Pretty fair rewiew mate! 3.5 ton towing is a farce. Numbers on a paper to sell them{every brand}. I have a XLT V6 that works for a living. 2 years and 60000ks in and its a ripper. Legally and saftey wise 3 ton is max towing with all our tools on the back and it handles it like a handbag. Oh, and the door handles take about a month to get used to{old school F100 style} They are great because you actually have hold of the door when you open it and the wind from passing traffic ect doesn't tear it out of your hand. The factory brake controller is out of this world. You just set the gain on max and the vehicle brakes the trailer to pedal pressure. It works like air brakes so in an emergency brake situation it sends everything to the trailer first and then controls the ute. Definatley some excellent Aussie engineering going on there! The trailer light check feature is also awsome! It will be very interesting to see how the new Ranger SUPER DUTY goes when released. It's actually built to proper tow 3.5 ton and 1 ton + payload at the same time. 8000kg GCM.
I have the Everest & find the handle gives you more control of the door when you open it, especially in tight carparks & on slopes when the door can fly open as you don't have to pull a latch then grab the door. In regards to handling better then previous models the wider wheel base & changes to suspension from the previous model made a huge difference to how the Everest manages towing too
Had mine for a year, I’ve towed I’ve done some 4wheeling and pretty much bought the car for what I use it for… all round it’s incredible, does it all and yes it takes time to learn how to use it but anyone with enough grey matter between the ears will learn how to use it properly, as far as your review goes I think you just need time with car to make an accurate assumption. Good job 👍🏻
I found with my ranger when its in drive you can use the minus button on the side of the shifter to lock out gears if you don't want to use the whole 10 gears when im not towing i only use the first 7 gears i think this is a good feature im really enjoying your travels keep up the good work.
Great review guys. It's nice to have a sponsored review. As a kiwi who has traveled abit in Australia I'd say for most states of Oz your fuel numbers will improve.
Yo keeren good review . I’ve had 2 new rangers. And they have been incredible to tow. Never been a fan of ford had a Colorado and bt50 and I thought they were the ants pants till I got the new ranger. The first ranger didn’t like a drain water bollard and pretty well destroyed it hitting it front on but the air bags failed to deploy which was an issue. But as far as towing it’s incredible. I do kangaroo valley and Macquarie pass all the time which is incredibly steep and it chews it up like I’ve got no van on the back. Any one thats going to shit on the ranger you need to get in one to tow it will change your option on ford. Exactly about the electronic hand brake it shits me so much trying to line up under a d 35 hitch. You’re correct about that . 👍🏻 I’ve had one for more than 2 years now and for towing a good size van it’s awesome . I don’t have chump change for a Land Cruiser or ram or Silverado but this ranger is pretty awesome to tow👍🏻
Ford update is to turn off the lane keeping when towing, easy as double clicking a button on the steering wheel. Just towed a 2.7t van from melb to Brisbane over 2 days, in my V6 XLT, cruise set at 100kph in normal drive mode, fuel economy per tank varied between 15.6 up to 18.5. Overall economy over 1800km 17.6, the reason for 22 litres per 100 is unsung tow/haul mode which blocks off 9/10 gears.
I tow a boat, so the V6 is perfect for me. I also wanted a canopy because when i go away, it's what i live out of. Living out of a wagon looks fine if you have a van, but nothing beats camping out of a canopy.
The car will let you know to put your hands on the wheel. Its not exactly self driving 😮 but could stop a driver falling asleep 😴 from crashing into oncoming traffic
Dude. My very first tandem skydive was with a guy from Australia. I feel like his accent was a little bit thicker. It made the experience sooo much more fun haha. You ready Mate!
