The 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid Is A Small SUV With Prius Like MPG's

- #Toyota may have been late to the party with a sub-compact SUV but the #ToyotaCorollaCross is a much more competitive offering versus the old CH-R from last decade. The #CorollaCrossHybrid brings class leading efficiency that is lacking from its main rivals, and while the #ToyotaCorollaCrossHybrid doesn't quite have the off-road capability of the #SubaruCrosstrek, the same powertrain from the #ToyotaPrius may tempt buyers who are looking for class leading fuel economy.

Happy Saturday everyone! Hope your weekend is off to a great start! The Subaru Crosstrek may be the top seller the space but the Corolla Cross Hybrid is still the only hybrid in the segment and its sales are increasing every year! We're also expecting Lexus to send over the revised 2025 UX 300h very soon, which shares a platform with this vehicle and also gets the new hybrid powertrain from the Prius that is also in this car.
Nice review and editing! Side note…. I wonder if the extra beep is cause the sunroof isn’t fully closed. My friend’s Toyota does that and we found out that the sunroof was slightly not fully closed.
Toyota finally gave us a TNGA-C vehicle with generous headroom and then forgot about our legs.
7:47 The spare tire part is wrong, sadly: Toyota stuck the high-voltage cable to the rear motor under the foam divider, so you couldn't put a spare there. (But that's better than on the RAV4, where that cable is on the outside and gets corroded in winter, and the hybrid warranty ignored!)
Definitely a great Toyota hybrid vehicle, but I can’t stand all the dealers marking it up at ridiculous rates.
That is exactly one of the main reasons that I no longer drive a Toyota vehicle because of the outlandish markups for almost every single Toyota on their lot. There are a lot of other great manufacturers out there that make fantastic quality vehicles. I am so tired of corporate greed, and dealer greed.
Please do better research... not all Toyota dealers marking it up.
@@netgarnet4337 yeah none of the Toyota dealers near me do markups anymore. In fact they're going for under MSRP now depending on the model.
Wow I had no idea! Markup by how much?
Fr, this thing ain’t worth $35k let alone $40k. And anyone who buys them that price is a problem and needs their mentality studied
42 MPG and under 7 seconds, 0-60, is a pretty rare combination, for any vehicle, at any price. Starting at $33k for an SE model, with standard AWD, with more power and MPG than anything else, I think its a steal.
I'd go for the new 25 Camry hybrid honestly
I tested this car when car shopping for my sister. All Toyota dealerships in the state were back ordered for 1+ years and had crazy $5k markups when they did deliver. We ended up settling with the new 2024 Kona SEL for $8k less and vastly superior interior tech.
You made the right decision. I almost can‘t believe how disappointing that interior is.
Smart, cash is cash, why spend more for basically nothing
36k for corolla....Man, diz prices are insane
R u living in the 90s?
I say it's worth it, given that it gets over 40 MPG, gets you to 60 in under 7 seconds.
Find me another vehicle that can do that, carry 5 people and their stuff, with AWD
And the average new car costs $10k more than this.
@@InvestBetter. The Chinese version only sales for 19K, although only FWD available.
Just negotiated a CR-V sport L for $36.5k and it BLOWS this taryoda away.
That’s not much off MSRP lol
Can't wait for dealers to mark these up 10k like the RAV4 Hybrid.
I got mine at MSRP and couldn’t be happier! All the dealers in my area were charging insane markups, so I ended up having to buy it in the state over from a friend of a friend who worked at Toyota.
I always feel like all these car reviewers hate on the only cars an honest mechanic recommends. They rave about cars that will break down within 100k miles. Career longevity? 😂
I'll stick with my Toyota.
I've had the 22 L model since June 2022. 0 problems
0-60 in the 6 second range is impressive for any corolla, let alone a Corolla SUV, especially since the regular version is very slow. As long as you realize you’re getting an economy car.
This exact car in Europe is extremely nice. Better display, much better looking inside and out, panoramic sunroof, 19 inch rims, etc. etc. we always get shafted here stateside…🤷🏻♂️
I better get one now before it's $50k 😅
🤣
Prices are crazy!!!!!!
If you had lifted that foam piece all the way out, you would have seen that you cannot fit any spare tire there because Toyota blocked the space with hybrid wiring components.
