Thank you for this! A quick tip for the microSD card is to format it to NTFS before using it. I found mine was exFAT by default and was extremely slow. After changing it it was significantly faster
I don’t know about speed, but I do know that the same files on exfat will take up more disk space than ntfs. Unless you’re swapping an external storage solution between consoles, Androids, and Apples (which I do) you’re best off using ntfs.

You don't need a keyboard to enter the bios, holding the volume down on system startup will do the trick. But the keyboard is highly recommended for handling of other things.
When reinstalling the OS you DO NOT need a keyboard. From an OFF state, hold down the VOLUME DOWN then boot (keep holding) until you get into the BIOS. Just did this tonight. You can do it all with the Ally by itself FYI
3:56 you don't need extra keyboard to do that. just press volume+ key during boot and you go into the BIOS setup with onboard controller then you can to the recovery.
Now you need a guide for Windows 11 itself. Removing unnessary app and settings like MAS Office, one drive, and other services that not only slows it down but sends tracking data to MS and it’s partners.
Got mine on 12th. Quite happy with the performance so far. My only complain is that I wish there was TDP and fan control slider in the command center so that you could adjust on the fly without having to go to armory crate. Now a days I predominantly use the manual mode because the asus preset tends to run hot. For same tdp my ally runs 15° cooler with more aggressive fan curve.
The fan curve resets on manual and it’s super annoying. Go and take a peek it literally is going to be damn near flattened. At the end of the day I just run turbo mode or if I feel it’s beating up too much I got and grab the 70 degree slider and crank it to 100% on both fans. 🤷🏾♂️ if they die I got a warranty and it seems they don’t spin too fast to get loud anyway.
@wanted247ha8 You need to make separate profile for battery and plugged in. After setting up tdp and fan curves, make sure to press the check mark ✅️ on the right side of the profile name. I set up two profiles on battery and two on plugged in. Once set up, neither tdp nor fan curve changes.
I'd really recommend everyone skip the Microsoft account sign-in during setup. On the sign-in page, enter a fake email and password 3 or so times and it'll skip the setup and prompt you to create a local user account instead.
The only thing that i seriously want this device over steam deck is because it is run on windows which i very much prefer. I’ve been using manual mode 13/15/25 on battery power seems to work a lot better than silent mode 10w just isn’t enough, could probably get away with 12w instead of 13 since it seems to run at 12 with these settings anyways. Then I just have it cranked all the way up for ac 30/43/53
Wish this video came out a few days ago. It took ages to set it up (and I still am). Had an issue where it would be stuck on the republic of gamers splash screen then automatically turned off when I was updating armory crate and had to reboot. I realized it was overheated and it would automatically turn off. So I waited a while and bam, worked. There's also an armory crate bug that says you don't have optimum display/performance if you use a 3rd party dock. This is a known bug that ASUS says they'll fix.
If you have a computer Dock laying around TRY it on your ALLY!!! I just plugged in a J5 Dock I used for work computer and I am running Diablo 4 on my Alienware 34" gaming monitor. Looks Awesome and plays smooth!!
I'm really torn about the Ally. I've been alternating between my Steam Deck and the Ally since Monday. I may end up keeping it just for a dedicated emulator machine and keep my steam deck for everything else, solely because it's so much easier to run emulators on the Ally, and they run far smoother at higher scaling.
Personally I don't really have the money to get an Ally for myself, but as a Linux user just hearing how many times Russ says the word "update" makes my head spin lmao.
But everything else in theory should run better on the ally as well… you can literally put steam os on it if you prefer that layout. Aside from having no touch pad, ally win in every other way, especially if you buy a separate controller for it
@@Wild-Coma So far what I'm getting though is that the deck has better TDP at lower performant games, and the software is definitely more mature. I think if you mainly play steam games the deck is a very comfortable experience. Yeah, you could put steam OS on the ally, but it's Chimera OS, not the same OS that's currently on Deck right now. Moreover, SteamOS on deck right now is optimized to work with the hardware the Deck has right now. I think for people who are more inclined for high performance games, competitive multiplayer games, and don't mind the windows jank and the constant need to tinker with your device, the Ally is the way to go. It's a powerhouse, even though sometimes it feels like it's brute forcing its performance out. If you just want to grab a device, download a few casual or indie games and not have to configure settings and manage updates all the time, the Deck is a much better experience for that. There's definitely a use case for both of these. I tend to gravitate towards the Deck just because I don't really play any of the games that don't run on deck anyway, and while I do tinker on it from time to time I just want something that I know will just work. Even the little things like the steam community keymaps that other people have found works for them that I can just download for a game is just so useful to me.

Thanks for the video! Immensely helpful.
Do you think you can make an updated setup guide given that a lot has changed over the last 6 months?
Thanks
Дякую за це відео. Мені дуже допомогло!
Thanks for this guide! I just set up my Ally using your guide.
Do you plan to do an EmuDeck set up guide specifically for the Rog Ally?
Asus needs to streamline the updates into just Armoury Crate. Having to check 2 apps is just ridiculous.
The screen is insane on the Ally.
Personally I don't really have the money to get an Ally for myself, but as a Linux user just hearing how many times Russ says the word "update" makes my head spin lmao.
@@arkamukherjee457 It's brighter, better resolution, but the colors aren't as good. Freesync makes it a lot smoother though.
I'm also planning on using it as a handheld pc as well and not just for gaming
I don’t have Ally yet but I’ve been watching hundreds of videos of it lol When I get my checks I’ll get one though
