    I saw that your gauges had took some vibraitions, that means maybe your Flywheel have a counterway. I guess that your harmonic balancer must have a counterway in an inverse way. Dude, I'm writing by the words of my father, he doesn´t know english very well but it's for sure that he's a wise man about balancing. Our regards from Mexico, We loved your video, thanks for share it.

    I saw a few things that I would not do, but nothing to get in a twist over. Over all, it looks very good. Just wondering...why would you use a 454 block instead of a Dart 502 block? Your oil pressure seemed to be low at an idle...only 20 pounds or so. My motors will idle at running temperature with a minimum or 60 pounds and usually pushing over 80 pounds over 2000 rpm. Did you check your clearances? You also put the dial indicator on #1 to check TDC (I assume), but you put the timing cover and harmonic balancer on before you checked. How were you going to make any adjustments if needed...but then for a street motor, you dont really need to worry about that stuff. Out of the box for the cam will always be good enough. I didnt see you put any sealer on in the corners for the oil pan...did you have any leaks? I almost always use MLS head gaskets with a heavy spray of copper coat just to make sure that everything seals and sealer around the water ports on the heads and intake...just a little CYA for that. I have had new dart and Edelbrock heads with a new Edelbrock intake leak a little water on each head in the back where the water ports are blocked on the intake. Why it had a small leak...who knows, but I spent several days a few years ago trying to figure out where some water was getting into the oil...and actually, I didnt discover it...my 10 year old grand daughter did and showed it to me. Sure enough, she was right. Put some sealer on and put it back together and no more leaks. What did you put this in and since it has been a while...how is it running today? Again...good video. www.MotorsbyShooter.com

      Hello, Thanks for your comments I am always very thankful for helpful knowledgeable comments. I will try and answer all your questions. I used this block instead of the 502 because I found a good deal on it, It had already been cleaned up and bored out and included the pistons with it. As for the oil pressure in this video it was showing low because it turns out there was a leak on the line to the gauge, once I fixed it it showed 60 lbs at idle. I definitely checked all my clearances and this was just final assembly all my checks can be found on my blog which is linked in the description. Yes I did put sealer on the oil pan. This video was taken awhile ago and unfortunately I'm still waiting for my 67 Chevelle to be done in the bodyshop. but I have this engine mounted on the frame and have it wired to run every so often. It runs great so far on the frame and fires up right away even after sitting for months. This was my first engine build and learned a lot during it. I am currently working on a 5.3 GM LS build to eventually go in my other project, a 57 International A100 pickup. Thanks again for your comments

      MotorsbyShooter thanks. I also forgot to mention. You mention about me checking tdc with the indicator. I had already degreed the cam so I knew it was on spec. I have an adjustable timing indicator on the balancer. So what you were seeing me doing is just adjusting the pointer to be right on TDC

Been to a lot of schools for different types of automotive but my dad taught me early on about correct assembly of an engine right down to plastigauging the main and rod bearings and the very first thing was ALWAYS INSTALL THE CAM BEARINGS AND CAMSHAT FIRST to reduce chance of damage to the shaft and bearings

    did the oil pressure only around 20 psi at idle worry you? thats a brand new build, it should be up around 40, dont ya think?

    • @jr9070
      @jr9070  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      pazazz06 gaming during initial startup yeah the oil pressure was reading about 28-30psi at idle. When revs were higher it climbed up over 40 psi. From what I've read this is acceptable. I also suspect I had a leak on the oil pressure line. Because the next run( not filmed) it was leaking all over. I fixed it and then the pressure was reading up at 30psi at idle and over 55psi when revs higher.

      Matthew Fern that's hard to give a solid number. I did it the expensive way. I started with a block and pieced it together. If you have a complete engine you can save $ by reusing parts if possible.

    • @jr9070
      @jr9070  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No....what's bearing clearances?...j/k yes I did 3 times I think hah. From what I've read 25psi is normal idle. It was up around 40-50psi when revs were higher. It has a stock volume pump

    how hard do you think this was to do this? I have never done something like this but work on cars as my hobby. looking to put a 454 in my blazer and do you think it was cheeper for you to build this from the ground up? Cheers .. awesome vid. you got my sub (:

    • @jr9070
      @jr9070  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some aspects of the build are pretty difficult. I read a lot of books on engine building before I started. I had a basic knowledge of how to use machinist precision tools, but I still took some time to properly learn how to use them again. What my video doesn't show is all the pre-assembly work that I did. Basically a mock up build of the engine while checking clearances. I think if anyone does some research and takes they're time they can do this too.Check out my blog 67chevellebuild.blogspot.com/ I go into a lot more detail then this video shows. let me know if you have any more questions

      and the way I did it was definitely not the cheaper route. If you had a complete engine you could possibly reuse some parts saving you money.

    I want to learn how to do this so bad. Just now high school shops do not teach this stuff anymore (at lease mine). I would to rebuild a 350 from my El Camino, just do not have the money or the knowlegd/workspace to do it in. Just makes me sad and depressed.

    • @jr9070
      @jr9070  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I was lucky in High school our school had an old Viper V10 donated to us and we got to tear it apart and put it back together, I always remembered that.

      High schools mainly teach about electronic components and how to probe individual wires to determine if a sensor is faulty or if the ECM, PCM or TCM is at fault. Anything mechanical, you are told to buy a crate motor or new trans. The cost has really pushed rebuilding modern parts out of the picture

      I believe it was just a cheap RPM gauge I picked up on ebay.

      we are doing engine rebuilds in my automotives class, most people got to do theirs on some old V8's, but I decided to do one on the 2TZ engine in a Toyota Previa.

    Hey I got a 454 out of a motor home and I am about to rebuild it. This will be my first rebuild ever any tips?

    • @jr9070
      @jr9070  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This build was actually my first too. I did a lot of research beforehand, reading books, internet. The best book I found was "How to rebuild the Big Block Chevrolet" here's a link www.amazon.ca/Rebuild-Big-Block-Chevrolet-Tony-Huntimer/dp/1613250525/ref=pd_sim_14_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=610TEFJRT7L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR124%2C160_&refRID=MWBGCCETC23DCGCZ2VQPHaving good precision measuring tools is a good idea too ex. micrometers, dial bore gauge, torque wrench. Take your time, measure twice, even three times if you have to. My video here just shows my final build. I actually had already mock built this engine once before and did all my measuring then before I tore it all back apart and cleaned again before the final build.Also take your parts to a good reputable machine shop for them to do the machine work and check everything over.feel free to ask anymore questions.

    Did you go through the cam's break-in procedure on that wooden stand, or did you skip it because you're using roller lifters?

    • @jr9070
      @jr9070  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chase G. I am using hydraulic roller lifters so cam break in procedure wasn't necessary. But on initial startup I did bring the engine up to approx. 2000 rpm and held there for about 5min. Then I varied rpms for awhile, while never dropping below 2000

      Thanks for the response. It was hard to tell in the clip. I have a 70 Chevy Longhorn with a factory 402 (truck stamped heads), Dana 60 rear end, three gas tanks plus an 8.5' box deck. the 70 was the first year of the 402. I enjoyed your video and appreciate you sharing it :)

    How long did the build take??

    • @jr9070
      @jr9070  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a good question. I was wondering this the other day. I wish I had kept track of my hours I put into it. The final assembly alone I probably have a good solid 8 hours total maybe a bit more. The pre-assembly I would say maybe 16 hours total. But this is also my first build so I took my time and some times triple checked measurements.
