The laptop comes just a few weeks after the 710s Plus we reviewed last week was released. The 720s is better in a couple of ways. First it has a built in 940MX GPU from Nvidia (unfortunately it doesn't have the newly announced low end GPU). It also has the improved Lenovo keyboard and trackpad we've seen on their other 2017 devices.

Great review. I was planning to buy a Dell XPS 13 i7 to my college-bound son but this laptop seems as capable and $300 less expensive.
Bingo Hall which one i have basic MacBook Pro 2017 refurbished I like it but it’s not so powerful it gets warm I want to get xps15 but expensive so either this with 16gb ram or Inspiron what you think

Got mine for around $850 with 2yr warranty and 2 year ADP. normally its a $1070 configuration but Lenovo was having a back to school sale and was able to find coupons online.Its a very good ultrabook. looks a lot better in person.

TO ALL WHO ARE CONCERNED WITH "FANS TOO LOUD OR OBNOXIOUS". -THERE IS A FIX. I just bought a used one on Ebay. Yes, stock settings, fans are loud. But go to advanced power settings and set the "maximum processor state" (both battery and plugged in) to 98. After this, i RARELY hear the fans go off. And if they do, it is because im gaming.
Will that affect the performance in anyway?

I love you videos and I like how the reviews are all laid out in the same manner, making it easy to navigate through them. It would be great if you could add screen quality and 4K editing to your reviews. For screen quality, I've found that Macbooks are sort of superior, so that could be a subjective benchmark, and for 4K editing a simple "is it possible to edit 4K video in Adobe Premiere Pro? Yes/No" would be sufficient. Thank you for all the work you put into your reviews!
Thanks! I am going to talk about this on this week's wrap-up video. At this stage of development any of the current Intel Kaby Lake processors will do just fine with 4k video editing. Best performance will be had with an i7 processor but i5's can get the work done too. Key is having enough RAM, 8GB is good 16 better.

i have a yoga 510 with i3 7100u, r5 m430, 8gb ddr4 and 128gb ssd that i use for school. Great 14 inch convertable that i can fold into a tablet to draw then fold it back into a laptop and take notes and even play gta 5 in class at a 40fps avg (720p, normal/high)

I read that the fans are extremely loud, even on a regular use. I was ready to compromise on this one (top spec mx150, i7 8550u, 16GB, 512SSD) and not going for xps15, but the fan noise really put me off. Would like to hear your thoughts on that issue.
XPS 15 is more expensive and a much better laptop. If you can afford it, go for it

I read several post of people complaining about the loudness of the fans. Some said they could not take it to office/class because it was too loud. What is your experience? Did Lenovo release some BIOS updates to fix this?

Is it an anti-glare screen?
I really like this laptop. But why only one SO DIMM ! I don't like the fact that is configured in single channel memory. It isn't a deal-breaker but something they could avoid. It would have been better if it was soldered on but in dual channel 2x 4GB modules.
Design-wise it looks amazing.
Any recommendations for a stay at home laptop? It won't be leaving my house, so it doesn't need to be super thin and light. It won't be used for gaming. I just want something reliable with at least two USB jacks, a SD slot, and preferably with a 7th gen or later i5 chip. Good battery life would be a bonus, but again it will never be far from an outlet. I'm trying to stay at $800 or lower and I've been looking at the Dell Inspiron 5000 series, but several people have name-dropped Lenovo and Asus. Any thoughts?
Are you looking for something portable? Reason I ask you can save some $$$ if you don't go with a laptop and look at a desktop of some kind.

The fan is completely silent, even when watching TH-cam videos or streaming on Netflix. The fans only turn on when downloading applications or files or when playing games. However, the fan noise does fluctuate between loud and soft.

