    • @lordblazer
      @lordblazer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I wouldn't say Americans are arrogant. I would just say the propaganda machine in America is much stronger than it is in Hong Kong. Which is true. Americans are mostly brainwashed. When we had our chance to speak up the propaganda machine berated #OWS again and again. People bought into it. Saying "they do not have a clear message" when they had a very clear message, it just takes more than 30 seconds to explain, and o baby boomers (old people) weren't having it. they made it look like a circus and so nothing got done from the protests alone. I am glad the occupy movement started to do actual things on the ground now,but that doesn't get media attention.

      I think that most people in America just aren't aware of the issue. I have supported this issue for some time know and I only know about it from the internet. the media only reports on the story's they think will get them the most viewership and even then they don't stay on it to long. I myself have done as much as I can to spread the word of this were I live and I have found people who were unaware of this but took great interest. if more people were made aware of this and someone organized people to show support in some way then I think America and other country's could show the people of Hong Kong that they have supporters across the world.

    • @swisslin
      @swisslin 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well obviously then you did not understand the main principle of diplomacty, both china and Great Britain have agreed to stay true to the interests of Hong Kong, now China has unfortunatly acted against what you would call a free election and a free mind of speach for the people of hong kong. They now need to sit together to find a solution no one is asking to start a bloody war because of this.

    I can't understand all of the negative comments towards the protesters. Hong Kong people deserve the right to be able to choose their own leader and direction. Democracy will work well in Hong Kong because the people are generally well educated. By any measurement you will be better off living in the United States than in China. I have been to China and Hong Kong. You can't even bring a newspaper from Hong Kong to China the government control is that great. Stay strong Hong Kong!

    The counter protesters were all speaking mandarin chinese lol.... clearly they were shipped in from the main land. You would think the they would at least ship in people from Guangzhou to pass off as legit hong kongers.
    In fact, protesters have been attacked by giant groups of middle aged men... men speaking putonghua. In a city full of people speaking Cantonese, where do you think busloads of middle aged putonghua speaking men come from?

    Hong Kong was better off as a British overseas territory. Extensions on the lease of the territory from the mainland had been negotiated in the past and it should have been done again. To hand it over to the hands of Chinese Communist Party was a crime, any semblance of a free society will inevitably be crushed.

      You're factually wrong. Hong Kong has doubled its GDP per capita (PPP) since 1997. It has experienced the fastest economic growth in its history during the Chinese rule.

    • @toomanysociopaths7806
      @toomanysociopaths7806 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hong Kong is a banking and investment center and the primary one for mainland China. As mainland China's industrialization and development really only started to pick up in the previous few decades (90's) the growth in Hong Kong reflects the growth and increased investment in mainland China, not the change in governance of the city. Hong Kong itself (and Taiwan) already had their industrialization way back in the 1970's which the mainland itself would have experienced if it were not for their Communist economic policies setting them back decades.
      Furthermore, GDP alone is not what makes a place worth living in, the rights of the people of Hong Kong were far more assured under the protection of the U.K.

    I am born and raised in hong kong China 🇨🇳 🇨🇳. Born post hand over in the early 1980s. It's sad that this young generation of Hong Kongers don't see and have no pride in their own culture and the growth and openning up of China. Too White washed with western ideology and forgot how Hong Kong came to be the Pearl of Asia. Its From the hard working, determined and never giving up generation of the 50s to 70s who made Hong Kong world renowned. Its separation from politics that gave Hong Kong its golden times back in the day. But now Hong Kong has falling into the dirtiness of politics and these Hong Kong teens used as a political tool from the west without even knowing it.

    This program and the host do a good job of conveying a street level perspective of the Occupy movement, but the picture is incomplete and lacking historical context (which I suppose is a shortcoming of the Vice formula where reporters breeze in and out of a place for a segment). I live in Hong Kong and am in favour of democracy, however the decision behind the election framework was made in Beijing, so the protestors need to be realistic about what can be achieved from this standoff with the local government (which deserves some criticism, but is 2000km from the actual seat of power). One couldn't help but feel inspired by the massive and peaceful turnout in the first few days of the movement. But this program doesn't show how the crowds dwindled in many parts of the city in the following days & weeks, and yet the protest leaders refused to remove barricades that disrupted key transport arteries in the cramped territory, along with the livelihoods of working class people such as taxi drivers, delivery people and small shop owners. It has gone on for nearly 3 weeks. You can label a movement as being peaceful, but when it starts to threaten the livelihoods of people who live pay check to pay check, it is practically a form of violence. Even veteran pro-democracy politicians and former Tiananmen leaders have now appealed to the students to rethink their tactics. The root of local discontent is the high cost of living, extreme property prices and increasing competition from Mainland China, as well as a lack of a cultural integration. I'm pissed off about some of these things too. Let's take a deep breath and consider that many people in the world face much worse oppression and that police forces in advanced democracies have done a lot worse to protesters than the HK police. To be fair, HK has also benefitted tremendously from a number of Chinese economic policies. Yes, let's appeal for a more reasonable form of democracy, protest if you feel the need to, but an extended occupation of the streets is counter-productive and does no one any good.