Crazy that, as priced, is mid 30K in price. Also crazy that this vehicle is considered "a more affordable vehicle".
If I were to get a new car, today, I'd get the Prius. Still not perfect, but preferable to this. And at the same price, a much larger center screen.
BTW, Honda REALLY needs to set it up and make an HR-V Hybrid. They'd gain many customers then.
There's nothing inherently wrong with the Corolla Cross, it just feels incredibly generic. Normal buyers will like the Toyota reliability, good usability and great MPG, but there's nothing else to write home about. Sadly at $36k, that isn't good enough.
Wrong. Everything is wrong with the corolla 😂
It’s not attractive, it’s not luxurious inside, the materials and build quality are subpar to the point where Tesla looks better, tech is dated, back seats are useless, it’s not that great to drive, it’s not practical and it’s way overpriced
The corolla cross as is the case with almost any new Toyota is dead on arrival
An extra set of beeps is the rear seat reminder on newer Toyota vehicles, but I don’t think that’s what you experienced - it sounded more of a long beep. If you open a rear door (i.e. putting a child, object in the back seats), it will alert you when you attempt to lock the doors, as you did. I believe it unlocks the doors (even though I don’t think it did on your tester) and plays the beeps because you likely forgot something or someone in the back. Of course you can turn it off; it’s a feature with TSS 3.0 vehicles. Great video as always!
Good review as always. I agree with you on the interior. It needs to be brightened up a bit. Definitely on the drab side.
I would consider this if it wasn't so noisy inside. I miss when Toyota were quiet compared to their competition.
You’ll never get the Toyota quality ever again
for this price, i would go with a lower trim venza. much nicer in every way!
@@pukas7419 but the venza is discontinued and still cramped 😂
My brother in laws new 2024 camry (base model) is really quiet and smooth. Definitely smoother than my tesla Y and 2020 prius prime. Its just all these small toyota cars have terrible sound.
@@Nightwing184 The Rav4 is terrible on road noise though.. probably just cuz it's an ancient car.
I saw a xle rav 4 for 33k hybrid so I don’t think paying 35k for that is worth it
36k price is insane! Add around 6k and you can get a Lexus. Fully loaded Camry is 38k. Hello?
You can get a gas rav4 too
Is the Lexus a hybrid?
@@johnwetzel1048 does it matter when you spend over 40k and get an enormously larger better car?
Sofyan, Toyota makes several models on the TNGA-C platform. When we consider the Corolla sedan, Prius and Corolla Cross CUV, it may come as quite a surprise that the Cross has the shortest wheelbase of the 3. No wonder back seat legroom is so inadequate. 🤨
Looks great for my small family or daily commuter for my wife but all the Toyota in Alberta onlt have the gas version and all their other hybrid vehicles are 6 months wait if you're lucky. I was in an accident and needed a vehicle so went with the Honda HRV Sport. Great solid vehicle but obviously not a hybrid and it does not have much power at all. Gas mileage is not great either on the Civic platform but it handles like a dream, the AWD is wonderful AND I was able to actually GET ONE lol.
Good review, Subbed and watching your other vids now.
Your review of the back space is spot on. A lot of prospective buyers think this is an inexpensive alternative to the RAV4. It isn't. If you have a growing family and need second row space, this car won't work. As an aside, you will find most of the hybrids already pre-sold. The percentage sold, as you reported, is not because of demand but because of the supply constrictions at the new Mazda-Toyota plant in Alabama. Apparently, there is a shortage of skilled workers in that state. If Toyota was able to produce (or import) more of these cars, the numbers would be higher
somehow the entire world can get on with small cars except for americans who need 7000 lb trucks for personal transport
Nice job Sofyan & I would buy this hybrid SUV.
8:50 I couldn’t tell if it was one or 4 extra beeps, but my 2023 Prius beeps 4 times after locking as a reminder that I opened the rear doors and to check the rear seats before I leave - like if I left a child or other important item in the car
Well it might have good fuel economy and hybrid but the front end looks ugly. From the quarter panel to the rear looks better. Toyota need to work on their design for smaller vehicles
They need a plugin hybrid version of this
Great car for seniors; power hatch and shallow cargo space saves backs, comfortable adjustable driver's seat with good ground clearance to save hips/knees, and lots of safety features that dampen down slower reaction times.
