There are just so many bills and things to go around and not enough extra income. Let's discuss this for a little bit here.

My son Jacob was turning 16 and I was determined to buy him a new YZ125. I bit the bullet and got a loan to purchase it.
My father told me I was being foolish to go into debt for a dirt bike, but I felt strongly that I needed to do it.
7 months later my 16 year old son was tragically killed in a auto/train accident.
It's been since 2002 and to this day I am so grateful I went ahead and went against my father's counsel. The video I have of him getting that bike is the greatest treasure I have.

Ammon, if you see this. Here’s my 2 cents.
I am 29 years old and grew up riding with my dad. In high school; my dads career took a turn where we had to sell all of our bikes. I didnt ride from 17 until I was 22. I bought a ktm 250 2t on credit and it was a terrible decision at the time. The payments were very taxing. I sold the bike and didn’t have one again until I was 26. My friends all rode and it was so hard to see them out riding all the time and being home. In 2020 I was lucky to be in a place I was able to buy a new kx450 and by luck my dad bought a 2019 ktm300. We spent two days out riding together after a decade. My dad decided after those two rides, that he was too old to continue. I will cherish those two days forever. It was fun to see my dad still had some skills and to show him how far my riding had come. I am now a father of 2 young kiddos and again find myself without a bike, but my oldest (6) has a crf 50 and is loving the process of learning. I love teaching equally as much and look forward to when we get to ride together. I say all that to say, don’t rush things. Focus on your schooling, get a good solid vehicle and work hard so that when things are better financially, you can get the bike you want. In the mean time, go all out on the fishing trips. My dad and I have enjoyed hunting together for the last 14 years and it has become the thing around which we have bonded most. Take all the time you can with your old man, no matter what you’re doing. Soak in the time, the stories, the lessons and the friendship. Best wishes pal. Leave a single track!

Last year I got a lot of hate from a lot of people. I took a withdrawal from my pension and purchased my two youngest boys dirt bikes and my daughter a four wheeler. Like someone else said, we only live once and I can’t take anything with me. But the joy they have had and me watching them has been priceless. They have came so far that they have upgraded. The youngest boy moved up to the older ones KLX 140. And I just bought the older one a 2024 KX 250x. To say I was worried about him is an understatement. But to watch him on it and see how well he has done is amazing. They all three entered their first race last weekend. My daughter and youngest son placed fourth in their classes. And the oldest on the 250 was in a class with 450’s and he placed sixteenth out of 64 riders. And was clearing a 35’ double that scared dad asked him not to do lol. I was so proud of them for their accomplishments. The wait of that first lap to see them make it around seemed like an eternity of worry. I’m 45, I’ve worked since I was 14. To some I may have made a bad decision but the smiles on their faces and memories we make I know will last forever. Tomorrow is never promised….live today.

Kyle, I can relate to this guy.
I was a young father @23 out of college and had to put my db hobby down for a while and prioritize my free time raising a family. Fishing was some of the greatest times for me and my son as it was with me and my father as a child.
I couldn’t afford the sport as a young married. But we made do.
Those moments in time are treasure. My son and I tried DB together but it wasn’t his thing. There’s a huge story there but blessed nonetheless.
I was 33 when I got back on in 2006 and it was a KTM 300 EXC.
Now he supports me in my passion while I support him in his: sports radio. 30 years later- Still love to fish together and chat like father and son. 😊
Like Kyle said: work back to it and make it your motivation. Father and son and then you pass those experiences down to yours.
I so did that and it helped me. It was my escape later in life. My wife loves me doing this now. I’m blessed that she supports something that she knows is not us but me. Maybe she needs a break from me too. It’s definitely reciprocal .🤣
Happy and blessed to still rip it at 51 and a wife and son who love’s me back and supports me and my need for throttle therapy. ❤️ 💪🏻

Getting outdoors, focusing on the moment, disconnecting from the mind really help my mental health. I have been riding dirt bikes since I was 13. I am now 68. I ride in the Nevada mountian desert most every week, for all of these years. I have never spent more that 3 grand for a dirt bike..... Beat the shit out of them. Enjoy them. $12K thoughts about a TH-cam dirt bike porn fantasy is of course fun! (which is why I watch this channel occasionally) When you are riding in the real world. The joy is riding. The bike is just a piece of metal rubber and oil, that you are having fun destroying!! I agree with you that riding a bike has been incredibly important for my mental health over the years. When you ride.... you cannot be up in your head..... My father first pointed this out to me when I was 17, about dirt bikes giving friend of his life saving purpose so many years ago.

