Thanks for the great feedback everybody! I mentioned in another comment that once the Amarok launches, we'll re-run these tests with the 70 Series (wasn't available for this test), the LDV T60 Max, Mahindra Pik-Up, Amarok, regular Navara and Ranger bi-turbo.
On the award places - the Jeep was outright winner for obvious reasons. Raptor got best value on the basis that it has all of the off-road equipment you need to go off-road without modifying the vehicle - to get anywhere near this level of equipment you'd need to buy the Jeep, which already took out the main prize, or modify one of the other utes, which would void warranty.
And in the four-cylinder category, it was a very close placement between Navara and Triton. Ultimately it went to the Navara because it comes out of the factory with the added off-road gear that won't void the warranty.
On tyres - as we said in the test, we wanted to test these straight out of the factory. By fitting all terrain tyres to each vehicle, we no longer have a vehicle that is as you can buy off the dealer floor. These are very light off-road tests that any dual-cab ute and any driver should be able to do without needing all-terrain tyres.

Ignoring the who won bit at the end, it was a really enjoyable and revealing video. Thanks for going to so much effort with this one Paul. Personally I think the Navara did well with the big tires and flexible suspension. This was obvious when you almost stopped with the gear change and regained momentum half way up the slope. So on outright capability out of the showroom the Navara was likely the best 4 cylinder as presented. However the Triton is a mountain goat, and with tires and suspension and a front locker it would still be way cheaper than the Navara and make the Rubicon look portly. That is offroad value for money.

Still makes no sense. Why even bother doing these tests if you are just going to judge on equipment levels? Neither the Navara or the Raptor looked in the game and should have been placed in the middle of the pack based on the tests conducted.

Jeeps in general? Absolutely. Rubicons? Not so much. Brand loyalties aside, those things are pretty well engineered and the newer pentastar v6 petrols are bulletproof. Ask Americans. I'd also say I've never really heard much complaint out of the RAM crowd. Very common motor being the 5.7 hemi, long lasting as most of those full size pickups are and not expensive to maintain apart from fuel. The Chevy on the other hand if it's the duramax diesel, they can have their dramas as evidenced by Brunswick diesels in Perth putting them in landcruisers. They don't last forever and tend to corrode. Americans don't poor the kind of R&D into diesels we do is Aus though. The yank petrol cars here though I think there's a fair body of evidence to say they are pretty darn good.

If you're looking at it pure offroad wise then the Triton punches high in its class. If you're looking at other areas such as towing, load baring, mods etc it falls off bad. Doesn't tow well or carry weight well cause of how the axle is slung inwards. In terms of mods you can't lift them without replacing the whole front suspension system cause it is stopped by the bump stops and control arms from going any higher. Even 4wd 24/7 says that it's the best in stock form not in any other form. If he was going off those stats then the Triton in value for money is not the best

As a Ranger owner and fan, I am shocked that the raptor got best value for money, to me it's a poser and very expensive one at that when your so called "standard" ranger really did out perform it with less equipment.
Best value should have been the triton for sure. Low cost did everything that was asked of it and did it well and bet the tyres on the Triton wernt as good as those on the raptor aswell.
I'm not sold on the auto dif lock in the raptor actually works as well as the manual dif lock in the standard form either and I'd be interested to know if it is at all the same system.
As we know any diff lock affects steering front more so yes, even still simple physics tells us to corner the inside tyer spins less than the outside so having a full auto lock in low range seems like a terrible idea aswell as you don't always need a dif lock in low range.
Raptor may have the gadgets and gizmo's but has reduced pay load and towing capacity aswell which is not taken into consideration here either. Yeah after watching this im glad I didn't get a raptor.

I think the Silverado and Ram deserve the most praise due to the fact those trucks were not built to really off-road like the other half ton trucks in this competition. Now you take the ZR2 silverado or the Ram trx and that's a different story. Also think the gladiator and ranger are very capable from the factory but they are most certainly not the most cost efficient off-road vehicles. Another point the Gladiator has an advantage over all the other vehicles having a straight axle in the front and back and coil overs.

