000?
hello
how would do we know what is my maximum power? is it the default value in machine settings?
So for diodes it’s the number of lenses that amplifies the laser. One laser is 5w 2 is 10w 4 is 20w etc. The settings I speak of is just making sure the % of available power is correct. When you set the s-value numbers to match…. The controlled % of 1-100 is actual. (Example: Speed and Power). Hope that helps some!!
I watched this video a while ago. After the new lightburn came out I forgot to check my settings and sure enough they did not match. If was not for this video I would still be scratching my head as to what could be wrong. Thanks for this.
Glad it was able to help. Thanks for coming back to reply!
Spot on tip fella - Kudos!
😇. Thanks AM68!!
Thanks for people like you
Thank you! Means a lot!
Simply THANKS
Honestly I’m glad it helped you out! THANK YOU!
good day. i tried to open my machine settings at it says 1000 instead of 10,000 like yours. do i need to change it to 10,000? my device setting is also 1000 as opened. Both are at 1000
did you try? have the same settings, just want to know :)
Same here, i have 5w diode laser
Great job. Thank you 😊
Your welcome!!! Thanks for watching!
I don’t have those settings in lightburn. Are they called different things on different machines? I have an OMTech polar.
Yeah they won’t show / work on a CO2.
I have 50w CO2 and doesn’t cut 1/8” ply. Does you know what I can do other than multiple passes?
@@bradgreen7947 if its never worked, then its probably the focus distance (Z-axis position)
be sure in the Device Settings, you enable z axis, enable OMTech Polar, and enable Optimize Z moves.
then a new "material" field will show up in the Cuts/Layers tab. once you set that it will control the focus height. The setting is valid for ALL layers and MUST be set properly
If it just suddenly started to fail to cut, then it could be dirty (clean daily) or loose lens (happened to me)
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman on my CO2 Polar, I found under Device Settings->Vendor Settings->Laser Settings there's a "maximum power (%)" set to 75. But that's probably a good thing!
Thanks for watching and commenting !
Don’t feel stupid! We’ve all been there…. Me too! Just glad it helped out!
I thought the exact same thing. I have a 24w as well and was having the same problem.
@@panellmann1461 and now how many pass to cut your hardwood 6mm?
please help me, I did everything as you said in the video, but it still works weak, I have a sculpfun s30 33w laser, at 20 percent speed and 100 percent power it does not cut 4 mm plywood
Not sure what’s wrong then. Your setting the correct focal length?
I have checked and double checked my LightBurn software and that setting doesn't appear on either setting groups. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Do you own a Diode or CO2 laser??
I have a 5.5watts can I apply this to my ortur and what would be the change right now both at 1000 thank you for your assistance
So if both your setting match up you should be good. By adding a 0 to both… it won’t do anything “extra”. It doesn’t change the actual power of the laser. It only makes sure your machine is using its full potential which in your case is 5.5w. Hope that helped a little more and thanks for watching!!!
I do not have these settings in my lightburn. Any Idea why? 60w omtech.
I’m not sure. That’s a CO2 laser so maybe that has something to do with settings. I’m not familiar yet with CO2.
Because your laser machine is off or not connected to your laptop! Turn it on bro! lol I had the same problem!!
Do these setting apply to CO2 lasers? I don’t see these settings, but the software has changed a lot in a year as well.
They do not apply. 👍
I’m using Sculpfun S30 Pro Max 20W laser, I tried before and after changing the setting, unfortunately the results were exactly the same! Thank you for the information though 👍🏼
That’s odd it didn’t work. Wish I was able to help more! Thanks for working!
is there any reason my machine settings window is blank? mine is all white with just tabs to click on the bottom.. sculpfun s9 with lightburn
thank you
Your welcome!!
mine (Omtech k40+) was set at 1000 in both device and machine settings... so that should be ok.... ? Right ? Or do I put it to 10 000... and potetially burn the pow sup...
1,000/1,000 is fine. If both are the same you’ll be running at true 100% power. 10,000/10,000 is the same too. It’s not telling to pump more power only a % of 100% power.
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman THANK YOU VERY MUCH !
I cannot access Machine Settings since my Falcon 2 won't interface with my MacBook Pro. How do I address this issue or is it a non issue since I just move files on an SD card?
You should be able to use a Mac just fine. Try downloading any driver files from their website. Hope you got it working!!
Great info. I have a 20w thats cutting the same as my 10w BUT I checked and both my values are the same, 1000. Should I change them to 10,000 like yours? also my min spindle speed is 50 and yours is 0? thanks for any help
I'd like to know this too. I also have a 20w and both settings are at 1000.
me either. mine are both same at 1.000. should we change them to 10.000? does 10.000 is lightburn default for all kind/type machine? or the default values depends on the machine type?
I would default to 10,000. It’s not going to over clock your laser like a CPU so there is no worry about damaging your laser. Once you change these settings just set your power to 100% all the time. A lot of times even when cutting throught 3mm you only need 85-90% power.
So mine were both on 1000, is that good or do they need to be 10000 ?
I recommend 10,000
It takes 1 passes to cut through 1/8" ply with my 20W. My $30 is set to 1 as well as my S-value. Is the key to make sure they match or is my output being impacted by the low settings?
Never heard of 1 and 1 but theoretically as long as the numbers match your good. They need to be the same to be using 100% of the potential power of your laser when set to 100% in the program. Hope that helps.
how to control power of the laser on grbl?
I recommend Lightburn!
Just checked my settings and both machine and device settings are set for 1000 for the max s speed. I'm taking it that since both are the same I should be getting proper output with my laser. Would I be correct on this thinking? Nice video. Thanks.