    Democracy only works if the people are educated on the responsibility of what being democratic really means.
    A wise man once said: "With great power comes great responsibility."
    This applies especially to democracy. To put irresponsible people in power is a miscarriage of the democratic process. You are not supposed to put the village idiot in charge just because you can. This isn't high school, this is real life. The people in power in China are all extremely educated and intelligent people who did something with their lives. Many are engineers, physicists, rocket scientists, people who really accomplished something in their lives and pushed their minds their entire lives. Before they were leaders they built bridges, roads, dams, power plants. Some even built entire cities where slums of mud brick once stood. China at its' core is really a meritocracy. Only people of great merit are allowed to rule. That is all China is really asking of Hong Kong. They are not allowed to elect a moron.
    America honestly needs something like this. The last time America had a real man of merit as President was JFK. What did he do? He was a real life war hero. PT 109 they made a movie about it. He saved a dozen people's lives in an act of genuine valor. He understood war. He understood what asking a man to die was all about. This is why he kept us out of Vietnam when he was alive. He also had the far vision to put a man on the moon which was the last great accomplishment this country has ever made.
    The last ten elections in America have been a choice between a douche and turd sandwich. China can see this a plain as day. They don't want Hong Kong electing an "Obama." Here we have a man who has not one accomplishment to his name before being president. They don't want a "George W Bush" type fool in there either. Bush was a man cheated out of the draft and then sent a million men to war. What a complete phoney and horrid leader he was.
    The Chinese are not blind to this. As I said the Chinese leadership are very smart and understand there are bigger things at stake here. China is a 5000 year old civilization and they are not going to let it be ruined by some fly night student protest. China has created a brilliant compromise for Hong Kong. They can have their universal suffrage. They have their democracy and elections. But China will also insist that they take "responsibility" for their democracy.
    No democracy without Responsibility. 没有责任就没有民主

      Your statement is typical of the small mindedness that is all to common in this country. Few can even conceive that there are people like me who would be moved to do something good without being paid for it. I am an intellectual and altruist. I write this for benefit of all good people who have the eyes to see and the ears to hear and want to live in a better world than the one that is currently presented to us.
      America is at best a mediocrity ruled by an inept and corrupt group of oligarchs who are the least capable, the least deserving, and the least effective rulers on the planet. I coin the term ineptocracy for what passes for government in this country. The protesters should really be here in America, in New York and in Washington DC. We really only have ourselves to blame for reelecting a congress with 11% approval rating. You call that a democracy. It is Idiocracy. China does not want this for their people and neither should America. We demand better.

    In a corrupted democracy, your votes are often bought, at a price. You at that moment, is a boss, to be begged for votes. You get stuffs from voting, which is almost the definition of the economy of democratic politics, although in a more shady and illegal way. In a "clean" autocracy (which never happened, the monopoly of power itself is the utmost corruption), the tyrant never need to give you any goodies for political legitimacy. All he needs is to give you a phone call, make you disappear, or jail you, or torture your lawyer and your family (happened on a daily basis in Mainland China), and you will subdue, and few if any one will ever know that you suffered because of information blockage.
    So, do you want a corrupted democracy, or a "clean" autocracy? Any one with common sense will choose the only correct choice. And I mean anyone, because even the tyrant himself are his friends are not safe, once they loose their power, or get old; because without the rule of law governed by the principles of human rights underpinned by democracy, no one is fundamentally safe. Look at what happened in Chinese political struggles currently. The old and retired members of even the central politburo were persecuted through pre-trial court trials by the dictator of the day Xi Jinping. And guess what would happen to Xi once he retire.
    I am a Mainland Chinese studying in HK, and I have the utmost respect and gratitude for the Hongkongese who took to the street in this movement, defending the freedom shared by me (and at this point, I can do nothing in return, but hide, against my conscience). I wish I could openly support you in any form, but too I am afraid, of the dictatorial regime that have the might to secretly persecute me, torture me, jail me and do the same to my family. Some supporters in Mainland China who supported Occupy Central openly were jailed, just because they took photos on their slogans and distributed on the internet, watched by the spies of the Chinese Communist Party.
    If HK is not free, then China is not free. What you are doing, young Hongkongese, is defending the last bit of freedom that China has. Keep on. You have friends in Mainland, in silence, with indignation and tears.