How did you overcome the urge to tailgate everyone on the road? If you could share that info, it would help the rest of the Ranger driver community and the Australian and no doubt New Zealand people would love you even more 😉
Hahahahaha best comment yet! Made me laugh! We even got tailgated by rangers whilst driving a ranger! This is a real issue! We need a current affair haha 😂😂
The rest of the world is being tailgated by Audi. They were the only ones not being bothered by Covid because they're used to stay 2 metres away for ages
Appreciate hearing your views on the Wide track Ranger, very interesting. Trust you’ve both enjoyed your short visit to NZ. Stay safe out there. Merry Christmas cheers 🍻
As a rule of thumb I tow 2/3 what a car says it can tow and does it safely. My car says 3 ton so I only tow up to 2. Also means the vehicle weights more than the trailer which is rule number one in engineering towing principles
Not a bad review for a short time towing, but an honest review would be after at least 12 months in towing a van around New Zealand there's a lot more steep terrain and rough roads over there, time will tell
Even the mighty 200 series requires a GVM/GCM upgrade to enable it to legally tow 3500 kg caravan, it also benefits from a torque lock up kit. The Ranger fitted with a decent GVM/GCM upgrade to 7005 kg will keep the tow rig heavier than the caravan. The new super duty Ranger will be an interesting vehicle.
Great review. Not sure, but looked like it had aftermarket suspension? This would play a huge part in how it tows. With std ford suspension it would possibly be a whole different driving/towing experience.
I had a v8 cruiser given that it was un tuned, but I believe my Ranger Tows better. The ride is definitely harsher, but that was to be expected. Also, you 100 % get used to the door handle.
No brainer mate Leroy is way comfier, way more powerful, way better off road. But one car is 30k more expensive just for the stock car so you would expect that.
Hi Keelen, very honest review, I believe the new Ranger has approx 50 wider track which is part of the reason that it fells more stable when towing and I also think the new 10 Speed Auto also helps with it felling when driving. As for the driver Aids, I don't think you will be able to buy a new car without them, it does take some getting used to. I don't own a Ranger but did look at them prior to buying my latest tow vehicle. Any way I hope that you and Sarah have a wonderful Christmas and happy safe New Year
Great video and thanks n for the info Info like the lift and the tyres flares and rims Can you share the rims / offset and suspension you went for Cheers
Am interested in the comparison you gave with the previous model being bullied by the van. I think the wheel base and track width play a big role here. Also the distance from the rear axle to tow ball. Are these dimensions a fair bit different?
Also I think some of the issue of bullying may come down to hitch anti sway bar set up.... 3.5 ton no sway bar is dead set dangerous on a straight ball type anti sway bar is chalk and cheese diffrent although since changing to a D035/45 hitch with no sway bar its even better again even at hwy speeds the only real time I feel the van being there is obvious spots like acceleration and up hills you feel weight but no side to side
@@SarahandKeelanTravels their life begins in the same factory. Ford & VW developed the engineering together. They have separate design teams that finish them in their own style.
Excellent review and well balanced. I also hate the electric park brake. I understand why they are all going that way but in 10 years of owning my current vehicle the only fault I have ever had is with the park brake and its been an issue 3 times now, once requiring a tow into Alice Springs (under warranty thankfully). Sometimes I don't know how the manufacturers come up with an allowed ball weight of 350kg. I think mine might do it with no fuel and no driver in the car but thats the only way I can see it happening without overloading the rear axle. Anyway a very good review thanks.
Btw you don’t need to go into the tow mode to access the tow settings. I’m surprised at your towing fuel economy, I’m towing a 2 tonne camper with mine and sit around 12-13l per 100km and mine sits at 3 tonne with my extras and GCM upgrade.
Slightly longer wheel base helps towing downside is a little bit less rampover angle so its a bit of give and take. GVM upgrade? How much would you gain in the respect of towing/load capacity.
So is the cruiser twice as good cause they are twice the price. I thought being the age you are you would love the tech. Anyway I love mine and love the tech would not own another car without it.
They put a billet steel crank in them for Ranger. I haven't heard of one yet. They do have a turbo oil feed hose issue in the first series that has blown a few up.
The crankshaft snapping was isolated to one batch of crankshaft fitted to Land Rovers as they used an earlier version of this motor. The batch of crankshaft had been incorrectly hardened which subsequently caused bearing failure, the bearing seized and resulted in the crank snapping. Ford are using a forged crank in the version in the Ranger and there hasn't been any failures of Ranger cranks to my knowledge.
The low pressure return feed line which created an oil leak that if ldft would resjlt in emptying the engine of oil with a resultaengine failure. I believe Ford have modified that line on later models.
Your fuel economy is not as good as what it would been if you had the original tyres on. I have bigger tyres on my Ranger, and fuel economy went down. But I do agree that the Ranger has too much technology. If I had to choose between what is on the market, I would still go for the Ranger.
