- I have been asked countless times, why I bought a Toyota Hilux and not a Ford Ranger in 2023. In this video, I will breakdown every reason why I purchased this over a Ranger by using my Hilux Rogue as a comparison.

Hi Mark I’m 64 years old I he’d many different cars in my life, but the last four cars were all Toyotas. I had no problems The last one was 2012, Landcruiser 200 a purchased for $74,000 and sold it in 2021 for $82,000 that tells you the difference between other brands of cars that keep the value. I purchased a 2022 Rogue in June last year and super impressed with it. Drivers well, great economy and very easy to handle. Interestingly I test drove the new Ranger 2 months ago and honestly didn't like it, the brakes were terrible and way too much going on in the cockpit. Resale for me was a huge factor in the Hilux

Meaning to say we owned the Rogue for 6month & mileage around 10000km. I also purchased it in June last year. So far I am satisfied with Rogue performance in term of fuel economy & comfortably driving.

Hey man, good "review" so to speak. As a new gen raptor owner here, I can speak from some experience. The infotainment system is actually very intuitive and easy to use. You can control most things via physical button and knobs below the screen itself, as well as buttons on the steering wheel. The orientation and brightness of the screen is actually great, and at night time it changes to dark mode so you don't get blinded by the darn thing haha!
living in regional WA, as you can imagine it is toyota central haha! As you said the ranger's diesel v6 as well as the raptor's petrol TT v6 are both tried and tested. The diesel v6 originating from the old territory and the petrol being in many ford cars and utes in the US. I love my raptor and I guess time will tell in terms of reliabilty etc etc, especially after jumping it numerous times lol and sending it through a dessert race track where I live. There's always going to be a ranger vs hilux discussion and it just comes down to preference in the end.

It’s all to do with preference and I will be driving a ranger soon to see how big of an issue some of the things I mentioned in this video are. Like you said, things like lack of buttons are only observations and until I live with it I won’t know how convenient or inconvenient it is. For me, having more access to parts when going bush is a big factor so the Toyota makes sense. If I was staying close to roads with access to tow trucks or with access to dealerships I would go with the raptor. But unfortunately, the travel that I do and will be doing means I have to go with Toyota until I’m sure the fords can take the beating of the Aussie bush. You're right about access to spares etc etc when touring remote areas. You can get Toyota parts almost anywhere. Ford is getting better I think, although will never be up to Toyota numbers lol.

Your personal choice also depends on application and driving habits. Toyota are the vehicle of choice in remote WA (where I lived and worked for many years) simply because they were the more reliable and the longer lasting when driven daily predominantly off highway, and have always had the best resale value. The fords, nissans, mitsis, isuzus are all very good vehicles, but with 95% off tarmac use they rattled themselves into "trade in time" after around 50k kms. The crusiers and hiluxes were still going strong in those conditions at 300k. Horses for courses as they say.
The petrol TT V6 Ecoboost is not tried and tested in the US, it is tried, tested, and failed :)
Living in North America, the ecoboost TT V6 (the the turbo 4's as well) is a 150-200 thousand km engine, that's it. There's a reason why in NA Ford still sells its trucks with V8s, and its F250/350 with big diesels. The Ecoboost range was developed for only two reasons, out of the box EPA ratings and cost-cutting.

Nice work. What makes a good car for a person comes down to what that person values the most. High end tech is not everyone’s most valued selection criteria. I have been driving Toyota’s for 40 years everyone of them has served me well. Reliability, resale and fit for purpose ;)
Well said. Some people swear by their Fords just like I swear by my Toyotas. At the end of the day, you won't see many Rangers or Raptors where I go camping and that's for the same reasons mentioned in this video. 40 Years of Toyota ownership is incredible! Toyota should give you a free truck for that level of commitment haha

Thanks good review, re fuel economy, I got 11.5 lt per 100km from my 80 series 4.2 diesel Landcruiser. Measured by fill to fill method, this was very consistent and over many tens of thousands of Km’ s. Full blown off-road, some of Australia’s worst tracks and pulling a fully loaded off road trailer it managed by the full to full method, 15lt per 100km’s. It’s now travelled 380,000km and still strong. I’ve never managed to get the low kilometre economy when she was young but around town now it’s still around 12.5. I know this may be deemed heavy but for a big vehicle and loaded I was happy. Very consistent economy

Great review mate. The I got the rugged x in red and love it. I say I’ll always stick with the hilux but holy the raptor is on another level. Up close they’re a tank. See how i go on my next car choice one day.

Hey mate thanks so much for your comparison video. I made the same decision as you for similar reasons. But unlike you this is my first Toyota and also my first 4X4. I think it boils down to Toyota being the safe option. The quality is proven, the parts are everywhere, the vehicle is very capable and I have peace of mind 😌 and my driving experience is going to be 1000% more satisfying as a result.

Currently waiting for a 2023 Toyota Hilux SR 4x4 extra cab manual and I chose it over the equivalent Ford Ranger XL because the support is better since I am in regional QLD and reliability and resale was a great upside. The Hilux is more simple to use and I don’t need all of the features.