I didn’t have a father to ride with or the help with bikes or college. I learned in Jr. high and high school to buy friends broken down stuff, fix it up, enjoy it for a while then sell it to fund the next project until I had what I wanted. Starting college I had to start over again and I flipped enough vehicles to pay for college while I also built my way back up to almost current year bikes again while in school. Fast forward a few decades and I now have a sizeable collection of restored vintage bikes along with a small fleet of Yamaha and KTM’s for different conditions...where there’s a will, there is a way.

Unfortunately I am the only one in my family who has interest in them but maybe when my brother gets a little older he will pick up an interest in them as well. Although I don't have anyone to ride with I still have managed to have more fun on my bike in the past few days than I have ever have had beforehand from something I bought. Good advice. The last time I took out a loan was back in 2006. This translates to 3 motorcycles, 1 ATV, 2 boats, 5 vehicles, 78 acres of recreational property and my first home all paid for in cash. All I do is reverse the process. I pay myself a payment every month until I have the cash to buy something then go buy it. Turns out it’s really hard to build wealth when you give your entire paycheck to the bank in the form of payments every month and have too much money tied up in things that go down in value. The value of all my toys with engines that depreciate is less than half my annual income. You don’t need to be borrowing money to buy a toy that goes down in value. You’re not congress. But hey, you’re an adult and if you want to make unwise financial decisions, knock yourself out.

Bike is long paid off but ever since our executive administration changed in 2020 and inflation has absolutely run amok, I can no longer ride regularly, let alone race. I was able to be patient and wait for things to come to me after putting in a lot of work.... I was never happier than finally getting back on the bike. I have never been more devastated than to lose riding for a second time. I feel like I was told to go to college, get a good job, make something of yourself.... I did all that. I should be reaping the rewards of that but instead I get to struggle to pay for groceries and pay the utility bill. I get by but motorcycles are right out. No. But it’s also not a worst case scenario. Hindsight I do wish I had joined the military right of high school and started flying when I was younger, but I’m just glad I’m doing it now.

Last, try to find things you can do now that are fulfilling. For me, it was mtn biking until I could afford a motor. I still like mtn bikes and it is good physical fitness while on a trail.

I'm 57 yrs old....I started riding at age 6 on a 2.5hp purple chopper minibike!!! LMAO Then went to a Honda Trail 70 (the tank!) Then an XR 75, YZ 80, Yamaha DT 125 (hated it!) then CR 125, CR 250 etc....stopped riding in my late 30's for many of the reasons cited in the video. Got married, bought a house, new car and so on (no kids....eventually adopted a girl). I just got back into motocross and hare scrambles after being off a dirt bike for 25+ years (have had a HD Softail Classic since 2007) !!!
Last year I bought a 2023 KTM SX-F 350 and it was the best decision I've made in many YEARS!!! Every single time I lay eyes on my bike, I see my Dad in the pit, trying to ride (he never could! LOL). My dad is the one who bought my first 3 -4 bikes (I never even asked). My mom and dad would pack a cooler and drive to the pit (we had a monster dirt pit and trails 1/4 mile from the house as I grew up in the woods in NJ). My Dad is no longer here but I still get emotional sometimes when I walk into the garage and I can smell the 2 stroke Bel Ray oil in my head, and see my dad with a big smile as we ride.

Hold up, so many of us going thru the same thing.
Long story, short as possible. We both had bikes back in 2022. We've been riding since he was 3yrs old. Kid was 11yrs old and rode my Crf450r. He went from a 50cc 4 wheeler, XR70, CRF150R, TE250 to his current stead.
Fast forward and one bad divorce later. He and I came back in touch with one another after a year apart. First thing he said " I need to buy a new bike dad" this crushed me because his bike was part of the divorce due to legal ownership etc. So it was sold off to pay legal expenses. My ex absolutely cleaned me out.
Now he owns a 2023 Gas Gas EX450f, I own a 2022 Husqvarna FX450. We just went on our first ride this past weekend, for his breakin period. He just bought it new, left over stock. He got one hell of a deal, $8k..

And I have a 1-1/2 and 5 month old that once old enough will ride. I tried to talk my wife into learning but this is how I get to spend a lot of time with my boys. I get up everyday and bust my ass at work for them. My 8 yr old has a 2024 yz65 and my 12 yr old just got a rm85 that’s a 06. I ride a 02 rm250 and my oldest rides my dad’s Klx300 but I’m looking for a 2 stroke 125 for him now and my dad is getting a Beta 300. Being part of the club has helped so much in me getting my bike and my kids getting bikes. I have a KTM50 and drz70 also that once my youngest one outgrows I’m probably going to give it away to someone that don’t have the money to buy one. Maybe I can get a kid into riding and keep them out of trouble.