I suspect the door handles are designed that way for Euro regulations. In the Netherlands (possibly other EU countries too) you are required to open the drivers door with your inside hand (called the Dutch Reach) as it forces you to turn and get a better view of traffic approaching from behind. Very hard to do that with the door card latch of the previous models….
to be completely honest there's no comparison. 200 is like riding in a floating cinema chair compared to the ranger. it also tows way better but that might be because its running 800nm at all 4 wheels!
Do not get this wrong, The yorke peninsula is stopping on beach camping due to more heavy vehicles. The date is feb 3rd. You can drive on the beach on daylight for day use, but no overnight camping.
That’s a really good review Keelan, I have had the V6 XLT cab chassis for a bit over a year with a combination of towing a 3T van and remote touring trips like Dirk Hartog Island unhitched, this car has done it all very well. Comparing to the other dual cab utes - the Ranger is the best, comparing to a 200 series it’s probably not quite apples with apples, utes always tow worse due to the overhang from the rear axle but for a lot of us wagons aren’t too useful and a Ute is preferred and that comes with a compromise. Anyway in my felt experience I don’t really disagree with anything you have said, the door handles become normal and mine has far less alarms being a cab chassis less premium model 👍
Not exactly true both utes and wagons have there pros and cons wagons are nicer to travel in interior nicer ride nicer but utes have a longer wheelbase which helps with getting swayed around rear springs are harder and carry weight better eg tongue weight both have pros and cons
Well, I offered to test Ronny’s 2.8 against Leroy our 200 but he didn’t seem keen. All the 2.8L VS v8 landcruiser comparisons on the internet are manual 70 series v8 cruisers which are a single turbo slugs ..where the 200 series have two turbos and are automatic trans which are known to be way better tow vehicles with a lot more usable power from standard with the extra turbo different tune and auto trans to deliver the power better. Automatic vs automatic sounds like a more apples for apples test to me.. but I was suggest using a stock 200.. not Leroy as he makes twice as much as a standard one and would be a very unfair test
You didn’t mention standard suspension like all tow vehicles needs upgrading? And the positive of the Ranger is the option of a very impressive GVM/GCM upgrade…
A factory Tow controller introduced to our market after being available in the USA for decades, who knew that people would want to tow heavy stuff with their ute…
I’ve had a couple of Rangers Not a huge fan, but they are comfortable to travel in As for towing 3.5 ton, just because you can doesn’t mean you should Kerb weight is your friend when things start going wrong Like any new car a lot of the gadgets are more of a pain in the ass than useful
Ford dumped that v6 mini power stroke here in the US y'all. Problematic, back to its initial PSA/landrover days. Bearing/crank issues and a bunch of other stuff.
I’m from country vic and that steering when you try and go around a header or something to other side of Road it nearly pulls you back into what your trying to over take!!
In the past i have had a bad run with Ford warranty . Since that time I have spent more than $500,000 buying other brands. It seems that you have to bail out of owning a Ramger at around 40,000 kms before they start giving headaches. The sre the most common 4wd seen on flat bed tow trucks.
Sold mine and jumped into a Y62, much nicer and a lot more stable on the road when towing. BTW they’re just the standard LED headlights not the Matrix.
I'm not sure what's wrong with a 600kg payload when towing 3500kg. It's fine for most of us. The caravan towball weight doesn't alter that payload at all because while you add it to the GVM you also take it off the towed weight.
Lane assistance is dangerous if you going through rd works and following the cones around the car keeps turning you into the work zone to run the workers over 😮
Unfortunately for a lot of the 'annoying' software features it's all around meeting 5 star ANCAP which is why it's there on every new 4x4 pretty much needs them (otherwise they're basically guaranteed to fail commercially as it would exclude them from lots of fleet requirements and finance options). So unfortunately lane keep, emergency breaking and the other ones are here to stay and there's nothing Ford (or anyone really) can do to change it.
Personally, I phucking hate off~road modes. It only knows how to sap momentum. They are specifically REACTIVE as opposed to ACTIVE dif-locks. Acronyms are for selling cars to non-car people.