Both are solid vehicles. Basically comes down to personal taste. You made a choice that you're obviously happy with. Well done. Glad you had a good experience too with your local Toyota dealer. Sadly I've yet to find one near me that isn't arrogant.
I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, the experiences we have with our dealerships really do influence the vehicles we buy. I won't call anyone out, but after dealing with a couple of dealerships in Cairns, there is a reason why I buy from Atherton haha
Love your enthusiasm young fella. I went very close to buying my first Ford with the Ranger but fortunately I secured one of the first "new"Rogues, zero regrets. Drive yours back to back with an SR or an SR5 to get a real appreciation for how good the changes are. Watch the Ford fan boys come out of the woodwork here now....

I have had the next gen wildtrak since august now, practical wagon. Wireless charging, wireless carplay great. Ince everything is set you never even touch that big screen

My question is, how is the driving height compared to the Prado? Do you feel like you are sitting just as high on the road as the Prado or do you feel slightly smaller
Great question. Due to the chassis layout, the seating position is higher in the cabin. With the extra width of the wheels and fenders, it is a bigger truck for sure. Hard to park in the supermarket but that’s not what this is for 👍 I’ll be doing a comparison video with the Prado, fortuner and hilux we own here and I’ll measure them up. But the hilux honestly feels like a tank on the road. It’s awesome
Hey man, dunno if it was this video or not. You mentioned no more beeping when opening your car door. My 2021 sr5 doesn’t beep, (if off) however, if the accessories are on, it beeps. Does yours beep if the accessories are on if you open your drivers door?
Mine doesn’t beep if the passenger door opens, when accessories are on
Hi mate. Mine beeps with accessories on and door open but if it’s on “ignition on” mode, no beep. And if the car is on, no beep. Unlike rangers and other utes that beep constantly whenever the car is on and a door is open
That's a great review and I agree with you. I'll start off by saying a new Hilux or Ranger are good vehicles, but I'm waiting to see which one is a better vehicle at 200,000km. I have an electrical contracting business in Townsville and I have several utes . 2006 Hilux, 2006 BT50, 2010 Ranger, 2010 Ranger 4x4, 2013 Colorado, 2020 Triton 4x4 and the vehicles with all the problems are the two rangers. I would never buy another second hand Ranger.
Spot on Derek! You are in the fortunate position to see all models as second hand vehicles and under working conditions. The hilux really is unbreakable and there’s a reason 2008 Hilux’s still sell for a huge amount. I’ll keep you updated with the reliability but so far, it’s excellent
Good comparison and agree with you on all the points. I recently rented a Ranger WT for 2 weeks. Did about 2000km in it and even some very light offroad. The ute drives like a car and can agree that tub step is really nice. The Ford has a lot of nice features but after about 3 days a lot of things started to bother me. Constant beeps when you turn it of, the headrest pushing my head uncomfortably forward, and for some reason the interior looks big but felt small. It did not feel like I can actually see out of the ute and I am 6ft4. The electronics are also something I would not trust in the bush. Great ute if you are looking for a car. The Toyota is just the better choice for those looking to have adventures in the dirt.
That’s good to know that you had that experience with it. That will help a lot of people. I’m afraid the electronics in the conditions that I (and you) put the trucks through won’t handle it long term. Like you said, the better choice for people like you and me is the hilux 👍

Great video only question with the rouge is it comes with a two inch lift but no gvm upgrade to me that does not make sense happy for your thoughts - I have a sr5 2021 with lift and gvm upgrade and I love it.
True. I guess you could always upgrade the gvm. Personally, I’ll be within the gvm so for most people it’ll be fine
Hi mate what are your thoughts on the lower clearance point where the rear shock is mounted to the rear axle?
Hey mate. Great question. In my opinion, not a problem. The shock sits so close to the wheel that you shouldn’t run into any clearance issues. You’ll hit the diff before you hit the shock
Cool review man. have you looked into what size tyres you can get with the standard suspension, if so what size.

Awesome review, you mention lift on the rogue, Toyota says its 20mm over SR5, what is the actual lift? can you fit 33s without any additional lift or suspension modifications? thanks mate.

I totally agree, I also purchased a 2023 Rogue my 3rd new Toyota, I previously back in the day bought a Ford Explorer new for 42k after 4years sold for 10k so you hit the nail on the head for resale and reliability Toyota!

Good fair comparison mate, Ive got to see a lot more of Toyota’s competitors on cattle stations before I’d consider any of them. Bushproofed reliability is number one for me along with simple functionality that goes hand in hand, and now you have excellent resale..Other brands can really only compare with Toyota not compete….
100% I need a vehicle that will work in the harshest environments and at this point I just don’t trust Ford and other companies

@@NorthOz sorry north oz, the edit and delete functions aren’t functioning. I’m zigzagging across the top end, humidity alone tests out a vehicle. I don’t need to touch and feel a vehicle to see if it’s any good, I look at what’s on the road deep in the bush… A 2022 daul cab comparison was done by a popular 4wd show that saw the ranger win, BUT none of them would buy one, too expensive, modifying a nightmare due to constant sensor resetting, and they would be very nervous taking it bush due to bush proof considerations.. I still don’t know why it won..