You mention that it has Thunderbolt 3 with 2 PCIE lanes, but it seems that the eGPU works fine with it. Is the two lane really a constraint to using the eGPU? Also Lenovo stated that the speed is 40Gbp/s on their website but two lanes should only give 20Gbp/s.
I did some extensive testing in this video : th-cam.com/video/5CqyLtXaYf8/w-d-xo.html -- The only reduction I found in performance was when the GPU was piping video back into the main display. I have a four lane laptop in now that I'll do some additional testing with soon.

it's not silent the fans are not annoying but you can hear them
nope this price range is where i throw slimness out the window and opt for a better (but slightly bulkier with better cooling) gaming and computing experience as there are quad cores with 1050/mx150/960m that are cheaper than this...

Try the new Xiaomi Air 13.3 inch laptop, it has the mx150
XJLCA That's nice, but the GPU isn't really prevalent right now. We'll probably won't see it that much until the next iteration of laptops.
I recommend getting a laptop for 250-550 for school/work/study/documents/music/etc and spending the rest on a real desktop/sff/itx rig at home for gaming
Desktop components are going into laptops now. Nvidia no longer has a mobile series. You can get a 1060 based laptop for a pretty good price nowadays.
I prefer a nice desktop, too, but a laptop is very viable now as an all purpose device.

Lon.TV not really a mobile chip. Just a rebadged GT 1030. Even the 1080 in laptops is a full desktop 1080
Jason Alec it's a full 1080. The only thing that is adjusted, if any, is clock speed. It's the exact same gpu. That really depends on the cooling of the laptop. It's a GP104 with 2560 Cuda cores and 8 gigs of gddr5x
charlie brownau the whole point of getting usb-c/thunderbolt as standard in laptops is so that you can use external GPU’s as well as charging and docking. Buy the case and change out the GPU when ever you need a faster one. It is even semi-portable compared to a desktop. Most average users will only need the GPU on occasions, for rendering, casual gaming, etc. Obviously if you are a serious gamer then that setup is not appropriate, but we are talking students, home and small business use and a 720 and an external GPU would work great.

yes one is solder on the board 4 gigs and 1 upgradable slot up to 16 gigs under a metal plate

I believe the new 720s has 4 lanes - the 8th gen i5 model.
iQwobble I can report that it doesn't, however 2 lanes doesn't seem to throttle the performance of an eGPU, at least with current gen graphics.
Is this considered a professional/business model?
The Thinkpad version is their pro line, we'll have a review of that soon.

Nice review! I wish laptops had upgradeable gpus that were easy to install. Im sure they could design them that way but im guessing companies plan for people to buy new gear instead of upgrading gear. Kind of a waste of materials if you think about it with Apple being the king of non upgradeable laptops. Ok rant over :)

RockstarBruski - Just like mobile phone batteries, it's in these companies interests to not make their products upgradeable or certain parts replaceable. It's what is known as 'inbuilt obsolescence'.
sad but very true! I use a galaxy S7 that has a built in battery and is slowly getting less and less battery life over the past two years.

Jay Smith you are smart to keep using your LG G4. here in the US we used to be able to get the latest and top of the line phones like LG G4, Samsung s7 edge and iphone 6 for about $100 to $200 when renewing our cell service plans for two years
but all the cell service companies stopped offering that option so for any new top tier phones (s8, i7, etc.. They only offer lease and financing or full retail price which pretty much is going to now cost $700 on up per phone.
Its getting crazy expensive! But at least several companies still offer unlimited data plans. Im still amazed that families are paying so much monthly fees for all their cell phones
as i grew up when we only had one landline phone in our house for $25 a month and cell phones hadnt been invented yet.

the fan noise is ok,but it turn up randomly even when you dont use the dgpu its not so bad but it isnt optimal
How's the wifi performance? Saw on notebookcheck and they say it was a real let down?

Ack! So you are indeed correct. I shot it and for whatever reason it didn't make it into the video when I edited it. I'll have a segment up on the Extra's channel tomorrow morning. Not bad on the fan noise, quieter than the Yoga 720 but will be audible under load.

it's ok ... XPS is much better in terms of build quality. Ideapad has some fan noise issues and other performance issues out of the box according to user reviews.
Shashank Agarwal IdeaPad all the way. It is fine in office, and is good in gaming unlike the xps.
