Timing chain cassette lost plastic covers and the chain it’s loose even the tensioner doesn’t rich the chain so you need take out the engine and put all timing components to get fixed

Someone removed the acoustic pillow noise dampener from under the plastic intake plenum. The intake is hollow and that accustic dampener stops all the engine noise from reaching that hollow intake manifold.

Time for a new timing chian and guide's. It's a major job. The easiest way is to remove the transmission to access the chain on the passenger side. The driver's side is on the front. Maybe do the driver's side first and see if that clears thing's up.

rear tensioner is easy to replace you dont need to get a new vehicle just because it makes this noise all you have to do is take off the passenger front tire and remove the plastic tabs in the rear fender wall and fold it back its plastic so you wont hurt it. it is a black 20 somthing milimeter socket

+michaelheiland123654 You're both incorrect, you can do the side and front, the back is what you can't do without an engine pull. If your guides fell apart, you can't fix that without a pull afaik

@@garybeltrand5802 Nope, just run it till it dies. To make it last a bit longer i suggest using a quart of lucas oil stabilizer in place of a quart of oil. It will quiet down the noise and may eliminate the imfamous 2k-3k RPM broken primary cassette rattle. However it will not do anything for the marbles-in-can rattle at idle...and it also wont do anything if you have the ear deafening "death rattle". Ive used it in many SOHC 4.0s and it has done wonders and i firmly believe Lucas extends the life of the timing chain and components.

@@W0RLDSSMALLESTVI0LIN Thanks for the info, was wondering if an additive might help. The rattle isn't that loud, I'll give Lucas a shot before dumping it. Kind of curious how long it will run with that issue. Guess I'll just make sure my towing/road coverage is up to date when using it.

michaelheiland123654 I agree that this engine is badly designed. I think it's done purposely by the manufacturer to try and prevent people from being able to fix their own vehicles. Also I don't like that you can not check transmission fluid or add any without a special tool.

    • @mattweeks2272

the mechanic all 4?? The 4.0 v6 has 2 chains, one on the front for the 3 cylinders on the drivers side, and one on the rear for the passenger side cylinders. That doesn’t change if it’s a 4x4 or a rwd. The 4.6 2v v8 also offered in this generation explorer has one large timing chain on the front for all 8 cylinders. Again, this does not vary based on rwd or 4x4