Personal preference I suppose. I don’t like the big screens because I never use it anyway. It’s not like I can look at it when I drive anyway

We're talking about a ute a car that is supposed to be used and abused.
Then all this technology remember doesn't last many years where some country have 35 degrees 300 days a year all those computers and big screens getting cooked.
Better old school stuff.
I personally like still manual windows and old style ignition systems because I know they never brake.
Toyota will last ten years longer than a poxy Ford. FACTS!!

Great informative review on the Hilux. I’ve had my SR5 2009 model since new and still have. Naturally I’ve fitted all the extras to it over the years and it’s still going strong after 180,000 KLMs. But looking for a change and very impressed with the Rogue as a friend has just purchased one. What sort of off road tyres are you looking at fitting, and will you be fitting a bar, lights etc.

Hi mate, in terms of off-road performance the hilux was good. In hindsight the plastic over fenders are a weak point (especially the clips) so keep that in mind if you are doing some tough wheeling. I would be looking at a similar size AT. I hear good things about the wild peaks but the toyos and dunlops are are a safe bet. I have been impressed with Dunlop and would go to a more aggressive at from them 👍

Your 2.8-litre Toyota Hilux Rogue in Australia looks like our Hilux Conquest here in Philippines, though you have some wider arches and extended wheels on the sides…. In the market here, we both got the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV (204 metric-hp, 500 Nm torque) and 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV (150 metric-hp, 400 Nm torque) mated onto the Hilux Conquest in auto-transmission trim and manual-transmission trim.
Mine is the 2.4-litre 4x2 Hilux Conquest in manual-transmission trim. I also got a 2.8-litre Fortuner LTD 4x4, by the way, which comes in auto-transmission. In the 1GD-FTV mated Fortuner LTD, I only get about 10.8 km per litre after almost 40,000 km now on the odometer. In comparison to your Hilux Rogue 4x4, you mention that you’re getting 9 litres per 100 km so far, which is about 11.11 km per litre.
Now on the 2GD-FTV mated Hilux Conquest in manual-transmission trim, I’m getting an unbelievable 14.1 km per litre or about 7.1 litres per 100 km in terms of fuel efficiency as you can see after almost drinking it near 10,000 km now…. My driving is mixed extra urban (city traffic), rural, extra rural, freeways and mountainous areas on both my Hilux and Fortuner LTD

You might get the Fortuner GR-S version there which has a classier pearl white colour than our Fortuner LTD as we got both models here but the same headlights and most equipment except for the brake calipers and better and neater front and rear plastic or carbon fibre panels in favour of the Fortuner GR-S 4x4
hi i am waiting to pick up the 2023 red rough next month and i need an extra battery in the engine bay toyota can't help me and arb can't do it has they have not seen the new rough yet. why can't toyota supply this as they do for the sr5 thanks ralph
Hi mate. I did mine through my dealership. Arb have the kits for them. The kits fit the rogue and the SR5. They are the same car electrical wise. Sounds like they are fobbing you off

Hey nice walk around and point of view. I've owned heaps of hilux's and my last was almost the same as the rogue. But the turbo charger had issues at 10k and the dealer did not replace free...they part shared the cost. Then i saw the release of the Ford next gen in Thailand and was impressed at all levels. Got delievery of my Raptor with the twin turbo V6 petrol in November, and it's one of the best cars I've owned. Every drive has me smiling! To be fair, the Rogue is way cheaper, but it is a 7 year old design, so for sure, your comments about parts and accessories likely hold true, but please everyone demonstrate the Ranger first.
Thank you for your comment. However, I wouldn’t take a raptor out bush where I go. If I stayed close to cities, I would. But being 3 hours sometimes even 20 hours (round trip) from towns means I can’t risk it with a Ford at the moment. Hopefully part availability improves and then I will consider one 👍
i currently have the new version Hilux and have ordered the new Raptor. but i love the reliability of Toyota and am a bit worried about the Ford reliability.
I been told to stay away from the Raptor if you plan to tow a decent sized caravan.
The aircon controls on the ranger aren't on the screen, they're physical buttons just below the screen.
Good point. But multimedia functions and other functions are accessible only through using the touch screen or steering wheel controls.
I completely hate this "all digital" trend these days. Love the old school analogue dials with a "tech" screen between them