This looks a lot better than the base car
My wife has a 2023 XLE, and the screen size its 12". Did the change for 2024?
Not a fan of the big hunk of black plastic on the front. It's like the designers just got tired and gave up trying. I prefer the non-hybrid front end and wish this one had that too, as the hybrid does in other countries.
I really like the overall exterior of the Corolla Cross. I always notice them when I see one on the road. My concern is that the interior is not only bland, it looks too basic & cheap which is sad. For my purposes in the city, I’m sure it’s all I need but it’s hard to get excited about buying one if I feel like I’m “settling” for this interior just for a reliable Toyota (& yes, a hybrid).
It’s hard to get excited over a toyota 😂
I bought the new 2022 platinium trim with two tone color (white & black)and have been enjoying the pleasent ride, comfort, tech & saftey features . I also enjoy the acceleration of this Suv which is more than sufficient for me. It is indeed a pleasen reliable vehicle specially in Los Angeles area with having panoramic sunroof available. The only suggestion i have is to see an increase in horsepower & torque. Looking forward to 2025 model.!
A better looking 2025 model has been launched in Asia.
Hopefully, it should arrive in North America soon
Sofyan really doesn’t like this vehicle lol
Great little car!!
Please share your review on Lexus UX 300.. eagerly waiting for the new updated version.. thanks in advance!!
I know
Put an S before the word UX and you’ll see what’s wrong with it. 😂
The only Corolla I'm paying over $35k for is the GR Corolla.
They shouldn't have used the word Corolla, totally different
I wish Toyota put some under body panel to cover up the brakeline /fuel line.
That is not a drab dash. Is such a pretty product if you have your eyes closed completely and you’re blindfolded and you tape them shut.
Brake torqueing, luxury amenities, sport handling… for a car that will be filled with entry level parents, car seats, and Cheerios, none of that matters. Cheap (for a 2024 hybrid SUV), reliability, MPG is what this target audience will care about. The sales prove Toyota got the formula right for their target buyers. (Had to edit. The spelling police got me)
What is "break" torquing?
@@ivanlowjones How are you going to call out my typo with a typo? What is "torquing?"
@@ralph833
There's no "e" in torquing. You used "break" incorrectly. I believe "brake torquing" is what you should have typed.
Toyota really isn’t aiming for the everyday working man anymore the prices on their new vehicles are crazy
Nothing in this class feels quality 😅, well except for the Cx-30 and HRV!
Seltos Kona are pretty good quality
Toyota is the worst though
The Niro hybrid is a competitor to this
Yeah...niro has better reliability and best AWD system
AWD is not available on that car, in any trim level.
Extra beeps are rear seat/cargo reminder
Why buy this when you have the rav4
I have a 2.0L non hybrid. I use extreme driving style to extract the best mileage. Gentle acceleration, cruising below 100km, hyper milling etc. So far after 15000KM of driving, my overall fuel economy is 5.0L/100KM which is 47 MPG.
What's your ground clearance? Do you have AWD? What's your cargo volume?
@@MrEnky007 FWD, totally stock car.
Great hatchback. (I know. We don't have 'hatchbacks' in USA.)
The NA market is totally monopolized by those a few big manufactures. Look at this. Everything is cheap except for the price. If you are enough for the gas price and don't want to play with the EV toys, Toyota is the only thing to get in 2024. Customers just don't have a choice.
Thanks for the review. The small entertainment screen is deal breaker for me! Bummer!
I like the concept, but I suspect most who buy these have second thoughts about the size and cargo space. Not a lot of space up front for "stuff" and the rear seats are tight. For that price, just get a Rav. More space and quieter.
When is this due for a redesign?
honestly why do you need a bigger screen I find the screen being huge very gimmicky , when that screen size will matter when we get self driving cars that we will be watching tv shows on it.
Because if everyone else offers big screens and this one doesn’t then it’s not good. It’s just a fact
@@naveenthemachine not a fact lol it depends what people value , I think focusing on the screen probably a distraction. I use to care about a screen when I got my car and now I could care less as long as it’s a decent size like 8 inches it serves its purpose. Maybe if you have poor vision a bigger screen helps but to the average person this should not matter.
@@naveenthemachineNot necessarily true actually. It’s like saying, a brand new 11th generation Honda Civic has a small screen and smaller than competition. Well, does that make Honda Civic horrible car just by what you said?
