Hilux is reliability, i drove my first hilux for over 15 years. It never leave me on the road. I drove it everywhere, hills, valleys, off road and highway..no issues with it.
My 2015 SR5 Hilux was plagued with issues, clunky tail shaft, warped breaks, hand break that never worked, 2 leaking water pumps, transmission computer died leaving me stranded and massive DPF issues, oh what a fucking feeling!. I’ll never buy another Toyota in my life after the way they dealt with it
I bought a new work mate. It shat the gear box it was covered under warranty. After that, I sold it to my mate and the engine overheated and killed it. Required a new engine. He was towing a relatively light load. Nothing against Toyota at all but they do have flaws.
Toyota outdateted Technology still using the old convensional transmision gearbox less mode less safety feature low Technology automotive behind Ford ranger and Mitsubishi Triton GSR
I’m looking to buy a Ute soon and recently borrowed a 17 year old Hilux with nearly 300k. I took it light off roading as well as 10-12 hours drives, with over 2k in total. Despite its age and mileage, I did not experience a single issue. I wouldn’t have the same trust in a Ford and certainly don’t believe all these complicated electronics will stand the test of time but I’m open to hear otherwise.
I have taken delivery of a V6 Wildtrak with premium pak. Had to wait longer for that option. I will lift the suspension and add 33 inch AT tyres and go back to a 17 inch rim to do that. At present, average around town fuel consumption in 4A mode is 10.2 lts/100km. Highway cycle is 9.9 lts/100km. I will be removing the roller shutter to fit a canopy, front and rear TJM bars, 150 litre long range fuel tank, cargo roller floor to set up as a tourer. I must say the LED matrix lights are fantastic. Best headlights of any car I have owned, just brilliant and no need to add other light bars, they are that good. Good job Ford.
Payload is not what you can put in the tub it’s the total combined weight of all things including people, accessories and whatever else you’re carrying. FYI
Fully agreed however, where I am from, I bought my 2017 Hilux for 530,000 and today I am being offered 499,000 for it. That car's resale is crazy, I doubt any of the competition can beat that, plus it still beast offroad and reliable but it had seen its best days in terms of everything else

@@Im-mv6bf Ford had to outsell Hilux in Australia because no other country on this planet the Ranger can ever dream of compete with the Hilux. Ask anyone from South America, Africa, Middle East and Asia. Even the Antarctica.
Have you been to the vehicle auctions and seen how many Hilux utes are for sale and how cheap they are fleet buyers and rental buyers don’t pay anywhere near what retail does, what’s Toyota’s biggest buyer fleet so have a think about it.
Let's not expect perfection from car brands, but appreciate every effort they put in to make our lives better than ever. Both are good pick-ups.... It's up to the buyer's interests. 😊😊
Average fuel consumption for my Hilux is 12.5 ltrs/100. Now that's carrying a constant 400kgs in the back. Plus, long-range fuel tank and bullbar. Mine does nothing but country driving with very little town work. Put the 3.5 ton trailer on the back, and it blows out to 18 to 22 litres per 100 wind dependant. As for engine noise, yes, it's there as is bad wind noise. Put the Lovell suspension upgrade in the Hilux, and it makes the world of difference tows nicer and better planted on different surfaces. Yes, it's showing its age now compared to the newer utes, but with less electronics to go wrong, it's more bush proof, plus every farm or station has a hilux somewhere hiding so finding parts is not really a problem outback. It's a proven platform compared to the ranger, which is still plagued with problems . Took a new v6 ranger for a decent drive the other day. Yes, while the engine is good, the electronics in the car were way to over powering and off putting. Plus, the salesperson said they were still having issues with the gearbox and a few other areas. Toyota's aftersales are far better than Fords as well. For me, Toyota, for the win still. Newer is not always better. Will be interesting to see the 2024 Hilux upon release.