Hey Mate good review and you are entitled to have personal preference but just wanted to tell you that i think you are 100% wrong on almost all your points, As a Hilux owner myself for the last 10 yrs i have had 2 hilux's, 1 SR and a SR5.. one xtra cab and one dual cab and i bought my hilux for most of the reasons you mentioned , reliability , many dealerships across the country, resale value , etc ,etc . However.. after driving them for the last 10 yrs and all over the country too , i have come to the conclusion that they are basically just a very underwhelming and underperforming vehicle with just decent reliability, Allow me to explain why.. The engines have always been underpowered, The brakes are very average at best especially the rear brakes, the handling is average at best , off road capability is ok , just ok, nothing remarkable lets be honest here and , interior features are almost non existent , especially in earlier models, over the last 10yrs there have been many non 4x4 cars released that are feature packed inside and out for literally half the price of a hilux, how are other manufacturers able to slap so many features on a car for literally half the money? The truth of the matter is Toyota, especially in the 4x4 space are taking the Aussie consumer for granted and also taking them for a ride, they have not innovated anything in this space for almost 20 yrs,, They never ever offer anything new to the consumer unless they are forced to by competitors .. Infact, that Rouge you own , the only reason that car exists at all is because Toyota have been getting smashed by competing brands mainly Ranger and they are forced to put something more attractive on the market , otherwise that car would still have rear drum brakes and a 120kw engine and Toyota would still want 70k for a vehicle that is not worth a cent over 40k.. the hide of em.. and that is the main reason i am really keen to get out of Toyota for my next purchase because Toyota's attitude towards its consumers. I don't want to be stuck with a brand that is only ever going to be coming from behind with new features that other brands have already had for 5 yrs or more.. Almost every feature you mentioned "except for the cameras" on your Rouge already existed in my wife's 2008 Volkswagon Tiguan , a great little car with a full time 4x4 drivetrain and 6 speed auto , great handling and rear disc brakes with a hydraulic push button hand brake that was better than anything Toyota have ever produced in a hilux.. and that was back in 2008, So when you mentioned that Hilux have now got rear disc brakes, i almost pissed myself laughing, Its a total Disgrace they should have had disc brakes on em 10 yrs ago and to charge over 70k and 90k for a Raptor ?? WTF ? to put it into perspective a bran new Ford F150 Lightning full electric 4x4 truck in the US is $42k usd so about $65k Aud for a full size truck of course we will never get it for $65k , we will have to pay over $120k for a truck like that.. its a total joke. Ranger is also catching up on hilux's resale value bigtime as people are realising the value a 5 yr old ranger has compared to the same yr model hilux especially with their 3.2 litre turbo diesel plant that outpowers the hilux.. I'm not sold on either yet tho.. and i'm not yet saying never to another hilux As despite the fact that Ranger Raptor knocks hilux out of the park on features, power and off road capability Ford still have the same problem as Toyota when it comes to price, they take the piss out of the consumer, they assume that everyone that is going to be buying these utes is going to be a tradie earning 200k per year its just scandallus.. Anyway mate hope that offers you a different perspective hope you enjoy your new ute and i hope those disc brakes work well..

But in my opinion, right now, this is the best vehicle on the market without stepping up into RAM money. I’m hoping Toyota will start bringing more features into their vehicles in the new updates coming but only time will tell

Hello just found your channel. love your view on Toyotas i have had 3 hiluxs and BJ40 for many years. I was in the market for a new vehicle a couple of weeks ago took an MU-X for a test drive. It was okay just couldn't make myself go past a Toyota. Good call mate. With my trips going remote I’d highly recommend the hilux. The rogue is good but I think the sr5 is the sweet spot given current rogue prices
I didn’t know whether to buy a Ford or a Toyota. I asked a mechanic who used to work for Ford’s. Hey said he would buy a Toyota all day long and they pointed out. The engines are built much better by Toyota and in the Ford vehicles After a few years, there will be a problem at the back part of the engine and he went into great detail, I’ve got myself a Toyota Hilux and I’ve never regretted it. I’m looking at getting a new one soon 🙂

All very good reasons but they come at the cost of less power and tech and basically being 5 years behind.

You are right there. The Ford has some small controls under the tablet but they aren’t very accessible when driving. There are some other factors like part availability etc. but if you don’t go bush and don’t travel far outside of towns, then buy a ranger 👍
@@NorthOz I think that they are accessible while driving, moreover you can control the climate control over the voice commands - something that Toyota is bringing in their new 2023 new models.
Some tech that you avoid mentioning that Toyota does not have but are available in Ranger (and are very good safety options to have while "travelling far outside the town"): active lane keep, cruise control with speed detection, and matrix LED. My wife drives her raptor every day to work and on the weekends nearly 300km round trip to our farm. She loves the systems that keep her in the line, follows the various speed limits on the way and automatically dim the headlights for oncoming traffic while illuminating the rest of the road. They are not just for her safety but safety of others on the road. Automatic parking assistance, remote start (to warm up or cool down your interior) and automatic 4wd mode for the slippery road are handy features for an everyday drive. For anyone who tows a trailer or caravan, the blindspot assists that accounts for the trailer length is another great safety technology.
So it's not just the tech specs that look good on paper, they can save your life one day and make your everyday drive much more enjoyable and safe - something that cannot be compensated by some extra dollars on resale value.
I actually had a prado. Never skipped a beat. Had around 400'000 klm when I sold it and the new owner took it straight to the Cape no worries.the last 5 years I had a 2015 Sr5. Again super reliable.
I'm now waiting for my everest to arrive. Ford dealers and Ford Australia are terrible but just for once I wanted to feel like I'm getting value for money not just worrying about the next owner who will benefit the most with reliability when klms go above 100K.
If the new fortuner steps it up in a few years I might be back....

Speak to 10 decent mechanics and at least 7 will choose Hilux over the Ranger. The reliability is fact, not perceived
I have a funny issue when looking at different brands of ute. I have a logo for my business that sits in the middle of the door. Rangers and Dmaxs have a crease in the door panels that is going to distort my logo. Hiluxes and Navaras have nice flat panels on the doors.
It's probably been mentioned... but the GCM comparison is significant for those interested in towing. Ranger's GCM is approx 9.5% greater: Hilux 5850kg vs Ranger 6400kg. GVM is a similar story: Hilux 3050kg vs Ranger 3350kg.