Just go backwards in time and buy the Toyota holly grail and beath it up guys you will be living the dream and have a fantastic landcuiser , yep the holly grail 😊the last off the best 👌 2 solid diffs no computers and a comfy ride 👍
Good summary m8,not sure why you would keep comparing it to ur 200.sarah states in a comment ur 200 has been modified to 800nm of torque so ur not comparing apples with apples.i jus sold a modified 200 and bought an everest and honestly it uses min 5 litres less per 100ks,up to 8litres and that is towing a 3500 kg digger so not mu h windage. Also seems tyre size, roof tents etc have a big effect on fuel usage.i have been a toyota guy all my life as still have 2 but love my everest so far, hope u enjoyed ur stay in nz m8.
True blue! Weird though because the bowser said similar but I guess your actually travelling further than what the clock will think due to bigger tyres!! Good read!!
Geeze you must be heavy on the throttle! We tow our van in NZ (over 3t) with ours and get about 17lt/100km mixed road towing and sub 10 when not and I don't tend to hang around.
The title should read Toyota owner realises how basic a Toyota is 😜 Good review mate, compare the power of the v6 to a standard v8 200, they are pretty similar If the ranger doesn’t feel powerful enough it can be tuned like your 200
Great car like I said and I’m not one eyed Toyota man, I know a good car when I see it!! But I don’t think it’s the same power, I’ve been in heaps of stock 200s, and heaps of fast powerful cars (not 4wds) and you can definitely notice the bigger displacement engines. Just like when I step out of our 200 into a Silverado I notice the difference same same. Leroy is running 800nm at all 4 wheels and over 1000nm on the fly wheel which is still a reliable tune. No doubt you could get a similar number out of Ranger even in 2h without the drivetrain loss .. but it wouldn’t last long being that strung out on a smaller engine. That’s why no tuners push them that far, Not just my opinion that’s just the science. But like I said, it underwhelms me in that department but the tech, the look of it, the interior. The rager has a lot of points it kills the 200.. but power and comfort ain’t them..
It’s just that the caravan looks like it’s nose diving behind it. Also for safety it should be run at close to its GVM in order to be at least as heavy as the caravan.
caravan was nose down slightly which is not ideal at all, however that should result in the van towing better apposed to it towing nose up. Interesting! What does that mean for the person who doesn't want to tow at 2900kg? So you recommend people adding weight because it's not safe otherwise?
These screens with everything on them and no manual knobs seem to put an extra hardship on right handed people with right hand drive vehicles because I can see you reaching across the steering wheel to fumble with the screen. In the states we're not as impacted by this trend away from actual knobs.
I believe you have made a mistake on the weights and payload as you may have double dipped- the car can tow 3500 with a GCM of 6400 and a tare of 2400. And a GVM of 3350. You take the whole 3500 off your gcm and end up with 2900 then you DONT minus the ball weight off 2900? The ball wieght is off the full gcm. So if it’s 3350 minus at max 350 then you have 3000 and essentially 600 payload however yes the car is goverend by the GCM therefore its self can only weigh 2900 if towing a full 3500kg so this is still a 500kg payload as a ford has the fuel tank included in the tare. I have a bull bar , long range tank, draw and 2 people in car and still have 200kgs to pack in.
Not many vehicles can tow 3.5 tonnes. Landcruiser 300 just Landcruiser 76 Nissan patrol y62 just. Both have GVM upgrades available if required. Isuzu truck Iveco truck. Rear axle weights are the issue
@@geoffjones8657 A bit more than that. I have an earlier 3.2 Ranger and that can tow around 3100kgs in practice . Certainly not it's rated 3500kgs My van goes just on 3000kg and I have it weighed regularly and am about 100kgs inside the limit on the scales.
Definitely didn’t infer that. My 200 series smokes the Ranger. Can’t compare a coil sprung v8 that weighs 3.5t towing 3.5t VS a car with a way smaller engine, leaf springs that weighs 2t wet.. not even close
No absolutely not, we do not receive anything from any car manufacturer. it's payed promotion because we display discount codes at the start of ALL our videos. There is button I click when uploading the videos. TH-cam doesn't declare it a paid promotion I declare it a paid promotion. Most videos you see should display that at the start due to the fact 95% of people have some sort of promotion they make money from in videos. We believe it's important to display that out of respect for the people who watch our show. thats why we do it. the reason for the review was because I think people would find it interesting and helpful for those looking at buying a new vehicle.