One day at a time 😊 I hope you still alive in 2024. You will rather wait for Toyota to catch up rather than acknowledge the future is already here. Your assessment that newer is not always better is contradicted by you waiting for the new release in 2024. Also you admit that Hilux is only better after a suspension upgrade. Be real mate, Hilux today is outclassed by many of its competitors. The only arguments Hilux fanboys have is past reputation and future aspirations. In my humble opinion; one does not measure current success or failure on the past or the future but in the now, as you live one day at a time❤
@@chriscross2209 Finally, someone with a brain! Toyota’s are only reliable because they are very underpowered and outdated. When Toyota update to new technology they turn to shit. Just have a look at the engine problems on the new 300 series. But shhh Toyota fanboys don’t want to hear that, or will make up an excuse.
hahaha, it's a no-contest. the Hilux is more reliable and won't let you down. the Ford...is a Ford. Resale value will also last a lot lot longer on the Toyota. It seems to me that the only reason you'd buy the Ford, is if you need serious towing power in a small truck, and can afford to trade it in before it starts breaking down. The toyota legenday reliability and resale value need no advertising
All I can say is that all car brands have their own unique problems, I know people who complained about the Hilux transmission issues and I know Ranger owners who complained about the transmission as well, I owned both the previous gen Ranger and the Hilux GD6 and never experienced any issues
Ranger making hilux a better vehicle. Customers win. No competition and things get boring. Competition is everything. Both beautiful vehicles and capable.
We were surprised in Thailand that we could not test drive I knew Toyota pickup. One of the two Ford dealerships in our area didn't even have a 4x4 to test drive. Isuzu vcross wasn't impressive on the test drive. The best we drove was the Ford wildtrak 4x4. 😊
Testing your every car brand in rally championship if your car could become champion in the offroad and onroad long distance endurance not broke down engine problems, sterling, breaking, that mean your car is better perfect driving performance like Mitsubishi Triton and pajero evolution holding the Guinness books of world Record
Happy to disclose the influence: There is none. As I say in the video, you can get the Ranger with a 2,0-litre, but Ford's sales split shows buyers are choosing the V6 in far greater numbers in high-wnd versions of the Ranger and at the time we filmed this video both models were the mainstream flagship variants in their respective ranges. This is just top model v top model and if Toyota were to drop a version of the LandCruiser's V6 into the HiLux we'd run the comparison again. - Kez
I have a Ford Ranger 2019 and really wanted to love the vehicle as its technology, comfortability and luxury is far superior than the Hilux. However, my 2019 now has 35000km on, the load bin started cracking after its first gravel road on less than 10000km, after fitting a bushtech canopy by preferred installers and professionals it just got worse, now currently travelling through Botswana this vehicle is shaking itself and my wallet to pieces and today even the electronics started acting up. This is a 4x4 Dcab 10speed and i love the gearbox in the sand. However, it still stays unreliable and will not last. I almost cancelled halve my trip due to this unreliability, but paid good money for it, so will soldier on. Sadly to say, as soon as i get back to South Africa this vehicle will be stripped, fixed and traded for a Toyota. Now i will have to face my Toyota friends after advocating for this vehicle. Ford doesn’t want to take responsibility nor the canopy manufacturer. I see now with the newer models that you need to purchase load bin reinforcing at over R3000.00 which indicates that Ford knows that their load bins are weak. At a price tag of over R850k you shouldn’t have to purchase reinforcing brackets. Please test all aspects on comparison of these vehicles before reviewing it. Ford is capable, but not reliable. Have a wonderful day all.
Its going to be interesting to see if Hilux keeps its market share. This model isn’t being updated until 2025 and it’s already lacking in a few areas particularly comfort. It will need to contend with the new Ranger/Amarok which will probably be ready for a mid cycle update by 2025 and the new triton/navara. Most people change their cars every 4-5 years now days while still in warranty, negating to an extent Toyota’s reliability advantage and buyers from 25-45 tend to gravitate more towards better tech these days. Going to be a hard slog for Hilux.