I have paddle shifters in my Fortuner, and while I at first thought they were a gimmick, I have found them one of the most useful features in the vehicle, especially for offroad and for towing. Honestly, it was a revelation to have total control over gear selection without taking my hands from the steering wheel.
In fact, I would probably make the decision on my next vehicle based on the option of having flappy paddles.

Have to agree, I bought a Prado Kakadu and thought the paddles were definitely not an option box I would tick if I was paying extra for them. However since I have had them I find myself using them a lot, especially off-road when you want to quickly drop a gear through a knarley section.
I believe it's a matter of preference. If you own the Ranger/everest, sooner or later you get used to the infotainment system. Otherwise, that's a beautiful truck you got, it will serve you well for a very long time.

Hi Sanny! I think people just put up with whatever they get so at the end of the day it won’t affect most people. Travelling in the conditions I do, I need less tech and more reliability. That’s what the Toyota offers me. Nokia still make phones, they just aren’t iPhones haha

I think it has both potentially. But not all features are analogue and the hilux has more analogue than the ranger

Not all functions are available as knobs and buttons. Some are embedded within the infotainment
Reliability is premium in any vehicle , thats probably why I’m on my 5th hilux , in 1999 pre hilux days I had a 2nd hand hiace that carried plumbing tools for the next 5 years and to this day remains my favourite work vehicle, unbreakable and unstoppable it never let me down, purchased with 80,000 on the clock it smashed out another 360,000 during its time with me, when I sold it in 2004-5 it was still in great shape mechanically, after that I refused to consider any other manufacturer other than Toyota .
My current hilux has 90,000 on the clock and hasn’t missed a beat , it’s not the quickest or the most comfortable ute on the market, it’s tech is a little behind and its looks need a bit of refining, but it gets me where I need to go and home everyday .

One glaring thing about the Hilux is that Top Gear tried several times to destroy the vehicle from drowning it to putting on top of a tower block just before the blow down and on all occasions it survived amazingly. That is the main reason that I want one, as they are, practically, indestructible.

Sure. You can’t predict the future. Everyone talked about electric cars taking over years ago and we are no closer to it. Same with hydrogen powered cars. If anything, when the next gen comes out, these will sky rocket in price. It happened with the 200 and 79 series LC’s
I dunno what you mean about some of these things, it's as if you haven't really seen a ranger. There's analogue knobs for every aspect of control, sound, air con, heater, lights, trailer braking, the list goes on. The only things you access by the touch screen are, well, nothing really besides the cars manual if you need it. Your phone/ voice commands control the music, navigation etc. I never touch my screen in my ranger, there's no need to.
Interesting. From all of the reviews they said otherwise so I wonder why they said this? Why even have a touch screen that big if you don’t even use it? Adds to my growing list of questionable technology choices Ford made on the Ranger. There’s no right or wrong and I’m glad you like your truck 👍

It depends. I think for most people the raptor will be a better truck. But for people who go remote and are buying vehicles to last 15+ years, I’d go hilux everytime

Ford have certainly considered user feedback and integrated some goodies into the Ranger (e.g. higher specs, the big iPad screen tech interface, the wide -pallet fitting ute well, etc) but the same uncertainties reign such as “reliability, longevity; and service support.” I think Toyota still count on good faith for reliability, etc - but at the end of the day I would want to know after outlaying $70K+ for a ute, that it will go the distance and last past 80,000km (with no risk of prospective gearbox issues, and digital electric tech fails, etc). Such a shame though, that utes are so overpriced… for what they are. The economics of “demand” in Aus, I guess.

Spot on there. At the end of the day toyota knows that if they make a great product people will continue to buy it and the hilux is unbreakable. I know the rogue will last past 400,000 kms because it’s the same running gear as the last 5 years of truck. But the same can’t be said about the fords. I’m sure fords are reliable, but speak to people who have had both an older Ford and an older toyota and they will say they prefer toyota every time 👍
@@NorthOz well I mean if we include falcon utes that’s not the story, the falcon ute is like a better Hilux workmate with more power and cheaper on fuel (uses more but costs way less as a petrol) our Au ute which employees now use is still running strong at 420,000 kms

Thanks Mark and you’ve got the best model and a Hilux always looks good in Red - I’ve owned many Subarus for their AWD abilities and more importantly their reliability and service culture - I now own a 2010 Hilux Diesel Auto and I’ve been as impressed with it’s abilities, build, reliability and good service culture and Toyota now has a 20 percent stake in Subaru - the Ranger may be good on road and paper and comfortable but Ford’s poor long term reliability has been one of its thorns which has been a deal-breaker for me - love the Rogue guard cladding for body protection - hated the Triton turbo lag but even my 2010 Hilux has no turbo lag as the power is always there - well done and enjoy - 13 out of 10

Good video. I just bought a 2023 Hilux in Cambodia. But it’s not called Rogue here. It’s called Rally. The big screen like the Wildtrak is also needed. Why people still need manual gear 😂. Traffic in a Phnom Penh is a nightmare. I can’t afford to keep pumping the clutch 😂

Same here. When you say “can’t use 4H on the road”, what do you mean by that? Are you talking about that 4H isn’t selected all the time? You can drive the hilux on the road in 4H, in fact it’s recommended on wet roads. Thanks mate, the hilux is a great Ute!