Great work merry Xmas to you all Cobb NT
Full tank of fuel is part of the Kerb weight so doesn't eat into the listed payload.
Ball weight is added to your GVM but would not add to your GCM if you're already factoring 3.5t for it.
I found the door handles the easiest thing to get used to.
What's your feedback on sand towing? You use sand mode or just 4L? I have the same track +1 year and im loving it. Cheers from Chile!
Love the review guy, I would love to hear what you would have to say about the Everest sport with STEINBAUER chip increases to 720nm.
Does the screen have satellite view and elevation information?

@redroo12, hopefully, all good now then. Just watch for the cam gears shearing off also?
@@redroo12there is some reports of crank bearing issues out there.
I was surprised at 22L/100. My petrol Raptor is the same. My van is a lot lighter but at 100kph it’s aero dynamics that sucks the juice.
Can’t beat Leroy man but great review🍻👍
I suspect the door handles are designed that way for Euro regulations. In the Netherlands (possibly other EU countries too) you are required to open the drivers door with your inside hand (called the Dutch Reach) as it forces you to turn and get a better view of traffic approaching from behind. Very hard to do that with the door card latch of the previous models….
Great insight thanks mate!! Never would have thought that
Not sure how your driving towing, done 30,000km towing 3500kg,ave 17.2 lt/100.
I towed a 2.5t caravan with a 2ltr bi turbo ranger raptor and got 21ltrs per hundred km.
That's very high. The 3L Everest gets around 14.
Great video. Is the paid partnership in this video with Ford?
Great review Keelan..quick question..if you had to choose would you keep your 200 or go the Ranger? 🤔
to be completely honest there's no comparison. 200 is like riding in a floating cinema chair compared to the ranger. it also tows way better but that might be because its running 800nm at all 4 wheels!
We pick up our SKT spec Urban X-Treme in 6 days. Can’t wait.
good on ya! youll bloody love it!! Congrats!
Hi Keegan. Would love to see your thoughts a the new 76 with a four cylinder? As what i have seen so far they tow better than the V8 ? Safe Travels
The gcm also includes All the big American vehicles, then comes down to licensing , on Australian licenses 4.5t is max
??? Australian Car License permits to drive a vehicle upto 4.5t GVM. Can tow a trailer of upto 9t GVM (ATM) on a car license
A factory Tow controller introduced to our market after being available in the USA for decades, who knew that people would want to tow heavy stuff with their ute…
its wicked I love it!
I’ve had a couple of Rangers
Not a huge fan, but they are comfortable to travel in
As for towing 3.5 ton, just because you can doesn’t mean you should
Kerb weight is your friend when things start going wrong
Like any new car a lot of the gadgets are more of a pain in the ass than useful
I got rid of mine and bought a y62 😊
@@R32GODZILA with a lot less payload and a lot higher fuel consumption.
@@wwfgumby 2L per 100kms extra towing… still well within my weights and a lot more room in side
Ford dumped that v6 mini power stroke here in the US y'all. Problematic, back to its initial PSA/landrover days. Bearing/crank issues and a bunch of other stuff.
Have seen a lot of big end bearing issues here… as low as 50,000kms
Cam gears shearing also.
I’m from country vic and that steering when you try and go around a header or something to other side of Road it nearly pulls you back into what your trying to over take!!
It’s crazy isn’t it! I hate the car when it thinks it’s smarter than you are
In the past i have had a bad run with Ford warranty .
Get up at 5cm tmrw morning, put tie on and catch a bus for 1 yr ->
New Ranger has a wider track which makes a big difference IMO
Had my ranger for couple months and now getting out of other cars I reach for the handle in the same spot as the ranger 😂
I'm not sure what's wrong with a 600kg payload when towing 3500kg. It's fine for most of us. The caravan towball weight doesn't alter that payload at all because while you add it to the GVM you also take it off the towed weight.
Was thinking the same when that was said, 500 odd kg payload + ball weight not including
500kg will disappear super fast!!
@SarahandKeelanTravels it's better than a LC in standard form. You have to remember in New Zealand we don't have easy GVM upgrades like you do.
