      Are you guys for real? Seriously, is every single person a liberal today? These folks are people who REFUSE to save when they were working. They had plenty of opportunities and several decades to save for retirement. The government should NOT reward lazy/unproductive citizens. My grandfather moved from China when he was 13 with $0 and 3 pairs of clothes and died an owner of a real estate company worth millions of dollars.

      I am sending up good thoughts for anyone who listens. I am from LA, where we too have a large amount of economic refugees. We are experiencing a rise in communicable disease due to the microbial soup of poverty, defecation and despair. Disease knows no social boundaries. Repeated attempts to sanitize and eradicate viral borne diseases in areas not exposed to prolonged solar ultraviolet radiation leaches into our food chains. An elderly body is ideal as the immune system rapidly decays. And I am not addressing the obvious moral decay. That does not matter to an earphone wearing moral tone deaf pampered strata. Par example- 20 something drops his expensive ride off at an urban car wash. His tires rolled over the nasties. Poor below legal wage employee hand details car. Voila! The reincarnation of Typhoid Mary. 20!something hands him crumbled currency, employee then distributed currency up and down the country. Then someone gets on a plane. To paraphrase the centuries old poem, “for want of a dwelling, a kingdom was lost.” Fortunately, here in LA, the cranes of redemption are building the scaffolding necessary to at least, alleviate the misery and doom as thousands of affordable housing units are being built.

  • @miwanabanana
    @miwanabanana 6 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    I'm from the Philippines and this problem happens here as well. Instead of having a lavish birthday party and presents my mom threw herself a birthday party at a home for the abandoned elderly. She invited her friends and asked them to bring party food or donate instead. None of her friends showed up because they were "busy" but at least they gave her money for the party and the elderly. The saddest story came from a 90 year old grandma whose family said they were taking her on a trip.She was so excited as it was her first time leaving her town. They drove into Metropolitan Manila, days away from her rural town, dropped her off a mall, and never returned for her. She had to beg people to help her and on top of that she spoke only Ilocano, which not everyone speaks. By the time she managed to get back they were long gone and the home had already been sold. They dumped her like an old dog without money or clothes. She was homeless for 10 years before a shelter employee found her and took her in.

      If they have no money then they most likely didn't do much to build up the city, and are probably mostly mainlanders who moved to hong kong that weren't even wanted at the time. Either that or they didn't save and invest money, and there's no excuse in super-capitalist hong kong not to take capitalist actions. It's the only way to do it.
      Technically they may have worked construction jobs or something but to be honest, there was no shortage of millions and millions of mainlanders begging to come work for basically free back then, so they individually weren't that valuable.

    I think people should sponsor elderly people the same way they do for babies and children. I don't know how people would feel about that; but, I would very much like to help an older couple or an individual on a monthly/annual basis. Whatever I can do financially, so they can be more comfortable in their old age. My parents are in their 70's now, I cannot imagine them in a situation like this.

      Hong kong is uber capitalist. It's to be expected that they don't want to become a welfare state. They're whole deal is that you don't have to pay any real amount of taxes, so they attract people and business from all over the world. If they start collecting more taxes, business will leave, and the one true advantage of Hong Kong will disappear. Doing them a greater favor by keeping taxes low and drawing in the world's top business and financial services to the city. And literally everybody in Hong Kong knows they have to save and invest while young, which isn't hard to do given how much money you can make there (thanks to the low taxes in large part).

    What a horrible politician. How was he even elected? A nation is measured by how it treats it's people! There is no perfect system and especially capitalism. While it creates rich snobby people, the poor and elderly are left alone. They are the one's who work, they are the one's who give taxes - they are the majority! Countries must learn from each other and take the best qualities from each government.
    The elderly here need help. Even in the home of capitalism, Social Security in the US gives elderly a chance to live with dignity towards the end of their lives. In the EU, elderly live and work happily knowing they are safe when they're old. The money they get - they spend back into the economy for a growing sector.

And also those old forgotten poor people u mentioned never complains because they have this very specific Chinese Culture. The cause of this crucial social problem lies in the incompetence & corruptiveness of the local Govt. There are so much money & riches among the very rich people living opulently in Hong Kong that a special tax on Fortune could have easily help in many ways. Since the return of the British Colony to China, huge amount of wealth & money have been expatriated abroad to other countries.Regards.

When I first arrived in Hk, I tried to give bread to a homeless old guy , coz I saw him digging food so I bought packed bread for him, but instead of thanking me.. I got screamed at. On the 2nd occasion, I tried to help out to an old lady to cross the busy streets, instead the old lady hit me with her cane. I saw the south korean documentary about elderly people not being able to survive because there was no system in place or barely one to help them out and seeing this, one cannot help but see the similarities. Here in Canada my parents get a monthly pension that they can survive on. Why is it so hard to do that in these counties? Its one of the saddest things I've watched, they work so hard all their lives and contributed to society only to be kicked to the curb and forgotten.

      that is wonderful in your country that way. My eldest son especially is so caring to me and said hewants to make my life happy and comfortable. He shows it too even though he is married. Only thing isyoung ones don't want the responsibility of an oldie living in their home. I can see in a way why....and that is old people (real oldies) can get negligent and almost set the home on fire and hurt themselves tooaccidentally and sometimes in those extreme cases they have to go to a resthome but a lot of young oneshere stick their parents in rest homes. I wish some believed here that a member of the familyshould stay at home with the parent and be their carer but as they have large mortgages to pay theyhave to be at work. That's why your country is great....... they all live in the same home.So many don't value the wisdom of the elderly too in the western world.