@@samhassall1926 Only when the 4H system will be of benefit is when it should be engaged. Otherwise, 2H is fine most of the time. You can also use 4H in snow, sleet etc.
@@samhassall1926 I needed the flexibility of the tray for projects. Carrying gardening supplies and timber in a Prado is not ideal with all the places it can scratch. Now I can chuck it in the back and not have to worry.
I had a 2005 Toyoya Tacoma; bought it brand new at 25.3K USD. After 9 years and 11 months, sold it to a used car dealer here in California. The salesman suggested I better sit down as he handed me the check. My eyes almost blew out of their sockets when I read the figure - almost 18k!

When you mention the high levels of Tech in the Ranger over a Hilux that can break down, I'll agree with you there but basic features that are lacking in comparison . Like adjustable lumbar support in the drivers seat, a torsion spring in the tailgate for assistance. These items are just examples of how it lags behind in features that matter. And aren't a reliability concern ! I hope the new release Hilux can be on the front foot like the new Prado that is entering Market that looks good.
I’m not excusing the hilux for not having those (they should). I’d hope the hilux has them going forward. They aren’t expensive and won’t hurt reliability by any means. Completely agree mate 👍
Not a hilux user but drives a fortuner. My experience is that after 3 years driving it the main problem is with the alignment. Man every 400km journey I need to take it to the workshop to get the car aligned. Plus 6/7 of my friends who owned a hilux said they need to align their hilux almost every week. Yes I understand that resell value is good and you used to drive the prado but the thing is that the material quality of both oh these vehicles are very different I myself still own the prado 120 and the prado till now 17 years using there are no alignment issues at all.
The ifs vehicles are great for that but I can’t explain the old Prado being better. Maybe tuned differently? The new trucks are made for city driving that’s for sure
@@NorthOz yup couldn’t agree more but the place where I live ,Sabah the road condition is bad even the city roads are bumpy. I was considering to get the New Ford Ranger but after visiting the car dealership, test drove it and knowing the service cost and everything it is much more costly than the Hilux. My personal opinion is that if you could afford the car itself and the services then get the Ranger.
Great review. I'm in Pretotia and drive a D4D Hilux 4x4 twin cab auto. The same applies in South Africa as Australia. If you want a touring off road capable workhorse; it MUST be a Toyota. Because of unrivalled reliability, robustness, dealer network, parts availability and cost of ownership. It's not even close.

For what it’s worth…..I have never been a Ford fan. I have owned quite a few hiluxes from new. Some have been good, some not so much. In 2020 we again decided to upgrade however instead of just walking into the Toyota dealer as we had done in the past we decided to look at our options. We found that Ford offered better bang for your buck in the Wildtrak and so bought one. 12 months on and we were super happy with it on and off road and in a lot of areas it has been far, far superior to the Hilux experience. This is based on doing the same tracks in the same conditions that I had done in the hiluxes.
In early 2021 I drove a Raptor dealer demo and ordered one on the spot……..18 months on and all I can say is that I won’t be buying another Toyota any time soon. Everything about the Raptor is next level in fact I have never owned a better ute…..ever. In my opinion Toyota is totally asleep at the wheel and has a long way to go before it even comes close to the Wildtrak & Raptor. You also mentioned Toyota resale…..after purchasing the Raptor I sold my Wildtrak in under 2 weeks on carsales at a $7k profit. I know that supply issues have a bit to do with that however my last hilux was sold under the same circumstances and I did drop some coin in comparison.
As for your comment re big screens and your preference for analog buttons all I will say is that every car on the market now has electronics and screens so there’s that. On both the Fords I learnt to not touch any of the buttons other than those on the steering wheel because I now habitually operate everything via voice commands and the vehicle reacts accordingly making the buttons irrelevant.
Anyhow, enjoy your new Hilux, ……my comments are simply my personal experience based on the ones I have owned so not knocking your choice of vehicle purchase. It would be a boring world if we all drove the same car/ute.
Thanks for the comment. That’s good you had a nice experience with your Ford dealership and the trucks you bought. They definitely look great and would suit a lot of people. Perhaps more people will start buying Ford if they can see the same reliability and resale. I know I would. The resale is a bit tricky as all 4x4’s saw a spike in resale so the market is over inflated. When everything settles in a couple of years we will see how well the fords held value. They very well could have held the same as Toyota but past reports indicates otherwise. Like you said, if you all had the same truck it would be boring. Yes you pay a premium for Toyota which never have the latest and greatest tech but your paying for reliablity, serviceability and huge resale value. I have a 2013 FJ Cruiser and 2019 Prado (both purchased new) both are holding there value close to what i payed for them. Not once have they let me down, toyota's are basic for a reason because they are used in harsh environments that we have in Aus. My opinion of 10yrs ownership is the best 4wd is the FJ Cruiser love it do death and will never sell it. Ford i'm sorry are junk too many horror stories and before covid tax/shortage there resale was absolute garbage, just searching the used car pickeles auctions paints the picture. Love you video's mate keep up the great work.
Hi Ben, thanks for the comment. You are right there. Love the FJ’s and the Prado shares almost all the same parts as one (suspension etc). That’s what I love about Toyota. If you are out bush and something goes wrong on your Prado, you can use a part from your FJ to fix it. Resale means a lot to me as I can afford to lose $10k a year on depreciation and I know I can drive around in my truck for 5-10 years almost without losing a cent