@@SarahandKeelanTravels oh yea agree I’ve had to do the gvm,gcm to tow decent van with old ranger
@@DeneOLoughlin-ek9ee GVM upgrades are a scam anyway
Lane assistance is dangerous if you going through rd works and following the cones around the car keeps turning you into the work zone to run the workers over 😮
That's not good.
Ford released a statement saying that if you are towing you must turn lane assist off.
Push a button twice and its off simples
I agree
So I guess your pair will be getting a Wild track when you get back to Oz ??
Narh mate
@SarahandKeelanTravels bet ya will get a new car though as lil and Jake did
I would like to see the set up on weight scale, that tell the story not just chitter chat
Just go backwards in time and buy the Toyota holly grail and beath it up guys you will be living the dream and have a fantastic landcuiser , yep the holly grail 😊the last off the best 👌 2 solid diffs no computers and a comfy ride 👍
The v6 ranger is a thirsty beast
I hate electric hand brakes. Our Mazda CX-5 did a module and you can't get the brake off.
It looks like it's got 35's on it. So that would kill the power and brakes, if the diff gears haven't been changed.
yea the v6 blow up my mates just blew up with less than 50,000ks no engines in stock so it's a 5 month wait lots are blowing
I’m glad i got rid of my Toyota Land Cruiser
Ford ranger is a lot better to drive
Good summary m8,not sure why you would keep comparing it to ur 200.sarah states in a comment ur 200 has been modified to 800nm of torque so ur not comparing apples with apples.i jus sold a modified 200 and bought an everest and honestly it uses min 5 litres less per 100ks,up to 8litres and that is towing a 3500 kg digger so not mu h windage. Also seems tyre size, roof tents etc have a big effect on fuel usage.i have been a toyota guy all my life as still have 2 but love my everest so far, hope u enjoyed ur stay in nz m8.
I think the Rangers larger tyre diameter would make the calculated fuel numbers worse too cuzy bro
Must do mate, checked the dash readings with the bowser math and it all lines up!
Wet timing belt?
Only on the 4cyl 2.0.
The title should read Toyota owner realises how basic a Toyota is 😜
Good review mate, compare the power of the v6 to a standard v8 200, they are pretty similar
If the ranger doesn’t feel powerful enough it can be tuned like your 200
Great car like I said and I’m not one eyed Toyota man, I know a good car when I see it!!
They are super comfy for when you are stuck on the side of the road after all that computerised crap shits itself.
Stick to your horse and cart.
Don’t be upset you can’t afford one.
How is your horse and buggy going? still using candles?
Is it really fair to compare power with yours, when you have had a tune.
Landcruiser 300 just
Landcruiser 76
Nissan patrol y62 just.
Both have GVM upgrades available if required.
Isuzu truck
Iveco truck.
Rear axle weights are the issue
correct most twin cabs are maxed at 2500kgs because of weights, I would like to see the car on the scales with a caravan not just chatting.
front axle issue with ford
@@geoffjones8657
A bit more than that.
I have an earlier 3.2 Ranger and that can tow around 3100kgs in practice .
Certainly not it's rated 3500kgs
My van goes just on 3000kg and I have it weighed regularly and am about 100kgs inside the limit on the scales.
second !!!! love series 🤩❤💯
2nd mate!! welldone
The sangyong will tow 3.5 tonne with full payload gcm 6720kg.🎉
all that tech is just waiting to put the car in limp mode
Any fuel injected car can go into limp mode
Sorry to disappoint you, my Son has a V6 Ranger. It has down 90k KMs in two years, used for his business. Zero issues with it.
Or crawl mode when you want momentum in sand or mud! You can’t beat the good old dif lock🤬 ( from disappointing personal experience)
@@patrickmaher4909 90,000 km is fark all when it's done 400,000 no issues then start bragging.
The mere inference that any towing vehicle is better than a Toyota is enough to make a video "controversial".😊
Definitely didn’t infer that. My 200 series smokes the Ranger. Can’t compare a coil sprung v8 that weighs 3.5t towing 3.5t VS a car with a way smaller engine, leaf springs that weighs 2t wet.. not even close
TH-cam says this is a paid promotion, did you receive money or products from Ford or Ford ancillary services for this review