@@joecrash1232 but the civic has a 9in screen which is bigger than average in that class and the design materials and the way it drives are what make it the best
@@naveenthemachine I’m just saying as an example. The question I want to asked, based on your statement earlier, would it be a bad car if it would to have a screen smaller than 7 or 9 inches?
Have you heard of any plans to build a Corolla Cross Prime?
It is nice for south Philly parking for it size. Why the black 🖤 roof I prefer white 🐻❄️ roof because it a little cooler in summer 🌞 I think
Not a bad review …. 😊
$40,000, just went to Toyota and built one ,3K more and you can just go get a Lexus NX well-equipped.
The interior is atrocious. Looks like a 2017 car.
Gotta love the haters comment. It makes Yodas sales sky rocket 😆🤣
You now have to keep your Toyota 20 years to justify the price😅
Hopefully Toyota increases legroom in the back seat in next gen. Current leg room is laughably bad.
Buy a RAV4 if you need more space in the back seat. It is that simple.
They could have designed it better
Agreed.
Which one is better, the Corolla Cross or the Crown Signia?
Comparable to Mazda cx-30 at 26k.
Considering the 10k less and interest savings it will be equivalent to having 40mpg..
How fast is 60 in kilometres?
Go ahead and pay the the additional 5-10k rather than getting an HRV or Crosstrek
Love this thing. But I’d have to make special drives just to try and empty the tank more than every four months.
That's the ultimate "first world problem", gotta burn the gas in my hybrid to keep it from going stale.
Lots of cx5 influence without the fun
The looks are ok for me. I actually prefer it over RAV4 and awesome power train. Fast for what it is.
Also when Toyota made the Corolla Cross I was disappointed they didn't just electrify the CHR and add AWD. I think the CHR is much better looking.
I'm a person that thinks all Mazdas look better than the Toyotas.
So don't judge me on the CHR
Mazdas do look generally better than Toyotas. So you are clearly sentient. Now let's talk about calling the CHR good looking. 🙈
It's got great gas mileage and good features but it does look and feel cheap for sure. Great car for kids or a small family if you don't want all the bells and whistles. It just feels cheap and sounds loud but it's reliable.
Is the 2024 different from the 2023 CC Hybrid? My wife Bought a 2023 Leftover in February and I have to say, I hate the thing.
When accelerating a good clip the engine is very utilitarian, reminds me of a 70s Pinto in noise and feel. It has no Insulation under the hood. The Seats are not very comfortable and I'm not sure who designed the cockpit cause the cupholders are down right against the console/armrest so that if you have a large fountain drink the straws hit you in the wrist. The infotainment system puts out sound quality akin to 1980s radio shack speakers.. not sure what is up with that. We have places under the hood that are void of paint, showing only light grey primer. Performance is good, fuel economy is good, but the 2017 Escape we traded for this car was much more comfortable to drive on a regular basis. We also have a 2018 Equinox that just feels so much better to drive from an ergonomics standpoint. the Stereo is so much better, the infotainment interaction much smoother and the seats have more adjustability. My wife is a Hospice nurse and needs something reliable because sometimes she is on call and responding to peoples house in rural areas at 3am, in that respect I have no doubts this will be reliable and thats why we bought it, Im sure it will run for a long time, however when shes not driving it for work it just sits and we take a 6 year old vehicle with 87K miles on it because its more comfortable and has better placed cupholder and the engine doesnt sound like its ready to pass through the firewall and land in your lap under hard acceleration.
I do like the exterior design. Interior is typical Toyota.
It looks ok, could be better but ok for this year.
It beeps 3x because of the rear seat reminder.
What does that mean?
How does this compare to Honda CRV Hybrid?
Costs more to get the same features, much more back seat room, better and quieter ride, worse MPG, no free regular services for 2 years bigger to park in city spaces.
Holding out for a Camry Cross 🤞
I think that’s the RAV4
That’s basically what the RAV4 or Highlander are
If you brake torque it, you are killing the CVT.
It likely isn't doing the rest of the drivetrain any favors either. Such is the life of a TH-cam car tester and factory loaner. Many of these videos should have a DON'T DO THIS A HOME warning.