I have been looking for a new ute, Hilux was my first choice as I am rural and on a farm, but I looked at the Amarok, the Ranger, Triton..and some look amazing inside. But I read about a lot of problems with the Ranger, and the Amarok shares too much with ford, so ruled them out for pretty much the exact same reasons you listed.
I love the look of the fancy screens, but want the Analog gauges the Hilux has. My thinking was if a screen freezes I can still access things. Same goes with the "infotainment" system. As for a manual, I have always had them, but now want Auto. Once they were better for 4wding, etc, but now Autos can do it all, and often better. Another factor for me is access to tyres. As I said I am rural, and when a tyre goes, and if you ruined the wall, then I want to be able to go to any small town tyre shop and find a tyre. The hilux's is a common size
I am still tossing up between the GR and the Rogue. I know I will be happy with either..and in the same Red as yours, I am over decades of white 4wd. Great Vid, well thought out and presented. Wish you huge success with your channel.

@@NorthOz Thanks mate, I am leaning towards the Rogue, although I am past camping, I like the roller cover. I wasn't keen on the carpet, but now I feel it might be better for throwing stuff in and not having it slide all over. Red ones are scarce right now, I found an ex demo with 3k on it, a few extras i'd have got put on too. But it's had repaired hail damage. I am not sure how I feel about it.
Great review, and agree on all fronts. My ‘21 Sr5 now has 80k on it and has averaged between 8-10 L/100. That is a mix of highway and metro/hills driving in Adelaide. I have an excavator i tow around the Adelaide hills, and my average climbs to about 12-14 L/100. The cabin is a great place to be, and you cant beat the easy to read instrument cluster with analogue gauges. The service and support from my dealer has been nothing but fantastic. Cant fault them. It makes the whole ownership experience that much better. I wont be leaving camp Toyota either for the foreseeable future. Your Rogue looks fantastic in that colour, and maybe just the model and colour i trade up to. Going to wait for the GR sport to hit show rooms before i decide. I have a 2018 sr5 being towing a 2ton trailer every day for work and it still going good nothing wrong just the fuel consumption I'm abit not happy about

Hilux is just awesome as a package. It just works. Sold a 6yo manual last year for $50k. Paid $52990. Resale is exceptional.

Yes O H you’ve touched on the unsurprising bias of ‘Ford sponsored’ motoring journos who will knowling omit features of the Hilux and conveniently avoid Raptor reliability issues especially one southern state reviewer who publicly stated he now owns one - it’s a big financial commitment for anyone and I would hope people do their due diligence and research as I’ve done always in life - oh and you’ve chosen well and also picked what I think is the best colour for the Hilux - I think the Prado’s best colour is ‘Kakadu Indigo Blue’ that I nearly bought in VIC.
100% agree. I didn’t want to put him on blast on this video but I’m sure everyone knows who I’m referring to. Indigo blue is my favourite colour too. The red was also my first choice in the hilux range and I’m glad I was able to get one in this colour

Hi Chris. Respectfully, I disagree. The purpose of this channel is to share my thoughts about the vehicles I drive and modify. If I didn’t share these thoughts, this channel wouldn’t exist. I understand you are saying I don’t need to justify my purchase, but I’m trying to give context surrounding the vehicle I chose. If I chose the Ranger, I don’t think I would as happy knowing the driveline could fail in remote situations. Hence why I made this video. Agree with everything other than the engine options. The 2.8L is super lacklustre tow engine, good luck having some weight on the car and then trying to tow a half decent caravan up a hill.
Thanks for the comment James. That’s what I’m told. Luckily, I’m not towing. This same engine is in the Prado and from the people I have spoken too, it doesn’t have any issues towing 2.5T. I’d imagine the hilux would be the same but then again, I wouldn’t know as I don’t tow anything… ever… haha

its nice to see the hilux now though where im from we dont get the rogue but we get something close to it called a hilux GR thats basically an SR5 with heftier suspension, bash plates and rock crawlers. to prove they are not just for show or gimmicks toyota handed them to the WRC organizers to map out the route and stages that are now used and after that they are now used as rescure or recovery vehicles
As a mechanic the 1GD FTV 2.8L turbo diesel is far way better and they run very good and strong everywhere without any issue at all

The V6 Diesel in the Ranger have Problems with the crankshaft bearings. In the F-150, different LandRover and Jag models you can see this Desaster 😢😢. That is the fact why I go for Toyota Hilux 😊😊

Please remember to thank Ford for upping engine power with 27% in 2011 and another 27% in 2022.
This forces your "blinded by tradition" brands, to also up engine power and interior specs.
When it comes to comfort, style, off road ability, wading, dust proofing, service intervals there is no match in the market.
Ford also led with the Raptor (and still is the only vehicle in its segement).
Ooh if I had a penny for every time a "Raptor fighter was promised".