Boo Hoo Toyota have pocketed years of sales profits whilst often not offering much in return in the way of tech, comfort, standard features and value. They can afford to be number 2 for a while.
It did keep market share in 2011, despite scraping all its work on the new 2012 Hilux, when the Ranger was released, and taking 3 more years to be released (just in time to be squashed by the 2015 Ranger). Aussies love buying archaic vehicles, especially from Turdota.
there are two models under the hilux badge, the 2wd fleet job for $35k and the 4x4 private buyers get like the SR5 which have high margin. Toyota sell heaps of 2wd but fewer 4x4, like under 20% of their sales. The ranger is opposite, they sell tonnes of high margin XLT and Wildtrak and now Raptor, but much fewer fleet sales. Essentially they would be making 2-3x the dollars toyota gets from sales even being number 2, hence the sticker package rogue etc. Next hilux I'm sure they'll go all out and try and get that sweet upper margins
For doing the big lap around Australia, I would definitely go for a Hilux. At least it’d guarantee a breakdown-free trip. I cant say the same for the Ranger
I was amazed how under powered my Isuzu Dmax was towing a small 16" caravan. No way I would tow much more with it. My Santa Fe 2.2 diesel towed the caravan more effortlessly. I've got a Ranger Platinum on order ... Should fill the spot nicely until Hyundai finally release their ute with the straight 6 diesel.
The HiLux GR Sport will get the returned 165kW/550Nm engine, but for now the Rogue keeps the same 150kW/500Nm outputs as the rest of the 2.8-litre range. You can read more about the GR Sport at www.drive.com.au/news/2023-toyota-hilux-gr-sport-unveiled-australia/
Didn’t a 10 year old 2.8 Colorado have that output you go girl. Yah toyota. So impressive. What about current 5 star safety, toyota will wait a few more years because profit over setting benchmark stands isn’t important.
U must be paid by ford hey Paul 😂 show us on the doll where Toyota hurt u 😂 face it mate fords suck, been burnt too many times and will never go back, and now we know with the ranger that if u drive in 4h on the sand the transmission overheats after 5 mins…. Yeh it’s not a 4x4 but a softroader that I wouldn’t trust on a gravel driveway let alone anything involved..
Both utes are good buys. Over here in NZ the Ranger is the top seller because the 2 wheel drive models are popular. The main issue with the ranger is that transmission issues are keeping the repair boy busy .
Good review, funny about the 10 speed getting confused, I have a 2021 wildtrak bi turbo 10 speed and it is not perfect but I do not experience the confusion comments, you need to drive extremely softly to use every gear it will jump from 1st to3rd to5th then sequentially after that, that is how it is tuned, never had an issue, accelerate vigorously and gear changes are different again. I test drove the 300LC 10speed and look it acted very very similarly. The new ranger in bi turbo refuses to skip gears unless you give it a real nudge. I hear a bit from the old school people Not old people, complain about the new tech including the 10 speed transmissions perhaps one day they will evolve
I have had nothing but perfection from my 2021 10 speed. City, country, laden, unladen and towing up to 2.9T. Towing over 7000km so far, on the flat and over what mountains we have in Australia.... mine happily skips a gear or 3 when appropriate. Very responsive to conditions and driver input.
Toyota has always had that reputation. I am a big fan of Toyota and still love it. However let's admit that Toyota is failing to keep up with newer rivals. I'm sure even the new dmax will still come on top of Toyota. Of course we will say let's wait for 2024 to see what Toyota brings but that's pointless because Ford will also have updated their utes by that time. Ford already has the platinum and wildtrak x knocking on the doors. Gradually Ford is taking over the market. That 2022 Toyota hilux was really overpriced. I wonder how much the new one will cost yet still beaten in tech.
I dont really think Toyota ever had made vehicles that are class leading, they have a great dealer network and the resale value basically selling their cars for them. The perceived reliability of the brand is also n big plus but to be fair I have never owned a Toyota so cant really comment on this. I think at best they a top 10 brand on value vs money spent as you dont get much spec and pay lots of money.

