  • This is a Motormouth couple car video of the top-5 subcompact SUVs for 2024.
    The 2024 Honda HR-V
The HR-V has one powertrain option, it’s a 2L 4-cylinder matched to a CVT with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available.
    The 2024 Kia Seltos
The Seltos has two powertrain options, the base engine is 2L 4-cylinder engine with an intelligent variable transmission, 147 horsepower 132 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. There is also a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 195 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. This is an AWD model.
    The 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross
The Corolla Cross has two powertrain options, a 2L 4-cylinder engine matched with a CVT, 169 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. A Hybrid with a 2L 4-cylinder matched to an eCVT, a combined 194 horsepower, standard AWD.
    The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek
The base engine is a 2L 4-cylinder matched to a CVT, 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque.
The second option is a more powerful 2.5L 4-cylinder, 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD.
    The 2024 Chevrolet Trax
Trax has one powertrain option, a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission with 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. FWD only.
    2024 Mazda CX-30
The base engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, 191 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. There is the more powerful 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder with 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. You get a bit of a bump in power if you use premium, 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque
    2024 Hyundai Kona
Three powertrain options, a non-turbo and turbo gas model as well as a pure EV. The Kona is all new with updated technology, a nicer interior design, it’s bigger than the outgoing model but it lacks features compared to some of its competitors like the Seltos. We also found this new model not as fun to drive as the outgoing Kona with the dual clutch transmission. Hyundai went with an 8-speed automatic for the new model. One of the biggest complaints of the outgoing model was the lack of space, so Hyundai definitely changed that with the new model. Previous model got a great reliability score of 83/100 from JD Power, we’ll see how this new one does.
    2024 Kia Niro
The Niro has three electrified powertrain options, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and a BEV. It’s priced well, it’s spacious, comfortable and gets great fuel economy. Unfortunately, there is no AWD option and the hybrid is under powered. The Niro doesn’t get the best reliability score from JD Power, a 76/100.
    2024 Volkswagen Taos
The Taos has a standard turbocharged engine with 158 horsepower. FWD models have an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD models a 7-speed dual clutch transmission which makes it quite a unique vehicle. It’s spacious, comfortable and has plenty of updated technology.

I want an engaging sub compact SUV to drive. My 2021 Honda HR-V EX FWD with paddles I love in sport mode.
My HR-V is a little too big for what I need. I'll compromise the back seat room which I never use and cargo in back for fun factor.
Also great MPG is crucial. Thanks Andrea! First time I've watched your channel. Best!!!

I agree totally we bought a CX 30 sport, base version for 25,000, 2 years ago and we just love the car, there’s only two of us, but we travel all the time there’s plenty of room for what we need, occasionally we have a third passenger or fourth but that’s very seldom and we really just push the seats up a little bit in the front and they’re in just fine for the 3 to 4 mile trip we make with them, it’s no big deal, we at least, for ourselves, are very glad we purchased the CX 30 , it’s fun and great to drive in ,Boy does it move. It’s also appointed inside like a luxury car. Love Mazda!

We absolutely love our 2024 Chevrolet Trax. Fits our family of 4 (two tall teens, two adults) and is the perfect blend of features for an incredible price. We had a strict budget, were looking to buy cash and not add a monthly payment, but didn't want to completely sacrifice on interior features or style. We test drove a bunch of different crossover vehicles across many makes, in the end Trax checked all the boxes. We were out the door at $25.7K (Washington State, USA)
If you're someone who is in the market and feeling, for whatever reason, priced out by the bigger names in the space when it comes to new, before you pivot toward used, I highly suggest you test drive the new Trax; you could end up with a brand new car that is a legitimate challenger to the big players in the subcompact crossover arena!

same scenario. strict budget, paying cash. we went with the crosstrek. premium model with the smaller engine; 2.0 motor comes with a 17" wheel while the 2.5 comes with an 18 and i wanted a cheaper tire replacement cost in the future. out the door at $25,561. id love to hear how the 4 months since u posted this have fared. i liked the trax, but we wanted awd if possible

