Volkswagen's all-new Amarok dual cab ute has entered the chat. We line the newcomer up against two category stalwarts to see how it compares.
As this was our first chance to look at the new Amarok in a competitive environment, and because we only had the car for a short period of time, we're conducting this comparison as a general-use on-road assessment.
We'll look at purchase and ownership value, load functionality, cabin accommodations and equipment, technology implementation and on-road driving performance. Towing and off-road assessment will come a bit later so that we can give both these key functions the attention they deserve.

I'm a Toyota guy but that hilux is a dinosaur, dual cabs with rear drums should be banned. We should get the new US Tacoma without the Toyota tax. I'd have the Ford VW over the ranger, which is just ugly, pity they used that 20 year old Ford V6 diesel instead of their own premium unit given what they charge.

Benchmark does not necessarily mean the best it is merely a point or reference things are measured against. The hilux due to its popularity, longevity and market dominance over the years, has become the benchmark against which rivals are measured. Ranger & Amarok both exceed the benchmark. Make sense?

To start, well done James on an awesome review. I watch so many reviews and you hear a little about the niggles, issues and so on but not often enough about the real life experience, you blitzed that issue with this review. It was long, but you sustained my interest and to be honest, I am looking at an EV for my next vehicle, but the presentation style held my interest. Okay being totally honest I am going through the mental gymnastics of a "end of life" or last vehicle investment, do I go old tech versus the planet's welfare? You didn't answer that question but to be fair, that wasn't your brief. Thanks for an excellent and very balanced review.

@@351tgv so they used a 20 year Ford TDV6 in a 12 year old platform instead 😂 This joint venture was never about producing a second gen Amarok. It was more of a cheap and slow exit from the commercial van and ute market by VW in exchange for a licence of EV tech to Ford.

    • @fullmetal11441

@@anthonyfarnan5935 I'd say they are filling the niche between Hilux and Raptor here in Europe quite nicely, as ford platinum is 20% more expensive and no one else is offering V6 and 4A. Wouldn't call it an exit, they spent around 3 years designing it. I'd say it's a reasonable distribution of resources in the times when all the car manufacturers here in EU are forced to balance their combustion and electric engine production. It's a good car with a low production cost, which saves them some CO2 emission permits 😀

You have swallowed the hype. It is the same engine. The same short crank with shared bearing lubrication drillings. The main difference is that the components are now machined and assembled in Mexico rather than the UK. The V8 was always sourced from Mexico as were the major components for UK assembly.
Best of luck with this design-flawed engine. The majority never fail. A very significant minority do, despite many false promises of solutions over many years of production. Nothing will alter the fundamentals except a total redesign and that is not going to happen, probably ever, because all development money is going towards alternative fuel engines/motors and batteries.

Wow $149 tail gate assist, getting excited over very little. We have the sr5 HiLux's at work and they are very cramped especially in the rear, and reliable, it is not the same as the old pre 2000 year, also the ride is not a patch on the other utes, then there are the many issues that the Hilux has which are not publicized, God forbid you upset Toyota by calling out an issue. I am not saying the Hilux is a piece of junk but it is nothing like the advertising and is very much overpriced for what you get. The current offerings from nearly all manufacturers are pretty damned reliable and there is no clear leader.

Thanks James but quoting Ford Ranger as car of the year is laughable - we all know that the bogan Ford brand is unreliable yes I know Ford pays big money for all you journos to praise it but wouldn’t it be nice if you could be honest - yes the Hilux needs to some improvements like sprung rear tailgate, rear disc brakes and ride but I’ve owned two Hilux’s now and wouldn’t own anything else - the Amarok with left side turn indicator and sharing the Ford drivetrain are deal-breakers for me - I hope Isuzu have fixed the well known tearing/cracking of the wheel well in the engine bay which would be expensive to fix if out of warranty - look forward to maybe some honest reviews of the new Nissan/Triton cousins.