Battle lines? No. The Ranger is great.... but there are so many reported issues, Ford has been a complete dick about communicating and addressing. Ford Australia has over a WEEK lag time between submitting an online enquiry and receiving a response. A WEEK wait and ZERO phone support. Disgusting. Every Ford Dealership I visited (5 in total!) gave me terrible service and support and were frankly disinterested in helping me. Needless to say I cancelled my V6 Wildtrak order and purchased a Rogue. Best. Decision. Ever. Ford needs to get it's shit together. Oh and also.... it was pretty poor form to sell a "top of the range" Wildtrak to people who then waited 6 months only to have a higher model released while they waited, thereby devaluing their vehicle before they even received it. Fuck that.
The only reason Toyota retested for ANCAP in 2019 is because fleet requirements demanded only 5 star rated vehicles and Toyota would lose a heap of business.
I’ve been a Hilux driver for the past 15 years (2 of them) and I’m done. Extremely low power, always five years behind on the tech, and comfort levels aren’t impressive. Just ordered the new Ford Amarok which comes in a week, and I won’t be looking in the rear view mirrors. Great review. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@winnie1983 The main reason is timing. I ordered the Amarok 3 weeks ago and it comes in on Friday, compared to the ranger where I was told I would have to wait at least year. Also from the reviews that I’ve watched it sounds a bit more comfortable inside and personally I think the Amarok looks better.
@@javery161 Fair Enough…….timing is really important and looks are definitely subjective. Congratulations to you. In your first comment, you wrote Ford Amarok instead of VW Amarok,I believe that was on purpose due to new Amarok being sharing some DNA with Ranger.
So what this is basically saying is that if you were driving on the freeway in a straight line with minimal turns, this is the car for you. Any other situation is a? At this stage
Has anyone had issues with the new ranger? I have just ordered a wild track, it will take 12 months to deliver and I’m seeing all sorts of issues being listed on various reviews, are owners confident in the V6 ranger? Or are the issues isolated?
What issues? My only complaint is wind sounds sometimes in the highway. But only sometimes. I had my Wildtrak for about 5 months now. Love it! I never thought I would ever love having a diesel car or a pick up. My only experience was with a Hilux while working, and it was so horrible.
just to point out this is the new model Ranger vs the last year of the Hilux (now 8 years old). New Hilux model coming end of 2024. Hilux still holding its own against the newer models.
Here the price difference between those 2 specifically is close to 30%(Bulgaria, Eastern Europe). Individual orders will take in both cases 1 year realistically. The real choice between them will be decided by what is available in stock locally as well by the pricing. Spare parts and parts delivery speed is way better for Toyotas around here. Accessories are plentiful and available for the older vehicle. We have way more shops capable of working on Toyota, than Ford. I feel, that with those type of vehicles concerns such as these should be weighed as well. Ford has poor reputation for reliability and Toyota has exactly the opposite. The Ford is packed with features, which is really nice, but the engines and the reliability is yet to be tested. Previous gen Lion V6 is notorious in Land Rover for snapping the crank in 2. In my case, the price diff and availability made my decision easy -> Hilux. I would trade in a bit of tech for reliability every day. For me this is a daily driver/long range family vehicle and being without a car for weeks is not an option so the perceived reliability of the Hilux is reassuring.
@@paulmcintosh5589 and you can add to that a ridiculously huge amount of time spent in the repair shop..... and I'm not talking about the Toyota or the Hilux here. Ford so unreliable and overrated.

Although the hilux has an outdated power train it is tried & tested can’t say the same for ranger though it is interesting to see how the v6 will stand the test of time.