    • @blacklagooner6452
      @blacklagooner6452 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@ROBinJVILLE 4 months in and we absolutely love it. Our two older, adult-sized teens fit perfectly in the back with room to spare. We're mostly city mice, so we haven't missed the AWD, and the engine has plenty of pep; never have been left wanting there. Handles like a dream.
The only complaint has been some intermittent glitchy-ness with the infotainment system, which we were aware of going in. Nothing that ever lasts, and is usually resolved with a power cycle or the next time we get in to drive. 95% of the time it works as expected, and some issues that were happening early (static or poor quality sound via wireless CarPlay) haven't happened again in 2+ months.
Gas mileage has been as advertised.
We're taking the advice found elsewhere and sticking to a strict 5K oil change cadence, but our dealership gives us three free oil changes a year for life, so that's no problem at all.
TL;DR - four months in we love our 2024 (base model) Trax more than the first day we drove it off the lot!

I feel the CX-30 is the most driver focused subcompact suv in the segment. I was on the fence about getting a 2024 seltos and the 2024 CX-30. But once I drove the Mazda I completely fell in love with the Interior, engine and exterior. Its just me for now and I don’t prioritize the space. And I am a complete driving enthusiast. Living in Canada, AWD is kind of a must and the added ground clearance is a big bonus. The car is an SUV but it drives like a hot hatch. Because of Andrea I got the CX 30, if I'm going to pay $35k for a nice solid vehicle I have to make sure I do a lot of research and this channel was a very informative one. I got the 2024 cx 30 turbo premium, no regrets. Im single and no kids so if I ever do have a family one day I'm getting the cx 5 or cx 50.
Also stay away from Kia and Hyundai, even if they are new vehicles their engines deteriorate over time. Not to mention the risk of someone breaking in because of the kia boys. Replacing the windows can get costly over time.

2:15 My issue isn't even peak power, its about NVH. When you have an underpowered naturally aspirated engine, you can hear and feel it working REALLY hard. The Trax has an underpowered engine too, at least from a horsepower standpoint, but the fact that its turbocharged muffles the exhaust a bit extra, and the midrange torque means it doesn't have to rev as high and so remains quieter. Same with say a BMW i3 electric, yeah, it doesn't have much power for its weight but the fact that its silent means you can happily floor it all over the place and it doesn't feel like its working hard.

With that being said, just make sure you keep up with the maintenance. While working at the service side so many people would not change their oil over a year just cause they wouldn’t reach the mileage. Others would wait until 10k. That boxer engine and the cvt transmission just loves to leak oil once it starts reaching those 80k and above miles.
Again, I love Subaru as a brand in itself and if I had money to spare I’d just go for a Subaru and not care but I just feel
Like Subaru needs to do way better

@@IAmJeka thanks for that information, I’m fanatical about servicing my vehicles, never go the recommended service intervals, I do mine way sooner, even other fluids in my car get changed sooner. Transmission should be done at or before 60,000 kms and everytime there after. Differentials I do at the same time but after breakin I always do both differentials at the first 10,000 km mark. Fluids are the lifeblood of any car and cheap insurance to do them. I must admit though, I never keep a vehicle beyound 100,000 kms. Guess I’m helping out the second owner 😊

I have to agree with Andrea on the CX 30, we love ours, had it two years now, yes, it’s smaller, not that small, , but as mentioned, if you don’t have a need or kids, it’s a wonderful vehicle to jet around in, and it does move fast, my brothers cross tek is very nice with great all wheel drive also, but it’s just so slow, compared to the CX 30, I like the looks of the Mazda better too. It’s nimble and fast, and I personally like the looks of it. We just move our front seats up a little bit if we have a third or fourth passenger, which is very seldom, and they’ve always seemed to be quite content, as it’s generally just for shorter trips anyway. The only thing I’m not crazy about is how small the side windows are, and if you want to put your arm up on the side, It’s a little bit difficult but I can live with it. I’m just not a fan of CVT engines either and Mazda doesn’t have that which I’m very happy with. I agree with Andrea totally ! We only paid 25,000 for our 2022 CX 30. Awd base model, and it has tons of options standard, a great deal we think.