Thanks N O - after having owned several Subarus I’ve found their reliability and build quality to be industry leading - therefore my choice for ute was a no-brainer with a Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi Triton a close second - on paper the Ford may look better but their unreliable and have a poor service/customer culture - I like the ergonomics of the Hilux with analogue speedometer, tachometer, fuel/coolant temp gauges and knobs on the infotainment system - it’s dangerous if you have to take your eyes off the road while fiddling with some larger touch screen - there are already stories on media with Ford Raptor complete screen failures and drive train issues with Ford being dismissive of the owners - I’m very impressed with my Hilux and service folk.
Completely agree. We have had a few rangers owners chiming in about how they have no issues with it but an overwhelming number of viewers have commented with first hand experience detailing fords poor customer service and multiple unreliable vehicles in their ownership. That’s telling us something
just don’t understand how Hilux justify the price point for a vehicle with the same tech from several years ago…
Pricing should be getting better considering the lack of any real innovation.

Fair point. I suppose the cost of manufacturing remains the same regardless of duration of a model. I don’t see them being able to make the vehicle cheaper as the model year goes on. But I see your point about staying competitive by dropping the price. I guess if we get all the tech that Ford has and they do it on a budget, there could be reliability issues or the price would go up to that of the raptor and not people are paying $85k + “just for a hilux” as some people put it
im ordering a Hilux and one of the biggy's to me was that they have two simple round dials for speedo and REV counter - I hate the Ford weird digital dash..and the 10 speed ranger auto was nuts ...always changing gear.

I waited for the Raptor and have been super keen to drive.
My test drive I was blown away by handling on the road the sheer power of the unit, it was mind blowing. If they had one for sale may have taken one home that day. After reflecting on the experience a few things then put me off. Electronics on electronics way to complicated unless you’re into gadgets, how many times does my PC crash a week and now it is controlling the car. Looking under the vehicle a relay attached to passenger side control arm with no protection. First time bush with my luck that will be gone. Will the car still run? What will it cost to replace and repair?
On my many years of driving I had never felt a steering that I didn’t feel. The electronic control just felt weird, nothing like any other vehicle I have driven. The bright orange highlights on aircon grills were a real distraction I’m in for neutral outlay and basics just way too much happening in the Ranger. As an off-road driver, I want to be driving, not the computer. Where’s the skill of the driver gone, relying on a computer, way to unreliable for me. I also tested Tub area as all the focus is on fitting a standard pallet between the wheel arches, I don’t plan on putting one in but try putting a standard bike in the back of the Ranger and you’re 20cm short. Fits straight in the Hilux. Also think of getting a Caravan later no hope with the Raptor normal Ranger would be ok but I also have a few issues with it.
I then waited for Rouge and on test drive was super impressed over my 2015 current model SR5 on handling noise and on road feel. The only downfall was it was just a little sluggish compared to my manual 2.8.
Then GRS option came, specs unknown, I then ordered the GRS and I am first on list with my Toyota dealer and looking forward for it to arrive later this year.
The Ford dealers I test drove the ranger/raptor still haven’t even got back to me ref: any of my questions.
I’m sticking with proven technology. I wish some of the extra tech being forced on the GRS wasn’t coming with it. Not perfect but looks like a huge improvement on my 2015.
I 100% agree. That's a great point about the length of the tray. Although the Ranger is a wider tray (between arches) the Hilux is still class leading. Let's face it, no one is putting a pallet in the back of one of these, that's what the workmates and SR's are for. The amount of tech worries me in the Ranger. What happens if the digital gauge cluster doesn't work? All of the gauges won't be visible. The steering on the Hilux is HEAVY! But it's a good weight. Heavier than my Prado was and it means that I have great feedback of what is under my wheels. I can feel the ruts, corrugations and undulations. Congrats on your GRS! Honestly, its going to be a fun truck and will be as reliable as the n80 Hilux's in the years before it. I hope you subscribe and stick around as I travel with and build this truck. Id wager a guess that in 25 years time the Hilux will still be around, whilst the Ranger wont be.
Although most new car owners arent phased by good longevity anymore, and only want a good 5 years or so.
Great point. That’s why I recommend the Ranger and the raptor over the hilux. Most people want the latest tech and creature comforts. I’m quite happy to sacrifice that so that I can build out the hilux to keep for the next 15+ years

Same here! I just did a 400km trip down south (camping video coming soon) and my total (including off-road) hasn’t gone above 8.7L/100km
Big issue when driving beyond the ‘black stump’ in Oz is spares or repairs. Toyota Hilux or Cruiser own the outback, every fuel stop will have Toyota spares, FACT. Thing is my 80 series is as tough as you can get, I’ve been thru and around Oz and worst tracks you can find. The Hilux is the next best option if you don’t want the size. I’ve driven the v8 LC and the 2012 Hilux in the centre and both have very few issues re toughness and these are the best testing grounds anywhere.

You're wrong on some part mate. The ranger has physical dials for volume and air conditioning

I had a Fortuner GXL through work for about 12 months, went up and down the coast 5000km trip 2021 with dog and the family, no trailer. Was formidable on the road, so capable and super comfortable. I now have a Prado VX that being said I am very fond of the Fortuner, so underrated.

Any Hilux no matter the trim level is money in the bank. They stop taking orders in Germany, only stock inventory is available and therefore used prices went up a lot.
There’s fear of no Hilux being available at all due to emissions standards, glad I got my 2022 Hilux sitting safe and sound.
