To the protesters: Let’s assume China yield to your demand and Hong Kong became independent. Now where would this independent Hong Kong get water, energy and food from? Last I checked, it is pretty hard to ship electricity from United States, Britain or even Taiwan to Hong Kong.

The construction of desalting plant has been proposed in the annual budget two years ago. Just have a look at how success Isreal is in water supplies by desalting method. In addition, every year HK government bought a fixed volume of water from Dongjiang River and the amount usually cannot be used up. Also, the cost becomes pricier year after year and in long term more comparable to desalting method. For the food supplies, Hong Kong is actually relying less on import from mainland China. Even in mainland China the food supplies itself becomes tight in recent years and increase the import from the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, etc. Just have a look at the outbreak of African swine fever there and the citizen eventually more on supplies from Canada and the price may be even cheaper than local supplies. Every HK citizen would know that HK independence is next to impossible once CCP still exist. I think there is no need to be serious and just ignore what the protesters said. But the ways that government handled on HK independence idea is worth to be discussed. Before CY Leung worked as a chief executive of HK since 2012 no one in HK would talk about independence issue. In this case, I would doubt who is the actual origin of HK independence.

hk wasn't successful under a British democracy but a 'dictatorship'...the only democracy China ever had was when Mao, because of his achievements of getting rid of western imperialists he was catapulted to a god like status and worshiped by the majority of chinese, everyone followed his ideals without questioning them.