Turdota have been trying (and failing) to catch up with Ford since 2011. The new Ranger widens the gap again, so we can look forward to another decade of Turdota scrabbling. They must love Aussies for buying any old sh*t they put out. 😂
The only thing Ford is good at, is being at the repair shop. Rangers are overrated and only sell in Australia and New Zealand. EVERYONE buys the Hilux. Don't try talking big now
If you live in a capital city then the Ford is for you, the dealership is not far away. For everyone else who depends on the vehicle, Hilux is your choice. Never send a Ute to do a Hilux job 😁😁.
I've had the 22 Wildtrack and the 21 BT50, both had so many issues. Just bought a 2024 48V Rogue fingers crossed, but can only assume that all the things that the reviewers don't like ( ie oldschool ) should mean its not the pile of Sh#t the Wildtrack and BT were. The Hilux is still the cornerstone, that's why you're paying mid 70k for a ute with a 9 year old donk. Also the the Rangers don't look as good unless they are a Raptor as they are very square and miss the flared guards and exterior cladding that this shape was designed for.
These guys must be paid by Ford. Ford breaks down even after a few 1000 kms. Don't you guys get it. These unreliable issues with Ford should be in your review vs how more reliable Toyota is - get it. Ford is for mom taxis, and Toyota is for the real men
Ford Ranger is for aussie males who use their testosterone in making decisions when buying a ute. Toyota Hilux on the other hand, is for all other buyers who use their brain in making decisions.
You mean like when toyota was on a media test and dusted the MaF and went into limp mode easy fix apart from the dust going into the engine itself. Catch up fan boy
@paulmcintosh5589 - I had Fords and speak of experience. More in a workshop than driving. You really had to dig deep to find the few and far between Toyota problems I see. Yip, huge fan boy, for I no longer have to put up with Ford crap. By the way, my Isuzus gives me fantastic service. Cannot complain.
@paulmcintosh5589 suppose you stick what works for you then. At least limp mode gets you somewhere and Toyota sorting their problems working with clients, unlike no mode Fords leaving you stranded. Biased Ford reviewers does'nt help the cause either and must stop pulling wool over peoples eyes how fantastic Ford is not mentioning you stuck on your own if something goes wrong. Check John Cadogan's channel, which is by far a better and honest review, not these biased crap.
Oof. I will never drive a Toyota, for the same reason I will not drive a BMW. It's a personal thing. I love this Ranger. BUT I think there was a bit of bias going on here. It felt so at least.
Had and was, the rest has moved on in that department as well. The Toyota badge can no longer ride the limelight like it used to, after 1919. Of course the Hilux owners will wet themself, before actual acnolage that is no better than any other vehicle in this class.
@Fh Clappen still can't get passed the fact that the Hilux will still have a better resale value then the Ford. It's a Ford. The hilux has proven pedigree and people still want the Hilux.
Good luck at getting a Ranger at the advertised retail price , ford dealers been charging well above and wont budge. You'll pay over 90K for a Wildtrak, and get fords legendary rubbish after sale service.
With that weak 2.8 4cyl become stand across Toyota hilux and 70 series, Toyota have given up. 300 is a disappointment and SUV down grade on the well soughted and sold 200 4wd.
Built tough but not reliably, and all this tech(wonder why on a workhorse) will cost arm and leg in the long run. Ford used to like BIG IS BETTER (Same as Chev), then the moved Focus/focusing on Ford only and getting rid of all other non-FORD, and now they believe in FIRST IS BETTER, unfortunately they are pathetic to match Toyota reliability
The Ranger is light years ahead of the dated hilux, the way Toyota keep adding useless add ons to the old dinosaur is laughable, the ranger is just in another class compared to the hilux
Unfortunately, not in Australia. The petrol V6 HiLux was discontinued here in 2017 and when it bowed out was offered with a 175kW/376Nm state of tune, putting it still behind the 184kW/600Nm Ranger V6 diesel. - Kez
The 1HZ and 1HD were dropped from Australia quite a while ago. In late 2006 Toyota Aus phased out the six-cylinder line-up, and made a switch to the 1VD V8 exclusively from early 2007.