      Are you serious? If China would get economic sanctions it's people would starve, so how is China no longer under control of outside powers. If China gets in U.S. way all U.S. need to do is stop importing Chinese goods and China can say farewell to it's economy. China is literally living thanks to U.S. And you obviously know nothing about political situation in China. China is artificially created mammoth which is kept together only through totalitarian means, if you would remove totalitarian rule from China it would collapse into dozens of small countries. Big China is great tool for the west, it provides cheap labour to western economy, it serves as good boogeyman on international stage (Chinese economy started it's rapid growth at the same time Soviet union collapsed), and it makes it much easier for U.S. to deal with pacific countries when those countries have huge Chinese army at their doorstep. I wouldn't say that leadership of puppet state is very effective.

    For 150 years, Hong Kong never demanded or protested once for democracy under British rule - Great Britain simply assigned governors to Hong Kong. So as much as I support the protesters' right to protest, it is incredibly hypocritical for the west to support democracy in Hong Kong (when they have not done so during those 150 years) and it is extremely naive of the students to think that somehow universal suffrage is a right because HK is so progressive. China, not unlike countries in the middle east, is not built for democracy, and the existing CCP will not be forced into any drastic changes.
    Additionally, under the Basic Law, it clearly states: "The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall be selected by election or through consultations held locally and be appointed by the Central People's Government. The method for selecting the Chief Executive shall be specified in the light of the actual situation in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and in accordance with the principle of gradual and orderly progress. The ultimate aim is the selection of the Chief Executive by universal suffrage upon nomination by a broadly representative nominating committee in accordance with democratic procedures."
    According to this, Beijing really hasn't done anything wrong when they said they will vet the candidates. Except the current chief exec fully supports Beijing, and not HK. What HK needs is a leader who is Hong Kongese - but he can't be fully supportive of HK without giving concession to what Beijing wants. So in that sense, the students have made their point but now it's time to have a realistic endgame.

      tsar s The US supports democracy, around the world, but doesn't do action about it. The problem with your rational is that you think everyone knows about democracy. In Saudi-Arabia, their current regime is probably more successful than a democracy in Saudi-Arabia would be. The Saudis have never experienced democracy and Capitalism, therefore, if they went from a totalitarian kingdom to a democracy, it would be chaos. Its just like what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Afghans and Iraqis have never had a democracy, they don't understand it, and they aren't educated enough to vote for the right person. In a country like Saudi-Arabia, the winner of an election would be the one with the most propaganda. That's how Mao Zedong in China got all the uneducated peasants to join him. They were uneducated, and when Mao promised them land, they all followed him.
      It would be the same scenario in Mainland China as well. The HKers are educated and had been under a democratic and Capitalist rule for decades under the British. Mainland China on the other hand, is filled with many uneducated farmers, who, if given the right to vote, would most likely chose the wrong leader, because of the sickening Chinese propaganda the CCP use. The current regime in China works, and eventually, democracy will take over in China, when the population gets more educated, when there is more population in cities than rural farm land.
      We do what the people want, sometimes you have to accept the government of another country, and realize that you aren't going to accomplish anything by boycotting and refusing diplomatic and economic ties with a country just because they aren't the same form of government you have

      tsar s The US supports any pro-democratic political parties or organizations world-wide. The US govt openly stated its support for the HK protesters and the British PM have already begun talks with Beijing. The US does give a shit about democracy in other countries. That's why we support the current Ukrainian government, as it is pro-west and was voted in democratically, contrary to the dictatorship Yanokovych created. Look at the Cold War. We fought/supported 4 wars trying protecting democracy and freedom in other countries during the Cold War. HK, under British rule, was Capitalist, and was allowed to vote for district leaders and governor of HK. It couldn't vote for federal leadership, but it could vote for provincial/territorial leadership.