Yup! As long as they’re the same!!! You’re at 100%. 😬
CO2 is different. I don’t own a CO2 so I can’t unfortunately talk about the issues you’re having. Hope ya get it worked out!
Bonjour, je découvre ta chaine, et j'ai fait les réglages. MAIS, quand je veux faire le cadrage; le laser dessine celui-ci. Je n'ai pas trouvé pourquoi. Merci si tu as une réponse.
I just bought a omtech 80w. Does work the way for a Co2
It does not. CO2 is different. I have a video coming out soon for my first “small” co2 and might talk about this a little.
Yeah…. Sometimes those intricate cuts are hard! I make wood earrings a lot and those too sometimes get fried! Test cut files may help you out.
@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman relieved to hear someone with far more experience still has this problem 👌
Does this apply to fill engraving as well or just cutting?
Yes.
Both my settings were at 1000 on my 10W diode.
Thank you very much, very helpful👍
You’re very welcome!
Nice. So ware does one look for the right number on the laser ? To have the right settings ?
So these numbers represent a percentage of power. You can’t over clock your laser. If it’s a 10w Diode… you can’t make it a 20w diode. If these numbers don’t match, you’re only going to using a certain percentage of your available power. That’s about it. Hope that helped!
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman hi there. Thanks. So I have a 5W LaserStorm I checked in the device settings and the S value is 255 is the good? I don’t think I’m going to mass with it? Anyway thanks again
@@vincentlekei1969 as long as your $30 matches. If your $30=1000 then your only utilizing 25% at 100% Power
Just here to say that I love you! Thank you so king much
Awe…. We love you too! 😂🤣😂. Glad I was able to help!
Where is the MAX SPINDLE in Lightburn 1.7.01? I take it that maybe it is only if you are running a diode (g-code)?
Correct. This is for Diode only. Not CO2!Or Fiber setups.
Does this work for cO2 lasers also? In following along with your video I’m not finding the same settings. Thank you!
It doesn’t. CO2 lasers power solely off the controller and do not use Lightburns settings.
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsmanthank you for answering my question so quickly!
Does it matter what the original S value max is? (In machine settings) I have a 20w diode
Hi! my lightburn show $30 = 1000 and max value 1000, it´s ok? o I must change de value of $30 to 10000?, i have a laser of 10 watts.
As long as they match. 1000 each or 10000 each! If one is 1000 and the other is 10000 then at 100% power you’d only be using 10%.
Do you know if this applies to the Longer Ray5 lasers?
It’s mainly a Lightburn thing. Happens a lot for CNC / Laser combos. If it’s a “Laser Only” machine it’s possible the Device and Machine settings can be off. I’d double check to make sure they match.
Ive got the 4240 cnc laser, im about to throw it out because i cant find any information or settings on it so going to try your advice, im trying to cut 3mm birch plywood so here hoping your advice works
Dear blogger, hello, I would like to ask about the dust collector produced in China, the motor is 220V, how can it be used in the United States, do I need to connect another line.
If it’s 220 your definitely going to need to install a 220 outlet with plug to match. I would consult with an electrician before you make any moves.
IS this also possible for the CO2 laser. I don't find these settings in Lightburn 1.6.03.
This is not going to work for CO2 I’m almost positive. This will work on your Diode only.
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman thank you for your answer. It's a pity. greetings rigo
I don't have either of these settings in my Lightburn 1.6.01 version
What laser are you running?
Thanks for the quick reply! its a co2 80w Chinese laser 80w.
@@TheJohnny3d that’s why. These settings don’t apply to CO2 lasers. Your controller controls the power.
Oh did not know that, Ok thanks for your help.
@@TheJohnny3d your welcome! Thanks for watching!!!
I need to check my 80w C02 to see what the settings are. Thanks for the video!
I tried and my 5 W laser but it keeps going back to 1000 instead of 10,000 for the max spindle speed
Change the settings then restart Lightburn
Hello, I love your videos! I have a question. I just purchased a Vevor A7 10w laser machine and I don't seem to be getting the power I need. The max spindle speed it is showing is 1,000. Is that correct?
Thank you! Make sure your settings in Machine and Device settings Match! I keep mine at 10,000 / each.
My Lightburn Device Settings have no option to change the power.
🤔. Hmmmm….. what kind of laser do you have? Diode or CO2?
you're right, nothing labelled power settings. Its the "S value" you need to change, bottom right hand corner of the Device settings.
Hello there, need advice, which better, that is speed 150 1time cutting, or make it 800speed, 5 time repeat?? (100% power)
i just think, make it more speed but repeat, to safe the dioda laser machine (not sure that is right or not LOL)
All wood is different so hopefully this helps some!
is it the same with EZCAD2?
Honestly not sure. Never used it. Sorry I couldn’t help!
Is it also for fiber? Thank you
I’ve never used a Fiber laser so I can’t really speak to that. Sorry! 😞
I looked at my settings and they were already at 10k but my lasers 40w and it's not cutting nearly as strong as your 20w I've been playing around with it all day and can't figure it out 😤
I’ll bet your output power is 5.5 - 10w….. not 40w. That’s your input power.
on a atomstack a24, both my values picked up 1,000 (was manually added, it did not automatically find the laser). Since the a24 has 600mm/36000rpm speed, can this go higher?
I feel like it's not unlocking its full potential of a 24w laser as i see in review videos for material tests
My omtech doesn't have these settings.
CO2??? Doesn’t function the same as Diode or a CNC/Laser setup. You won’t have these if C02

A myth