At this point Ranger has updated its interior. Hilux still has not. Wait until the All-new Hilux comes out then we will have a fair comparison. Previous Ranger models look as boring as the Hilux 😂
Dont agree with your review. Love the Hilux Fuel economy, has plenty of power and torque , more than enough for anything and smashes ford on economy. Also love Hilux infotainment system. Ranger infotainment too 😂
the test man is right ranger is better but its for a short time in about 4 years the ford ranger will have lost its value and that is when he will realize that toyota is a better tool
Oh Yeah, NO ONE likes the 1990 DEPRESSING GRAY or DEATH BLACK INTERIOR. Sorry but those interior colors have been standard for more than 1/2 my lifetime
Only time will tell for the Rangers if not it will be like all others FOREVER ,OVER, REPAIR , DEPARTMENT, AND THAT'S FORD FOR YOU THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USE TO ANYMORE but in all that the video was very interesting and informative to say the least I still love the HILUX just need to a little bit more refined in all aspects and it's good again and will take back the top spot 👍👍

Thanks for sharing, we are excited to see what Toyota have for the update.
The Ranger powertrain with the Hilux aesthetics would be perfect
hahaha, it's a no-contest. the Hilux is more reliable and won't let you down. the Ford...is a Ford. Resale value will also last a lot lot longer on the Toyota. Do the genuine Toyota bull bars fit the rogue with the wider guards? Does it leave a gap where they cut the flair away?
We were surprised in Thailand that we could not test drive I knew Toyota pickup. One of the two Ford dealerships in our area didn't even have a 4x4 to test drive. Isuzu vcross wasn't impressive on the test drive. The best we drove was the Ford wildtrak 4x4. 😊

There's a $7k difference, would the 2lt wildtrak be more comparative? I really think these guys should disclaim their influences.

Hilux if you want to keep it for at least 10 years trouble free
excellent organization in reviewing the vehicles
To Africans forget about the luxeries, toyota will remain a legend. Here ford is undoing itself with big engines and pricing.
For doing the big lap around Australia, I would definitely go for a Hilux. At least it’d guarantee a breakdown-free trip. I cant say the same for the Ranger
Competition means we all win. This Hilux would not have had upgrades like rear disc brakes without the Ranger.
Great point!
I have been towing 3t with a 4 cyl in various different vehicles and have ordered a V6 Ranger. Sick of the struggle in the small motors.
Mate I’m with you. Towed my 3T caravan with a Colorado…..got the Ranger V6 Sport last October….it’s fantastic 👍👍
Don't forget to fit an external transmission oil cooler when towing heavy
@@RocketRod63 My Colorado is remapped to 580nm of torque but it still struggles
@@kylebutler7142 I have one on my Colorado and will get one for the Ranger
I was amazed how under powered my Isuzu Dmax was towing a small 16" caravan. No way I would tow much more with it. My Santa Fe 2.2 diesel towed the caravan more effortlessly. I've got a Ranger Platinum on order ... Should fill the spot nicely until Hyundai finally release their ute with the straight 6 diesel.
The premium pack on the ranger is an aditional $1800 so it would be a far more measured approach to do a 4 cyl comparison.
I read somewhere the Hilux Rogue had a re-tuned 2.8lt with 165kw 550nm???

The perceived reliability of the brand is also n big plus but to be fair I have never owned a Toyota so cant really comment on this. it was pretty poor form to sell a "top of the range" Wildtrak to people who then waited 6 months only to have a higher model released while they waited, thereby devaluing their vehicle before they even received it.

The only reason Toyota retested for ANCAP in 2019 is because fleet requirements demanded only 5 star rated vehicles and Toyota would lose a heap of business.

i don't know about other countries, but SA does have a Toyota V6.
The 4.0-litre petrol V6 was previously available in this generation HiLux, but was withdrawn from sale in Australia in 2017 due to a lack of sales.
@@Drivecomau I would say lack of development of a petrol. Due to diesel blinded media fools.