I ended up getting the Kona due to price over the Seltos. Seltos has a lower price on paper. But every Kia dealership I called added approx $5000 markup to the price for no reason aside form they can. Kona was pretty much the price on the website. The Toyota dealership told me they were told by Toyota to not take any order for the Corolla Cross. And the Mazda I couldn't get over the Infotainment system. It should be noted that the prices do not include the destination charge. Add about $1,300 for that. My heart wants a Seltos or Kona. It should be noted that the base Kona in the U.S. is less equipped but also cheaper than the base Seltos. They're both stylish and roomy with great content. Questionable reliability though. Their prices are getting bold, pushing into Honda and Toyota territory when reliability is definitely not there. My head wants an HRV or Corolla Cross. They're the pragmatic choices. Unfortunately, they're also the most lackluster to look at and drive. The Trax appeals to my head and heart. Looks great. Very practical with its size and price. I'm VERY leery about long-term reliability though. Chevy really needs to up their warranty to Hyundai levels for me to feel comfortable buying a Trax.

Zack, Zack, Zack. Fair game for wanting to add the Trax, but no need to bury the CX-30 here. It’s a fantastic option in this class and you know it. Backseat room is fair game, but cargo space is such a subjective argument. What are people hauling these days? Dead bodies? You mentioned the turbo as being out of step with the industry and yet you said the Trax has a turbo and that’s not to mention the CX-30 has a non-turbo option. CX-30 has a very nice design (Ferrari Purosangue looks like it), upscale interior, excellent drive, relatively quiet cabin, great sound system, AWD, etc, etc. And have a look at the CX-30’s JD Power ratings and compare it to everything else on this list, and the RAV 4 while I’m at it. Is the CX-30 perfect? No. I can’t wait until they come out with a hybrid/EV option. Still, it’s a great option in this class and it’s an amazing option if you compare it to the luxury sub-compact options.

Kia Niro vs Chev Trax? Tough call they are very similar in size but the MSRP is about $4,700 US more for the Niro. Zack commented that the Niro HEV is underpowered. How does it compare to the 1.2L T in the Trax?
Looking at inventory for Trax in Seattle I see one dealer is selling some models at MSRP while the same dealer has a $2K markup on another Trax. The other dealer has more stock and is advertising MSRP with some discounted $1,200. A brand new, updated CUV at $21,400 is unbeatable for someone looking for that size vehicle with a 5 yr / 6t0,000 mile drivetrain warranty! Good call Zack.
That said, I have never been a GM fan. if I had the extra $5K I'd spring for the Niro as it has a solid, proven drivetrain (8+ yrs), much longer warranty, and will go twice as far on a gallon of gas in the city. I also confess to being the happy owner of a 2019 Niro PHEV😁

Well actually base model to base model, there is only a difference of $6,340 CAD/$4,595 USD which may be enough to sway people who are on a tighter budget. However, the Mazda comes standard with AWD and it has a lot more power in a 2.5L non-turbo engine vs the Trax with a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. You can't compare the CX-30's turbocharged 2.5L 4-cylinder with 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel, that's where the almost $12,000 CAD difference comes into play. They are night and day at that point. However, if you just want to drive an inexpensive FWD model, the Trax is tough to beat, but it doesn't compare with the CX-30 for driving dynamics. Different needs and wants.

Compare that to the Chevy three cylinder turbo??? What about the fact that the mazda has a (non cvt) transmission that is also one of the most reliable on the market compared to a new transmission from Chevrolet which is not too likely to latst very long?? I think long term reliablity is the key factor if you are thinking about dollars. It is nice that JD power rates all cars about the same for reliability but i would suggest checking multiple sources. If you were to do that, you would find that Mazda is consisently rated as the most reliable brand all around these days, even bettter than Toyota and if just feels so muich better :) However, I would recommend the CX-5 over the CX-30 have driven both. Good for young couple with no kids. If i may actually suggest an alternative then it would be cx-5. Cx-5 is actually not much bugger than the biggies in “subcompact” like HRV and taos. And It’s not much more expensive. Really give it a try if you are buying a subcompact. Its one of the smaller compact suvs and a really great alternative.

Not sure what I would pick for #5. Probably Kona, but that is basically the Kia. Not a fan of the HR-V: relatively expensive, has a mediocre AWD system and needs an optional powerplant or the Civic turbo as the standard engine. Since I live in snow country, the Trax is a no go from the start. Any "SUV" without the availability of AWD is only a pretender IMO.