I have a 97 Suzuki dr350 that i regularly take on technical single track, mountain roads, sand, desert, etc. Lots of these bikes can be had for $2,000 and are incredibly reliable. They can also be used as commuters at college to save some money on gas vs having a car. Many times, no bike is the best option of you cant afford it. But my point is, theres a lot of fun to be had between no bike, and a $12,000 ktm 300xcw

People talk about this sport being expensive but it's still relatively cheap compared to many others out there. Heck, a new base wakeboard boat is 125K. There is never a time you should finance a motorcycle. If you have to finance a motorcycle that means one of two things. You haven't saved enough money yet or you are buying more motorcycle than you can afford. The same thing is true for vehicles. People think they "deserve" things they can't afford, and finance vehicles then wonder why they don't have money later.

I was in the same predicament many many many years back. I sold my YZ so I could pay for my last year of college. I missed not having a bike to ride but I lived through it. As you get older you'll find that your priorities change, and sacrifices have to be made. Do not take out a loan to buy a bike, you'll regret it especially if your living on your own and the realities of paying rent and life's everyday expenses slap you in the face. Once I got my carer on track and had disposable income I bought a bike. It was a barely used 2003 KX500. I still have it to this day. Yes, I'm a old dude I'm 62 and the older I get the faster I was. Damn was i fast. Riding was a big part of my life as it is to most of us that started young. You'll be OK. Get your career on track start making small financial investments for the future and then buy a bike.

I also agree financing a dirt bike is not the move, at least in general. Like if you’re going to put $7k down and finance 1-2k so you can get that brand new WR450 or something then I can understand that and not wanting to wait a few more months to acquire that cash but absolutely do not finance a bike if you can’t realistically pay it off in a few months at most. If you have to finance the entire 9/10k then you likely can’t really afford the payments as is. Save money and grind for it. The bikes will still be here for the foreseeable future. Don’t put yourself into a financial tumble just to get a bike. Wait till it makes sense.

My 2 cents: Dirt bikes are a nice to have thing, not a need to have. There are lots of ways to spend time with family and friends that are very inexpensive or cost nothing. Hiking, camping, fishing, simple team ball ⚽️ sports. Ever wonder why most of the world plays and is so enthusiastic about soccer? All you need is a ball and a place to play and you are all set. Simple inexpensive fun. Sure I like to ride and will continue to do so as long as I can afford to. But if can’t afford it, it’s gone and I do other things I enjoy.
It sure doesn’t help anything now that people think they all need fancy fuel injected electronic hard enduro machines with the latest suspension tech. 10-12K for a bike! Then you need a truck to transport it, tools to maintain it, riding gear, etc. Does that sound affordable for most people? Not really IMHO. All this fancy complex stuff has really cut a lot of people out of the sport. All you really need is a simple bike and some reasonable riding areas to have some fun. It doesn’t have to be hard enduro and all the fancy expensive stuff that goes along with it. Keep it fun and simple and more people can afford to ride.

Yea, over the last 20 years I’ve read the forum users or people online with issues, and we brush it off as a rare occurrence. But when you finally get one, and are locked out of the ecu, and is all electronic including the power valve actuator, you find yourself in a repair desert. Last Sunday the bike bogged and I broke 2 ribs and got my spleen. I feel stuck with this bike, still going at ktm cause this an electrical glitch…not getting into the massive amount of parts and time spent plus guinee pigging this thing until it hurt me.

@@mark_Hershey wow that’s so weird. I’m currently trying to deal with my bike randomly bogging down every once in a while when in gear with the clutch pulled in (on a 22 TE300i). I just got a obd2 reader and adapter for my bike. I set my rpms to spec. It was running good but I got out on the trail it started being weird. Usually cranking up the idle helps with the issue (I also need to learn how to mess with the air bypass screw. Still haven’t found the right setting for that).
I’m thinking I need to take my reader on the trail with me and see what my rpms are doing while all the way to temp for trail riding. I’ve been dealing the issue since I got the bike (got bike at used at 20 hrs and it now has just over 40). I read that changing the ccps might also help me as a lot of times when that is bad it seems to have a sporatic idle?
Who knows. Fingers crossed that works 🤞. I was hoping to think of suggestions that I’ve seen but it sounds like you’ve covered everything that I’ve come across in my research. Good luck to you finding out what’s wrong with your bike. Seems like it’s been a pain.

    • @mark_Hershey
      @mark_Hershey 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

The tpi’s suffered from ccps more, their sensors are different and more likely to crack or leak and that would absolutely cause what you’re dealing with. Also, top end maintenance is 15 hours, it’s in your manual. Yea it’s ridiculously short interval, but the reason I bring it up is too much blow by into the crankcase can mess with the ccps. Another thing is learn how to check tps and adjust it. My issue isn’t the same as yours. My bike runs incredible, but once in wile it will just not take throttle. I jump a lot and it’s dangerous, it got me. If I just trail rode it would just be annoying.