The Toyota hybrids do not have CVTs, they have a nearly indestructible setup of two electric motor-generators and a planetary gearset.
This is a hybrid eCVT not a traditional belt pulley CVT you’d find in a Subaru.
Why just regular compact estates aren't more popular. Are the roads so bad you need more road clearance? If this just an image thing? Does your wife told you to get a SUV, even if it's just a cross-over?
With a compact estate (Golf, Corolla, Mazda 3, Civic, if they made them) you get the best compromise. Boot capacity, low loading height, good room at the back, good aero, good handling, with still a reasonable footprint), and looks good too.
Must be an image thing, I must be a hopeless has-been, because I can't find anything wrong with mine.
18:25 false. There is an electric motor (two, in fact) in the front, and it delivers quite a bit of torque.
I’m sick of crossovers, can we get the Fit/Jazz and Yaris back with their HEV drivetrains please.
Is this really that much less expensive than a hybrid RAV4 XLE?
Unfortunately not- especially compared to the LE trim...
SE to SE trim- there is a big difference-
But is the buyer of this type of vehicle wanting to pay for sporty trim?
Not me anyway-
Would much rather this vehicle in an LE trim, then it would be much less MSRP than the RAV4 and worth the compromise in terms of interior space
Maybe also look at Mazda cx-30 if you don't need hybrid
I’m confused why our Toyota cross by hybrid is 1.8 L engine you guys have the 2.0
I think 2024 nissan rogue is much better car
The styling is boring but I don’t think people expect that in this type of vehicle or at this price. However, as for price w/o markup its a deal. With it I think it becomes too expensive
Actually Kia Seltos offers ventilated seats
You cannot fit a spare, there is an electrical cable that gets in the way.
Put a donut in the back seat or in the cargo area. And away you go!
Have the SE trim- which is the "base" trim in Canada.
Was not charged any markups.
Wonderful practical vehicle with incredible fuel economy.
I do wish I could have gotten the hybrid drivetrain in an LE trim-
Trim to trim it is cheaper than the RAV4, but an LE RAV4 hybrid is not that much more expensive...
But with the way prices are moving -
The upcoming redesigned RAV4 hybrid will probably only be offered in S-ish trims and be a LOT more $$$$ than the Corolla Cross...
Love this car-
Exciting? No
But it is everything I need and more, and I can afford it!
First car I have ever owned with heated steering wheel and seats- wow!
I was disappointed with size
,value
, quality
buy hyundai.. best quality, space and reliability. you wont be disappointed.
nice vehicle from Toyota, but the dealer mark-ups are such a show stopper. 😢
Didn't you just do a video on one 9 months ago
You really need to do a pov drive in your reviews you are only doing a side view and that makes it hard to see how the car really drives

Should've called it the Rav 2
Dealers are marking them up over 19% above M.S.R.P....ridiculous. I would wait until production catches up to demand. Fix your old car and wait it out. Any hybrid vehicle is going to cost you bigly because they are in high demand and I don't mean EVs. And forget about a PHEV, those are rare breeds and are marked up and non-negotiable as well.
Rav4 has more features and better overall
This car is ok but sadly, Toyata should have chossen to bring in America a much more interesting vehicle: the Corolla Touring Sport that they sell in Europe :-(
I've tested this car, specifically the 1.8 hybrid 189ps ecvt and it has a major flaw. Very restricted top speed probably because of bad aerodynamics due to the design. With 106 mph top speed it's unbelievable hard to keep up with the traffic on the highway (speed limit 80mph) for a modern car. The noise of the engine and the resistance of the air is unbearable after half an hour. Finally any technology for lower consumption is useless cause the design is so bad for daily use and not for a showroom that you end up flooring constantly the gas pedal to accelerate or maintain higher speeds.
This must be close to 50k in canada because the corolla hybrid is 42k 😂. It would take 6 to 10 years to recover the gas savings vs a regular engine 😂.
Meanwhile, you can get a Model Y RWD (260 mi range) for $35,500 (after point of sale federal tax credit). It's bigger, quicker (0-60 mph), better features, and more efficient. No oil changes etc. Much better option for those that have charging at home or work available.
....and way more reliable then toyota
@@netgarnet4337 Well, I wouldn't go that far, lol. Toyota's reliability is top notch. But EVs require less maintenance.