One thing I have noticed is that on the gwm cannon which isn't widely publicised is that you can press and hold the traction control button until it comes up on the dash expert cross country mode which turn Awd into 4 wd by locking the centre diff and sending power 50/50 front and rear like a normal 4wd and can only be used off road only on unpaced surfaces.

And also I think from memory the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel can alter the hill descent control speed also. Does on my gwm cannon anyway.

Great job on testing out the different brands out in the market. Helps the prospective buyers choose their 4x4 for offroad on variable terrains. Just noticed on my observation on this video that, probably if those units that failed had an offroad rubber as the Raptor or Gladiator, "maybe" the result may alter. Anyway it's just my thought. But great job in general. Kudos to you and your staff for this highlighted video on 4x4 performances.👏👍♥️ Take care and God bless.

Great test and as a Triton fan I didnt expect anything less from it. The GWM and Musso seem slightly out of their depth here and the BT50/Isuzu really shocked me as they struggled with the hill climb.

@@SirBigzalot I'm not actually so sure, maybe the Triton wheelbase or track width had something to do with it but I cant see any of the top 5 selling vehicles having issues getting up. The Hilux also seemed totally fine going thru and surprisingly the Navara took more effort especially when the gearing intervened.

    • @LostPunk5545

The Cannon is actually quite good off road if you know how to engage H4 which the manufacturer admittedly has hidden with scant mention in the manual (you have to hold down the traction control button), and if you don't expect to get up a loose gravel hill in the road tyres it comes with without dropping the PSI by 10-15. I've had the same issues in a Hilux at work not being able to drive up a steep grassy hill with crappy road tyres on it.
When you pay $46k for the upper model Cannon, which is an extremely comfortable car with lots of nice tech, you've got over $40k to play with for off-road mods compared to the outrageous price of some of these cars. Guarantee with $1500 of AT tyres it would easily have made it up that gravel hill for over $40k less than his beloved Raptor.
Also the roller test of the traction control is pretty stupid. Who uses traction control off-road? It's an on-road feature. He could have turned it off in the Cannon with the press of a button and not had any issues, and if he had have held it down for a bit longer it would have been in X Country Expert Mode (i.e. H4) which would have been an actual comparable test to the other utes, rather than trying to drive a slippery surface in the on-road designed AWD mode and then bagging it out for not performing off-road.

@@henkstols9326 yeh not too sure. Same as you surprised at the dmax. I looked at all the reviews before I bought the musso. Reliability was number one important aspect for me than cost. A lot of rave reviews by owners of Musso. I’m yet to add the mods but those who have go everywhere the others do with no issue. Just needs ground clearance and all terrains. Also the factory tyre pressure is set at 42 when it should really be at 36.

@@SirBigzalot I think at the end of the day we all buy vehicles that suite our needs, most folks wont even go as far offroad as in this video and thats including the Raptor owners. To me it was very disappointing that the Isuzu and BT50 struggled and its TC system was poor, both of these should at least compete with the Triton,Navara and Hilux as they have been around forever.

That musso could have easily made it up that hill. Never seen a driver use a stop and go method when climbing a hill. Again stop and go with the GWM. The Toyota and v6 Ranger were given the extra throttle to make it up. At least that's what it looked like. Would love to see this test with the same tires on all of them.

I’d get some more experience off-roading before judging cars on the “off-roading ability”
You can’t expect a car on small hwy tyres to do the same thing on the bigger lifted cars with A/T or M/T tyres, And it also doesn’t help that you’re idling up the hill. You need momentum if you want to get up a hill of that gradient with ruts like that.

I'm assuming he was probably given it by Ford as well and didn't have to pay a cent. Surprising it keeps coming out near the top of all these tests... despite the fact that any of the cheaper cars would probably do better for cheaper if the extra money you pay for a Raptor was put towards modifications. If you pay a significant portion of the cost of a house just to buy a car to go off-road you're a chump.

Locking the rear differential usually gets the vehicle out of most predicaments.
